Question of the Thread:
Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?

>Why is mech ammo subsonic by default?
Post War regulations which were defined by a crisis management organization. They fight monsters and non-heavily armoured enemies, so it's not that big of a deal. They're also not military. The military has real bullets but they don't really do anything so the game isn't about them. Subsonic ammo is quieter and penetrates less armor - it lets mech pilots fight to defend civilians without giving them all hearing loss but also it makes them difficult to fight a military tank or helicopter.

>How does he keep his mech's footfalls quiet?
the token image cut it off but I believe pic related is self explanatory.
also the mechs have a bit of bullshit which leads to their mass being reduced by half (most of time, sometimes it reduces less). And Parts meant for stealth will usually have good dampening. Mechs aren't really loud and don't have loud engines/reactors, they run on normal batteries, so the only noise they make would be stepping on loud floors, fighting and using boosters/thrusters

>Should mecha have hands? Should the hands be humanlike? If they shouldn't have hands, what should they have? If no hands, why even have arms?
We have thousands of years of human weapons with hundreds of cool fighting styles associated with them, including firearms. Humans know how those weapons work and can train with them and understand their effectiveness with their own hands.

If you're making a humanoid robot and you're already ignoring the parts of physics that make them impossible, why not go just a little tiny bit further and make them agile and maneuverable enough to use human weapons in cool ways that improved by their tech? Like what are you doing that would make it different than a tank or a helicopter beyond the fact its a huge walking target? If all you're making is a box with legs then yeah man I'm sorry but the tankfags got a good argument on why it's fucking useless
>>
>>97326045
Your mention of subsonic ammo reminds me of something that I want to implement in a future campaign. Specialized ammunition and weapon mods for use inside space stations and other sensitive areas. Stuff that reduces the severity or likelihood of collateral damage at the cost of weapon performance.

I was rewatching some Gundam series recently, and reminded about how inconsistent they are, series to series, regarding the use of weapons inside the space colonies. Meanwhile, in my various RPG campaigns, the players go to great lengths to limit risks to civilians.
>>
>>97326792
Yeah the players in my games are civilians from very common backgrounds and all of them are generally good or well meaning folk so they have no reason to not abide by the regulations as their weapons are still powerful enough to fight monsters toe-to-toe. And most of them avoid fighting near civilians if needed
>>

I've heard rumours about a new edition of Heavy Gear Blitz coming, does anyone in /mechm/ know anything about it?

File: silence.png (130 KB, 2000x1000)
130 KB
130 KB PNG
If your party gets a scroll of a Silence spell in the beginning of the adventure, and later, among other enemies and traps, spellcasters who have to say their spells out loud, sirens, and finally banshees, would you consider that clever, or at least good encounter design?

At the same time, if that cucks the bard and the spellcasters in your party who also rely on sound / spells w verbal components? Would you be ok if they actually use it in a sneak segment?

I think it's worth discussing how to give players alternative solutions to problems but honestly? I think they'd be too stupid to realize, but on the slight chance they come up with it on their own I think it's better never to hold their hand.

Anyways, post stories with this kind of neat interactions if you have some.
>>
>>97327698
That's definitely decent encounter design, to have a moment where clear recollection of the sum of the party's capabilities is rewarded.

As far as alternative solutions go, I have come to the belief that players should be able to run plans by you, with some kind of mental roll (Int or Wis for d20 stuff, I guess) with how well they roll determining if their character can think of flaws or issues with their plan. They can, of course, choose to ignore the results of this roll and act on whatever plan they want, but the roll should help them, if good.
>>
>Here's mcguffin you'll need to use later, as I've planned.
that's not clever, that's railroading
>>
>>97327698
Leaving solutions for players is good game design, yeah.
I tend to make games that are more open and complex than the standard dungeon crawl myself, so I can't say I actually DO it myself, but it's good where appropriate.

Give shadowrun players a macguffin that will solve their problem and they will calculate that a car is cheaper than the macguffin and hit the problem with a truck instead.
Then get paid twice on selling the macguffin instead of using it. And then either invest 100% of funds into mechanical upgrades and live in a dumpster, or invest 100% of the money on useless tat and live in a dumpster.

How do you feel about players planning their approach towards a dungeon (when the game difficulty is adjusted by the dm anyway (so it doesn't fucking matter)). That's not the same problem, but it is related.

Not in a game but been writing a Monk. Her name is Nian Huachun, she's a member of the Wan Zu, a group of Chinese alchemists and scholars who act as devil-slayers and exorcists for the Emperor. Their shtick is they recruit people to join their order then turn them into chi-sucking dhampir who live as long as elves and act as 'living ancestors' socially. In return for undying service to the Emperor they're given legal and moral access to the chi they need to sustain their long lives. Nian herself is the daughter of a great Chinese general who, when she was dying of a deadly ailment, broke into the palace and begged/forced the Emperor to somehow save her. His solution was turning her into a Wan Zu. Everything was great when it happened and she was 17 but now she just turned 100 and most of the people she knows are dead and she's having an existential crisis over the prospect of another six and a half centuries, so she's thrown herself into her work, spends all her money on wine and frivolous distractions, and is searching for the enlightenment her serene bastard elders assure her is out there that will make the ages bearable. Also she's a fish out of water story, I hope to use her in a normal D&D setting but say she got into a series of shipwrecks and other troubles over the last few months that saw her end up far far from home.
>>
>>97327616
NTA, but while brainstorming a general approach or plan is fine, it does risk bogging things down and wasting time if the players try to go full spec-ops tactics. It's unlikely the party is going to be able to clear out a dungeon in a series of one-sided ambushes, and so time spent on elaborate plans attempting to achieve that is just wasteful.
But simple plans, like waiting for a dragon to be out hunting before heading into its lair, or luring out some orcs from their camp to divide their forces, stem from interacting with the game world, and the DM having the world react in turn.

In both cases, the issue is when the players go overboard. Trying to make a perfect character or a perfect plan just isn't worth it.

I've spent the last year, studying, and designing a custom Arthurian set, originally intended to be based on Le Morte d'Arthur (like how P3k was based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms).

However, as I continued to study, and look into different (and some obscure sources) this turned into a much more wider net.

This set, which is no where near finished includes
>Welsh Triads and The Magnibong
>Pre-Vulgate Arthur traditions
>Vulgate/Post Vulgate/Lancelot cycles
>some English/Welsh fairy tales
>and even a bit of the Victorian Arthurian revival (especially for art).

I avoided the Italian and German romances entirely, and tried not to include weird outliners except when needed. Outside of art, nothing is sourced from the 20th century or onward. Also all art is public domain.

I'm mainly posting here for feedback. Some will be art recommendations, flavor text (especially sourced) will be always welcomed.

I think the next revival movement in a sinilar vein to the OSR is going to be 3rd edition focussed. I think that granular, complex build focussed market isnt really served by 5e or pathfinder truly, and theres empty space in the market/community.

I know. Player options sell. People like PC customization with some stamp of greater quality control than the usual homebrew garbage. AD&D leaned into them towards the end of its run.

However, a lot like OSR, modules solve one of the most time consuming parts of GMing, and can highlight why your system of choice is awesome. A good adventure can also be sold to people who don't play your system, because it can still be cool and save them prep time. Since PF2 put the nail in thr 3.x coffin, you need to give people some sort of killer app or reason to play this clunk out of print game again over PF2 which is actively supported and 5e which offers on the surface a similar experience with a gentler learning curve for both players and GMs. I do love 3.5, but a lot of the time I find myself reaching for Worlds Without Number to "play D&D", because it's written in a way that makes it easy to run and easy to onboard players.

The Game is broken up into 3 phases:

2. After successfully tracking your quarry you will begin the Showdown Phase, where you must fell these horrific creatures in order to acquire precious resources.
3. After the battle, your survivors wander home with loot in hand to begin the Settlement Phase. Arm yourself by developing new weapons and bizarre structures to prepare for next year's hunt.

I bought it for black friday along with gce and some expansions.
My goal is to finish painting the core game (minus the armor sets because I'm magnetizing those) before the end of the year.

Hey there

I've decided to start a West Marches-style campaign on my LGS. It sounds the perfect style to run for a public setting w/ rotating players, but I myself have never DMed one

Any experiences, tips and advices regarding DM-ing/playing West Marches style games?

Or general tips for running games on LGS ?

For those unfamiliar with West Marches style, here is what google have to say about it:
>Player-Driven Exploration: Players decide where to go and what to explore, venturing into unknown territory from a safe starting town.
>Rotating Cast: A large pool of players participates, but different combinations of adventurers form parties for each session, preventing the need for a single regular group.
>Sandbox World: The world is a sandbox, with the map and plot emerging as players discover new locations and rumors, rather than being dictated by the GM.
>No Fixed Schedule: Sessions occur when players organize themselves, often on a voluntary basis.
>Low GM Prep: The Game Master (GM) focuses on creating a world and potential encounters, responding to player choices, rather than crafting complex plots.
>Self-Contained Sessions: Adventures are often designed to be resolved in a single session, with storylines evolving over time.

To conclude while I wait for chicken to cook (3min left):

I think (>>97324477 >>97324589 >>97324787) were a good sample of how a session would work. I'm not fixing a session into 3 in-game days, but I feel like enough happened that it would take me ~3h+ to run it (especially given that 2 mobs were encountered, and I assume half of those result in combat so at least one fight went on)

At the morning, the party see what is there around the hill they camped during the night (in case they faced the goblin-like creatures), and with that session is over and they automatically return to camp (but now, they already uncovered a lot of territories)

Note that east of that hill I rolled 5 water tiles. Since its so close to coast, I would probably assume those are ocean tiles (even though they haven't connected yet). I think a necessary part to make this style of game happen is to be able to take some liberties to make things make more sense

After (sample) session 1, the leader of the camp (ship's captain) decided to create a watchpost on the hill north of camp (shifts of 2~3 men). The idea is to both keep watch from above in case there's danger incoming, as well as keep a bonfire lit to serve as a beacon to other people lost in the jungle or/and other ships from our fleet to locate us

This would be another example of player's actions/discoveries making impact on the story/scenario (other than naming places, which has no practical impact but I find it really cool)

It makes sense but at this point there isn't much the hexes are doing for you if you're going to try cramming that much into one random roll but having to do it all the time.
Hexes help you keep keyed encounters, which even when minimally organized gives you enoguh of a world vision to properly improvise as the random encounters happen.
Its at a different end of gamestuff but Perilous Wilds has a more generative exploration procedure you might be interested in but its not as well suited to hexes.
>skeptical
Me too. I think you've gotten enough advice and ideas to make something work well enough for a play test to see what is missing, what works, etc.
>no civilization
The party will need someplace that they can reliably return to. Traditionally that's the keep on the borderlands so you've more or less got it.

srsly tho key some hexes and make some factions ahead of time.

>I feel like especially for a LGS situation, a character list could be very practical (though I'm not super happy about the trouble of creating it)
Use an online generator for that. There's likely one for whatever you're running unless its very niche.

I'm not saying you can't have exploration, and of course a West Marches game is great for LGS pickup games. I'm not saying they're a bad game style, if you thought that. I'm saying that *in* a game like that, hexcrawling is an unwelcome and destructive component.

Run the exploration more abstractly, your game will be all the better for it and you can still have that sense of pushing new frontiers.
