Basically all of the Star Wars streaming shows have had this problem, aside from the second season of Andor. They only ever write sorta-endings, where there's always enough left unresolved to make another season if the show is successful enough.

>The battlegroup has set a trap for the Rebellion.
>They find that a Hypervelocity Gun has been infiltrated by Rebel operatives, waiting for the opportunity to stick it to The Empire.
>Command decides to spring the trap.
>Their small battlegroup chases a Rebel ship until it goes into orbit around the planet.
>The idea is that the Imperial Loyalists have replaced the first volley of the gun with training rounds that will make a good fireworks show, but shouldn't actually do any serious damage to the ship with that first volley.
>The hopes is once the Hypervelocity gun has destroyed the biggest ship, the Rebels main fleet will drop in to finish the rest.
>Then, the loyalists on the ground can retake the gun and use it to destroy the Rebel Fleet.
>The plan goes into action.
>Unfortunately, the Rebels found out about the plan and so the training rounds are replaced with live rounds, ripping the fleets Interdictor in half. 4 Rebel Cruisers then drop out and the fleets begin trading blows.
>Unfortunately, the Rebels are blocking Coms, so the main battle like (3 Imperial Class' and an Allegiance) Join the battle and put themselves in the line of fire for that Hypervelocity Gun.
>The Party are quickly dispatched to the surface to retake the gun before it can fire again.

>2 rounds left before the firing solution activates, slicer gets into the computer.
>Last turn, the slicer manages to target one of the Rebel Cruisers
>Hypervelocity gun fires, cutting an MC75 in half.
>The day is saved and the Rebels bug out.
>But the Slicer notices something. The Hypervelocity gun has targetting solutions plotted for every Imperial Ship in the fleet, except the Allegiance and their own ship, a Stormcommando-Type Escort Carrier.
>Slicer mentions this to the captain.
>Captain laments the reminder that his ship is so small that it's not worth targetting and the Allegiance is the only ship in the fleet that could actually stand up to a volley of Hypervelocity Cannonfire. Making their Imperials and Arquetens' the obvious targets.
>Slicer suspects something else...
Last time, one of the members found out about how their fleet has a growing Rebel Cell inside of it. Not a specifically members of the Rebel Alliance, but a group of Imperials who are sick of being treated as cannonfodder and having to answer mostly to political figures and agenda's (2 of the heads of their battlegroup are low level Moff's trying to climb the political ladder) rather than ACTUAL military men. After witnessing the destruction of Alderaan, he decides to join.

PVP expected sometime soon.

After about 8 years since I last DM'ed a game, I've been asked to run a session.
Unfortunately my books - adnd, 2e, 3e, 3.5, 4e, and 5e are in storage two states away.
And i prefer physical copies. Thanks to critical role and the movie DND books have gone up in price which is weird.
>4e books are ~10-15$ now.

Is it viable to run 4e in 2025? I don't remember hating it and I still remember some home rules to streamline combat to speed it up a touch.
Does anyone have suggestions for 1-3lvl adventures or campaign settings?

While the Essentials line is stinky, to say the least, having Heroes of the Fallen/Forgotten Lands on hand means that you have an easily passed around copy of the core errata. That's part of the reason why I took it off my FLGS's hands some time ago.

This is my experience as well. There's no real baseline power-level for the effects. Sometimes it's basically nothing, other times it drastically swings the fight. The deck is in no way balanced or fair, but then again I guess that's kind of the point. Like, both the 1e and 2e versions of the deck have at least one card that reads something along the lines of "you throw your weapon a random distance in a random direction", and my group has lost two high-level weapons that way--one was hurled overboard at sea, and the other was tossed from the top of a tower into a horde of demons amassed outside.

Also, some of the crit/fumble effects just fucking erase a character. This is especially true for spellcasters. Like, every time you cast a spell with an attack roll, there is a very small chance that you have to make a fort save or (direct quote from the card) "your head explodes and you die." Another card forces two rolls on the Rod of Wonder table, which has a chance to literally teleport you to Hell (no save on either effect). For anything but a high-level character, that's guaranteed death. The decks are honestly terrifying.

Basically, using the crit/fumble decks just adds an extra layer of gambling to every combat encounter, with stakes that are shockingly high.
>>
>>97238140
Correction: as the other Anon mentioned, not EVERY combat encounter, as by default the cards basically have the incapacitation trait.

I need some advice with a homebrew item that I'll give to the swashbuckler PC, level 4. Is it too strong to have a glove that lets you, at the cost of one action, add 1d6 energy damage to your weapon until the end of your turn, four times a day? The glove has four gems each representing fire, cold, electricity and acid, and each gem can be used once a day. I based it off the smoking sword active, and considering I run long days, it probably won't be spammed. Then I realized it can be stacked with things like smoking sword and flaming runes for big deeps.

Should I drop the damage to 1d4? I was originally thinking of making the item do more interesting things with the elements but the swashbuckler player probably will enjoy being able to deal with swarms, oozes and other gimmicky creatures that I tend to throw at the party.

>wasn't there a runelord girl notorious for being one?
You're thinking of Sorshen. The Runelord of Lust. She's considered a special snowflake because she's presented as a quirk chungus who got genre-savvy and recognized "Runelord" is another word for, "End Boss" and there are PCs in the world going through a check-list. The thing that gets people riled up with Sorshen is as follows,
>Got redeemed when Paizo was first getting big on "Woke."
>Got redeemed off-screen
>Got redeemed and told the players, "Nu uh don't hit her she's good now" when she's on-screen.
>Her profile is literally just Nocticula

In a vacuum, Sorshen would've been fine. Who doesn't want a sexy wine aunt? But this was fresh off the heels of War for the Crown where Paizo was very, very obvious you're working for Hillary Clinton fighting Big Mean Donald Drumpf. I'm not even going to get into those politics because everyone has their opinions on the madness of the late 2010s, but it completely reframed what Sorshen was meant to be into some dumb "progressive" update to the lore (I could've sworn they even said that they didn't want to Slut Shame when explaining Sorshen) which further added the disconnect between what the Devs intended with a character vs what Players wanted out of them.

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

Can they not throw a lego into a large trash can?

The point is that the players can concentrate to improve their chances and really feel the combat.

Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle.

If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

It's a shame this thread is made by some subhuman shitposter because there is a point here that I agree with. GMing, in a sense, is a talent. Not everyone can do it. Sure, it's also a skill that can be honed, but you need a certain baseline of capability to start GMing at all. I'm not entirely sure what that talent consists of, though I think atleast 50% of it is being intelligent. If you are stupid, chances are you're a shit GM. But then again, I also know some smart people who make for dreadful GMs, albeit for different reasons.
>>
>>97232339
So wait, /tg/ has MULTIPLE mod-protected redditors spamming the board?
>>
>>97238028
>You're telling a story together and everything the GM does should be in service of a more interesting story
More to the point, it's more realistic. If the guy who's plans you've foiled all game crits you and the crit table makes him beef it it's lame. Inb4 "just decide what he does you're the GM!": No. I'm not deciding every little interaction. I'm here to roll dice and tables too, so whoever says this can stuff this line so far up their ass they burp its flavor.
>>97235121
Btw dramatic rerolls and improv mechanics are literally the two advantages TTRPG has over video games. If I wanted to play a fun world where anything could happen with my friends and it have near perfect rules, I could easily find a minecraft modpack that fits the bill. Or just play Terraria again.
>>
>>97238671
DESU, even if it's true that some people are just utter gobshite at it, I still prefer they at least try to learn from either experience or from people that have sensible advice instead of staying cloistered in these threads acting bitter over their supposed lack of talent and parroting bad advice to one another like a crab bucket. It's like artwork and AI. There are plenty of people out there that have neither the talent nor discipline to become good at it, and that's fine. But that doesn't make LLMs a replacement for art, it just makes LLMs a different avenue for image creation. I'd rather a poor GM that's willing to learn from mistakes and accept advice over the shitposters on reddit and /tg/ that act like know-it-alls despite never playing games anymore.

A fundamentally monstrous creature (eldritch horror, biblical angel, sapient ooze, etc., something that clearly isn't humanoid or common-animal shaped) that disguises itself as a human but has a really poor understanding of how humanoids think and behave. The narrative draw would be (poorly) learning about humanity, while the combat draw would be playing a giant monster.
For all the goofy backstories and character identities modern DMs and GMs allow, it's rather disappointing how few of them allow nonhumanoid characters, and those that do tend not to care much about the rules of the game in the first place. Most of them won't even allow such a creature trapped in a human body (basically, just a mechanically normal character with a weird backstory), though playing a downgrade would be a copout to begin with. I can't really blame them though, as I myself wouldn't let someone play that sort of character in my usual campaigns (I did host a "players play the monsters in a dungeon and fight off adventurers" game once though, which was great). Perhaps one day, I too will get to play in a "monster party" game

If we're talking about characters the typical D&D campaign is designed to handle though, then playing a stereotypical rogue would be nice sometime. Nothing particularly special there, just a guy that's really good at being sneaky. Most games I play in tend not to care about stealth or subtlety in general, so I've somehow never played one in the past decade. Hopefully, an opportunity to change that will arise sometime.

Back in the day I've had a friend, who played this guy. He was a wizard school dropout and a huge chuunibyou. One day he decided to dress up in black armor, put on a spiked helmet and name himself after a random mangled latin word he half-remembered from a lecture. Thus was born the evil overlord lord Gastron, who set out into the world to build his evil empire.
Immediately he met our characters - the actually evil party, who decided to make him our leader and humor his delusions, because we've thought it would be funny

The campaign fizzled out after like 3 sessions, so we didn't get far, but I've always wanted to emulate him and play that character myself

You're allowed to "show off" in general, you won't fall for doing things with a flourish. You just shouldn't act for the purposes of looking cool, you aren't allowed to go make a big monster attack a city so you can stop it and look like a hero for doing it or whatever. You can be as cool as you want, but you can't go around trying to get a nice big reputation for personal profit.

But yes, the reasoning here is also entirely correct, if you're doing it for a good reason its fine.

>That encourages a highly pragmatic, practical lifestyle and outlook, as well as either discouraging empathy (because you don't want to think about the feelings of the orcs you're killing), or simply doesn't care about it most of the time
Based on my experiences with combat soldiers who routinely are exposed to life-threatening situations, there's also a 100% chance that the adventurer would be a massive slut. Not because they're a woman, but because basically EVERYONE who gets into that situation, where you could die in any day and you know it turns into a massive slut when they're somewhere safe. You end up just living for that day and barely considering the long view, if at all.

But it's not ok for a man to depict a woman as an invertate slut, even if it's a logical consequence of the situation she finds herself in.

Pax ren is mainly a testosterone check if you think about it, nonconfrontational pussies will never be able to play it

The game only buckbreaks people who (like me) are used to getting everything from an upfront teach and (unlike me) won't be game for an grasp-it-as-you-play approach which is very much needed here. I don't think I know any other game THAT resistent to being groked from a dry teach alone.

i have decided not to get the old king's crown, it's average game length would put off my game group

First of all Merry Christmas.

That took a lot of restraint not to do, I wonder if the players can even fathom how vulnerable their characters were. Or if they could imagine their characters making the same realization.

Relating to before, if I don't hear a peep from them by Monday I'll need to push for an actual convo about expectations. I'm didn't expect them to have answered before Christmas, but when I lay a month (or more) of downtime at their feet I'm gonna be left confused if no one uses it for anything. And some of them have brought up things they'd wanna do, like helping some rescued NPCs get home. It's not stuff that has to be done during the actual session (that we have 4 hours of, every 2 weeks...)

Names have power.
>Play a campaign where we give survivors only biblical names
>Pure suffering, but power through until the Hand lv2
>Greek names
>First time we successfully complete a campaign
>Norse names
>Fantastic luck until we get cocky and start trying to get cheeky with Dragon King and everything goes to hell
>Japanese names
>Successfully complete People of the Sun for the first time
>Aztec names
>Incredibly rough start of People of the Dream but somehow we power through and manage to almost complete it
>Silly names
>Gigalion rapes us
>Horny names
