Thread #02 Lean Winter on the TundraPrevious Thread: >>97090196Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97224887Rules:>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest.>This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra.>Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory.>Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. The night is dark and full of misinformation.>/un0/ is conceived of as an experimental end to end encrypted program that is very hard to compromise, retains very little data and purges that data regularly. Please play an actual Hunter.>Spoiler any OOC discussion.Happy hunting. Unless this thread somehow takes off like a rocket, this will be the last un0 thread for the foreseeable future. Towards the end of the thread, please give your feedback in regard to these shorter, limited run RP threads.
Important question I've heard tales of a supernatural hunting organization of hedonistic old money that does unspeakable things to what they kill or even worse catchIs it real? Or is it some bullshit on the forums
>>97242538I'm pretty sure one of them is on this very chat.
>>97238127>>97237049>>97233356Thanks for your concern, I'm somehow okay. Lots of shit going on, making my migraine worse. The enfield monster ambushed us when we were leaving the hospital. It was out for Pilgrim personally, I think. Ever since that night when he killed the first one. I was reviewing his trail cam footage. When Pilgrim slipped in the mud, I think he accidentally avoided the monster's attack. It was going to avenge its fallen comrade, but Pilgrim fell and the monster ended up flying over him and hitting that cop. Since then it had probably been hiding, waiting for him to show up again. Maybe followed the cops to the hospital. Pilgrim was scared out of his mind when we were with him, never seen him cry like that, I think partially due to those men who were taking him away, if you can call them that, but also maybe he knew that the beast was coming back for him. He had a window in his room. Shit idk. He didn't make it, I guess is what I wanted to say. And we lost two other men in the hospital. The only one of us who overheard their conversation was killed in the shootout. When we were leaving the hospital, Page exchanged fire with two more men. She says they had a stretcher with a tarp cover. They must've come up from the morgue, where the first enfield was stored. Town's also been cut off by the actual? feds or more of our mystery bad guys? After taking a look at the last thread, it's possible we've stumbled upon a bigger group of hunters with less than noble intentions.I think the situation is out of our scope and control. The rest of the guys think so too. It's time we lay low, reassess... everything. Looking at the silver lining, we've killed two monsters preying on the innocent and unveiled something even worse. That's gotta be worth something. I'm going to post my notes on the monsters for future use, hopefully it doesn't need to be referenced. This is going to be my last couple of post here for a while. Merry Christmas. And godspeed. (1/2)

>>97242769Enfield Monster-reported encounter april 25, 1973 - enfield, illinois-encountered firsthand - dec 2025 - -details from reported case are similar to what was encountered recently-approx 5.5 feet tall-human-like torso, hunched over-large mouth, sharp teeth, bite is capable of breaking firearm and doing heavy damage to steel plate body armor-two large, pink/red, glowing eyes. glow visually oscillates, like cuttlefish? hypnosis when looking directly into eyes, maybe close range? also can possibly inflict a sort of hysteria and amnesia afterwards, similar to werewolves? I was hypnotized during last encounter-- body cam footage shows me sinking to my knees and dropping my rifle. Doesn't immediately wear off after creature is killed. I'm being monitored for long term effects.-3 legs, capable of delivering lethal kick. can also grab and lift full grown woman with leg.-2 short arms, sharp claws-footprints 5+ toes?-can leap vert/horiz 20+ feet. don't know about other movement.-horiz leap capable of knocking over full grown man.-no hair, leathery, gray. blends in well with trees. this with the big eyes might be why it was dismissed for an owl in 1973.Comment too long. What kind of fantasy monsters are you into? I like original abominations, standard humanoids/mythological creatures/giant animals are boring to me.

>>97236425Cool art.Since its berry themed, and is almost certainly intended to kill people by its creators, maybe give it some kind of ranged poison attack. Maybe it fires a pressurized stream of poison at people, like the Horned Toad that shoots blood out of its eyes.

>>97194760One level of Swash, 5 levels of Musket Master. Main stat dex but get 14 Str for power attack and 3 extra dmg when two-handing. Take Weapon Versatility to deal piercing dmg and qualify your Axe Musket for swashbuckler finesse, adding dex to dmg and str to dmg. At lv 5 musket master you add dex to dmg with two-handed firearms and it doesn't specify ranged attacks, so you're adding STR, DEX, and 1.5x PA while attacking with the melee portion of your weapon. If you stay another two levels of gunslinger you can take the Gruesome Parry deed of renown to crit enemies with a readied attack. Or go with Trench Fighter and take static Att/Dmg additions like Weapon Focus/Weapon Specialization (Axe Musket) to add it to both portions of the weapon. Less rules-lawyery.
>>97213287Instead of "Fighter but sci-fi" they made Soldier exclusively AoE weapon based.Operative has a big list of their specialties, but all but two are worthless. They get a huge number of skill feats but barely any skill increases to use them. Despite this Aim is ridiculously strong with action compression and they start with Expert in Martial Guns which gives them a big leg up on every other class in the game.Solarian's abilities amount to being a fighter with an innate weapon but none of the fighter feats, no heavy armor or advanced weapon proficiency, and weapon proficiencies start as trained instead of expert.Envoy lost all the pseudohealing they had in 1e, now every party is required to have a Mystic. Every Envoy ability pretty much requires you to spend two actions to get a meaningful effect. The Ancestries section is twice as long as the Class section because they wanted to make sure every freakshit and sparkledog race from 1e was made core.

How to represent realistic nerve strikes? The existing Pressure Points skill gets some of the effects; you can mess up a limb or stun someone for a few seconds and it usually takes a significant blow (i.e. 1+ HP of injury). 5d seconds is probably too generous. I'm pretty sure that you can't blind someone (optic nerve goes straight to the brain). Solar plexus might make you start suffocating, but is easily resisted with tensed muscles and doesn't last long.I don't think many nerve clusters can be reliably hit with normal levels of skill. Anatomy is messy and nerves are small, buried behind muscle, and prone to slipping around inside people, so there is always a chance of failure. On the other hand, sometimes people hit them accidentally. The most vulnerable one is probably the 'funny bone' behind the elbow, but its effects are minimal.

I received "The Game Master's Guide to Proactive Roleplaying" as a Christmas gift and read it cover to cover. The gist I got was that campaigns should be staged as a series of encounters between the players attempting to achieve their goals and different factions who will either hinder or help them, and that the campaign should grow organically out of these player goals and encounters. I think it had a lot of good ideas and some framework for some of the things I want to do, but I also feel like this applies mostly to homebrew adventures with already heavily invested players who prefer more narrative in their games than straight up dungeon crawling or murderhoboing. Has anyone else.here read it?
>big kerfuffle happened a few sessions ago >now fully expect other party member is just biding their time to kill my ass really hoping the cool down over the holidays calms his ass down.
>>97242633I always view books like that as a style of campaign. In the same way west marshes is a style of game. So is running a pre-existing game, or just prepping one session at a time like with lazy dm’s guide.Sounds like an interesting way to run a game. Often I incorporate elements of different books into how I run games and prep. Like with the lazy DM’s guide I take the idea of ensuring I prepare NPCs just as much as combat encounters sometimes by just copying fictional characters. In many ways I have different factions but could be good to read that book for some ideas on how to run them.
>>97242633>I also feel like this applies mostly to homebrew adventures with already heavily invested players who prefer more narrative in their games than straight up dungeon crawling or murderhoboing.I mean, yeah, why would you ever want to play a pre-written adventure with uninvested players?

How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
>>97216299Reminds me of a setting that had Goblins in the modern daySex with them was banned because they would literally overtake a city in 10 years every time they were allowed to access to lonely men and womenRequiring marriage only made it worse as many would have even more children since they saw it as a way to gain influence through legal ties
>>97242599The magnum opus of wizards is actually searching for a way to mass sterilize goblins
Make them pests of the "goes through your garbage and shits everywhere" variety like raccoons and pigeons. Urban varieties are tolerated by the burghers/tradesmen because they keep the streets clean and make good handymen/bodyguards/retard wranglers for their apprentices. Rural varieties might form similar symbiotic relationships with farmers by taking over animal husbandry. Maybe the more violent "commen enemy" races like orcs or hobgoblins have innate cultural/religious bonds with them which make them good middlemen for trade/diplomacy (and similarly good scapegoats for if/when trade/diplomacy goes south). Maybe they lack a culture of their own and readily assimilate into whatever parent society they find themselves in, swelling the influence of whichever political/religious power bloc manages to sink their claws into them first. Maybe the local culture considers them cute and keeps around as an analogue to farm cats or stray dogs that people in the neighborhood care for because they do a good job of hunting other disease-carrying pests. Maybe they're just gypsies and have a sixth sense for when to move somewhere else before the locals figure out that you're the ones who had sex with all their goats and have sicced the militia on your trail.
You know, we're kinda treating super-reproduction rates as an end-it-all pro. But it doesn't need to be effective anytime and anywhere.Maybe in the wilds predators can kill them off easily: their parasitism kicks off in anthropized (dwarvized, whatever) areas when the conditions of living aren't so harsh.
"Goblins" is a name given to them by Humans since they have no official racial name they identify as being an entirely created race of beings with the ability to adapt to their environments within a few breeding cycles as their lifespans would generally be 20 years assuming they didn't die from overwork, exposure, or violence.Even when initially taken in by Humans as slaves, they were treated infinitely better which not only raised their lifespans but also their general intelligence. In some Human communities such as the Universal Solidarity, they are recognized as Humans and given full rights and privileges regardless of the fact that they are genetically incompatible with Humans and can never interbreed.

TTRPGs are a social game first and foremost. That means there's unspoken rules that vary from group-to-group, but a common one is "acceptable breaks from sensibility" in the name of game experience or table cohesion. It's the kind of thing that keeps the bitter rivalry between the Elf and the Dwarf largely to amusing banter and not outright PvP. It's an innate instinct: nobody likes to spoil the atmosphere, because that's a large part of the appeal of a good game (alongside the freedom). That being said, there are also times when the group's course of action is patently retarded and you can't meaningfully push back on it without feeling like you'd cause a big fight over nothing (and then feel obligated to keep comrades away from the consequences), or something a character cannot abide has to be "sanded over" somewhat, or you as the GM don't want to cultivate the feeling that you're antagonizing your players by hitting them over the head with "you murdered someone because it was convenient and didn't even take measures to cover your tracks" or whatever unhinged misadventure occurred because something about the player position of the table cause human beings to lose IQ. Have you ever had that feeling? I think I see enough greentexts to think it's common.

Is it finally over for scalpers?
I work at a Walmart in the midwest, and there are only automated limits put in place, per transaction. Usually 4 per same item. However, there is nothing stopping a cashier from just doing multiple transactions of the same cards. Might flag something in the system eventually, but I have yet to see it.My manager doesn't really care about scalpers and re-salers, so there's always this group of arabs that come in and buy the whole set of laptops that just went on clearance, just so they can sell them online for 2x/3x the clearance price. Wish we could tell them to kick rocks, but Walmart only cares about "number go up!" and other self-destructive behavior.
They'll just scalp something else. I saw a guy buy over 200 pounds of ground beef at a supermarket and excitedly tell me about how he was going to flip it on a local buying/selling app. I wonder if he still has a freezer full of it.

Doesn't help that the Walmart I work at is within the accessible "let's flee from Chicago and make ourselves a problem there instead" distance. Thankfully I live in Indiana, so we actually have more gun rights than Texas does. Plan on moving to the southern part of the state; the north has been overrun with illegals and criminals from Chicago and liberal potheads from Michigan. Columbus, IN seems nice.

On the spectrum of rubber forehead aliens to complete starfish aliens that are made out of silica and breathe methane, where are YOU specificially comfortable with. Does there come a point where an alien becomes too weird for you to "relate" to in order to include them in your games as playable races?Personally I am fond of aliens that look plausibly like they could have evolved in a different world and have no distinguishable lineage to earth life, even if they share some superficial features.
>>97242244That seems really reductive.
>>97242177Well, sure, via sufficiently advanced genetic engineering modifying humans into all kinds of exotic "aliens" would be pretty trivial but would they really be aliens at that point? You could of course do the whole ancient precursors or even past human empire that has collapsed etc type of justification being the reason why galaxy is filled with what are essentially modified humans, but that begs the question of "are these even aliens?" again.
>>97242473Think of it this way: if you need a GSB, almost surely you could justify it via genetic engeneering (even with advanced furfaggotry and such) plus ancient aliens doing their usual bullshit as needed. Maybe some wetware implants.I mean, it's cheap, but so are GSBs. If you want something more or less interesting, I suppose you could go full autistic and ask yourself why there is a whole ethnicity (if that's the right word) of humans with funny noses or whatever.

>>97242244While true, they also do it because it's a cheap way of conveying an idea or a specific kind of character trait to communicate the idea of the story.Star Trek is specifically guilty of this although it can be said that at least the Ferengi got a massive glow up from being slinking monkey dudes with bulbous foreheads and dragon dildo laser whips to a respectable race who represent old world capitalism in a post scarcity "we don't use money" world.
