Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Part of the AD&D appeal is precisely the monk-like dedication to parse rules from obscure musings from half-forgotten paragraphs in the DMG. OSRIC 3 was always going to be a betrayal of sorts, but I believe it's a needed one in a moment where the original PHB and DMG are available as PoD and retroclones such as OSE or Dragonslayer are slowly but surely evolving into AD&D-lite.

Is OSE easier to DM/play as a newbie? I tried 5E and it seemed kinda autistic for my non-dork buddies.
>>

We have n00b guides to help you get started, links in the OP.

B/X is very procedural at its core, and much simpler than 5e from practically all points of view. It takes 5 minutes to create a character and, generally speaking, players don't even need to know the rules to play, unlike 5e that is all about character optimisation, character builds, and knowing which class or race power to use when or what feats to take. There's a learning curve to it as a DM, but it's very resilient if you fuck up some rules or make shit up for the first few sessions.

5e DMs complain about burnout all the time, but that's unheard of in Gygaxian D&D, in which DM'ing is loads of fun.

5e is mostly written to titillate the players' power fantasies and for DMs who have always wanted to write novels but were unable to, we despise both here. Gygaxian D&D, on the other hand, was written for DMs to have fun with. There was literally a shift in the target demographics of games and the whole game's philosophy after Gygax left TSR in this regard.

I’m a bit torn on that issue. On one hand, it would really suck to die in the middle of a game after two hours of play, especially without a backup character. On the other hand, I admit it takes away some of the tension knowing that the GM will go to great lengths to prevent you from dying.

More people got into D&D because of Stranger Things and the covid lockdown than because of Shitical Role. The overwhelming majority of their fans don't play a single fucking thing, but buy shit anyways, reinforcing and lengthening a dark age where brainless consumerism drives profits more than genuine engagement, and the damage that has done will be felt for another decade or more if things don't change soon.

2nd part: you act as if WotC has any sort of devotion to the arts versus making their daddy, Hasbro, any money. Once thing gets corporatized, they die.

I basically have nothing to clown on anymore.
It's no longer a trash heap. It's no longer a cesspool. It's no longer a burst open flaming septic tank.

MTG is just an ashen wasteland, barren to the point of being worthless to even reminisce about or spit upon.

Worthless, the lot of it, MTG is. Not even good for entertainment at its expense. The death of this soulless managerial stakeholder capitalism slop culture can't come soon enough.

something something as war rages it nulls the sexuality in the individual. something something individualism is further and further less the vocal point as society ramps up its technology and abandons humanity or something along the way, or maybe humanity advances with such technology with it that they have no need for their sexual identity or something something.I dont know man, I dont really give much a shit about it, but its an echo usually in most mediums in sci-fi. For 40k specific im sure theres some of it for eldar even before the supposed pozzing of the setting before 8th edition, never-mind admech.

And before you even say it, yes. There's a ton of trash in gacha. Some might even say the "good" games are trash. But Gacha still has gems, or even simply designs that make you feel something. That's the tragedy. Gacha might be a painted-up whore with huge fake tits, but that's a hell of a lot better than what the West is offering.

This is a second OSRG, seperate from the main osrg thread, where you CAN talk about 2e, retroclones, and any osr content you want.
This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

It's been more than 20 years since I've played 2e, so I had to doublecheck it but yeah, none of these are "strict", "core" or "non-optional" rules

and also these guidelines are fine and they will most certainly work

Depends what your definition of prude means, but the ideal elven characterization when it comes to their sensuality is that: elves understand and readily accept they are the most physically attractive race and they take pride in their beauty. Flowers, sunsets, and rainbows don't hide themselves away behind layers and neither do elves - but elves also aren't rampant exhibitionists since they aren't whores and won't show just anyone the goods.

Light elves would wear form fitting and thin clothes that show off a lot of skin but ultimately would leave everything but the curves up to the viewer's imagination. Dark elves would show more skin but they too would keep covered up since they're not common street walkers to be oogled at by their lessers.

IRL examples would be women who wear yoga pants and tank tops to the gym (light elves) vs women who wear spandex shorts and sports bras (dark elves). You basically already know what their bodies look like but there's enough left covered up.
>>
>>97217575
No but its common in fantasyslop that there is no real difference between fantasy races beyond superficial features. Unfortunately 99.99% of post-1991 fantasy is fantasyslop including whatever garbage you're consuming.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
