Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>what is the most streamlined way to prepare a hexmap for my group of Pathfinder players to get a few sessions of play out of
Anon gave you a great answer, but as an alternative suggestion, consider not prepping your own map at all and using one of the Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps. They're a little bit harder to read than the colorful Basic-style maps, but the playability is unmatched, and if you want to expand the area of play there are lots more maps ready to hand. You can just plonk your dungeon down in any hex that seems reasonable. Alternatively there are also various remakes of the original Outdoor Survival map that was recommended for use in the original D&D box set from 1974; pic related is one. I hope you enjoy it, Anon!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he made them as supplementary material for an ASE game he was running. It looks like all his stuff for it is on the All Dead Generations blog now, together with some of his embarrassing political rambling.

>How is labyrinth lord?
It's B/X, so it's good. Personally I like the way he implemented addon AD&D material (in the Advanced Edition Companion) better than the way Norman did it for OSE, but that's a matter of taste.

Welcome, friend. You seem to have a good measure of "the spirit of the game" and I'm sure you'll have a great campaign going forward. Others gave you fantastic advice. GFC is an absolute treasure as is Melan (the Beyond Fomalhaut fellow linked above). I'd also recommend Prince of Nothing's Age of Dusk blog, though he primarily does module reviews. His musings are good stuff, though, and his No Artpunk module contest collections are rock solid. I would also urge you to poke around old articles from magazines like Fight On! and Dragon. Lots of stuff to shamelessly steal for your games in there.
As someone who converted his group from PF and 5E to AD&D, I feel it's crucial to set the hook early. I don't mean in a storygame way, mind you, but give them something they want to get done. A solid dungeon that they can't reasonably finish in a handful of sessions, but with the promise of more treasure if they push on. Something like that. Obviously you have a better measure of your players than we do, but if you are enjoying the OSR style then you'll have to convince your group, through gameplay, that it should be your primary game after the first few sessions. You could run one of the established classics like Keep on the Borderlands or what have you. Or you could mess around with Appendix A from the DMG and roll your own dungeon. If you go that route, I recommend being a bit malleable with some of the interpretations of the results. It's a great way to start getting a dungeon hammered out, but don't be beholden to what it creates. Use the results for inspiration and guidance, but get creative with it! GFC has a great video regarding traps that shows a great method for making your own.

(Cont.)
As far as making a setting goes, I recommend not fleshing out everything before you start. Give yourself an aesthetic you're aiming for (mine is "somewhere between Tolkien and Conan by way of Frazetta"), decide what sort of biome you want to start the players in (frozen north, deep woods, coastal region etc.) and hammer out the rough shape. At least one major city if appropriate, maybe some hamlets and villages, key landmarks. Then establish some basic stuff regarding political things like rulership and antagonizing forces. I feel that things move much more smoothly if you just let things develop organically though you may prefer a more rigid method. Beyond that, just go for it! Sit down and start putting stuff to paper. I'm sure you'll have something great shaping up before you know it.

Also, I second Wilderlands of High Fantasy. The booklet can be a bit difficult to parse but it's fantastic for stocking hexmaps.
>>97284550
I really like LL. I would like to pick up a copy but don't really have the need at the moment as I don't play B/X. I may pick up 2E when the physical book releases.

why are many creators so afraid of making a setting with napoleonic wars era technology?

Despite the Napoleonic fanboys' delusional talk, it's not a popular period among normies and hobbyists-lite. The warfare of that era becomes too complex for your average DnD-tier nerd to understand, the period is not hitting you with the "individual heroes and deeds" vibes like the medieval period for example. The easy answer therefore is, it wouldn't sell because your average fantasy consumer is a fantasy consumer and you don't need a genius to create a story of sword-swinging murder-hobos adventuring.

I use two bray-shamans that way instead of a wargor. Hunters spear, not sure on. There are better items for shamans is all. Adding Scourge of burdened on the wargor would also be great cause then you get asshole powers for your shaman. Cast it on him, move him into a forest, cast your magic missile, move back out of forest to prevent line of sight. Best defense for mages is just being invisible.
It's also why goretooth is worth it if you're not playing wild herd. Lore of primal is really good.

Something that makes infantry want to charge instead of only take charges. Just to spitball some mutually exclusive ideas:
Infantry v infantry charges don't get the double fighting line.
Infantry v infantry charges both get the double fighting line
All charges get extra ranks on the charge based on overcharge distance - for every 2" further than needed +1 ranks charging get to attack as supporting attacks. I like this cause it also makes cavalry want larger units and acts as a good point sink.
If your infantry unit strength is higher than opponents infantry unit strength, charging causes fear.
I dunno, make infantry want to charge damnit.

It might help to know how you plan for him to be changed mentally. Ideally (imo) the changes would be related somehow and reinforce each other. IE, he starts getting super paranoid or hyper aware of certain things, and now he also gets an ache in his joints whenever he's around certain sorts of magic or something.

Eye color changes are also an easy one and can be very simple to make thematic.

New here and curious.
Are these like character builders instead of story maker games?
>>
>>97284299
What? You mean cyoas in general? It's a better question for the other thread but yes, the vast majority are essentially a character builder, then you are free to imagine the story in your head. That's how they are supposed to work, as a self-insert most of the time, but this thread specifically uses them a little differently. After making the character we start the process of telling the story collaboratively instead of completely by ourselves. There are some exceptions, like Peil's Life Chronicles that have a more stuctured and involved adventure part, but those are rarer and they don't work for what we do in here.
>>
>>97284299
>>97284334
>It's a better question for the other thread

>>
>>97284374
yeah I thinking exactly this, /m/ looked a lot chiller

>>97284334
oh cool, so it's mostly building a PC and making a story from the implied lore? instead of say, a few pages of encounters to pick from?
>>
>>97285155
Pretty much. There are cyoas that provide encounters for you to imagine your character dealing with or even jave mechanics for determining the outcome based on the options picked prior. The way someone usually goes about playing is picking their options and posting the build, optionally with meta reasoning for their picks and a bit on how they imagine things playing out. Here it's pretty standard to include a somewhat in depth bio.

>join a game
>it's a new system
>spend time looking through book, get ideas, munchkin slightly to at least have a good mechanic character, think backstories and character immediately, be excited to play
>takes me a few hours to get my character in
>at worst, it takes a day
>everyone else takes like 2 fucking weeks because hurr durr gotta read a book and that's so difficult life comes first

>join a game
>its 5e DnD shit
>since it's the most popular shit and easy to make just need to think of a character and ask what others are playing
>get a character in 1 hour
>others take fucking days to week
>life, job, friend, vidya whatever is the excuse
Fuck. normalfags. Kill them all. Tabletop and nerd culture becoming the hip thing to do is the worst thing that has happened to this once niche culture.
I work 40 hours a week, play vidya, workout, have to take out parents/grandparents out to eat on holidays and birthdays, and I can meet schedule and play tabletop just fine because this is my hobby and has been my hobby for 20 years. If you truly love something you can make time for it. There is no excuse.

I've noticed this.
I agree with this.
It pisses me off, but I don't know how to confront my friends about it without alienating them.
I don't know why they insist on playing with me every week, but don't seem to care about the hobby like I do. I enjoy learning the rules, figuring out the world, hell, I even like just quietly sitting there reading the books and imagining games that could be. I like roleplaying too.
My group doesn't give a shit. Only one other guy can even be counted on to read the rules, and he's our forever DM. He's taking a break so another guy can run right now, and SURPRISE, he didn't decide to read the rules and figured he's just learn it as he went. Luckily it's OSRS shit so the rules are usually the same, but it's definitely a huge annoyance when he references 5e D&D concepts that aren't supposed to exist.
>>
>>97275912
>run a game for my friends
>I've built an Excel character sheet that prompts them for any and all inputs and performs all calculations
>fifteen minutes to build a character, tops, and it can then be printed into a clean and easily-referenced copy for use at the table
>this also means that, if they haven't done it by session time, I can sit them down and take care of it while everyone else is getting the dice out and picking seats
With a little bit of effort, your games can be all but frictionless.

This is a second OSRG, seperate from the main osrg thread, where you CAN talk about 2e, retroclones, and any osr content you want.
This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

Mid-Colonial Island Adventure Setup & System Help
Hello fa/tg/uys and a happy new year. I'm planning a new campaign and would appreciate your collective wisdom. I'll lay out the pitch and would like your thoughts, ideas, and especially system recommendations.
The year is roughly equivalent to the early 1700s. The players are new arrivals or long-term residents of an island colony. Mere weeks after their arrival it becomes apparent that no ships from the homeland arrive. Ships sent out for help or trade simply vanish. The colony is now utterly isolated. Resources are finite, society is beginning to crack, and the unexplored interior holds ancient secrets.

>Resource Scarcity
No contact with the outside world. Every nail, bolt of cloth, and ounce of gunpowder is precious. Gold is the main currency, and it matters—for buying scarce supplies, hiring help, bribing officials or mayby hiring trainers if gold can be tied to character advancement.
>Low-to-Mid Magic
Magic is rare. Players won't be casting spells at the start. It's something discovered in the forest ruins or bargained for with strange spirits mid-campaign. Church sanctioned magic is the exception with high ranking members of the faith having access to considerable magical power.
>Healers for Hire
There are a few lowly priests of the faiths that can perform rudimentary healing rituals but demand some gold or favors. This type of healing and warding, especially against diseases, is used by the church to maintain power and influence. They're NPCs, not party members, at least initially and the most common source of magic.
>Zero to Hero
I would really like for the player to start really low powered. More akin to semi-skilled commoners than competent adventures and it should take time for them to actually become strong and capable. I would like for them to eventually become big players in the island. Maybe even hold titles or positions of power.

well it sounds like a perfect fit for mythras to me. these low power, commoner to hero, low magic kinda realistic games are the type of games it excels at
>>
>>97280104
colonial gothic is also an underrated game that i ppreciate and would fit very well what you re trying to do
>>
you should probably use the Barbarians of Lemuria system to play this; with some of the added rules from Honor+ Intrigue, which explicitly is designed for games set in the 17th-18th century.
>>
Thanks you all kindly for your system recommendations. Currently I am leafing through the ones I could find.
>>97277226
I would like something less rigid that the class system offered in OSE. For starters I wouldn't like anyone starting as a magic-user. It's generally too high-fantasy/magic for my use case, I think.
SotDL Could kind of work. The path system and traditions are flexible enough and could be introduced later in the campaign. I would agree that D6s are swingy as boon/banes. D4s don't roll. D3 sound like a good compromise.
>>97279797
Couldn't get my hands on beyond the wall for free yet. I don't know If it's available in the share thread, I will look it up. Mythras indeed looks like something that could work for my use case but I will have to find whatever sourcebooks support a 1700s setting better because the core seems more focused in a fantasy bronze age.
>>97279904
I respect Varg for being a dedicated and professional LARPer but I have at least two players that would refuse to touch any game with his name on it. Good point on gunpowder though. I haven't thought about making the island volcanic but maybe I will. Colonial Gothic seems too into it own thing to be of use but I will add it to my reading list.
>>97282747
Barbarians of Lemuria/honor+intrigue seems like a good fit generally. The way careers and magic work is very fitting but I am afraid it will be far too pulpy for what I am going for. .
>>
>>97283263
>but I have at least two players that would refuse to touch any game with his name on it.
That is understandable
>Good point on gunpowder though. I haven't thought about making the island volcanic but maybe I will.
My understanding is most Caribbean islands are or were volcanic, and even dormant/extinct volcanoes will still have the sulfur mineral deposits left behind. There are also non-volcanic sources of sulfur. Gypsum can form from lake or sea water evaporating in an area or in caves and other deposits. That is trickier to turn into plain usable sulfur, but if you wanted to say it can be done more easily with magic, it would not be much of a stretch. Pulling an element that is already in the mineral out and extracting it sounds like babby level alchemy.

Another thing to consider is wherever the gunpowder is actually produced and stored is also very vulnerable. Even in the modern day with modern safety practices, the only black powder producing plant in the US blew up in 2021.

Not that I know of. Maybe painting in very small patches and letting each patch dry completely before moving on to a patch on the opposite side of the piece. Or slowly "drybrushing" the whole piece and never truly having a pile of wet paint on it at any point.

Meanwhile, in reality

>In the game Werewolf: The Apocalypse, the Garou (werewolves) were made to defend the earth from the cosmic forces that threaten to tear it apart. The Garou fight against the Wyrm, the destroyer. It is a struggle against nearly insurmountable odds, especially considering the rivalry between many tribes. These rivalries make it almost impossible for the werewolves to present a unified front against a cosmic force that pervades reality.
>From this morass of hatred and mutual betrayal, there is little hope that the Garou can emerge triumphant against a foe so well armed as the Wyrm. The Wyrm promises money, power, sex, and whatever else the heart desires to its followers while the Garou receive no reward for their striving. It drives them deeper and deeper into despair, or into betrayal so deep that they choose to serve the Wyrm instead.

The CoG are the only Garou capable of winning the war because they're not so stupid as to think "all we need to do is kill entropy durrr". Get are #1 most likely to fall to the Wyrm repeating exactly what the Wyrm Howlers did.

Looks great!

I won't spam this general with my shit but I just wanted to follow up. After my daughter went down I did a sketch of basic troop. Head and arms are place holders, legs are not anywhere near started.

I know the AP palette is shit, but what about the other palettes like AK are actually better? Like what are the different qualities that make them superior?
>Amazon reviews give the AP one 5 stars
What is wrong with these people?

I use the new-ish Redgrass one(everlasting they call it) and I'm really happy with it. It uses those membranes or someshit instead of paper so it doesn't overthin your paints, they stay at the consistency you prepared for a while, it's very convienient. If you don't mind forking some extra dough it's well worth it imho.

Probably nothing, considering how effective AP marketing is. I would say most of them are simply beginners who don't know any better, because that's the #1 AP target demographics. It's like your usual reddit circlejerk; redditor #1 asks what paints to buy, redditor #2 to #4000 will tell him to get AP because they literally had no experience with anything else.
Besides that, I would argue that Amazon reviews were never really telling about the quality of a product.

Welcome to /wbg/, the thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art. Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have, cunt!

It's a very old trope. I'm a major Mecha fan.

>>97281836
And yes, one of the inspirations.
>>
"Innocent girl gets used as a weapon" is actually inspired by the original Mobile Suit Gundam, specifically Lalah Sune, a young sex worker that was groomed by Char and Zeon to be a psychic super-soldier. Her close emotional connection with Amuro, the protagonist, and her tragic death at his hands made her something of a hit with the melodramatic audiences of that era.

And we've been plagued with magic space psychic girls since.

>Realistically what would life in a world of superheroes where your ability is defined by your bloodline be like?
Well, for a start, bloodline powers means secret identities do fuck all unless your entire family tree keeps that shit secret, so masks are out.

Also means supervillains would be pretty rare for the same reason. You aren't gonna have people start trying to crime when their powers are basically a fingerprint unless they're immediately willing to live on the run. There's a difference between running after you get caught and running in the first place and people willing to do A aren't necessarily going to be willing to do B.

So they are basically Wolverines and can start hunting humans.

Feet, skull faces and shadows seem quite off. It would be good to see the model in action. There's been some low key persistent trolling with the ai posts and getting mad at people for having books.
