If you use psionics in your campaigns, how are you incorporating them into your games and how do the NPCs make use of it?The thought came to mind finding ways to make telepathy more distinct and interesting which was sparked by looking at the Soulknife and wondering why doing something like ease dropping on telepathic communication isn't a thing.
>>971037205e really doesn't support psionics well enough to make it feel worthwhile a lot of the time. At least not as something distinct from all of the arcane magic that covers the typical psionic effects one would think of.I did like some of the ideas behind that one Unearthed Arcana for the psionic subclasses, where rather than a pool of psionic dice you had a single die that shrunk over the course of the day.Telepathic eavesdropping does feel like it should be covered by Detect Thoughts as a spell, since reading a creature's surface thoughts feels like it would naturally pick up on anything that telepath was actively 'speaking'. Though I suppose that only gets you one half of the conversation.
>>97103773I am of the opinion that psionics isn't, and shouldn't be distinct from arcane so that part never really bothered me. But I do agree they don't give a whole lot to work with. Now that you mentioned Detect Thoughts seeing as we have "psionic magic" it seems like it would make for a good deal to have some class ability that has a modified/specific use for the spell.

If magic is overly effective, deadly, and can ritualistically assassinate or control people anonymously from afar, then duels between wizards would be closer to rocket tag, hunkering down in bunkers, manipulation of proxies and influencing politics (perhaps even geopolitics), making direct confrontation between wizards unwise, or just horrific to behold (sorcery can be quite scary and ruinous), unless a wizard knows for certain that they'll triumph without any consequences.

All I can say to contribute here is >tippyverseAnd also the Pathfinder game I ran where the characters were pretty much unstoppable. The only opponents who could stand up to them were those who cast mind blank to avoid getting "scry-n-fried" by the characters. They would just scry on someone til they rolled a nat1 on their saves, then teleport in and gank them. It was retarded. They even used Wish spell to bypass a mind blank once, but there was a roll of 1d10 and 1d4 for how many hours/days/months/years they could be in stasis. Fortunately only ended up being a week missed out. But still even with that, it's ridiculous. High level D&D magic users conflicts is just hiding from each others' divinations and having decoys everywhere.

What are the essentials of a sword and sorcery setting? What sets it apart from other fantasy genres in setting and tone?
>>97102424lol, lmao even
>>97098900Moorcock was certainly trying to make something "answering" fantasy fiction at the time, tough I would guess it was waaaaaay more directed towards Tolkien than REH.But the point is: Elric came out in 1961 (25 years after the last OG Conan's story and a whopping 64 years ago). He's not only a classic, but your grandfather's classic. At this point he's no more a subversion than, I dunno, Sergio Leone "subverting" western movies.(besides, while Elric as a character is clearly trying -and I would say succeding- to be something different from Conan or Kull, his stories aren't that different. They do have a more surreal vibe and all, but then Jirel's stories did in the time of REH)
>>97103280I could never really get into Elric much. I'd probably need to go back to them as it's been a while, but I kind of just remember him being really bad at the hero thing. Also Hawk Wind? Anyone remember those guys? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2jTcmlygA&list=PLWfGw2maX1M6bFLuV7jsBrWtR3F4S2rzJRock musicians are nerds.
>>97103475I don't like him either. Well, actually, Elric himself is ok, the stories are a mess.I was just saying that the mold of the plots used seems pretty much something Moorcock DID NOT want to change.
>>97103504I thunk Moorcock is a good writer, I just don't like how he seems to be intentionally unheroic as possible
Thread #01 Winter Wonderland.Welcome to /un0/, an RP thread for playing a World of Darkness/Chronicles of Darkness Hunter. For any OOC questions about WoD/CofD, check the official general. >>97089644Rules:>We are acephale. There is no storyteller, we are not a quest. >This thread is based primarily but not exclusively in the nWoD/CofD game Hunter: the Vigil. However, Vigil is defined by being highly setting agnostic, with a system for creating entirely custom monsters that do not exist in other WoD/CofD games. Thus, you have significant freedom in what you want to play and what you want to hunt. Feel free to play a member of the Society of Leopold, or a member of the Lucifuge hot on the tail of a Lasombra. >Namefagging is encouraged but by no means mandatory. >Keep in mind that even highly experienced Hunters typically only have fractured pieces of the puzzle, and every table has their own canon. >>97101886>>97102170Yeah you guys were right, I asked around a bit to get an idea of what’s going in here. Girl was a teaching assistant, stay-at-home mother, father works at a mine nearby. Turns out the cops haven’t talked to them yet. Friend of the victim said the she was seen walking home alone after having dinner. That was around 6:30-7:00 pm. It was also raining and dark by then. I walked from the friend’s house over to the victim’s. Took me about 30 mins, walking quickly. The route takes me down a dirt road close to where they found her in a field, past the mine where the dad works, and then to another residential area where she lived. Farmer found her some time in the morning, cops arrived 20-30 mins later. It’s not much but I don’t got anything else. She didn’t say anything weird or act out lately, she was just a normal girl, and she didn’t seem to have any enemies. Could’ve been stalking her or just shit luck. God, idk. I also went back to the crime scene, which wasn’t cordoned off at all, and there was nothing useful there. My source told me the cops in this town aren’t used to shit like this and they showed up to the crime scene that had already been tampered with by the local farmers and kids unwittingly. I’m starting to get the feeling that this whole town is going to be a pain in my ass. >>97102535Maybe you’re right, I thought it was some sort of werewolf thing because of the wounds but maybe I shouldn’t jump the gun. The rain also makes me think has a physical form. Maybe it’s smart enough to attack when the evidence can be washed away. Also hard to see shit in the rain and with the sun setting early. It could be a coincidence. If it’s some kind of ghost, I’m even less prepared. I’m going to camp out on one of the buildings at this mine once everyone goes home. Good view of the fields from up here, maybe I’ll see something with my NVGs and rifle. Probably won't see anything, but I'd feel even shittier sitting at home.
>>97103307No photo of the killer, miscommunication, my bad. I have a photo of the victim's body and of the crime scene. Pretty bad wounds. Think something like an animal did it, with all the tearing and possible teeth marks. And it was big, but no normal animal would go around doing shit like this. Just doesn't make sense. So I got practically nothing. No hairs, no DNA, no footprints in the mud, I don't know what it looks like. All I got is 7:00-8:00 pm, raining and dark when it happened, and big fuck off claws and teeth-- or something that can emulate those types of wounds. I'm just stuck here waiting for it to pop up again, wishing I had fucking magical powers or some shit to lead me to whatever this thing is. I'll post again in the morning if I'm still alive.
>>97103607>>97103701The stakeout is a good idea, it might return to the area. If that turns up nothing, I'd suggest you start talking to people. If this is a small "golly gee whiz" kind of town (honestly, it's nice to hear those places still exist), people talk. I'm not very good at social maneuvering myself BUT, it's pretty much the only way to narrow down who could've killed her if you have no material evidence. Here's hoping you get a hit before this thing causes any more damage.

I don't exactly mind the Ebon Dragon in 2e being Satan. It was a choice but it's not exactly hard to understand. Plus, all things considered, it's nice that they finally finished off that meta-plot that they were working on since 1e exalted.I also don't really mind that 1e and 3e had him being something else instead of just "The Devil" and "Hellfire eternal punishment". The focus on just loving the shit out of doomed things while being a toxic element yet also bringing the gift of darkness is neat. The lack of whole books dedicated to him also adds to that air of mystery.>>97101019I would say either Adorjan (because she casts them away in silence) or Oramus (whom is beyond matters of morality). Isidoros seems more like he could understand it but you move on anyways. I mean, if he wanted to understand them by his nature nothing could stop him. Really it applies to multiple Yozi.Reading over all this would it be safe to say the most popular idea for what happens to an infernal soul world is that it becomes a part of hell? If so, would it be under the effects of the Surrender Oaths? And if not, what could infernals do knowing that if they die they'll create an unbound layer of Hell? It feels like that could be used as a threat. Maybe to avoid that, with the Infernal death they are now bound by the surrender oaths? Without the Infernal there to "be a part of them" they just... become bound in the chains of an oath they never took. I dunno. I think i like the idea of it creating an unbound hell. It's in a special place because infernals are new, so it being disruptive to the settings past doesn't matter. You got a ton of wiggle room.
>>97103229>I also don't really mind that 1e and 3e had him being something else instead of just "The Devil" and "Hellfire eternal punishment".Tbqh what I've seen of him in 3e seems a lot like 2e just with the edginess and cowardice sanded off.
>>97102385Huh. For some reason, I was expecting it to be in Survival. Funny thing, though, it's still in the Zenith set, so it still ends up being an easy grab for the "Infernal Priest" slot.

It’s always been a goofy 2000 A.D. pastiche.
>>97099207These days 40k is written, and taken, super seriously because it's an entirely different set of directions for GW.Instead of being the edgy, gritty OTT universe where you had the choice to be serious or silly, it treats itself like Star Wars, where things HAVE to make sense, and not be too ridiculous, and power hierarchies are a thing because the writers have all caught brainrot and forgotten their roots. But now, a surprisingly large amount of 40k fans are post 2016, post primaris, and ONLY know the sanitized, takes-itself-seriously setting where the Imperium are the 'blue hero guys' and 'the good guys' next to the 'evil red&black guys with horns' (Chaos), and the 'other guys in the backround' (Xenos). And because a large number of these new fans are also media illiterate, and feel the 'authoritarian trad good vs chaotic wild evil' matches their own brainrot political views, they're vehemently against the idea that the setting might not be too serious, because then the setting 'might not agree with them'. Both because that implies their own views are silly, and it involves recognizing material where the good guys (Imperium) do silly evil shit because traditions/power/ignorance/religion/lol why not, and the bad guys (Chaos&renegades) don't actually seem too terrible by comparison.

However, I did like the art.Can you summarise the story?
>>97095410>Can you summarize the story?Sure, broad strokes.1 - 3. Intro to Skogsrå and Andris, gifts and friends.4. Elf leaders get twitchy about fae things like people going missing, house arrest librarian unaware imprisonment is the highest sin for fae. Skogsrå almost declares war. Things go to truce.5. Skogsrå is fed up she can't see inside buildings (unseelie weakness) and creates the peaceful brays by wild shaping goats into humanoids. Sends spies and a specially made bray ambassador named Röst to interact and that does not go well.6-8. Skogsrå appeals to Andris for help while Röst makes friends with a local guard. Andris’ brother Sunblaze introduced. Faffing about happens. Refugees, tea party, etc.9. Skogsrå making so many Bray's has caused her to run low on energy and she greatly increases her consumption. Andris discovers Skogsrå consumes souls of men who wander the forest. Makes a deal she won't eat local people to forest, starts consuming refugees. Röst fails to act as an intermediary, so Skogsrå exiles her. Röst lives on streets in city.10a. Andris gets kidnapped by bandits who are trying to procure exotic slaves, Skogsrå sends the Bray's to save her who kill for the first time becoming breyherds lead by Ilska and Skivare saving Andris. Skogsrå becomes a proper ally and starts proper cultural exchange. Stops killing refugees. 10b. Due to failure of Röst, Skivare attempts to assassinate her, guard saves her, Röst now has a house and "roommate".11. Current section - Cultural exchange creates Forn; wild elves. Up north Skivare has been killing peasants for minor offenses like foraging at the forest borders. Ilska has been fighting real combatants and taking captives for Skogsrå to eat. Kingdom up north sends a knightly order to find out why peasants are dying, while bandit leader sends men to conquer elves from south. Elves can't beat either without causing all out war, decide to hide Skog, Brays, and Forn.
>>97095410https://pastebin.com/zgUbTLw0Not much changes in the first section here. I'll finish the first draft before doing that, but this second section should give a better indication of how the story will go. Paragraph 50 is where the new stuff starts.
