Thread dedicated to Sci-Fi based discussion. 40k need not apply. [\spoiler]How goes your sci-fi setting, anon? I am currently running a Traveller game in a homebrew setting, and am getting lost in the sauce of stellar physics.
>>97352667Here are my rules1. FTL travel is only possible with a real sentient person controlling the ship. Don't try brain in a jar, it backfires.2. FTL communication inside of a solar system is possible, but only through some fairly expensive infrastructure.3. The vast, vast majority of information is carried by courier ships who must make the FTL travel by themselves.4. There is instant FTL galaxy-wide communications available, but only the big giant ancient asshole alien empire knows how to do it, and only those people extremely, extremely high up get to use it. This typically takes the form of pre-recorded video messages. A live holo-link with a member of the Imperial Court means someone on the other side of the call really fucked up. Humans (aka players) have access to this tech, but can only send very simple text messages, like telegrams, can be vulnerable to distortion, it's not reliable.I like the feeling of Traveller "Age of Sail" communication, but I also want to leave myself open to other stuff.

>>97354109I basically want something fast and abstract. Give everyone one or two actions to do something and get back to the game. Delta V can suck my balls.
>>97350282it's growing on itselfnew PCs gets mission to find older PCs missing (duke with important princess NPC) in same sector, still plenty of exploration left; best thing it is probably easier to fit new PCs in setting as it grows, I get that feel anyway>>97351748>Traveller isn't hard sci-fi in the slightest so there's no need to worry about it.has this feel for most players; have yet to try 2300AD
working on a sci-fa system for my friends :) this is the latest draft>https://files.catbox.moe/drgabx.pdfthey've made a robot esper and an arborian smuggler. i'm gonna throw them in to a space station in the neutral zone where they have to try and stop a terrorist threat, and have that lead into a planet-hopping story similar to KOTOR, where every couple of sessions they'll collect a macguffin on one planet and fly to the next. we were supposed to play this weekend, but rescheduled to this week. i wanna test the leveling curve from level 1 to 10, some ground combat, space combat, social stuff, a couple of dungeon crawls, get them aligned with/hunted by different factions, go from zero to hero, maybe experience a death or two.

>>97351627The diplomacy is the interesting part (to me). Livius writes some very entertaining speeches for the various Greek factions as the Romans and Macedonians vie for their support. Then there's the naval battles, naval siege, concerns for winter quarters and all that. The actual battles are very short, the maneuvering and planning is where it's most interesting. Suits itself to a campaign game more than single battles I'll admit.Alexander and the successors have some good battles. A great one is the siege of Tyre where they built a dam to the (then) island fortress, still visible today.>>97351443> Germans defeat the soviets by... surrounding them> Canadians defeat germans by...shooting at them as they walked forward> Hitler was defeated because...their lines were biggerWW2 warfare is just endless hordes of Shootmen smashing into each other. Boring!
>>97353957I took a shitty welding education and got a decent job that pays my bills and allows me to support my mother, can't live fancy but comfortably.
>>97352674What are these radical ‘fixes’ then? I’m genuinely curious. Worst-case scenario you give us all some pointless well-worn platitudes, at best you save some lives from waste.I think referring to depression as ‘mental weakness’ is pretty reductionist too - Lincoln, Churchill, Newton, Grant all suffered from awful depression and achieved great things - and that’s before we even get into all the great contributions to the arts made by people exhibiting this ‘mental weakness’.
>>97353733Lovely stuff.
>>97354566>mental weaknessNTA, but calling it weakness is entirely accurate. A man who can't pick up his infant son is just objectively physically weak (ie. less strong than expected for his species). A man who can't get arsed to get out of bed and provide for himself and his family is mentally weak (ie. less motivated or disciplined than expected for his species). And I'm saying this as someone who still "deals with depression" or whatever we're gonna call being a weak cunt.Acknowledging your weaknesses as weaknesses and flaws is a necessary step in overcoming them. People achieving things despite their weaknesses does not mean that they didn't have those weaknesses or that those things weren't weak, just that they overcame them or compensated.A deaf nigga that paints a nice painting is still deaf (ie. having extremely weak hearing). The cure for weakness is strength.

>>97354229I think that depends very much on the context of both the army and how you're dividing your points. I'm also still a newguy, but I think in the case of cavalry you might want to field it in a single unit? I haven't looked that deep into the rules for cavalry, but I'd imagine for a powerful cavalry charge and staying power you might want to keep them together. A champion, musician and banner could in that case help out, especially if you're going to be using these dudes as your main offensive capability. To give an example of when I decided not to use a command set:With my Empire force I get to work with detachment rules, so I gave my main regiment of buffed up halbs two blocks of 10 missile troops as support. I don't expect them to get into melee (although that might still happen), and as two detachments for a buffed up regiment I opted for maximising firepower over giving those small blocks some very minor bonuses in the grand scheme of things.
>>97354229For me I ask myself "is it important this unit wins its combats, and especially the combats that might be close?"If the answer is yes I build command models.Example: I want my block of 15 gors in combats and I want them winning so I build command for the extra combat resolution.I dont care if my ungors with bows with a melee and dont ever expect them to, so I skip command for them
>>97354229Champion and musician are usually good to have on almost every unit. Champ especially is very valuable because of the challenge mechanic. Banners are not worth putting on units units whose role is to slow down and/or harass the enemy. Your enemy gets 50pts for every banner he/she captures so having a banner on a unit of 5 marauder horsemen almost doubles the point you give when they eventually die.
>>97354229Modelwise yes, because I like the look of it. But in terms of rules I wouldn't take banners for chaff or horsemen. The extra CR isn't going to help them in any meaningful way (unless I'm specifically going for some kind of magic banner) and when they inevitably do get killed they won't give out free points like candy. The musician is good on everyone imo.

Primordialfags and out of pocket posts. Name a more iconic duo. Anyways >>97353961>>97353967>>97353970This is definitely more on the mystical side. How does this explain abyssals and infernals?
>>97353639The Neverborn aren't loyal to the Yozis, that's asinine. They are also not driven by their suffering into a state of extreme compassion for those who aren't suffering like them, or into a desire to prevent others from falling into extreme suffering.Look at literally all of their schemes. Death Lords, Abyssals, Whispers, Nephracks- they "want" to cause death (hopefully it could free them) and suffering (out of spite and mindless anger). They don't give specific order, but if you're an Abyssal who genuinely wants to follow their guidance, and you're throwing spaghetti at the wall, "maybe if the Oblivion toilet is stopped up with these Primordials, we could plunger them down with MORE dead Primordials" isn't an insane thing to try.It probably won't work, but then, probably nothing will alleviate the suffering of the Neverborn and it's not like that drives their servants to sit quietly forever doing nothing. They're always looking for horrific destructive atrocities to commit and killing a Yozi would 100% be on SOMEBODY's list.
Stop looking at fantasy settings and its cultural dialogue through contemporary utilitarian lenses. Your present reasoning and thoughts are a direct result of sociocultural narratives, they're not objectively reasonable or the apex of human thought.

5 person Level 5 party.
>>97353633If you want to make it less deadly have some of the enemies enter a round or two later or the mimic not do anything until it’s “triggered”
>>97354073Or have the encounter begin with the Mimics already in combat with the Undead. If the party start off very well, everyone remaining goes against them instead; if they perform poorly then they have Mimic ally until all the dead are down.
Stuff like this is super dependent on terrain and party makeup, this could potentially be a cakewalk if all the melee-only undead get mulched by something like Spiked Growth and there's just a ghost left to get focus fired with ranged attacks, or it could be instant TPK if they get surrounded indoors and somebody's unluckily paralyzed by a ghoul right off the bat. If the party has full prep time and knowledge of what they're facing and can set the battlefield, even at level 5 this is manageable. If you're just marching into a haunted house or dungeon they're probably losing at least one character.
Why is the ghost a generic combatant? Ghosts used to be something special, you encountered one and maybe it knew it was a ghost, maybe it didn't. We encountered one once that was a looping messenger whom died before he delivered his message centuries ago, and putting him to rest was a fun challenge. Make it something interesting, the ghost of a long dead adventurer seeking his missing party, a noble bound to a family heirloon worn by one of the zombies or dropped in the dungeon at some point, the ghost of a priestess unable to find rest as her corpse lies on cursed ground...Don't make it a combat encounter, use your brain.

I'm just gonna tell you what you *should* do if you *do* decide to try getting into it.>Find someone to teach you how to play the gameAnd I don't mean the basic summoning mechanics because that's just shit you can learn in under an hour. I mean someone that is willing to teach you how to read PSCT (the formatting of the card text, and yes there ARE keywords in this game), how Priority(IMPORTANT) and Timing(Learn Priority first) works, and how some of the more nitty-gritty stuff like the Damage Step works.>Watch real games playing outTHIS IS A BIG ONE THAT NEW PLAYERS DON'T DO. They will try to get into the game by throwing themselves at the damn wolves, while they're still learning, instead of seeing how it actually plays out beforehand. Master Duel (their official digital client) is really good for this since the animations give you time to parse things as they're happening, but YCS tournament feature matches (don't look up YCS Bologna 2025) also work.>Consider GenesysIt's a throttled version of Advanced format where instead of a banlist, certain cards are assigned point values that make it so you can't just shove anything into any deck. It helps wrangle the game a lot, but wrangling it and stupifying it are two very different things. Pendulum and Link Monsters are also absent in the format, but what helps new players more than anything is the point system since it means that you can't shove 5+ engines and generic goodstuff into a single deck like you can with Advanced.
>>97354074Regardless of what you do, absolutely ignore >>97354538 's advice of Genesys. Its a shitty doa format that not even the youtube grifters want to touch.
>>97354074Watch https://youtu.be/IoW1jLrGEnU?si=8fqNGaCmv_8hkDAB if you think you want to get into the game and "remember it as a kid, so it's gotta be the same thing as it was 25+ hears ago". It covers how to play in the later half of the video while the front half is history. But it sounds to me like you found where you want to be with the game which is just to enjoy the art. It's perfectly fine to be a secondary just don't be a knob about it. Don't go "uh summon bunch of monsters is le bad game, low turn le bad" if you don't want to understand the game and constantly make the same bottom of the barrel jokes like "what does pot of greed do?" from reddit and you're better than almost 99% of secondaries. If you want to collect select singles if you're into the art then just ask for advice. As a heads up, this >>97354595 is likely a "Farfa viewer". Which is a demographic of children or people who watch 20 hours of tiktok. Play whatever the hell you want.
>>97354595I said "consider", not "start with". There's a massive difference between the two. If someone's being overwhelmed by Advanced but they still like enough aspects of the game that they want to stick with it, then Genesys is a good alternative.
