How do you justify a "pest race" like goblins or rat people in your setting? Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
>>97213989It's like trying to eradicate rats if rats were 2ft tall and smart as a retarded human. The civilized races try but the vermin are hard to pin down and reproduce like mad. Take goblins for an example. If a male and a female goblin escape, within ten years there are five more goblins, and twenty years later, they've gone from two to twenty five goblins and are harassing villages again. If they aren't cracked down on, distracting from other, more urgent threats, in thirty years they'll be a dug-in goblin warren, in forty a goblin warband, and in fifty a roving horde of goblins to restart the cycle. In that same timespan two humans can raise ten more humans, and two elves are halfway through their elf-child's education. The flipside of this is that the trade-off for their fecundity is that goblins are weak, stupid, (if sadistically clever) and too short-lived to amass real professional skill. Any human army will cut down goblins many times their number by the score and do, constantly, to stop the emergence of another goblin tide reaching critical mass. This is not helped by many dark realms subjugating goblins to use them as cannon fodder and a cheap labour source. There is only so much that one shieldwall of twenty spearmen can do against one-hundred goblins led by a necromancer reanimating the dead as they fall. This is where heroes come in, and so on it goes. Many argue goblins are the grease that keeps the gears of evil grinding, and few can argue that they're wrong.
>>97213989There are efforts to eradicate them, it's just not quite working. There are many reasons why: Goblins are easy to kill but it's almost impossible to get all of them. And it's difficult to organise a force to actually go hunt them, par the course of a decentralised power structure. And the places bothered by goblins tend to be relatively poor rural areas in the first place, so nobody who isn't directly involved cares. The most effective goblin huntings tend to be privately motivated and funded.
>>97214573That poster is obviously a Shitstainian.Everyone knows Bumfuckland is too poor to afford internet.
>>97213989Because annoying pests like rats are for some reason impossible to get rid off, while all the species we like eat shit. Basically the more fugly and annoying an animal is, the more survivable.
>>97213989>Why wouldn't the dominant species make a concentrated effort to eradicate them if they were a problem?
I've been on a space kick recently and want to run a sci-fi space campaign as the GM. What are the best systems for a flexible gaming experience without the autistic complexity of something like Shadowrun? I'm looking for a system that can run "magic" (Psionics, occultists, dark gods, etc) and high-tech weaponry and ships and stuff as well as madness mechanics mutations, cybernetics, horror elements, etc. Visiting weird planets, dealing with intergalactic politics, smuggling goods, assassinations, dealing with alien cultures, learning dangerous magic and technology, etc. I also want the players help make the setting so I'd prefer a flexible system that can handle a multitude of scenarios with cool aliens and stuff. I've heard of Traveler, Starfinder, etc, I just wanna know what system(s) I should focus on learning about first. I'd rather not run it in a Star Wars DnD conversion or Feelings and Lasers. This crowd usually plays DnD or very simple games but are open to other games too. Again I've tried Shadowrun and I'd rather a system that isn't over-complicated and just has the hacking take up 90% of the screentime.
>>97198206Very nice OPYou fished me right inI haven't played anything in a long time but can try to track something down for you I remember seeing a few things that could vaguely fit your description
>>97212786Wow okay I found one pretty quick actually ever heard of Stars Without Number?
>>97212838Oops didn't control fDerp, that has indeed already been mentionedUh Savage Worlds maybe could perhaps fit looks solidGonna go wake up a bit then gather art need more Dai, I'll be lurking
This isn't exactly what OP is asking for but base Classic Traveller is super simple mechanically and will handle any scifi level from "present day, present time" up to the level of a few dozen habitable systems spread over a few hundred parsecs.
>>97198206I have a game I'm almost finished with, but its vibes are less grimdark sci-fi, and more Guardians of the Galaxy, or Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>97213058>I really like the consequences ACKS assigns to failing to pay, even though it apparently goes kinda hog wild with the expenditures.Agreed, it doesn't demand you pay it. It's just you'll be less respected and reputable if you don't.And you know the interesting thing? I can easily see players actually leveraging it to their benefits if they thought about it.Imagine pulling the classic Robin Hood 'Turn up at an archery competition wearing nothing but burlap only to dominate the shit out of everyone for the prize' just through your own cunning rather than DM fiat.
>>97214732haven't really played 5e for years, I play savge worlds with my main group. >Surprise segments with a duration that is affected by dexterity and armour/encumbrance, action declarations, charging, spell interruptions, initiative after the charge being dictated by weapon length rather than initiative roll, morale checks, fighters with multiple attacks per round (from the 7th level onward) always attacking before initiative is even rolled, grappling and overbearing, and so on?guess not, I'll check with my the AD&D GM about that but I don't think many of these are in BX correct? aside from moral and surprise anyway I ask because while I like the ideas presented by the OSR about exploration, resource management and player skill & freedom. How do we fix Steampunk?
>>97196423>How do we fix Steampunk?Play it straight. The genre's pool of published works is about 85% "subversions" with "plucky foid/groid protagonists fighting against The Oppressive System" which is why it dissolved into Tumblr Soup so quickly. You actually need at least one of the major colonial powers to be the unironic good guys totally justified in bringing Progress and Science and Basic Hygiene to the fuzzy-wuzzies. In an American setting this is incredibly easy to do by keeping the injuns the howling savages they were IRL and adding some neat alt-tech. In a British setting this is also incredibly easy to do by channeling your modern 21st century rage at the Pajeet Menace back at their ancestors and have Queen Victoria chastising her administrators for not suppressing them more effectively, or by looking at the fall of Rhodesia and South Africa to understand what those colonists were up against.

>>97206086Ah but you can't do that either, because unless you turned them into societies of super-geniuses living in steampunk Wakandas and all the white cultures were backwards shitholes(afterall, without all the wealth and knowledge and people and heckin genius we STOLE from the poor wholesome chungus natives, we'd be NOTHING) the same people who'd shit on you for depicting colonialism would also throw a hissy about you depicting primitive people as, well, primitive. And even if you did the Native Wakanda vs Dimwit Luddite YTs, you better have at least 70% nignogs(and a token Amerindian) on your company's staff because otherwise you'll be "appropriating the culture of the oppressed" or whatever. My point is there's no way to win, not until we go back to simply rejecting the premise that depiction and endorsement are synonymous, and also the premise that people of one culture aren't "allowed" to depict, draw from, or make comment upon another.
We had a perfect Steampunk universe once, with slight elements of Aetherpunk and "Tech vs. Wilds" concepts, but PP ruined it.
