You do make your level 1 characters have appropriate backgrounds for their level right anon?

I mean, the concept applies to most games, anon. Characters start out weak and become stronger and more skilled over time, making it silly to have a huge self-indulgent background. Even shadowrun, which has the slowest progression and highest initial power level of any game I've played, doesn't really support being super powerful world-changing Uber mensch right out the gate.
>>
By keeping them appropriate for your starting level, a level 1 character is already an exceptional person compared to the average peasant so you can have your guy be an accomplished mercenary or a wise sage but you can't start the game as the best archmage to be born in the last 1000 years grand elder sect leader super saiyan sage 4, you gotta work up to it.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

Writing General: 'library' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here
>>96042773

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (dead link, but may be resurrected one day)

Guy went to job, was rejected, only if "be an ass at Artelier and Co" - "no, I'm not weak, I'll go to war". He went by "proved means", killed every boss ever, by 10^7 years at 10^777 planets, at instance, etc, did everything man can do. Gave Kiroshi Super Corp to nature and provided information with protection. How he handled it- he could. So, it.

You're a braver man than I.

I think the best advice is: be flexible. Get too specific with the setting and you can end up railroading your characters, but do too little and it doesn't feel like a real world. I think your approach is good: flesh out each area a little and then wait to see what your players do before getting into the nitty gritty of the details.

Grimdark Warhammer 40k is dead. And not because of "woke". That's also bad, but another conversation. WH40k used to be grimdark and it no longer is. The entire point of the Imperium in 40k was that it's a crumbling house, rotten to it's very foundation, protected by a loose door, which only needed to be kicked in. That was it's grimdark charme.

None of that is true in the current version of the lore. It's led by Primarchs, Space Marines are operating at Legion-level, technological innovation is happening again. Hope for a better future has been restored. If you explained the current state of the story to a newbie, he would not get a grimdark impression of the universe. It's not a tragic dark sci-fi universe. He would not think that. He would think it's capeshit, where the writers constantly asspull new things to save their heroes. You would have to go back to old lore about Hive cities being bad and stuff to try to convince newbies that the Warhammer 40k universe was grimdark.

The Imperium even found a way to completely restore worlds eaten by Tyranids or destroyed by an Exterminatus, because their most famous tech priest Belisarius Cawl is the complete opposite of the faction he is supposed to represent, which regards technological innovation as heresy and interact with technology through religious rituals. He even uses the technology of aliens for his purposes.

Once a culture is no longer able to bear tragedy, their works of fantasy and sci-fi degenerate into capeshit.

You can argue what age it was in, but the fact is at some point that humans were little more than animals who forced their will on others and had a pecking order similar to wolves. Or do you think humanity just naturally sprung up as a cohesive unit without engaging in that behavior previously?

I've only ever played on gamestore mats which were neoprene. Are fabric or vinyl mats hard to keep flat or keep still, or any tips on fixing them to a table? Mousepad material holds to it perfectly but the mats are a bit expensive at the size I want (6'x4').

Because those specific groups of humans have a series of implants that are designed to standardize their phenotypic expressions into a very specific mold?

Seriously a BIG part of why Astartes weren't actually cool based gigachads WAS their autistic racial exclusiveness, where they'd only pull from very selective pools, and critique any physiological deviation. It was part of what made them 'not good guys'. Yeah the not-romans have an excuse, but going by the hard lore, anything that doesn't look like a copy of their Primarch, is a geneseed failure to express fully, or a full on mutation in expression resulting in puffy features. This is why Salamanders are not nigga black, but coal black. Their melanochrome can't down-regulate melanin expression, and they live on a high-radioactivity planet

All that being said, I do actually like the fact it's not all sameface, and that some of them are butt ugly. It speaks to slightly better sculpting standards. But those skin colours should be standardized. Uniform. Or different than what the face structure implies to modern ethnic groups, and dependent on who's holding the plasma cannon today.

it's pretty good, simple and once you know all the 14 cards you can really start bluffing and get wins you're not supposed to win becaue my opp got scared and thinks you got the Escalation card and that's why i'm playing all my cards face down, while in reality it's to hide that i got jack squat and i know he has coinflip odds to get the Heavy Tanks, Planes, and Battleship in his hand, and i hope that he only got one and not two of them AND didn't get Escalation.for himself cause then the ruse is busted

Not that anon but I think both are pretty good. At the moment I prefer Knarr. It's not as brainburny as arboretum by far (if that's good or bad depends on mood) and somehow manages the absurd feat of feeling like a much bigger and longer game than it is. One of the few games to successfully compress a midweight game into a sub-30 min experience. It's also much better at 3p than you'd think albeit clearly at its best at 2p

Trench Crusade General - /trench/Eurofag Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

>How do I get started?
All the files are free online, but are split between the website and the discord. They have all been collected here for your convenience:

Nothing really.
Colonization of the new world didn't happen.

You're absolutely allowed to theme your warbands after Chinese/ Native american/ Pacifica peoples I wrote a thing for a Māori Pilgrim Warband myself. And I know some guy made a Heretic legion warband themed on Aztec blood sacrifices and their religion being demon worship (a mod famously thought this was 'problematic', but this got overturned after everyone else, including the Devs, told him he was being retarded. That's the whole story, I was there).
But that's very much a 'yourdudes' thing. And given these guys, I can't really see them expanding out into the new world, just because some Americans wanted representation tbqh.
