Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>96767579This general, and by extension this board, is besieged by a small group of trolls. They love acks, hate 2e, and say anyone that dislikes acks or likes 2e is all one person. Even if you like both acks and 2e or hate both, you will be called their boogeyman. They used to get banned for throwing tantrums, but they would just immediately ban evade, and then post how the janitor/mods that banned them were also the boogeyman. If you're genuinely curious, don't bother pretending that you actually listened to a word the trolls have told you, because it puts severe doubts on you yourself. 2e is not too far away from 1e. It's roughly 99% identical. The trolls' major grievance over it is that it was made after Gygax was kicked out of TSR.
>>96767579Now that he's given you a reply, notice that he doesn't actually respond to your question but instead gave a cut and paste answer that's completely irrelevant to what you said. He's our resident shithead who won't fuck off out the thread, claims to love 2e, hates ACKS, uses the same words over and over.We call him Fishfag. He's here for the express purpose of shitting things up and making the threads worst for everyone else. There's really not much else to say about the situation except the Jannies won't ban him for some reason but will ban/delete anyone proving him wrong or arguing with him. So he uses that to bait people and get them banned.Because he's a cunt.

I'm trying to make a campaign where the party is taking a sea route around the east coast from Alethkar to the Reshi Isles (pic related), and I'm trying to come up with stuff to fill in the gaps of travel time and the different visited locations. I was reading through first steps and skimmed through the stonewalkers campaign. It's so upsetting how many loose threads there are. The first steps is an optional level 0 module that helps you make a character through a session zero, while giving you a plot hook for the stonewalkers campaign. But it also gives you plot hooks that ARENT related to the stonewalkers campaign and you have to tell your players that btw you shouldn't pursue this lead unless you want me to prepare brand new material not covered by the campaign, or skip the campaign altogether.> You're being attacked by bandits, but if you investigate, you'll find that they bear their armor is alethi. You find out the patron of the caravan is in on the attack! What an intriguing moment!Stonewalkers does not expand on this >In the middle of the night a shardbearer(plate and weapon) causes massive problems. You cant possibly fight back, if you try anyway, you are so inconsequential that he brushes you away before he leaves, leaving devastation in his wakeThis man does not appear in the module despite being proper revenge bait.>Now you're being attacked by wild animals. Save this shin guy! You've saved the shin, now get ready for an adventure where he is the plot hook. Ignore all the previous ones please.Go to stonewalkers module:>Oh you're going to the land of the people who attacked your caravan. Neat huh? No new plot developments there though.>You find a shardbearer! It's not the one who attacked you though. It is instead someone who plays a significant role in the books who has both meta reasons and in game reasons for you to want to kill him before his time and break canonit's amaram, and he doesn't have shardplateI have to edit both things heavily if I want to get something that isn't immediately derailed in multiple directions
>>96767508Those loose ends are definitely annoying, but at the very least I managed to tie up the caravan plot pretty easily with one Conversation with Ralanat where she tried to counteract the allegations
I have been interested in oozes/slimes as of late. They appear as a monster type in D&D, Path/Starfinder, 13th Age, Draw Steel (in the starter adventure and Patreon bonus content), and Daggerheart, among other games.Exotic and high-level ooze monsters include living spells in D&D; teratomorphs in D&D 3.0; astral renders in D&D 4e; blobs of annihilation in D&D 5e; mezlans, immortal ichors, and blights in Pathfinder; riftcreepers and oblivions in Pathfinder 1e; living apocalypses and cerebrexes in Starfinder 1e; and gray goos and plasma oozes in Path/Starfinder 1e. Shoggoths could count as oozes, and they appear as such in Pathfinder 1e.Named ooze antagonists include Juiblex, Ghaunadaur, and Turaglas in D&D; the daelkyr Kyrzin in Eberron; the Voidharrow in D&D 4e; and Vorgozen and the suspiciously named Jubilex in Pathfinder 1e.There are ooze-themed PC options every now and then, such as the oozemaster and slime lord prestige classes in D&D 3.X, the ooze master theme in D&D 4e, the plasmoid species in D&D 5e, the alchemist (oozemaster) and shifter (oozemorph) archetypes in Pathfinder 1e, the Oozemorph archetype in Pathfinder 2e, and the entu colony and selamid races in Starfinder 1e. I observed that an ooze race was popular in third-party Pathfinder 1e material, such as Alluria Publishing's squole and Dreamscarred Press's atstreidi and coreid; I once played alongside someone playing a coreid psionicist at 17th level. The only dedicated ooze-themed adventure I know of is The Slithering in Pathfinder 2e. I believe it was poorly received, as its mechanics were questionable and frustrating: particularly the focus on oozes and incorporeals, whose precision damage immunity is unfun for several classes. While it is common to see demons, devils, dragons, or undead as campaign-wide enemies, it is much rarer to see oozes in such a role. Perhaps intelligent oozes could be portrayed similarly to the Klyntar? What are your favorite portrayals of oozes in tabletop RPGs?
>>96763983Indeed overusing them can cause trust issues.I also like mimics.A fun fact is that they have a rather intelligent variant. They can also get very, very big.
>>96766181>A fun fact is that they have a rather intelligent variant.[desire to know more intensifies]What system, and how intelligent? Also, what, uh… race, I guess, if that makes sense?I mean, how the hell DO you play as a mimic in, I'm assuming, a mixed race party?I can picture pranking the everloving fuck out of the party, but what about the actual adventure?Do they just… lug it around like a regular chest, or does it grow legs?
>>96766445NTA but I know in PF1e they have 10 Int, and are aberrations with an innate belief they will one day become humans. Those which attempt to fo so however find the limitations of their mimicry (objects only) leave them turned into a Thing style jumble of limbs, organs and teeth, an experience that drives them mad with grief and anger, their utterly alien and inhuman nature no longer deniable, resulting in a Failed-Apotheosis Mimic.I once played a mimic PC who didn't really knowehatwas up with the stories about "trying to become human before your time" but decided it was safer to just copy statues and eventually get an amulet of Alter Self.
>>96597710We had a PC over several campaigns who first turned into a slime and then got progressively larger and more dangerous, until she couldn't function as a PC anymore, and now is a existential setting-threat. Good stuff!
>>96767160I would've thought something like life-sized dolls, ball-in-socket mannequins, and so on.Is it a Thing-type? It is. Can you "carve" a likeness of a human into it? You sure can.Failure of imagination on their part, a successful limitation bypass on yours. Nice job anon. Also, what's it like playing a mimic anyway? How did it go about it's day, I mean?I'm struggling to imagine anything that *isn't* a many-legged trunk with yawning maw like in the pic above.I'm used to the idea of mimics being ambush hunters, sitting in one spot until some hapless fool falls for their camouflage.…that doesn't sound thrilling when it's your PC and it's not a timeskip style of playing that feels akin to fishing.

CB already said they were going to be bringing back sectorials and fixing old armies. They made that clear the instant that they confirmed that they were stripping the number of sectorials back for the launch of N5. These were not surprise releases, nor were they sudden pivots and capitulations to a riotous customer base; the sectorials are old and no one played them, so updating them to N5 was low priority, but their reintroduction has been the plan since day one. You can find blog posts and videos from before N5 launched stating as much. But the average 4channer has the memory of a goldfish and a love of contrived drama, so of course the narrative instead become "CB is dying (for real this time, not like the other 18 times people said this was happening)! This new combined chess championship seems interesting, though I fear that it might start supplanting the actual championship. The idea does stoke a (quite unrealistic) idea I've had for some time: a tournament where several chess-like games (either variants or even other nation's traditional versions, like shogi). Obviously the logistics of this would be nightmarish, and probably involve picking and counterpicking different games in a match (which would require players to play sets rather than single games all the time).
If you can't describe your character without mentioning their race/class, you're not playing a character. And that's okay, but it's good to be aware of

>>96766499So, within the universe, people rarely know what is being cast. To truly figure out what's being cast, you need to recall knowledge as the spell is being cast in the moment. When someone casts a Spell, they don't say>Warlock: "ELDRTICH BLAST!!"They most likely say>Warlock: "Tdll'hc Ebi'ctab-rs!"Which means nothing to 99% of people, then the spell itself happens. And the spell itself can then look completely different for each spell caster, one could be a magical blast of flame like force another could look like ribbons, while another could like swords and axes. This gets worse when you factor in that not everyone casts 'spells'. Some creatures can make attacks that could look similar to certain spells. All's to say, magic is so personalized that it borders on impossible to know exactly where the origin point of the magic comes from without explicitly knowing the vast types of spellcasters in the world. And even then, you could still make a mistake just because the effect you're examining looks similar to something else. >wouldn't any knowledgeable mage be able to see an Eldritch Blast being cast and instantly be able to tell that "hey, that person must've made a pact with some kind of being" or something like that?In 5e D&D the best case you could get for this- would be having a really high Arcana skill stat, taking a Reaction to identify the spell being cast in the moment (Note it must have components that you can see), then you can determine what it is on a success, from there if your character is aware that the Eldrtich Blast spell could only be obtained from a Pact. Then yes, but if they don't know that then they won't!
>>96766499the differentiating dimension for the relationship between mechanics and in-universe logic isnt just the setting, but also the DM/table style of game. you could have a FR game where mechanics are very close to the narrative and another where they are abstracted awaythe official material itself vacillates between this, so there is no clear RAW for this (and it would be of very little use anyway, since it's entirely up to the DM). We're not in older versions where everyone who ever steals anything needs levels in rogue-thiefone big thing of note is for warlocks specifically, almost all spells are named after something fiendish or great one stuff. It's almost impossible to build a warlock without taking one of those, so the fact that there are many official warlock subclasses that do not have that flavor seems to imply or necessitate that the name of a spell can be (when needed) just a mechanical thing - although some of them are harder to reflavor than others. A marid warlock casting armor of agathys can be easily reflavored, a divine one not so much. Im sure someone will throw in "the good entity teaches you evil named spells because fighting evil with evil blabla" but that is more like trying to squeeze some unsatisfying logic to avoid abstracting things away. So there has to be some implicit expectation that mechanics are not always a in-universe reality. But as always with 5e, they leave most things vague
Do you prefer to play ugly characters? Or attractive characters?

>>96767311>Brawny types are rarely strategicI think Kaoru just took a look at Fumiko's chest and forgot everything else about her. Due to how Fumiko interacts with people, she may give an aloof and mindless air, but she is probably the second smartest member of the Fujiwara-Senki, and one of the most self-conscious and aware. It will be nice when Kaoru discovers that side of Fumiko.
>>96767455Would be cool. Keep in mind that Kaoru has limited information about the Fujiwara Senki in particular and only speculates that they act together at all, so she’s bound to get things wrong because it’d be no fun if she knew everything about everyone right off the bat. Also, with that “brawny types are rarely strategic remark” Kaoru meant that someone can be strong AND smart, but most athletic types are irritable or too violent to think during fights. Also, she has seen very few people’s Idolons for her to include them in her contingency plans, so she has no idea about the Mugendramon at Fumiko’s side. Damn, I didn’t know you knew ball with that one, anon.
>>96767487>o she’s bound to get things wrong because it’d be no fun if she knew everything about everyone right off the bat.I know, it is more or less why I said that Kaoru looked at her chest, and stopped any further line of thought to just screech with confirmation bias.

>>96767400Oh FUCK I was wondering if it was a joke or not, I kinda just needed a Fujiwara-related incident to tie Dawn to the Fujiwara Senki. If you’d like to supply an alternative, I’d happily patch it. By all means, Kaoru is just speculating. There’s a person that talked to Momofuku that one time, she seems to be into computers, there’s a hacker that works within the area, maybe they’re related? Kaoru doesn’t have the evidence to 100% tie them together, similar situation to Momofuu-ki.
