Okay, I'm done. I'm done with DnD. Discord retards broke me. But I still want my fix of the knight and elf game. What other, presumably better systems do you guys use for the vaguely medieval fantasy games?Hard mode: No GURPS. I love it but my players are paste eaters. Which would make them perfect GURPS players of course but it also means they don't wanna even try.

>>96589613I'd put Earthdawn at upper medium crunch. It is VERY bound to its setting, mostly from a metaphysics standpoint. It goes into depth on how magic works and how it interplays with Disciplines (the system's classes all of which are explicitly magical, even the "martials"), magic items, and so on. The metaplot can be ignored beyond the initial set-up, and like most games with a metaplot it should be ignored beyond mining for ideas.
>>96590028Palladium Fantasy is just Kevin Siembeida's AD&D 1e house rules and is mediocre at best. If you are going to play a Palladium game get TMNT and Other Strangeness, it is the best his company has ever produced.

>>96588124You can play with every model as an individual character, it's lots of fun. But you can also have small regiments of a dozen or so guys fighting alongside the individuals if you roll a large enough warband. There are advantages and drawbacks to each; a regiment will be better able to seize and maintain the advantage in combat because of their rank bonus (which requires at least 8 models in two ranks of four) but individual models will be more maneuverable and won't be affected by difficult terrain.
What do you think could be THE sport in a scifi space game? I believe that spacefaring civilizations should have their futuristic equivalent of soccer, a sport spread everywhere that can be played in a small scale among kids as much as absurdly huge events with tons of money exchanging hands. It should be in zero-g to make it feel space-y and it should be complex to the point people in the outside don't get what's going on.But I don't really have a picture of what it could be like. I've toyed with having sport stars at a station or a big match interupting time sensitive discussions, but I always fear players actually wanting to join in even though that'd be great. Whatever system is fine, I'm interested even if it's not gonna be something I could insert 1 to 1. Purely conceptual ideas are fine too.
>>96589850It would be much easier to relegate your idea to fantasy, because spacefaring beyond our moon treads far into improbability, according to the current applications of the systematic study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. And even trips to the moon take an unrealistically unsustainable cost of time and resources, with high risks involved with not just the launch, but the transit itself.I'm sure you could look into theoretical fuel sources that are plausible and haven't been disproven yet if you want to keep things scientific, but if you want to focus more on fun, just make it fantasy and don't worry so much about plausibility.
>>96590613Star wars version would be cooler though. We have to find a bunch of goofy aliens first however.
Maybe this is more cyberpunk than strictly sci fi, but I remember watching some kind of show where people had the ability to upload their consciousness to a hard disc located in the person's neck and you could switch between bodies at will as long as you had the resources to do so. One of the effects of this was that you could have combat sports that were essentially to death, so long as the disk remained undamaged. I feel like that could be interesting as errata and as something the players could get involved with or in.
>>96590746fuck, skate+sport is a really good one, but maybe more for a cyberpunk game.
>>96590811that's secondary, there are already space settings. The question is about sports played in those already existing settings.>>96590820Isn't podracing just nascar with PvP?Fun, but not really special.

playing 5e and on the 3rd session at level 5 each they have encountered the BBEG and now plan to booby trap his lair with alchemical fire and engage him in combat. They say they just want to talk to him, but they are specifically planning to light his lair on fire BEFORE attempting to engage with him in conversation or anything. The players have encountered this guy before, they should know he's an extremely formidable enemy. When they first met him, he had cast meteor swarm and earthquake in the same turn, reducing an entire village to rubble.I don't want to straight up tell my players "he shrugs off the alchemical fire" because he is immune to fire damage, and I don't want to say "well he casts 2 spells this round and kills everyone"Though despite this, I still do want to stick to rules as written as closely as possible. They know what they are going into when engaging this guy.My question is, what should I do? most retarded redditors just say "well let them do it and see how it goes!" somehow implying my players will get a kick out of getting TPK'd almost instantly by an end game boss at level 5, on their 3rd session.Theres always the route where he gives them a villainous monologue after "evading" the trap they laid, but i feel like that just is basically the same thing as saying "well your trap was pointless" sort of discouraging them to try something like that again. Should I just make him send some weaker villains in his place so they can enjoy a real fight? the problem is the BBEG explicitly stated he will be meeting them again at this location, so if he doesn't show after my players spent a couple hours planning exactly how this trap would work I feel like they may be dissappointed once they realize the BBEG won't be the one taking it.
Have the BBEG send an "advance guard" that falls for the trap and gets absolutely slaughtered. After the fight is over send in the BBEG who will be suitably dispassionate/impressed/amused (as appropriate). My thought process is it rewards the players with a trivial fight (make sure the advance guard has good loot) and also demonstrates that the BBEG is competent enough to send people to preview an area. But also cold enough to not care about their death.
>>96590980yeah this does seem like the best solution. initially i thought my players would feel like i'm being a sissy DM that doesn't want his "special boys" killed in combat, but im probably looking to deeply into it. they are gonna have fun as long as shit gets blown up.
I've really been enjoying reading through Runequest, so I don't understand why it seems so underrated in modern gaming. There doesn't really seem to be much interest in the current edition compared to early ones.I was hoping that there could be more excitement over its potential.Especially with the changes coming.
>>96474663How is the basic roleplaying universal game engine? Is it actually good and lives up to it’s name? And how is it compared to 5th edition?
RQG sucks and Glorantha sucks when played outside of HeroQuest because the lore is incompatible with the rules. I like Mythras a lot but TDM doesn't seem to care about vanilla Mythras at all, only Mythic Earth and Classic Fantasy. And at some point they errattad the rules so point buy is only 75 points which is extremely crippling to most character concepts. And doubly odd because again they love pushing Classic Fantasy where you get 91 points which is way too many. Very odd decisions.>>96590765Suffers from Call of Cthulhu syndrome where a bunch of the numbers don't do anything, and it uses the old confusing version of Initiative. I would just use Mythras with the magic systems stripped out for a generic d100 system.
>>96590977Is it still worth learning if one wants to move out of the 5th edition dungeon?
>>96474663Grognards are only interested in lore discussion and prefer to buy JC stuff on drivethrurpg instead of official rehashed material from 30 years ago with slightly better art.
>>96498118Or you can just use the 2e Stormbringer rules to run combat.

There was a certain class of games, particularly for (Old|New) World of Darkness before they renamed it to CofD, that were really popular. Basically you would fill out your sheet as a starting character, then go before a Storyteller/GM that was like a DMV bureaucrat, who would verify that you made legal choices and would sometimes argue with you about if you need Firearms 3.Then you'd be let in to the actual game. You'd have semi-freeform "scenes" with other PCs who did the same process, and occasionally, the ST/GM would show up and do a "scene" where the chips are really on the table, you can make real moves. You'd do XP requests and get standard XP quantities based on activity, basically attendance. But then they kinda just disappeared in the late 2000s/early 2010s, right before the rename to CofD. I think there were games of similar structure for other RPGs, but (o|n)WoD was the big one. What happened, man? Why did they fall out of style?

>>965902491e Sidereals didn't have that so much as they had the power to hope they could slip by and not get killed by a Lunar if found out. Quoth the book, "Mistreating the character is mechanically easy but emotionally difficult." Also, a Lunar who does know better is completely unaffected.
>>>Man, you Eclipse players sure are spoiled. You get to sanctify oaths, you get diplomatic immunity, AND you can learn just about any kind of Charm there is. And you're bitching about not being able to learn literally any Charm.<<<>You'll notice how the developer seems strangely deaf to their complaints. =)>Much Lunar magic is linked with their inherent power of changing shape. You could learn the Charms, but you couldn't use them, because you're not a Lunar. You're also not going to be able to learn Void-circle necromancy or Sidereal astrology. If you want to beat your game to death with a stick, hey, you all know the Golden Rule. However, I think the reason why those Charms are barred is terribly obvious -- it would unbalance things and it doesn't mesh with the unique nature of Lunars in the setting. If you don't like it, you can change it, but don't come running to the Forum about how broken the Eclipse Caste power is. =)>>96590879Yes, was it explained from where Eclipse's charmshare came from? Dungeon World 2 released another version for public playtesting a few days ago: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Hp3f8laeI1bf-pRrwD9nXqkRxZAbB_PNWhat do you think of it?I am personally somewhat disappointed. The original playtest was actually trying to do something new with its subsystem for Defiances, its abstracted armor, and its lack of traditional damage and HP. The new version instead brings back Defy Danger (albeit locked into Constitution, despite being a catch-all move), concretely defined armor, and rolled damage and HP. I think that the new version is making too many concessions towards familiarity and D&D-ness.
>>96582367Sup 2hu.Not sure what your problem is with it. Not griddy enough for you?
>>96585126Apparently, according to the discussion over on the Big Purple, both versions are valid. It's a double playtest sort of situation. They want to see which version players prefer.Personally, I prefer the first option. The less D&D the better. If I wanted D&D, I'd play D&D.
>>96590356Dungeon World itself has too much D&D in its DNA to ever truly be divorced from it. The point system turned out to be mostly unused and keeping Forcyz at a holographic distance helped. I had some problems getting the Inquisitor into things without him beating the players over the head with his rosette until they decided that they could squeeze an inquisitor on port wander with the information of what they've done in Modren's defeat. I wish them the best of luck on that one. It was actually a lot quicker than I thought it'd be - we plowed through it over the weekend. Their big reward was a dune knockoff planet to settle, but they've already got a station and colony so we'll see how that runs - or if they bother at all.
