Speaking of vampires. I'm glad I live out in the boonies and only hunt weird ugly stuff, half of which is the equivalent of a very dangerous animal. Because I know I'd fold immediately to a sexy she-vampire.
>>97262697Truly. Sexy vampires are such a danger. I'm not sure how other hunters resist. The one time I came face to face with one, she was working against a mutual enemy so there was no need to kill her. It was like she read my mind with how sensual she was.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97262723More early 20th century so there could be artdecoish but not as specifically aimed there. Operation Whitebox is WWII but might work.
I've always been perma-DM for friends, and haven't DM'd a game in a few years of any sort. If I started to have time again, my friends would jump at the chance to play online (we all live states apart).I've never played OSR games on either side of the table. I've run a lot of WFRP, some GURPS, some PF1e. I've dabbled in the rules of AD&D1e before, but even after skimming Old School Essentials and reading Principia Apocrypha and the other PDF recommended, I'm not sure I *get* OSR, but I'm very interested in running it.More than even running my first game though, I feel like I don't understand it well enough to run. It's so foreign. I haven't read B/X and maybe that plus finishing the OSE rules will be enough, or maybe reading an adventure, but are there any streams of people playing an OSR game that I could follow? If I had a bit more free time, I'd almost be willing to pay to participate in an online one-shot (I've done once before just to 'freshen up' some of my skills and figure some things out when I felt out of my depth with online DMing in general)
>>97266427>even after skimming Old School Essentials and reading Principia Apocrypha and the other PDF recommended, I'm not sure I *get* OSR, but I'm very interested in running it.We have two n00b guides linked in the OP that are much more concrete than those (highly overrated) primers. I recommend reading them and coming back with any questions you might have.
>>97266813Sorry, should've mentioned I've read those too. I feel like after 2-3 sessions, I'd be getting the feel for it, but it feels more alien to me on session 1 than not, and if I were actually gonna run this with some friends, even preparing them for all the 'differences' from what they're used to and getting them on board conceptually, it'd really throw a wrench in if I was actually running it with that bad of a feel. That's why I'm really interested in just seeing some play examples.
>>97266862I've looked. There really isn't anything that shows you the process from behind the screen. Bandit's Keep on YouTube is probably your best shot. However I would advise just writing out in your own way a flowchart or procedure notes after reading the Moldvay Basic rules. Strictly following the procedure should be all you need as an experienced DM to find yourself playing in the OSR style. My own procedure notes in picrel may be of use, at least as an illustrative tool of what I'm talking about. Start the game as close to dungeon crawling as possible when you begin play.

>>97266880Oh, I mean like, very specific things rather than the general ruleset, this tends to be swingy, but is rather alright in my book and the only major issue I had with it was how absolutely game changing armour is, and by extension how overpowered it makes armour ignoring attacks. For example some scenarios just plain don't work very well, like dragon hunt. Some units are blatantly overpowered unless you have specific things countering them (death commando or left hand path hunter for example), while others are ridiculously trash (ecclesiastic prisoners especially come to mind).

>>97266618>balanced it against the new Elemental MonkWhich is also undertuned.
>>97266697I would but the issue there is that's a Level 17 feature on Elemental Monk. It wouldn't be broken to get earlier though, given you get other things too at that level on Elemental Monk. The whole concept of the class is to reinact the teashop scene in CTHD, so its all mobility and beating back large numbers of enemies, with weapons and unarmed together. So I might take your advice, and just consider how to work in Level 17 as a buff to that.
>>97266825>The whole concept of the class is to reinact the teashop scene in CTHDOkay, but most of that scene is people being pushed through railings or out of windows, not just taking force damage from standing near someone. Because as it stands tossing the enemies around would require the Monk to use a Warhammer or Battleaxe in order to push or topple, rather than a sword.Making it so Deflect Attack could push back melee attackers could be a way to do it. Or if you want to lean into the Ashardalon's Stride effect, it could be that the level 6 feature could push enemies as a way to avoid opportunity attacks, and then the higher level feature would add the damage to it.
>>97266916How about this?Level 6: Uncoiling the Hidden Dragon: When you use your Step of the Wind, your Speed increases by 20 feet until the end of the turn. For that duration, any creature of your choice takes damage equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die when you enter a space within 5 feet of it. The damage type is your choice of Force, Slashing, Bludgeoning, or Piercing. A creature can take this damage only once per turn.Level 6: Qi Blade: Whenever the Monk attacks with a Monk Weapon she may choose to have any attack with it deal Force damage instead of its normal type. Level 11: Soaring Phoenix Step: The Monk may move or stand upon the open air, essentially flying. If she ends her Turn and isn't on stable ground, she falls. Her Slow Fall no longer requires a Reaction and completely negates all Falling damage. When the Monk spends a Focus Point to use Step of the Wind, her Speed is doubled for the Turn. This is applied after the +20 from Uncoiling the Hidden Dragon.Level 17: Invincible Sword Princess: The damage of Uncoiling the Hidden Dragon increases by your Dexterity Modifier and any character struck by it must make a Strength Saving Throw. On a failure they are pushed 10 feet in a direction of the Monk's choosing or they are Disarmed. Level 17: Kicking Over Wudan Mountain: Once on each of your turns, you can deal extra damage to a target equal to one roll of your Martial Arts die when you hit it with a Monk Weapon. The extra damage is the same type dealt by that strike. Moreover, you cannot be disarmed nor your Monk Weapons damaged or destroyed while you are wielding them.
>Agonizing Blast: Choose one of your known Warlock cantrips that deals damage. You can add your Charisma modifier to that spell's damage rolls.>True Strike is a Warlock cantrip that deals damage.Should I allow my Warlock player to choose True Strike?Choosing True Strike would mean it double-dips on charisma. But it falls behind Eldritch Blast from level 5 onwards.

>>97266300When and where were the events of the movie stated to happen in a few weeks? Just curiousAlso Anakin being extremely insecure about Padme cheating on him from the offset makes no sense and is clearly something Lucas cut because it made Anakin look irrational from the get-go. In the actual movie, while it was cut for time, the Delegation of 2000 scene shows Palpatine slowly manipulating Anakin into believing someone may be seducing Padme into behaving against Republic interests, and he clearly knew Anakin would eventually implicate Obi-Wan. It's far more logical and it plays into Anakin falling to paranoia once the Dark Side has fully taken over him at Mustafar rather than just randomly when he was still a Jedi.
Lads, tell me. I am looking for a new game.It boils down to these three:Konflikt 47Marvel Crisis ProtocolStar Wars LegionK47 has some appeal in the weird war 2 setting. Seems like the easiest game to get into. But the Bolt Action base feels... super lame? Like a very generic wargame, you know, few special rules, few abilities, everyone is basically the same...MCP might be neat, I like the low model count and special abilities and narrative+game combo, but it feels like a very competitive, tryhard game that will make my brain explode. Also super expensive.SWL seems cool in that it does things differently to other games, but I am sort of worried it is very... "schematic" or "abstracted" for a lack of a better word? Like I am not playing on a proper battlefield, but basically sort of exchanging activations in a vacuum, like playing a card game, not moving soldier dudes to cover etc.Are my assumptions wrong? I am fairly experienced in other small-to-large skirmish level wargames though not the usual 40k "2000 points and 100 dudes" games.
From my point of view Dark Icky would be a cool name
>>97259329So, the "mertalizer". Did they just make that one up for Legion?
>>97266587Yep. Same with the Shore Trooper Mortar. And the upcoming Guerilla Troopers for rebels. Game companies coming up with new things to suit their needs is not a new thing.>>97266466That's kind of a vague critique, anon, but I think I know what you mean. I suggest taking a look at a few battle reports on youtube.>abstracted/schematicNot really, imo. You could say it about the command card effects, but this is the only obvious aspect. In my experience, almost all units just feel right to their portrayal in Star wars, especially the characters. As someone with 100+ Legion games under the belt, the game does feel like a proper war game. It is a game that rewards good movement and positioning, looking at the battlefield holistically, and setting up blocks and traps. The nice thing about Legion is that its listbuilding system discourages extreme skews, making sure that almost all lists look like proper armies. Are there any mechanics in particular that you want to ask about?

>>97261797Doesn't look too bad, pretty nice camo for your first minis. Remember the camera sees a lot more than anyone would in real life.I wouldn't bother with the individual fingers like you did on the 2nd guy, looks kinda weird, just make it all skintone.
