I'm getting surprisingly anxious. Saturday will be my group's first mech combat in almost 2 months. We lost one of the original players, took some time to talk through campaign issues, retconned out the prior two sessions, integrated a new player, and have been running through an "escape from captivity" arc. Now the PCs are finally on track to recover their mechs and try to blast off in a stolen shuttle.

The hard part for me will be balancing the fight. The original PCs got their rides shot to pieces, but the newcomer's mech was captured intact, and will be able to perform field repairs on the other two to make them combat-capable... barely. So it will effectively be two glass cannons and one support unit. I'm thinking that some of their friendly NPCs (including the former PC) can handle stealing the shuttle, and perhaps their Mysterious Benefactor has arranged for additional repairs to be performed to their machines, granting slightly better survivability. That way I can give the team a proper fight, instead of it being a stomp in one direction or another.

Cool, I'm glad things are actively being worked on. That being said, having so many factions almost seems a bit worrying when a lot of the existing ones seem a little barebones, and I wonder if such a small company isn't stretching itself quite thin. In the last few years I feel like Mantic really hurt itself by unveiling new games and factions all the time while leaving their core products without updates or refreshes for years on end. Could say the same thing for Corvus Belli with their endless Kickstarters as well but it seems like they've refocused themselves now.

I do think there's a lot of potential in HGB that could be tapped with some marketing, documentation and quality eye-catching sculpts. Hopefully the game brings some more eyes.

I disagree, there's quite a few little technical points that all contribute to the overall feel of the board. On the larger side of this is the rules against raiding and griefing/spaming which while causes staff headaches definitely led to a sense of cohension and norms for the board itself. Even going to the /tg/ of today, things like how long a thread can stay in the catalog and the accepted prevalence / propriety of generals (and the extent to which the Jannies hide moderation decisions behind 'off topic / take it to general) all go a long way to determining how the board acts. You can see a direct drop in PPH for some of these changes others are more of a group effect.

Why does 4/tg/ suck now? It's run by FBIpedoNiggerfaggots using DiscordTrannieWannaJannies to try to contain culture.

And the really glorious thing is? They may have killed /tg/. But like the other boards, it is simply slowly becoming mainstream. Hi, no, not Dungeon Keeper+. Of course SG ia one of the inspirations, but probably not main (e.g. Crusader Kings was more important). Its focus is not on on building and defending your lair (however there are elements of it), but influencing outside world, establishing cults and spy network, corrupting and cursing nations, leaders and other characters to change them into desired direction, institage wars or waging them yourself when the enemy is weakened etc. Why /tg/? How many hours would it take to build a setup similar to OPs pic though? You'd have to be pretty dedicated and really take an enjoyment in creating scenery. Its modular but you'd still constantly have to build additions to it if you actually run full on TTRPG campaigns with this level of dungeon building.

My only real experience with this kind of stuff is spending a few afternoons making really terrible looking ruins out of cardboard so we could play war hammer.

DF is usually sold painted so there is no time needed for that

Archon Studio also started selling pre painted terrain, but I never used it

There are loads of methods for buying making your own setups now depending on price point and playability. It's not at all like it was 20 years ago where Dwarven Forge was the only option. You might be really surprised what you can do with just cardboard, hot glue, and craft paint. Add in 3d printing, plaster casting, etc, you can build a whole setup for a lot less effort and money than you might think. There is a company that has been around since forever selling plaster molds online intended for tabletop use and teenage me two decades ago thought their products were the coolest shit. As an adult with a career and disposable income I've been tempted on many occasions to buy a set of molds but I don't actually have the space or time for it.

I can tell you from experience though that while full height walls (like the dwarven forge stuff has) look really cool, they aren't very playable and take a long time to set up. Floor-only tiles, or free floating walls, are a lot more practical and faster to set up. Simply lay down floor sections and whatever dressing as you go, or loose walls (with no flooring) for a free-form layout.

If you want some random recs, then Daniel King (for high level game review), Andras Toth (for bombastic coaching kind of advice but less conceited), Daniel Naroditsky (RIP) for educational stomping on lower rated players but in a nice way, and the Aman Hambleton half of Chessbrah for same at a much lower level (Building Habits series especially if you're new.)


Chess Dojo is good for like "chess talk radio" stuff as long as they aren't interviewing people (I think they suck as interviewers, but if it's just the three of them chatting it's fun to listen to) and the absolute best if you want computer-free real time slow analysis of stuff like the candidates tournament, especially as a lot of the "official" coverages has gotten worse, these guy have become my favorite thing to watch to understand wtf just happened in the big tournaments when they actually cover them (just Candidates and World Championship usually).

Those are some personal favorites, but there are a lot of people out there, and I'd put GothamChess as like my 3rd? least favorite. Maybe not that bad, because like I said there's a lot, but I don't remember all the crap.

Also, be aware that Pegasus Chess is a cheater/scam artist who is just making stuff up for clickbait and doesn't actually know what he's talking about, so stay away from those.

I think Danya's videos/streams are exactly what I'm looking for, but he's no longer with us sadly. I'm a newer player, hovering around 500, so that kind of "this is what beginners usually play, this is what you should be playing, this is how you punish these mistakes" are very valuable to me. But for the future I think I'll check out Andras Toth and Chess Dojo.
