I know MERP had the best illustrations but what is the most lore-accurate Tolkien TTRPG? Some games make up bullshit especially regarding the magic system.BTW, post some old school Tolkien illustrations
>>96908504>How are most Tolkien-inspired games doing Dwarves wrong?Dwarves were not ever described as being aggressive drunkard Scots for one thing, nor were they just short people with beards. They were hardy, strong, stubborn, but honourable people, designed to survive through the harsh times of the First Age. D&D first began the trend of Dwarves being axe-wielding morons, but the LotR films really cemented them as this slapstick idiot viking midget trope.>I mean, sure, the Balrog in LOTR isn't described in tons of details, but imagining them as horned devils doesn't seem too far-fetched?It's too Christian to think of them like that. Tolkien's pretty much only inclusion of his faith was having a single primary God in Eru Iluvatar, but the bulk of divine interaction in Arda was the Valar, which were much closer to a pagan pantheon style of deities than anything Christian, precisely because Tolkien was going for a native British mythology to fill the gap that Arthurian legend (polluted by French and Christian ideologies) awkwardly perched in. It's then fairly obvious to see that Balrogs would be less like Christian demons or devils in aesthetic, and more like fire giants of Norse mythology, since it's clear Tolkien used a lot of Norse mythology already. Less horned goat and more enemies of Asgard.>Aren't Ents described by someone on Saruman's side as looking like a forest that walks? That's the Huorns. They were what looked like a moving forest, because they were literally trees that could move. Ents (name derived from Ettin) were always described more as giant humanoids, similar to trolls, but with some traits that resembled trees (Treebeard, for example, had smooth brown arms, a beard that had some slight mossy and twiggy qualities, big feet with seven toes each, and what was likely clothing made of green and grey bark but potentially was his torso skin, though I lean more towards clothes, his arms were bare and not bark-like, neither were his feet).
>>96908867>(polluted by French and Christian ideologies)Stopped reading right there. You know that Tolkien was an outspoken Catholic, right?
>>96905120The Dunedain as depicted in the Last Alliance are pretty book accurate. They're mostly armored in mail, with wings on their helmets.
>>96910275>Stopped reading right there. Then you stopped reading after I said "Tolkien's pretty much only inclusion of his faith was having a single primary God in Eru Iluvatar", which then renders your question pointless and dishonest. Tolkien did NOT equate his faith with his wider purpose of creating a true English myth. Which is why he never jumped the shark like his friend CS Lewis did when he included a talking lion version of Jesus, for example.
>>96908867>Ents (name derived from Ettin) were always described more as giant humanoids, similar to trolls, but with some traits that resembled treesInteresting. I had the chance of reading LOTR before the Jackson movies came out, but for some reason I still pictured them as animated trees. But re-reading about it, yeah, it seems that indeed you are right.Perhaps what got me confused is that they are said to "come to ressemble" the essences of trees they were watching over and "sometimes turn more tree-like with the time".We don't have any illustrations of Ents made by Tolkien himself? Or at least, directly Tolkien-approved?You also mentioned that the weapons and armour shouldn't be medieval, which period would be the best equivalent to late 3rd-Age tech level?

>>96911114>This is a very stupid theory. That is because you assumed SG and GW 40k/AoS are the same, but they aren't. SG is Forgeworld, a subsidiary of GW with different leadership, budget and production line.Yes the GW grass is greener than the Forgeworld grass, until they realized they had a family, they need food and not grass. I was going on a long rant about the history of Specialist Games revival since 2016 but there're no point. If you know, you know "trust me bruh".But i'll say this : the releases of HH Age of Darkness has seemingly proved that GW has split Forgeworld/SG into 2 or 3 branchs now : one being HH/LI , two being TOW (or maybe it's the same division as HH/LI), and the other is "the rest of SG games". Yeah if i have to make a speculation "the rest of SG games" still sucks because likely these people are being shuffled around working on multiple games with completely different setting, deadline up the ass.
>>96911335>That is because you assumed SG and GW 40k/AoS are the same, but they aren't. SG is Forgeworld, a subsidiary of GW with different leadership, budget and production line.FW got folded into GW proper years ago dude. There's still a dedicated specialist game team that handles stuff like Necromunda and Blood Bowl and TOW but they're directly under GW.
>>96911431FW got folded into GW They're always part of GW, do you think the machinery and building at FW grew legs and merged physically or something? They got their own building, leadership, budget, and machine to produce their own kit separated from 40k/aos, why am i repeating myself?
>>96885219Bought it last weekend it'll be here on friday YIPPEE
>>96911335>>96911526LMAO you're chatting shit based on 10-15 year old information, boomer scum. There is no Specialist Games or Forgeworld. They are called Specialist Design Studio. Their counterpart that does 40K/AoS is the "Main Studio".No they did not get "their own machine" you wretched dunce. SDS shoots their plastics through the same facility all GW's stuff is shot through, the same facility that is constantly tapped out and failing to meet overall kit demand. GW does not and cannot spin up new plastics injection plants at will, ya turd-mouthed idiot.a) they are not a subsidiary, and b) by your own retarded logic GW would be unable to poach "Forgeworld" employees for 40K if "Forgeworld" was a totally separate entity. You put on an absolute showcase of Dunning Kruger excellence, though, grandpa dumbfuck.
Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first decade, Gygaxian D&D, its more faithful modern clones, and content created specifically for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended and taught by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! >>96907018Ok, James I’ll bite.I think most reasonable assumption is to see what kind of homebrew people like (since they make it, means they want it in their games) and then which parts of books are praised the most (since they enjoy it, means they want more of it).I’ll admit. Most of the gaping issues are fixed by this point, we got FBCs, we got… hmm furries aren’t my thing, but we did got them, martial arts were greatly expanded, we got a shitload of weapons, vehicles, sometimes drugs, drones, net gear and shit.Man, just thinking about it makes me realise how far we went the DLCs, sure part of the content is whack (it depends but it’s like 40% for me), but hey, it’s free.Compared to the 2020 series, at this point we would’ve had like 5 books about entire continents lore (including space), multiple adventures (I don’t even count them because I dislike the concept of pre-made adventure).
>>96876951>>96901741>>96907507Isn't Mike in his 70's? I assumed he's soft retired and Red was just the last big project he worked on. CDPR wheel him out every so often to ramble on about lore while he leaves R.Tal to his kids.
>>96907018>What are you expecting/hoping for - more premade adventures, more rulebooks or..? I assumed most GMs prefer homebrew adventures. For the love of god, stop with the adventure books. Personally I'd like a rules supplement, something like Xanathar's Guide to Everything or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Also does anybody know if the NC45 is just a lorebook or if there's going to be any new rules, items etc
>>96911958Don't remind me. I know he'd be against it, but it'd be nice to get an engram of him so his virtual ghost could be consulted. You can kinda do that with LLM training today, but I think he'd have a Dixy Flatline philosophy on being brought back in that capacity. A better option would be some rejuvenation therapy that helps people live longer and gives them a more youthful body, but sadly, I think that tech is about a decade or so away at best.
We keep seeing dwarf and elf threads but where are the comfy halfling threads?
>>96878322>because Elves SPECIFICALLY made one of the most terrible swears/slurs in Common sound exactly like the Half-Foots' name for their race in their own language.Huh? It wasn't spite, it was pure coincidence. Would be pretty weird if it was spite since elves are pretty dismissive of the shorter-lived races, both for good and for ill. Also I'm pretty sure the joke is that their own name is just 'Hobbit' but because of copyright they can't say that.

>>96911902He was great, but also admitted that he was riding the dragon and any of his plans failing would lead to complete disaster.Skill and luck.
>>96910674Don't. I mean, you obviously can just listen to players plan, as >>96911525 says, and you can also call the session when players do something unexpected and take your time thinking up contingencies meant to counter whatever the players did the villain retroactively had in place all along, but don't. Smart villains are fine, villains who start off knowing more about what's going on than the players are fine, and not mollycoddling your players is great, but if players come up with something unexpected, don't devalue it by having the villain actually expect and prepare for it all along. Just let the villain have elaborate plans and let players be the unexpected element ruining those plans, as God intended.
>>96910674Aside from just metagaming the PC plans and justifying it by saying the villain had spies, a crystal ball, or is jus that smart, you can also set them up where they're manipulating both sides of a conflict. Then no matter what happens, it's moving their goals forward in some way, and so they're always able to claim that the PCs did exactly what they wanted them to do.
