Everyone on this board will tell you that the rules don't matter, hell, getting anyone here to talk about games at all is harder than pulling teeth.
It's all about stories and worldbuilding, so why would you be under the impression you'd need to learn anything?

Players only need to know

>How to make a character and what their stats and skills do
>Combat procedures (initiative, number of actions, movement, attacking and damaging)
>Only the spells, feats, abilities, powers, moves, etc their character has right now and what they do

Even as the GM, you need to know
>The basic rules
>How to run combat, more or less identical to the players
>What the estimated difficulty should be for a given party's level/strength
>How to read a statblock or how to construct an antagonist
>how to roughly structure a session and then campaign

If you are reading every book cover to cover, believing you need to know every spell, every max-level abilities, every piece of equipment, every magic item, and so on, you are doing things wrong. Majority of all RPGs books operate on a type of "Need to Know" philosophy. If you're level 1, it doesn't matter what abilities you get at level 17, or what that 9th level spell does or whatever. You CAN learn those things if you're interested, but you don't NEED to know them. So if you are strictly interested in getting the game going ASAP you only read and learn the things that matter, and look up rules or make rulings when you need to.

it was a warehouse in a village in northern England with a little shopfront. shared a big warehouse space with a shopfitting company, so the wargame crowd had access to wood-cutting equipment and other tools. middle-aged men basically lived in there like it was a pub, just making models all day.

for events, they'd lay out long rows of tables and then the younger crowd would come in for e.g. Magic: The Gathering tournaments. the place was still a mess with random scrap and tools lying everywhere (plus the owners' dogs roaming around) but it was amazing.

nowadays, the UK has moved more towards little 'gaming cafés' that are totally pristine and you all get cramped onto a small table to play D&D, usually paying by the hour. i hate it so much, bros.

Damn are you me? A "gaming cafe" has opened up near me just in the summer, it's alright but it only has cuck sized tables, soulless 3d printed 40k terrain and charges by the hour, with a full game costing about £7.50 a person, which is frankly ridiculous. Still, when the other LGS in my town is an old pet store with exposed brick and wiring all over the walls and smells and has old pet store stuff everywhere, maybe the "gaming cafe" is the better choice. Anyway I drive into the city to play at a club in a card store where the tables work out at about £4 a game and there's great terrain.

For your next campaign, I’d heavily recommend the 3rd party supplement “Blood Money”. It basically turns the campaign and missions into mercenary work with job payouts and an operation clock. It’s also noticeably harder since you only get full repairs when the clock expires, and you can potentially have 9 combats before a full repair if the party wants to get obscene rewards.

I'll look into it for sure, thanks. They're coming off of other systems and started the campaign as mercenaries so not having any money and mostly progressing by the default Lancer method has been a bit weird for them, especially when they try to play their characters as greedy and scummy types. I try to accommodate as necessary but players always throw curve balls at you every once in a while.

Definitely check it out. It’s been one of the most dynamic campaigns I’ve run, and my players who are usually goodie-two shoes are constantly at odds with doing work for horrible people because the payout is sometimes that good, and there’s like 150+ things you can spend money on in that supplement.

one more read, I don’t wanna seem like I’m whining or nitpicking but if the Santa curse, the Mature Idea, was spreading through gifts, I don’t see how Kaoru’s danger sense (and for that matter, Ran’s) wouldn’t have activated. Not just that, but clothes with a microphone on them would be a gift she’d probably distrust (even if in other circumstances she’d be happy to take a gift from Madoka) because the microphone could easily be activated on you first. Not to say Kaoru would be a bitch about it or distrust Madoka to her face, since that would be a regression of her character, but she wouldn’t trust THAT kind of gift. She might be doubtful, like “where did you get that from, Madoka? Who knows if that’s already activated, it could be recording us” in a way that makes Madoka rethink the gift. I understand if you just needed an officer-like character to track down the good guys, but I don’t know if Kaoru would be the type to 1. Accept that kind of gift 2. Trust the sudden upsurge of Christmas spirit in July, and 3. Become fully brainwashed. Kaoru is a very paranoid, neurotic person that doesn’t take things at face value whatsoever, even if she’s learning to trust her friends and be honest with them.

I don’t want to be a wet blanket, anon, you clearly worked really hard on this and I don’t want you to rewrite this, but do you mind if I recontextualise Kaoru’s involvement in this story if I reference it in my future writing? Nothing that you wrote has to necessarily change, I’d just add a little twist to bring it a little more in line with something she’d actually do.

I actually liked the story otherwise. Nice job!

40k humans are exactly this, the weakest shittiest species in the galaxy that only got far because they’re basically a swarm of rats (and because they have plot armor). But otherwise they have no specialty and are very “middle ground” in terms of ability compared to xenos. You can write them “well” its entirely dependent on the skill of the writer.

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

No, he would require Khan to do that and he'd come in off the sides. You couldn't just come in from reserves anywhere at the time, you had to arrive from your table edge unless you were outflanking (a specific, declared rule) or you were Snikrot, who could specifically come in on the enemy's edge. This is providing this is 5th, which I believe it is since the deployment type seems to be "Dawn of War" (deploy HQ and two troops, everything else in reserve) and null deployment on Dawn of War was very common. This deployment type added to the mechanization if 5th ed armies, but that's a different topic. It meant 1/3 of the time your static firepower had to walk onto the table, so they couldn't shoot at all and couldn't run since that wasn't a thing.

As I vaguely understand it (and will be happy to be told otherwise by more experienced anons), units entering the battle need to start a certain distance away from the other enemy units currently on the battlefield for the sake of fairness so that you don't get a scenario where one guy watches their opponent set up their army and then just completely encircle them from all sides like an antlion pit. And while there are a few units that can get around that to a degree, bikes aren't one of them.

It might actually be 4th edition, since I think the other player is running the obscure Kroot Mercenaries list which was no longer supported in 5th edition. Or he might just be playing Tau but with an inordinate amount of Kroot. Kroot Mercenaries was an absolutely shit-tier list (for one, literally the only unit in the whole army with access to any kind of anti-tank weapon was your HQ unit, which could take a meltagun), making the whole thing extra funny.

You normally had to deploy your models within a certain distance of your own table edge, though some units had a rule where they could be held in reserve, and some scenarios had some units always start in reserve. If held in reserve, they'd be moved to the board from their owner's table edge during the movement phase (the exact mechanics depend on the edition, but IIRC at this time it was something like half the reserved units come in on turn 1, and for the rest you roll a die to see when they enter), following all normal rules of movement (i.e. they couldn't move through terrain considered impassable or through enemy units). At the time units in reserve could only enter from the player's own table-edge, barring a handful of special characters that let you enter from other table edges (from 6th edition onward a bunch of units, including bikes, were given a rule that let them enter from the sides of the table that weren't either player's deployment zone). The Kroot are one of the units with an "infiltrator" special rule that let them be placed on the board after both sides had deployed their other units, and they could be deployed anywhere that wasn't within a certain distance from enemy units. And since the bike player started the game with nothing on the board, the Kroot could be placed anywhere, including right on the opponent's table edge.
