What makes a setting don't feel generic a.k.a. not DnD?

That's just Forgotten Realms. A big chunk of the populace is some degree of bisexual.
>>
>>97191156
Imho it's really easy. If the designers don't want to cater to as many people as possible, then it won't be generic. They have to have an artist's mindset, that is to have a vision, and never compromise.

I know, I know. Too difficult these days, because first of all you gotta sell your shit and whatever. But it's really this fucking easy (design-wise).

>I'm not sure what lore can make them more interesting

Have Celestials come into conflict with Adventurers more often. Half the time the Party are crossing a thin line between good natured goofs and murderhobo's who will kill if they're slightly inconvenienced
At the end of some campaigns some party members end up becoming so strong that a large Army means nothing to them, if the murderhobo's got into that kind of power it would be bad news for everyone else. Have Celestials be wary of most Adventurers and outright hostile to the more casual-murder types. As a DM acknowledge how callous your Party is and have the Celestials send some grunts to deal with them every so often and perhaps even go to a Celestial Realm to covert assassinate which ever top dog Celestial is trying to halt your progress
Also giving Celestials more designs that aren't just People with Wings and Constructs would probably help. Fiends are interesting because they all have wacky designs
>>
>>97215880
You can pull a Sailor Moon easily with the whole divine purpose + handler thing. They exist to be driven towards a story goal (almost always killing the evil). That needs to be the DM's focus, but I guess you could play with the idea of an individual engineered to be the doomslayer having to exist in society.
>>
>>97215979
Indirectly calling your players out for playing as bad people causes hurt feelings at the table - that's a cardinal sin that kills games.
>>
>>97215935
>That and the fact that Tieflings can be more interesting visually (also hotter) and being an underdog makes for a more interesting character.
The visuals are a potential factor, but are ultimately secondary in a tabletop game. But the underdog angle is what really pushes it further than other weird-looking races.

>>97215938
The point of consideration is how it translates into a player character. People don't really want to play a character who is going to martyr themselves for the first righteous cause they find, because then the character is dead and you're no longer playing.
As for a PC not being loved by all...that's really the default for most races, isn't it? But the best case scenario there is that you have NPCs treating the character as if they're stuck-up or privileged. Not exactly a lot to work with.
>>
>>97215999
It can go either way, either your Party doesn't like being called out for killing some goon who surrendered after you fireballed his entire team and he wasn't a threat anymore or the Party is totally down to "rise the ranks" and start killing Celestials and looting their corpses

Welcome to /wbg/, the thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art. Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have, cunt!

One of the most prominent ones is the Silver Hand. Started as a "revange plot" against the ruling noble family of the biggest kingdom in the world, with a desire to kill the major members and their supporters. Over time, its members have found some shady shit that is connected to stuff like godhood and also the nature of other world and demons. Nowadays, it has several different 'sects' that have various goals and try to work together, somewhat.
They are also very prominent in alchemical and technological fields. One of their most infamous sub-organizations are alchemically-infused elite murderhobos that have little to no restraint. Other than that, their main power is them having a lot of money and influence.
Named after a punishment performed against thieves and bandits.

As much as I love a lewd orc, I wouldn't subject other players (whether I'm a DM or one of the PCs) to my orc girl fetish. Closest I got was my party getting hired to clear out some forests my a merchant (djinn who was fucking with us) who didn’t mention they were infested with beastmen and orcs and it was gonna be a lot longer than a single “get in fuck shit up and loot” job and we were bound to this thing.

My Paladin led the charge into an orc camp and started going kill-crazy as his barely sentient/primal force moon maiden patron flooded him with zeal and wrath.

At the same time, one the chief’s concubines, who didn’t like being a meat sock for this dink made her move and the party catches up and sees buckethead popping off and being helped by an equally berserk she-orc and the two tore the chief apart.

They got along great after that, she became a recurring character and I retired that character with him and the orc leaving for the “little house on the prairie”

No coomer shit, just the DM taking the cliche and playing it straight (hyper-loyal orc wife where violence is foreplay) and his way of saying my guy was more orc-like than the orc in the party

▶What is Kingdom Death?
Kingdom Death is a tabletop miniature brand stared by Adam Poots and operated by himself and his Team that later spun off into a miniature based bored game funded by two very successful Kickstarter campaigns.

no fancy lighting or anything, but here's what I've painted so far. I don't intend to paint any more of what I have until I go back over these a second time to get them to a higher level. Add eyes and fix faces, fix hair, make shadowing consistent, etc.

I'm glad you like my painting, but to be honest it's very technically simple. 90% of what I do is either drybrushing or washing, no wet blending or anything like that.

You can actually see in the Morgan picture you linked that she has no eyes and I never finished her shoes. Also, the paint cracked on her leg which will have to be fixed.

Again, I want to be very clear about this, these were not hard and fast rules. All Americans were not like that, and there were absolutely Brits who only cared about the game if they won. But because you were generally limited to playing only with the people in your immediate area, whom you were already at least acquaintances with, you had to conform to the attitudes of people around you, or other people would just stop playing with you. Neither side really had an internet community to fall back on and reinforce their behavior, and serious netlisting didn't really start being feasible until mid 3rd edition (I blame this a lot on the DakkaDakka forums).

The two things that were really divisive back then were the existence and power level of eldar (some things don't change), and the guys who would model for advantage. Modeling for advantage was a competitive technique that actually came out of the UK. Americans would just play rules lawyer really hard, but all of the crawling Wraithlords I ever experienced were in London and in Birmingham (fortunately, Birmingham being Birmingham, somebody stole the crawling Wraithlord, which solved the problem).

So in the end, as Americans took up more and more market share, GW changed the game to cater more and more to their attitudes. The narrative basis of the game was essentially extinct by 6e, mid-way through which is when I finally dropped out. But it was clearly on the heavy downswing after 4e.
>The real irony being that the big GW-sponsored get togethers and tournaments were also dying out at the same time, just as competitive play outside of the bounds of a narrative structure became the default method to approach the game.

Considering that many factors of WH40k were originally based on the scifi comic 2000ad, it suggests that this was always the case. It just went corporate, that's all, with a focus going more on what sells to the general masses than what was subversive, satirical, ironic or cool.

That being said enough of my chaos marines are kit bashes with some loyalist bits I can build a fun narrative of the loylaist marine player wanting to kill my dudes to reclaim loyalist wargear or relics and my dudes just doing chaos shit and looting everything they can in the process.

So these guys (stealth suits, if you can't see them)
Pretty interesting against a marine team. When the enemy can move + dash + shove a heavy plasma incinerator in your face, stealth becomes a lot less safe. Ended up not controlling much on the objectives, which combined with an equal score on tac op, kill op, and primary meant a final score of 10-15.
Definitely not a conclusive game in regards to how balanced they are, I made plenty of mistakes, but the stealth was a lot less oppressive than me or my opponent expected.
What I want to see now is how they perform against a 2APL team. Losing that extra dash to reach enemies, and not having the same super reliable kill shots that a team like deathwatch has, might make these sneakers a much less fun team to face. I need to see it to confirm it though.

To be fair, that was mainly because the web novel took place entirely from the shield hero’s pov, which was admittedly extremely vindictive, petty, self-pitying and outright delusional. So the wholesome heckin slave lord narrative wasn’t there initially, since we got to see the shield hero’s rather ruthless and practical viewpoint behind all his seemingly benevolent actions.

It also makes the whole “slave grows up into a hot young adult in a couple weeks” thing far less of a problem by showing he genuinely didn’t notice a difference at first due to obsessing over his own problems and not registering his slave as a person for a while. In fact, all the people saying how beautiful his raccoon girl slave was and how he was a lucky man just made him think the world was full of pedophiles trying to hook him up with a ten year old.

Wasn't meant to help make it more acceptable. I was actually trying to point out something the writer of Shield Hero likely noticed about one of the genre's tropes. Slavery in Isekai is often treated more as adopting a pet you could potentially have sex with rather than a serious social injustice.

>>97215784

Which is why the Shield Hero web novel is identifiable as a deconstruction while the manga and anime verge more toward standard isekais with an edgy protagonist. Most "fans" of the series don't really get as far as the New Seven Deadly Sins arc which shows just how messed up the MC's actions are.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.
