Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>96767579This general, and by extension this board, is besieged by a small group of trolls. They love acks, hate 2e, and say anyone that dislikes acks or likes 2e is all one person. Even if you like both acks and 2e or hate both, you will be called their boogeyman. They used to get banned for throwing tantrums, but they would just immediately ban evade, and then post how the janitor/mods that banned them were also the boogeyman. If you're genuinely curious, don't bother pretending that you actually listened to a word the trolls have told you, because it puts severe doubts on you yourself. 2e is not too far away from 1e. It's roughly 99% identical. The trolls' major grievance over it is that it was made after Gygax was kicked out of TSR.
Honestly I'm tired of muh eldritch cults and the lovecraftian mythos in horror. No one is genuinely scared or creeped out by them. People may gloat about how much of an intellectual idea cosmic horror is; being overwhelmed by the vastness of the universe and feeling powerless, blah blah blah.Satanic cabals, witch covens and pagan cults do give people the creeps. Voodoo dolls, human sacrifices, blood rituals, hidden groves with celtic ruins, secret societies, actual ghosts and demons instead of otherworldly beings who don't give a shit about mankind. Horns and blood scare people more than tentacles and ooze.

sp, we can accept that the nsrg concept doesn't work or will we keep pushing it hoping it becomes a thing?
>>96767411I think we might have to come to terms with the fact that the ACKShills will try to kill anything they decide is a threat, even if they're just being insane.
>>96767425if anything they were keeping the thread alive./tg/ has a strong anti-nsr crowd for some reason (some of it is identitarian culture war, but I think there's a lot of random pet peeves too), I usually avoid discussing nsr here. I think that if the thread kept being around more people would go>oh, that's a thing? I'll give it a trybut as we are now you can tell when one of the 4 people interested comes and goes. And there's only so much we can discuss, if you have under 10 regular users that's at best 4 sessions a week to discuss (if there's any interest in that system).I think it's best to keep it at stand alone posts when we have something interesting to talk about. It sucks to lose the chance to bring new people to games you like, but it's not really happening here.
>>96767461No, they immediately poisoned this thread. Being the only people who can tolerate each other's presences is kind of their defining quality. Previous thread: >>96669987GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: Is Reach important or is it all about how you use it?
>>96767266>Seems like maul to neck has a 1.5x damage modifier or it does a Major Wound to the skull if a crit?A maul (crushing) always gets a *1.5 wounding modifier to the neck (note that in GURPS 'damage' is the amount of damage rolled before deducting DR, 'wounding modifier' is a multiplier applied after DR, and 'injury' is the loss of HP after applying the wounding modifier; mixing this terminology up is common, but can result in confusion). That applies regardless of whether the blow was a critical hit or not. All critical effects are in addition to normal effects. Major wounds aren't a function of critical hits either. They happen when you suffer injury over a certain threshold. So a single blow could potentially cause HP loss (injury), crippling, a major wound, a roll on the critical hit table, and even other effects like knockback. This means that taking injury can become very unpleasant very quickly, which is why most effective combat 'builds' tend to focus on not being hit rather than 'soaking up' damage.>Quick question, how to get a 12 on the critical hit table? Is it from a case like this: attacker does a weapon skill attack roll against 22 effective, and since 22 minus 10 is 12, 12 is the number to look up in the Critical Hit Table??No. The book actually does a really poor job of explaining this, but unless otherwise specified, 'rolling on a table' in GURPS means that you roll 3d and look up the result on said table.
>>96767452GURPS Stress and Derangement rules bypass that issue by having the trauma be only part of the effect, keeping the usual rolls on the fright check table. The Alien RPG has a neat system too, where having any stress at all turns mundane rolls into potential panic situations.
>>96767266>Seems like maul to neck has a 1.5x damage modifierCorrect, because a maul deals crushing damage, whatever penetrating damage gets through is multiplied by 1.5x. >or it does a Major Wound to the skull if a crit? No, a "Major Wound" is any HP loss that's greater than half a character's total HP. Which forces a stun/knockdown roll, roll vs HT or get stunned. Major wounds to the face or neck impose a penalty on this check, and a major wound to the skull an even more severe penalty. All a critical hit does by default is automatically hit a target.>Quick question, how to get a 12 on the critical hit table?Whenever you score a crit, roll 3d6 and consult the table.
>>96767463>'rolling on a table'Ah, yes, thank you, found it now, (B381)I think that was towards the end of Combat when my brain was getting fried by the overload of information intake. Due for making myself a cheat sheet on all this soon. I think I'll rule the maul to cause stun or something, but it should kind of bypass the HT roll too because how would HT keep someone from getting their head blown off by a lucky and calculated maul hit.
>>96767568>I think I'll rule the maul to cause stun or something, but it should kind of bypass the HT roll too because how would HT keep someone from getting their head blown off by a lucky and calculated maul hit. You're thinking too literally, a non-lethal blow (making the HT save) could just be abstracted as a blow that isn't solid enough to really aslpode someone's head. Plus, it's really not worth the trouble of dealing with a weapon capable of so much damage that also bypasses a core mechanic like HT saves vs death.

>>96767229Infernal charms being literally Yozi charms is just a fluff thing if you think about it. More like a thematic framing you're supposed to follow rather then anything else. You don't want Ebon Dragon charms that make people happy and spread love, that sorta thing. Letting Infernal charms be a mix of two yozis "themes" pretty much opens up infinite homebrew while allowing you to keep a really simple to understand framework. If that like, makes sense? For the Devil Tiger stuff, eh. I like it and don't like it at the same time. The fluff is fun, I like the idea of becoming something "more". The Primordials and Yozi might be chumps but at least they have really cool ass powers. Radioactive green fire is just awesome. Same with evil shadow clone no jutsus. Plus it lets you show off a homebrew exalted type, people love that shit. It's why Exigents are so cool even if the lore is a bit lacking (which I disagree with, but w/e.) It's just neat and it offered an alternative to the Reclamation stuff which I thought just had way too much focus. Also some people just really want to fuck a Yozi. It's not something explainable, they just want a Yozi waifu. Imagine that Ebussy. Basically there are a lot of reasons.>>96761838Exalted never came across to me like that. The First Age is a mystery but calling it a better age just feels wrong. It was bad enough and the solars were evil enough that the Sidereals were willing to do some crazy shit to get rid of them. And people were so tired of their shit that they helped. It's more like, a cycle? The Primordials had their age, they were evil gits and fell. Solars had their time, they were evil gits, they fell, ectect... A more technologically advanced age would be better I guess, I dunno. 2e made it a boring sci-fi setting and it was garbage so I hope 3e does better, if they ever get into real detail with it.
>>96767451>The First Age is a mystery but calling it a better age just feels wrong. It was bad enough and the solars were evil enough that the Sidereals were willing to do some crazy shit to get rid of them. They didn't start off evil and insane, you mongoloid. It was, at first a golden age. The descent of the Solars into destructive madness was a gradual process.>I hope 3e does better, if they ever get into real detail with it.They shouldn't, the First Age should remain a mythical, nigh-incomprehensible time by the standards of anyone currently living it, so the loss of its splendors hits all the harder.
