Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade Gygaxian D&D, its various modern clones, and content created specifically for use with this. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade (74-83) — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread, feel free to check them out for answers:

>the first edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is very close to an OSR game focusing on the low levels, and can easily be played in this style if that's your speed
While that's true enough, this is maybe not good advice. OSR games are tightly bound to mechanics as well as tone, if you mess up on the mechanics you get a very different game.

If you're not playing with xp-for-gold, turn-based dungeon exploration, resource tracking, some kind of basic encumbrance system, reaction rolls, and morale rules, you're not really playing OSR. (Except by the reddit definition, where any game that has a dungeon and maybe a PC will die counts as "OSR")

You can theoretically bolt those rules onto any system, though some systems will handle the modification well and others will fight you every step of the way. *cough*5e*cough* However, doing that is really something I'd only recommend to experienced DMs who have played with these rules and know how they shape the game and drive players to act, which would give them the insight to recreate them in a way that suits whatever other system they're using.

B/X is like 60 pages, and was designed to teach 10+ year olds how to run D&D, it's dead simple and really solid, I'd recommend reading that first. It's about as easy as it gets.
>>
>>96856320
>I was far too focused on trying to write a good story
Oh yeah, classic mistake. Even the WHFRP adventures fall into this trap; people like the Enemy Within campaign, but there's no getting around it being a railroad.
>>
>>96856342
>OSR games are tightly bound to mechanics as well as tone, if you mess up on the mechanics you get a very different game.
Sure, I said close, not that it was an OSR game. But for example, of your list of mechanics WHFRP 1e only really lacks the gold for XP, which is pretty easy to bolt on.

>However, doing that is really something I'd only recommend to experienced DMs who have played with these rules and know how they shape the game and drive players to act
I think this is the real crux of disagreement. I think WHFRP is close *enough* that for a dedicated Warhammer enthusiast, it's a sensible recommendation. The general can easily explain to him what modifications he'd need to make and how it differs from D&D long-term (most notably in the strongly capped PC advancement). I wouldn't go around suggesting it as the all-purpose first port of call for newbies either, but you've got to be flexible with respect to the specific person's tastes, especially when they're relatively easy to accomodate.

>B/X is like 60 pages
You probably mean Moldvay Basic alone. That's 64 pages. Expert is another 64.

Another alternative to the fusion of the OSE versions, except its SRD, is to figure out the best version of the B/X Omnibus and propagate a Lulu link for it.

>what is curseborne?
Curseborne is the newest Onyx Path Publishing TTRPG on dark urban fantasy genre. It's about being unapologetic monsters in a world where being monstrous is the least of your worries. In Curseborne, you play as Accursed, descendants of monstrous Lineages lurking in a modern world that closely resembles our own. You rebel against the ancient feuds between these entwined families, as well as against the web of curses that bind you, while fending off inhuman antagonists seeking to claim — or reclaim — your power.

How do you even prep for a one-shot where you're mostly just expected to be scared and/or die? I'm already bewaring I'm in for a scaring.

Is there a way to help get into the "mood"? I'm betting the candlelight is gonna help, but I still can't shake the feeling of being in line for a really cheap haunted house.

10 candles is just Dread without jenga.
It's just working together to tell a scary story. Read scary stories so you can contribute, like Clive Barker's Books of Blood. Or work your own real fears into it if you're not afraid of some potential trauma. I played Dread/10 Candles around Halloween a bunch of times. Mostly what I remember of them is that the games make girls really horny.
I don't get it but I'm totally fine with it.

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

I was half joking, but Solars really ended up too constrained because of the Solaroids.

The writers wrote them as foils at character level, instead of splat level.

In general it is easier to keep them separated to their own kind.

Alpha strikes are an intended outcome.

>What about having resists so high that nothing can really hurt you?
No.

>What about being able to craft so awesomely that you totally disrupt the local economy?
No.

You're describing natural interpretations and extrapolation of the system and the world it's made to represent. Some of them I would disagree with the implementation of, but they aren't game-breaking exploits ripe for abuse.

>I have to be real, 1000 mortals does seem like it'd be a battlegroup.
I was talking about the fact you can put 1000 Dragonblood in a battlegroup, losing all their charms and replacing them with Might 3, meaning that a chargen Dragonblood can reliably solo their own Great House, and that a single QC shikari is stronger than a hundred QC shikari. I wasn't talking about mortals.

So I recently got roped into running a Stargate RPG for my group. We decided to go with the 2003 version as opposed to the modern Phoenix Base version with the !NotNox who are fine with killing people.

Sadly this system was killed off with a splatbook finished but unpublished. So I'm taking a wild swing here, but does anyone here happen to have the Season 3 Splatbook? There are also a number of fanworks (maps, tools, etc) that I found via the waybackmachine, but a lot of the homebrew and even errata seems totally lost to me. From the dead ruins of the Alderac forums, it seems people had even made a map of the entire Cheyenne Mountain complex.

So, /tg/, do you have any old Stargate RPG materials to share? Any campaign stories or house rules or pieces of advice? Should my group just switch to the new version? And does anyone have any ideas for Goa'uld vehicles? One of the cancelled games apparently had a hover tank but thats all I can find.

If the free Jeffa could steal space pyramids then why couldn't the SGC?
>>
>>96854080
They stole one, but otherwise they kinda suck for their size and probably expensive to operate.
>>
>>96854105
I mean even as a space station they'd be invaluable. Probably could adapt Starfighters and test them quicker from there as well.
>>
>>96854105
I always found it amusing how back in season 1 the pyramid ships were THE holy shit big boys on the block. By the end of the series they were practically jokes, outsized by shit like the Ori ships, and easily BTFO. Of course the human battleships were still smaller, but thanks to being pimped out with Asgard shit (engines, shields, transporters, and eventually plasma beam weapon) they typically weren't much of a threat unless the human ship was already badly damaged, say, by the Ori. It became like comic book levels of powerwanking. Based on the size difference between them and human ships, the Wraith vessels would have also been far larger and likely easily a match if not far superior.

Something else I find amusing is that by the end of the series they had so much Goa'uld crap that they were willing to let Vala Sun's father run off with a shuttle equipped with a damn Tokra cloaking device! Of course by that time the System Lords were reduced to a comical number of Ba'al clones.

Speaking of comparing Atlantis to SG1, I always felt it was a shame that they didn't have more interaction between the Wraith and Goa'uld/Jaffa, between the latter's long lives and strong regenerative ability, not to mention shit like the sarcophagus tech. Or cloning, for that matter. Dumbass Wraiths get their hands on a ZPM and they just clone more of themselves even though food was already a problem. They should have been trying to make human cloning farms instead. Hell, the SGC could have contributed. Ethical food supply for the wraith, just clone some humans but leave out vital parts of the brain so it would never be a true thinking being. I guess the Goa'uld aren't much brighter. When one took over Assistant Director Walter Skinner the best it could come up with was blow up Atlantis. I'm disappointed they didn't try to take one over as a host. Stronger than humans, able to feed off of them, mind control powers. Better than an Unas.
>>
>>96851319
It isn't lethal to where extra sheets are necessary unless you aim to fuck them over. But you will want to go easy on them if they don't know the system, since it's easy to make a fuckup useless character build the first time. It has vitality/wound point separation, so remember that.

>>96854080
The Goa'uld started putting safety shit on their stuff when Earth started stealing it, like the fighters.

Additionally, the terms of the treaty the Asgard signed off on were that no species could be allowed to acquire technology to threaten the Goa'uld. While in exchange for Nirrti the Tau'ri were allowed to keep their Stargate and fuck about offworld, it was with the implicit understanding that their "grey zone" shit would only be tolerated up to a certain point. A ha'tak would break that unspoken rule. By the time Prometheus was coming on the scene the Goa'uld were preoccupied with Anubis and then there were Replicator problems anyway. And Prometheus quickly got given all the cool Asgard toys so it ended up better than a ha'tak.

I've printed multiple armies at this point and owned several printers. I enjoy 3d printing in most aspects but I would still rather work with GW plastic every time.

This was great, good work Yae-anon.

If you want, you can use Kohaku's father for the serial killer. His grandfather was one, and if his father took over using the same methods it would look like very old cold cases starting up again. Their lineage is Under an Evil Star, so Fukuzawa Yoshio could be in the process of being made into an Evil Star-buffed Consumed by Kiro no Kawa.

This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Fillers, Party, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.

TQs:
- What is your most immersive game?
- Who's your board game waifu?
- Favorite faction gimmick?

I'm looking to reduce my collection size from 68 to 60, ultimately down to 50 in due time. For now, I need to cull my small boxed games from 18 to 10.

The ones on the left are the ones I'm considering keeping (7 Yokai is Yokai Septet), while the ones on the right are to be culled. There have been some difficult choices, but I'm not really not sure what I could rotate out from the left side for some of the right side games.

As best I can recall, Bohnanza is a box of air. Make a smaller box for the cards. Or throw the cards in a photo keeper if that's too much work.

I ran a game of High Society with (non-gamer) friends at church and we had a riotously good time.
That's the only game I recognize from your cull pile.
