Why do traditional games seem to attract the most socially undesirable people? Not trolling, I seriously would like to get to the bottom of this. I don't get it, tabletop games are social in nature so why do they attract anti-social weirdos, you expect these types to stay at home and video game. Why are some games MUCH worse that other when it comes to players, ie. Warhammer 40k is worse than historical Wargames, compared MtG to Chess, etc. Is there an explanation for this phenomenon?
>>96486188Anon, I legitimately ask how old you are to not remember the satanic panic regarding so many full grown adults throwing shitfits over the idea of little timmy pretending to fight evil monsters in a board game in someone's dusty basement.Traditional games are not a cool hobby. Until recent year, very few conventionally cool people will admit to it. So you're going to get social reprobates. The guys that don't have anywhere else to go or get pushed out of every space, whether because they deserve or they don't. It's that simple.P.S. look for something called "The Five Geek Social Fallacies"

>>96477508I fucking hate playoids taking classes with pets/companions/sentient swords and expecting the already overworked DM to cater to them perfectly at their every whim, and then fucking complaining you're "doing it wrong" out some crap like that
>>96480681I like to think his wives were responsible for each of those threats and he was dating a foreign warlord, a mafia boss, and a lich all at the same time.

>>96484685I agree, but what does this have to do with who you're replying to?
>>96476838I once played a husband and wife in parallel campaigns. It was in a sort of Westmarch style campaign where multiple DMs were running campaigns in the same world for different groups on different days of the week. You were allowed to attend multiple games and you could either play different characters or the same one. There was an explicit "We're not gonna worry about it too much" policy for how a single character could be in totally different regions in the same time period. There were only a couple of us who attended multiple games per week anyway. One guy attended literally every game in the week and was accumulating too much wealth and loot, so the DMs had to clamp down and limit everyone to 2 sessions per week maximum. It didn't actually affect anyone but him, since the rest of us only did two games. But I digress. I was playing a pair of clerics who were childhood friends who parted ways when they joined the priesthood, but promised to reunite once they felt the time was right. The guy was a stern, judgmental sort who ended up being the moral compass of the party because everyone else in that group (besides all days guy) was very soft. The girl was similarly judgmental, but much more fervent and anxious about it. She was less in control of the party than the guy, partially because they were more wilful and I didn't want to impose. All days guy had fun playing around with knowing both characters. The final session of the campaign was a joint session with mixed parties, so I ended up playing the two of them as a single character. They were functionally similar enough in build that I wasn't losing any vital abilities.

>>9644964840K player here. This is a compfag. Now competitive gaming is something like the Black Rage, but for players. It is a degenerative behavioral condition that eventually results in what you see in many pict-captures in this board of discource. It is hallmarked by many behaviors such as a hatred of irregular scenery, kitbashed models, non GW plastic (as these are hallmarks of unfamiliar irregularities or the world they shun), even or symmetrical arrangements of regular L-shaped terrain on the board, unpainted or even unassembled armies, obsessive meta-chasing, degrading emotional stability, bodily hygiene, weight gain and exponentially increasing tendencies to subterfuge and cheating, much of which will have been meticulously planned out to estimate how much they're risking to get away with every cheat, and what excuses they may be able to sell.In reality, any balanced wargamer knows that any subject under GW design, save perhaps for small model count games, is average at best for competitive play experience. Yet due to the brain rot of this condition, these Compfags will fail to identify the cure to their own condition. Because they cannot fathom the idea of narrative play, or having fun with games anymore.
>>96486042Games like starcraft brood war have been the same for almost 2 decades now. And the meta is constantly evolving and no one that plays casually or professionally would say the game is balanced. You can at best mitigate the bullshit with how the maps are made and even then the map makers try to make maps that do not look like ass.One would think that game that got released about the same time as StarCraft would have accumulated enough terrain pieces to avoid the abominations of bland L shape terrains. But balance between just 3 different armies that are slightly different is almost impossible due to the fact people have wildly different levels of skills and understanding of the game. Trying to balance the cluster fuck that is 40k at an army level is just retarded. Specially when you are changing "Engine" of the game every year or so.Closest thing GW manage to actually to balance this game was 4th, that was basically 3rd with all the FAQ, Erratas and experimental shit added on.
8th edition effectively killed this setting and franchise. The setting progression destroyed it all man. How would we fix Warhammer?Arch was right Outercircle was right Gamza was right
>>96479634>when?right now, round ear
>>96479215Yeah... bout that
>>96479108Why is Harry Potter still popular despite being problematic?Maybe it's because all the unwanted stuff is tacked on and everything everyone wants is still there, despite the problems, else it would be abandoned? There's also no other setting. Which isn't surprising, as Warhammer is a pick & mix of all settings, built on decades of Sci-Fi and its own writing, the bad writing casually forgotten.
>>9648339140yo aussie here41 next weekPeople who only play warhammer are weirdPeople over 35 who don't /hwg/ are chomos
>>96479099I mean I'm just into the hobby and lore and in that area its not that difficult to just consider all the 8th edition stuff not canon. A tonne of my space marines are "Primaris" because actually the nearest forge world only has the blueprint for a variant of the Mk4 helmet, which looks like a Primaris helmet. The differences between the body armour are not drastic enough to bother me. Even my captain in Gravis armour is actually just in rare artificer armour. I avoid any hover tanks or the goofy primaris units. A Redemptor can just be a variant of a normal dreadnought. Assault intercessors are just tactical marines with a close combat loadout. Jump Pack intercessors are just assault marines. I bought a predator tank instead of one of the standard floating ones(bit small but not enough to bother me) along with using the Spartan from the age of darkness box. And so onMixing in HH marines also obviously works. I have a tonne of Mark 6 marines and a contemptor and stuff because the chapter is a second founding Raven Guard successor(kind of).Even if I was to play the game I could generally contrive passable explanations for whatever stuff I don't like the opponent is running. They're running a bunch of primaris goofiness I don't care for, well they're renegade tech heretics my loyalist guys are fighting. Then if you're collecting almost anything but marines your range is fine and does not necessarily reflect 8th edition lore. Even armies that completely came out since 8th edition are generally totally compatible with the older lore. Death Guard, World Eaters, Genestealer cults, Emperors Children, the chaos space marine refresh, Mechanicum, they're stupid expensive but the actual models are perfectly in line with pre 8th edition lore.

>>96484848Funny, because it's consistently been the trans players that have consistently caused the most nuclear trouble for all of my groups
>>96485673Same. Every major problem in the past 7 or so years that has happened in my play groups, all my play groups mind you not just rpgs, has been caused by a trans person save for 1 event. There are two that are banned from a couple stores because of the drama they caused, one group imploded from another, one tried to start shit saying people at one store were transphobic and then never showed up when people invited them directly to play, ect. Every time I search for a cool "barbarian" in some RPG, no matter if it's dark fantasy or not, it's always the half-naked dude or chick that looks like he / she has just wake up after an university party. It gives the same vibes that you get from watching an historical film and for some reason, the filmmakers hate natural colors and must put a filter that ruins your immersion. Is it there a good RPG with proper "barbarians"?
>>96461497Conan didn't have a berserker rage, although there's perhaps a case that Kull of Atlantis did, and it's a nice passage in one of the Kull stories where Kull's gone berserk and Brule's fighting at his side, protecting Kull from the worst attacks as they both kill snake men.I think it's okay to give the rage to barbarians.
>>96463125>Why would the romans feel the need to make the Germanic mercenaries fighting for their own side look more heroic? For the same reason Julius Caesar fought increasingly more badass barbarians every year of his campaign: because it made the Romans look better when they defeated them. The more formidable the opponent the Romans defeated, the greater the glory in the victory. Do you think the people commissioning the artists told them: "hey, don't make the barbarians look too good, okay? I want to look like I was fighting a weak, impotent foe!!!"?

Which game is currently in a worse state?
>>96472002>them raceswapping well established and beloved characters for no apparent reason other than good boy points>he doesn't knowOh, anon, it's simultaneously funnier and more depressing than you think. That decision didn't originate with WotC--the Tolkien estate specifically REQUIRED that character depictions be as distinct as possible from their appearances in the movies and actively approved the race swaps. Not for good boy points, not for reasons of artistic integrity, but because the estate was chafing at having to share royalties and licensing fees when everyone always wants to evoke the movies. The Magic set seemed like a sizeable enough release that people wouldn't be able to avoid noticing it, which made it the perfect vehicle for the estate to begin muddying the waters on what characters look like in order to free their own hands for future licensing deals.
>>96484408Jesus christ. That explains a lot actually. Like making Gandalf "fabulous" in that shitty hobbit game.
>>96484373Oh, of course Tolkien *intended* Aragorn—along with every other significant character—to be white, and of course if MtG wanted art that made even a pretense of capturing what the world Tolkien meant to create might have looked like, they would've just gotten John Howe to do it. But I do find it amusing to consider what's consistent with the letter of the text, rather than the spirit.I do think, though, that the MtG Aragorn's race is at most the fourth-most annoying thing about his depiction from a purist's perspective, after (1) the fact that the White Tree of Gondor on his tunic is gold, (2) his retarded crown, and (3) the fact that he's referred to in his capacity as King as "Aragorn" rather than "Elessar" (and then as the king only of Gondor, rather than of Gondor and Arnor, or of the Reunited Kingdom). But it's worth noting that idiotic depictions of the Fellowship are nothing new; the MtG Aragorn is only *somewhat* worse than the supposedly "classic" Hildebrand one, who looks like he should be in a cheesy Hollywood adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
