Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Do you want to discus actual game things or just whinge about the possibility of being able to hypothetically discuss a game thing maybe?
Because if you want actual discussion there's this thread and /todd2.0/ but none of that ever comes up in either.

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

Well, there are photographs from the early 20th century. It is a pretty disturbing phenomena. Without a working knowledge of written Hindi/Gujurati/any of the dialects of India for primary sources, getting a grasp on it can really on be done by the observations of British personnel. They characterize it as sort of a suicidal disregard for safety amongst the population, as a demonstration of bravery. If we didn't already get a Neo-Mughal book pounded out in short order, it would've been interesting to see something like this. You could compare it to the phenomenon of تَجَاهُل (tajāhul) (disregard) in the Arab world. Men will deliberately place themselves in positions that men from other cultures would regard as insanely perilous. Saddam's T-72's attacking coalition forces at the battle 73 Easting with their commander leading a flying column into the teeth of wire-guided anti-tank missiles and a group of Abrams comes to mind. Unlike in western cultures where similar acts are motivated by the potential for remaining safe, or to provide a solution to the dangerous problem, these sorts of things were done for personal glory-seeking. Might there be a Lemurian phenomena that's similar? Would be worth exploring in further writing.

>Might there be a Lemurian phenomena that's similar? Would be worth exploring in further writing.
Unless you were referencing the Juggernaut directly, its already in the game. The view I had of Lemuria initially was pretty anthetical to this kind of thing, however, I don't think it would be something widely used, or culturally encouraged, since the Cultivation mindset in the warrior caste requires you to pity that the weak cannot be strong opponents to you (which is completely different from taking pity *on* the weak, mind you) rather than outright hate them.
Degens would be free game, however, its obviously their fate not to amount to anything anyways.

You are missing nids and Deldar, the nid one made the carnifex useles and splited his role in 2 or 3 other monsters, characters were cool but the cool upgrades were gone. It was the trigon era. Nids doubled their unit profiles and it wasn't great for the game, also underpowered compared to the rest of 5th..
The other codex books in that style from 4th are Dark angels (sucks, overnerfed marines, terminators are useless, no lass plas, drop pod nerf was ok) eldars (most powerful of 4th, harlequins should be removed of the game), orks (strong, less flavor) Demons, caos marines.

>>97326780
Not sure 100% our d eldar player said that it was too strong but I have not played against it or read the dex, I can tell you that the 3,5 Deldar dex is way more decent than people thinks, you can do crazy stuff with that book. Also for variety after many many many games I sometimes include one or two profiles from 5th nids to spice things up maybe you can do the same with Deldar, or adjust the profiles. Believe me, don't bother with 5th, 4th is just better.

Also imperial armour lists and campaigns are super cool, 40k at its best. The taros campaign is extremely thematic I enjoyed it a lot.
>>
>>97325216
Arguably the 4th ed nid codex is the best nid codex, same for marines, same for tau + imperial armour 3 taros.
3.5 guard was the most thematic too with regimental rules.
3.5 orks were the most thematic they will ever be, but a bit underpowered.
3.5 necrons didn't had all the egyptian crap just yet, but they needed a couple more troop profiles for variety.
Imperial armours updated lost and damned list was also great.
>>
>>97317329
GW needs to release a 40k classic. Base it on 3rd to 4th edition rules tweaked SLIGHTLY. I know HH exists but I don't care about marines vs marines. I want a proper return to 4th edition soul. Let the zoomers enjoy the slop of 10th edition while we play in the paradise of 4th.
>>
>>97327574
Or you could just play 4th.

No, not really. I rarely use character art at all, and i can just draw it if i have to. Besides, gming is a form of creative self expression. Using AI as part of that is like putting tomato sauce on a steak, its antithetical

I've been running games for a decade and a half, and I can't relate to what you've said in the slightest. I frankly don't understand some people's obsession with having art for NPCs--do you print it out and pass it around at the table? Seems like an unnecessary amount of paper when you can just describe the character properly in the first place.

The problem is they price this shit like collectors kits for gundam or whatever where people are paying prices of good looking one off dispaly models they're not expected to have more than one of. But the way they write the rules they want you paying fucking $15 a 4cm model that you need 40 of. They used to make and price this shit with the expectation that a teenager could reasonably get into warhammer. Now only rich kids and adults with more money than sense can afford it.

I have some questions and a premise for a thread.

> 1. What is the best system to run a one-shot campaign emulating the story of No Country For Old Men in a way that captures the "FUN" of the movie?

>2. If you could make a system for this one-shot to be played from, what would you put into that is notable?

>3. What other scenarios would be interesting to play in this style?

Having divergences in the story would obviously be critical, like if Moss had actually killed Anton, for it to be fun, but other than just plain ole' rolling dice how would a game where an individual plays as Anton Chigurh, another plays as Lewellyn Moss, another plays as Carson/The Sheriff, etc etc work?

I ultimately settled on a triumvirate build with Alexandria, Legend and Eidolon along with the perks Blank, Invictus and shattered limiter. My guy is now entering his 2nd jump which is Dragon age, what should he aim for and how much trouble can he expect in any of his endeavors?

If your party gets a scroll of a Silence spell in the beginning of the adventure, and later, among other enemies and traps, spellcasters who have to say their spells out loud, sirens, and finally banshees, would you consider that clever, or at least good encounter design?

At the same time, if that cucks the bard and the spellcasters in your party who also rely on sound / spells w verbal components? Would you be ok if they actually use it in a sneak segment?

I think it's worth discussing how to give players alternative solutions to problems but honestly? I think they'd be too stupid to realize, but on the slight chance they come up with it on their own I think it's better never to hold their hand.

Anyways, post stories with this kind of neat interactions if you have some.

I've been playing games for almost two decades now and people who pump Charisma are consistently the most useless faggots in every party. And this remained true even during the very few times I have attempted it myself.

I have no choice but to arrive at the conclusion that Charisma and every one of its iterations across every fucking game ever is just genuinely useless placebo dog shit. And when pressed to justify their investment charismafaggots always ramble about how good it is in real life as if that has any fucking bearing at all on TTRPGs.

Besides, it's not that good in real life either. Actors and performers were considered on the same level as prostitutes in status for most of history.

Tying roleplaying to a single stat is dumb, speaking smart like when convincing someone should be an Intelligence roll, while speaking in a way to manipulate someone by inferring their intellectual weaknesses should be Wisdom.
It would be pretty easy to remove the stat altogether. Bard becomes a Dex caster, Paladin and Sorcerer become Con casters, and Warlock becomes an Intelligence caster.
>>
>>97308068
In every game outside of d20 derivatives, my charisma characters have consistently made the party a good chunk, I'd say 20%, more than they otherwise would have. Not entirely through negotiation either- A well timed scam here, a demand for payment to avoid legal troubles there, and you can make quite a bit.

Oftentimes my character was the entire reason we even got paid at all for our efforts when things went badly.

I think what people took from it's success wasn't the game mechanisms but more the production: minis, art, theme, etc..

There are a bunch of war-euro gamesout there like some other anons mentioned but It's hard to find the ballace between the two to have success. Too much combat and you loose the euro crowd, too heavy and you loose the masses. Also there are other games that do the whole euro but has some combat.
Scythe had some good ideas but it's less than the sum of its parts imo.
