Do you prefer systems with a strict class-based martial/caster division or classless systems that allow anyone to dip into anything at the cost of never being great at it?
>>97229027Yes. Class games make new campaigns more fun, you get to try new mechanics that were not available before. Classless games can only offer the same experience if they have enough variety in their possible options.

>>97229027If my players (my wife and child) want something other than just being a person, they've got to seek it out in the world. And everything comes at a cost either in gold, or (mis)deeds. It's basically 5e but I've removed all classes and most racial abilities. They also don't really level up. My daughter has learned Detect Magic as a ritual from the village wise man. She does hunting and combat with a crossbow her dad taught her to use, and is pretty stealthy. My wife has learned to fight with a sword and shield from the old war veteran who lives in the village, in order to help defend against bandit raiders while the majority of men are out fighting in the war. Currently, they are investigating a group of bandits that have taken over the local iron mine. They already assassinated the leader of the bandits who camped at the shrine to a forgotten forest spirit. They cleaned the shrine and my daughter was granted limited use of a version of the entangle spell through an amulet. The bandit leader had a book on breathing exercises for fighters that resulted in the Second Wind ability for my wife. These new abilities will be a big deal if they end up fighting the bandits head-on, or running away for that matter. Yes, I could call my wife's character a fighter and my daughter's a ranger... But where's the fun in that?! My wife keeps ambushing people and stabbing them in the back if she can... So she might develop sneak attack at some point. And if she somehow
>>97229035Letting people build their own characters inevitably leads to metagaming. The correct answer is to ask your players what they want to play, and then building the specifics of the characters yourself so that all characters are equally minmaxed, and then I lay allowing character advancement based on what the characters have been practicing in the game. The guy who only talks and never swings a sword doesn't get better at swordplay as he gets more experienced. The less control players have over the mechanics of their characters the objectively better the game will be
Everyone I know who watches Fatt Coville videos is a fucking terrible GM. I've never fully watched one and I am widely considered the best GM out of all 3 groups I'm part of. I am regularly requested to run campaigns. People borderline fall asleep in the games others run. There's also no tension because they know that these Coville acolytes will fudge rolls until all PCs survive the battle. If you're a good GM, it's an inmate talent you can hone over time. You're born that way. If you aren't, then no amount of shitty advice is going to make up for your lack of talent. It just is what it is. This idea that everyone should "try" DMing is retarded. The idea that anyone can be good at it? lolno. Its like some fat divorced on who suddenly decides he's gonna become a famous author. Fat chance. Most people fucking suck at GMing. Hell, most of them suck at playing, but at least in that case the game depends less on them.

Holiday EditionDiscuss and post elves. Elf lore, gameplay, and art are all appreciated.QOTT: What are some of the best gifts to give elf-lovers? What gifts would you give to lovers of other races/species/ancestries/whatever?
I've been inspired by Dwarf Fortress recently and like the idea of elves being the total nature related race (nothing new here), but part of that includes not using any metal tools or weapons; instead using magically formed wood or bone or whatever else. I'm just not sure if it really fits the "high elf" aesthetic of being masters of various crafts or if it's too unrealistic.
This thread makes me wish I had plans to play an elf pc at some point soon, but it will be months before I can do so.I have 1 human, 1 dwarf, 1 dhampir lined up, unless one of them dies.... anyone got a pic of a fire magic using elf? Not too flashy in garb?
>Session 1 of buddy's new campaign>It's clear he hasn't read the rules at all and is totally winging it
>>97232863based
>>97232932What are you confused about?
>>97232863I dunno man I'd withhold all that opinion for after session 3. A DM might have put all his work elsewhere at first and then collides with his noobism and has to repair that between sessions.
>>97230596The true judge of such a DM is if you point out a rule that you know is in the game that he doesnt know of. Does he accept it and let you use it, does he just say no and carries on with his lobotomised version, or does he maim or kill your character in the next adventure as revenge or to regain dominance over you?
>>97234155None of those answers are correct. The CORRECT answer is to ask the player citing the rule where the rule is in the rulebook, check the rules to make sure it's actually there AND actually does what the player is claiming, and then make a decision on whether or not to include that rule in your game. A truly *good* GM will say words to the effect of "I'm going to use this/not use this right this moment, but consider this ruling non-binding so I can have time to think about how this might affect the game in the future and I'll make a binding call over whether to include this rule at a later time." Making snap judgements at the table on whether to include a rule you'd hithertofore missed is never a good idea, and a good GM will make a ruling right there in the moment, but will fully consider the ramifications of that rule in a more stable environment, and the players should accept that the GMs ruling at the table may not be final.
To preface, I'm an MTG veteran. My first Precon was Coven Counters in 2021 and I've been an EDH player ever since. After years of playing, I think the WUBRG elemental may just do me in. Gimmick synergy, tribal, a real throw in anything somewhat related type of commander potential. It also has the most forced WUBRG ability to date: being able to pay WUBRG in order to keep an Elemental you Evoked is utter bullshit. It completely defeats the purpose of Evoke and is just a continuation of "drop a set, put whatever you want under 1 commander."I hate it, you hate it, and it's just a slap in the face of previous WUBRG Legendaries that tried to be something more than tribal or gimmick synergy, or just cram some WUBRG ability in last second, such as [[Atogatog]] [[General Tazri]] [[Golos, Tireless Pilgrim]] [[Jodah, the Unifier]] [[Jenson Carthalion, Druid Exile]] [[Morophon, the Boundless]] [[Najeela, Blade Blossom]] and [[Ramos, Dragon Engine]] . And I'm missing a shitton of other WUBRG Legendaries that could be Commanders. But let's look at the new WUBRG Legendaries that could be Commanders (hint: they're all tribal, gimmick synergy, or cram in a WUBRG ability last second): [[Avatar Aang]] [[Cosmic Spider-Man]] [[Hei Bai, Forest Guardian]] [[Heroes in a Half Shell]] and [[Infinite Guideline Station]] .As long as WotC keeps dropping cards like [[Horde of Notions]] , MTG will die very soon and for real this time.

>>97232619Good seeing you around Mekton.Glad that I’m on the right track by the sound of it. More confident just seeing that others have the same solution. That bit about damage to armor vs unarmored works naturally with my system just from how damage reduction works.>damage reduction applies to all damage dice that makes up the attack>rifles might deal 2d10 damage while shotguns might do something like 6d4>on a moderately armored target(2 damage reduction) the rifle would do an average of like, 7 damage vs 4>with no damage reduction the rifle deals 11 vs the shotgun’s 15
>>97232619Shotguns have their appeal for me in either just being unga bunga "close range big damage" because it's cool, or for using them as scatter blasters to pick off sensitive parts like optics and light vehicles. So you could give them a flak-like effect with a chance for inflicting damage to outer parts.https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/12342
>>97232721Other things you might consider:>If your melee and ranged attacks use different stats, then shotguns give ranged builds a close option>If ranged weapons normally take penalties against close targets shotguns could bypass that.
>>97232721>>97229990don't know how mekton works but, the way I built shotguns on my PF2E hack is that they can hit multiple targets due to a scatter property, and they can deal good damage but they don't gain stat bonuses on said damage, meaning a rifle has lower, but more "consistent" damage while the shotgun can deal between 3 to 18 damage in a shot. They also all have recoil so you can't run and gun with them. Some of them also have "Razing" which makes them deal more damage when hitting structures. From what I read and what you described, for mekton, you could probably add an area effect damage to them, give them a "critical range" where they deal a bit more damage or making them deal low amounts of damage to multiple parts (which add in total to high damage).
>>97232619>Logically, shells full of scattering shot are a much better weapon for attacking NOT armored targets... and mechs ain't that.Have them fire sabots/flechettes

I feel like this edition has alot of objectively bad things about it and is absolutely where the alot of worst qualities of current editions showed up. But I feel like I prefer playing this edition compared to a lot of previous editions and 10th edition. Its a weird transitional period where there's still a lot of the old units that haven't been legended yet while still having the fucking Primaris lot. Its strange but I don't feel like I'm missing out on much staying on this edition and playing with friends casually instead of going back to playing the current edition.

TTRPGs are a social game first and foremost. That means there's unspoken rules that vary from group-to-group, but a common one is "acceptable breaks from sensibility" in the name of game experience or table cohesion. It's the kind of thing that keeps the bitter rivalry between the Elf and the Dwarf largely to amusing banter and not outright PvP. It's an innate instinct: nobody likes to spoil the atmosphere, because that's a large part of the appeal of a good game (alongside the freedom). That being said, there are also times when the group's course of action is patently retarded and you can't meaningfully push back on it without feeling like you'd cause a big fight over nothing (and then feel obligated to keep comrades away from the consequences), or something a character cannot abide has to be "sanded over" somewhat, or you as the GM don't want to cultivate the feeling that you're antagonizing your players by hitting them over the head with "you murdered someone because it was convenient and didn't even take measures to cover your tracks" or whatever unhinged misadventure occurred because something about the player position of the table cause human beings to lose IQ. Have you ever had that feeling? I think I see enough greentexts to think it's common.
>>97228087Youtube farming thread lmao
>>97231000Try me, bitchfag
>>97228087Very little. I am willing to remind players that certain ideas are very, very stupid. I am also willing to let players ignore me and put their very, very stupid ideas into practice. My general rules of thumb is if the character they're playing should know better, the player should be at least aware of whatever flaws their Int/Wis/whatever brain stat allows them to understand with the aforementioned plan.If there's no good in-world way to justify an alert as to an exceedingly stupid action, I just drop an "Are you sure?", and that usually gets their paranoia going enough to reconsider, at least briefly.
>>97228087I hit my players with consequences for dumb actions that seem wildly disproportionate all the time. You argued in front of the quest giver maiden? She loses her faith in the heroes she summoned and kills herself while you aren’t watching. Tell the last living fire priestess she is worthless because she doesn’t have a tome to teach you from? She drinks until she really does become useless and her miracles are lost forever.I’ve had players who needed to be told the consequences to their plans beforehand because their characters were supposed to be smarter. Those players never learned and still performed the plans anyway, dooming themselves and ruining sessions for the rest of us again and again. It’s never worth it. Just kick them on the next character death, won’t take long.
