Famously depicted as a dunderhead in Sharpe, not least because he commits his troops to "standing in front of the other guys just shooting" and gets them all killed by cavalry.

>At NO point would two lines of infantry just stand in front of each other shooting
Maybe you MEANT to say, that the objective in this era of warfare was to close in and drive off the enemy with the bayonet?
(Or conversely, to shoot an approaching enemy to ribbons, before they could get close.)

But as written, you're saying that never ever ever did both sides just get within firing range and shoot over and over.
Which is of course just ridiculous.

>But as written, you're saying that never ever ever did both sides just get within firing range and shoot over and over.
>Which is of course just ridiculous.
NAYRT but that would be an oddity. For a start, if in open terrain how would you get a unit to stand through it? One would break before long, which was the whole point. Units needed to move to hold together in combat. Either towards or away, in general.
It's certainly the case in rough terrain (or around fortifications) two sides could end up enmeshed and repelling each other by fire to prevent a close to bayonets. In that case it's less the case that they formed firing lines against each other and more the case that you'd end up with slow wheeling maneuvers to seek flanks and lots of skirmishing. Situations which might be resolved by cavalry or artillery.

Why keep reposting the same images we've already seen rather than new cards?

How do I make a campaign revolving around the gimmick Arios Theoman's sword Escude revolves around work?

To explain
>Arios is the "hero" of the setting
>He has a magical sword that gets more powerful the more humanity dies
>It's a dilemma - he needs the sword to be at least 30 percent powered up to be able to even hurt the demons ravaging his world, but to do that he needs to allow humans to die - or even actively curtail their population himself so as to paradoxically save them

It's a killer concept - but I feel like as a campaign it becomes hard to gamify since the players could literally just do nothing, allow the sword to get powered up, and kill the big bad without any moral dilemma at all

Why didn't they make a magic sword that didn't need people to die and was just at 100% all the time?
>>
>>97284375
I guess you could give each PC a distinct legendary weapon or artifact that gives various buffs depending on the current human population. It could be something as simple as "+X to all stats", as crucial as "ignore X points of any demon's innate supernatural damage resistance", or it could be something unique to every weapon.
You should also have a "human population" statistic that the PCs can check with their weapons at any time. It doesn't have to give an exact number. You can just give a hint like "the weapon feels colder than when you last held it, as if the sollective life force of humanity is dwindling" or an abstract rating like "3 out of 10 jewels on the legendary scepter's head have faded black."
When the PCs complete a quest, you might adjust the human population depending on how well the PCs succeeded in their quest. You might determine this with a random roll, use a character of modifiers depending on how many objectives were accomplished, or just go by vibes.
If a PC dies, you might allow the weapon to be passed along to a new PC, or you might allow the old PC to be revived at great cost to the human population (it might require willing sacrifices, or maybe a fraction of the remaining population just gets magically Thanos-snapped at random). I think allowing PCs to revive at a cost is a neat idea, since it creates dynamic difficulty (if the PCs do well, then more people are saved, but things get harder for them; if the PCs are struggling, then they can just power up at the cost of human lives) and saves the trouble of having to roll up a new character.
If the PCs choose the easy path to power, or too many humans die, then make sure they feel the consequences. Places where the PCs can rest and resupply become sparser, replaced by ghost towns. Human allies and support networks become fewer and more expensive. Demons become more numerous (but not individually more powerful). And so on.
>>

>>
>>97284375
What if instead of requiring a % of population dying the sword is just powered up by human souls consumed? Then your players have to actively decide if it's worth it to personally slay innocents to power the sword enough to fight demons.

The Prince cordially informs you, and all parties otherwise interested in assisting the rightful authorities of the city, or otherwise not interested in getting caught in the crossfire, that the plan outlined by House Venus is broadly accepted. Authority on its execution falls to House Venus. On account of our Sheriff being still missing, and presumed dead and probably eaten by a unicorn, I've been granted the entirely provisional, until a better candidate is found, office of Sheriff as to helm a force sent to aid the operation, with my Coterie declared equally provisional Hounds, as to spread the authority out.
Accounting for reinforcements and volunteers, we'll have:

>Three Ventrue, counting me, an older sister visiting to help and a local
>Four Brujah - Tats, two of her friends, one local
>Two and a half Toreadors, consisting of the younger member of the college circle of Toreadors, as she works under me, one local Toreador who agreed to help, and Romeo

>Hey anons wanna play a roleplaying game?

> Wdym you won't play, are you guys faggots or smth?

Just play monopoly at this point.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

(Continued.)

CoD works in a two axis system, typically your 'race' (vampire bloodline, type of mage, werewolf breed, etc) and your 'guild' (order, association, tribe, school, etc), and each thing gives you access to different powers or abilities or schools
>>
>>97284076
>>97284091

Deviant: The Renegades is a little looser than even that.

The vast, vast bulk of powers are universal, not Clade-specific. Furthermore, the only limitation on cross-Clade powers is that no more than half of your total dots of powers can be cross-Clade.

For example, if you are playing a Cephalist, then you could have half of your total dots come from [Chimeric/Coactive/Invasive/Mutant] powers, but no more than that.

That is it. They do not cost extra or anything. And again, most powers are universal. If that still is not good enough for you, there is the Transitional Form from Shallow Graves, which is specifically set up to enable even more mixing and matching of Clades.
>>
>>97284201

As a caveat, there is a small handful of unique, exclusive powers for each Clade, called "Adaptations." But even this is not a hard rule; Shallow Graves offers ways to pick up Adaptations cross-Clade.

Alternatively, Black Vans' high fantasy genre lets you simply ignore Clades altogether and just pick whatever you want for your character, all very build-a-bear.
>>
Looks cool but having to keep track of everyone's conspiracy and keystones seems pretty cumbersome
>>
>>97286169

The core rulebook specifically suggests having everyone tied to the same starting conspiracy. This is why there is a rule for upgrading a conspiracy based on how many Renegade PCs oppose it. The Devoted Companion suggests much the same for Devoted PC games.

If conspiracies still are not your thing, Black Vans offers options for removing conspiracies in favor of other antagonistic plot devices. The high fantasy, post-apocalypse, and superhero emergence genres are good examples of this.

Touchstones can be a lot to keep track of, true. Shallow Graves and Black Vans both offer advice on this. If this still is not good enough, Black Vans gives options for removing Touchstones in favor of more conventional motivations, like Virtues, Vices, and three Aspirations.

What are some of your experiences with BRP or mythras? Favorite stories, characters, or supplements?

I generally like running pulp or horror campaigns. Funniest story setup was how my players thwarted a small series of adventures I planned before it even started.
>Players role up an old priest, a journalist, and basically fred from scooby doo.
>Investigating a series of murders and disappearances.
>Get captured thesmelves and wind up in a rundown factory converted to sort of look likea victorian mansion.
>Meet an obvious vampire who uses them for basic company and conversation before planning to kill them.
>My players escape, the frail priest manages to full nelson the vampire, and the other players manage to use a stake to kill him.

It ended what I planned to be a multi session adventure in one night. It was a lot of lucky roles and ended up with being funny.
16 replies and 3 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97270691
So how do those cons compare to BRP?
>>
>>97280959
brp is more generic and tries to simulate a lot of different genres of games. Most people dont even use it for fantasy because there is magic world as mentioned before which is a fantasy hack of brp+stormbringer.
This mirrors my own personal experiences as well as i have played different stuff in brp but never a fantasy game with it
>>
>>97280959
>>97281060
The initiative and action economy stuff in mythras is also better. BRP really emphasizes dex as the best stat for almost anyone because of it. Myhtras uses a combo of dex and int to determine action points or you can use the alternative of giving every pc the same amount.

A lot of BRP supplements or spin offs can be hit or miss, especially form chaosium. The base game of magic world, but a lot of supplements are trying to fit stuff from other games int magic world with little alteration to make it work right.

Recent chaosium supplements are notorious for being the writers thinly veiled fetish or political shitflinging.
>>
What would people say are the most necessary or useful supplements to mythras/brp?
I feel like monster island, book of schemes, and the sorandib supplement are pretty useful. The last one is mainly for the alchemy and engineering rules.

Does anyone have any experience with clockwork & cthulhu or clockwork and chivalry?
>>
>>97286462
i really like mongoose empires for handling kingdoms and their conflicts even if it's on the background and the gloranthan book on chaos magic whose exact name i forget rn. Monster island as well as griffin island are awesome

Speed paints are APs take on Citadel Contrast paints. Thin and pull away from peaks while setteling in crevaces. The idea is to get a highlight, base coats, and shadows in one go. The images shown here
>>97284444
>>97284485
>>97284498
Have one coat of speed paints over a mini with a metallic primer on the left and a white primer on the right.

The first run of Speed Paints had reactivation issues resulting in a new formula pretty quickly that solved that problem.

Contrasts and Speed Paints share problems. Neither do well on large flat surfaces, they have a pretty wide range of opacity even in similar shades making mixing them pretty much a no go, and they suck dick on any primer that is darker than light gray.

Where SP is better than Contrast?
>Cheaper
>Dropper bottles (although this is personal)
>Consistent flow properties

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
>>97284541
It's like a super pigmented wash so it colors the whole area but is stronger in the crevices, basically doing two or three steps all in one go. iirc, the first iteration of Speed Paints had a problem with reactivation so they were really one and done, but Citadel Contrast Paint and I'm pretty sure the modern iteration of Speed Paint doesn't have that, so you can combine it with proper highlights or put a second layer of it on after it dries to further enhance the color. The intention is for them to be a whole alternative system to traditional painting, and it is easier to get table ready results since they look half-decent just putting one layer down over white primer.
>>
>>97284677
Yeah, it's about making minis look "good enough" for gaming. You can use them for basing and then highlight, shade, and such with acrylics for more showcase kind of things, but at that point you should really just be using regular paint.

Whether it be SP, Contrast, AK, or any other 'speed paint', if you are doing more than prime, one coat, wash, and seal then you should stick with traditional paints. That said, speed paints are a god send if you got hoards of board game gray minis you want to knock out.

It was obviously comical hyperbole but since it went right over your head and you're being a humourless dick about it.

Guy who learnt his techniques as a kid and has to match hundreds of years old paints, glazes, finishes using materials which he has often has first to source the raw materials for, many of which haven't been made for centuries, before he can try mixing them without knowing the exact proportion of ground, pigments, solvents, binders, other additives, size of pigment particles, how they will be affected by the need to layer, apply a surface treatment, sand down, match texture, artificially age, let alone all the other work he does in reconstruction and repair before he can even apply the colour since all of those will affect the colour matching.

versus

Buy a couple of paints off the shelf.
Use a measuring spoon or pipette.

Your comparison is invalid and unreasonable.

I started working on a Science Fantasy TTRPG. It was originally a GURPS setting, but i wanted something more pulpy, less realistic, and it's spun off into its own thing.

And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

There's no fully faithful retroclone, but OSRIC is the one with the fewest changes and omissions. You should just play AD&D itself, though, not much reason to use a retroclone.

I use OSRIC at my table for players to reference but run things using AD&D for things that it doesn't cover (encounter distances etc.) I think it's a fine product and, let's face it, much easier to parse for the less enlightened of us than the prose of Gygax (pbuh).

OSRIC and hyperborea are the big two that come to mind. OSRIC is more of a reorganizing of the rules. Hyperborea is more of it's own thing but heavily influenced by ad&d.

If you want to mix it up, give Hyperborea a peak. My group is going to be playing it after this AD&D campaign reaches a good stopping point or a TPK. If you're into sword and sorcery and/or weird science fantasy it's absolutely worth checking out.

Question of the Thread:
Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?

I have a soft spot for it. Stuff like MechWarrior and Earthsiege were my first taste of mecha. Even if 'mechs are more mobile than they are depicted in MechWarrior. I still have the itch to put weapon arms on reverse joint, quad, and tank leg ACs sometimes. (I.E. when I'm not getting my ass kicked by other ravens)

half of all mecha content is pve video games, whats your point?
>>
>>97283697
Most of all mecha content is a boy and his robot type anime from the 70's-80's. Videogames would barely cover 10% of it, pve or otherwise, and they mostly stopped making them entirely about 10 years ago.

Which should have really have nothing to do with lancer. Neither of those games are primarily about dismantling yucky chudstates with your epic antifa builds anyway.
