It seems as though it's been a good thread for games, so I may as well contribute too. I played a 2000 point game against dread Cathay today, the first game of the new year, in fact, and it was a pretty great time all things considered. The usual suspects made up my army, but this was also the debut for both my daemon prince, Dehumanizer, who was wielding the Rod of the Damned, the Tome of the Dark Gods, the Armour of Meteoric Iron, and a favour of the gods, as well as my exalted champion, Ormos, who held the Cackling Blade and two favours of the gods. My opponent brought a rather toned-down Cathay list, by his own estimation, with a shugengan lord, a gate master with the monkey stick, whatever the BSB is called, one of those accursed cannons that can shoot twice and also apparently remove swiftstride and impose -1 movement for a turn, a block of jade warriors, two blocks of jade lancers, a sentinel that can cast a fireball at +3 (why can it do this, GW?), and the much-feared sky lantern without the drive-by bombs. Dehumanizer was using the lore of daemonology and rolled Daemonic Vessel and replaced the other 3 crap spells he got with The Summoning, the Blue Fire of Tzeentch, and Fleshy Abundance thanks to the TotDG. Quorthon had a lore familiar and took SoS and both DVs. Apparently Cathay can take High Magic, so that's what my opponent had. Isn't that supposed to be a high elf & lizardmen thing? It doesn't really matter, let's get on to the actual game.

As always, I deployed like a donkey. My thought process involved my hounds starting the battle in a marching column so they could zoom across the battlefield & get in the way of stuff, but this backfired spectacularly as you'll see later. I have no idea why I put my knights there, they were set up for failure from the start. My other units were more or less fine, but I keep making the mistake of deploying my chariot wrong and not being able to get any value out of it. Meanwhile, my opponent clearly knew what he was doing because I can't find any mistakes in his deployment. I took the first turn and the shenanigans began.

Is Warhammer 40,000 actually a misandrist/female supremacist setting? I'm just thinking about how every apparent accomplishment of the setting's major male players was actually done by a woman behind them e.g. the Emperor and Erda, Vect and Lady Malys, Angron and Lotara Sarrin, the High Lords of Terra and Morven Vahl, etc. etc.

>anons wants to discuss niche IE mythology theories and elite viking cults
Let's go.
So my take is that Odin is more or less equivalent to Dionysus. They are both gods of frenzy, associated with wine and poetry, and kind of in a strange position compared to the other gods (whether Bacchus is a part of the Roman 12 depends on the source, for example).
Note that the later Roman Bacchus, who is mostly just the god of getting hammered, is kind of an urbanite degradation of Dionysus, like how Cupid is to Eros. Try to not bring Bacchus to mind (although he is the same at the core), but rather the Dionysus that conquered the Indians: definitely a martial god like Odin.
I won't go deep into the Greek mysteries, because they're relatively easy to research these days. The tl;dr is that they present Dionysus as being a reborn Kronos and/or Kronos as being a reborn Dionysus. Remember that chronology for gods isn't comparable to ours: a single mythic narrative can represent a single past event or represent an ongoing eternal law of nature.
So my theory is that a similar cult evolved in Iceland, either through convergent evolution due to some logic that is now lost to us, direct or indirect Greco-Icelandic contact (remember that Iceland was settled first by Celts from Britain, who had been Hellenized during Roman rule) or due to it being representative of some deeper cosmic truth that these cults were somehow sensing.

The common portrayal of Odin is actually pretty Kronian too, with him acting essentially as what would later become the grim reaper and harvesting the dead. Kronos is also said by the Greeks to rule over the isles of the blessed, a special afterlife for the divinely elect, which is reminiscent of Valhal. There's more to my theory, but it's 2AM and my notes are on a different device.
>>
>>97398731
Thanks anon I'd love to read more of your thoughts I had no idea about most of this
>Iceland was settled first by Celts from Britain, who had been Hellenized during Roman rule
I thought it was settled by viking era Nordics I never really researched their history.
I dunno if we could create a thread about IE E mythology theories but this is all very interesting to me. Got any youtube recommendations about this stuff?
>>
>>97398647
Btw moralizing the IE gods can be a bit of a trap. I wouldn't really try to categorize them as good or evil.
And yeah, Thor is Zeus. Mjølnir is the Thunderbolt and the Vajra. That's already common in the Interpretatio: Thursday/Torsdag is Giovedi/Jeudi/Jueves.
>>97398653
The notion that Odin is an aristocratic cult typically has to do with Rigsthula and the assumption that Odin is Rig, but I'm not sure I buy it. I think Odin oversaw the rite of passage from youth to manhood (see the IE koryos ritual), which was probably a much bigger deal in the warrior aristocracy than in the peasantry. In this role he may echo Quirinus, the almost entirely forgotten god of the ancient Romans who was so important as to be part of the original triad alongside Jupiter (Thor) and Mars (Frey). Rome went through a huge societal change when it ended the monarchy and began the republic after which it was essentially left without any native myths and had to import the Greek ones, so that explains the loss of continuity. Despite this, the Romans still maintained a full time priest of Quirinus despite nobody really knowing who the god was.
Anyway, if we look at Adam of Bremen, the Germanic triad at Uppsala is Thor (described as Jupiter), flanked by Frey and Odin.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Reading this module and it seems great so far - in fact I’m wondering if a description of a hypothetical downed ship in the 3.5 Dungeon Master’s Guide draws on this.

For anyone that has run Expedition to the Barrier Peaks 1) How easily is it adapted for B/X and 2) I feel like showing the illustrations when instructed kind of gives the game away very quickly. Does anybody have any ideas?
>>
>>97397995
The game Worlds Without Number was supposedly inspired in part by BotNS, but that's a system and not a setting or module.

Fomalhaut is a setting with science-fantasy aspects, but it's very dissimilar from either Vance or Wolfe, and is more like a cynical orientalist pulp setting – Harryhausen's Sinbad movies and Lamb's Khlit the Cossack stories come close, I think.

Anomalous Subsurface Environment is a never-completed megadungeon set in a postapocalyptic sci-fantasy wasteland, but again it's less Wolfe and more Gamma World; Mad Max meets Mad Magazine.

These are the closest things I can think of offhand, but to be honest, I think you'll struggle to find anything that replicates Wolfe's baroque strangeness.
>>
>>97398493
>I feel like showing the illustrations when instructed kind of gives the game away very quickly.
Yes and no. If you read the descriptions and look at the illustrations of the various items, you'll probably notice that they're deliberately created to trick people into misidentifying them on the basis of their familiarity with Star Trek and such, so they take the devices' functions for granted and zap themselves in the face with lasers. The illustrations showing the players that they're clearly onboard a flying saucer are part of the setup for these other illustrations with which to mislead them.
>>
>>97398065
if you are the anon and not samefagging, do NOT read the "n00b guide"
The document as a whole pushes a skewed, innacurate view of the OSR, was written by someone who's clearly biased towards AD&D/OSRIC to an unhealthy degree, and is also a hitpiece on anything not outside of the authors narrow one true wayism.

Such a sense is borne of fear, or the worry you can't handle a given situation.
Treat every situation as one that is well in hand, rather than one that requires careful approaching.
Think of a school test whose material you have well studied for; you do not approach it with trepidation, only confident resolve that you can and will succeed. Strike first, strike hard, the battle is already won.

1) Charge your phone
2) Type up your actual questions and put them into context. Is what too strict? Relative to what other options? Do the players even care about the subsystem you're modifying? etc.
>>
>>97398687
By what I can glean from the image, your "rune system" seems to be a whole-ass conlang with astrological influences, which is not going to be sensible to run in tabletop because it's combining exact in-universe time-keeping with detailed semantic analysis. Apply more layers of abstraction to be working with clearly-defined mechanical elements instead of naked linguistics.

Not sure the analogy is right but I'd say the Raptor for the IS. Not the best protected thing in the world but extremely well armed for something its weight and being an Omni can bring its own BA support without slowing down. Arctic Fox I'd say also falls into this category but I am not too fond with a lot of the configs.
Clans you've got a choice of the Kit Fox, Adder or Cougar depending what config you go for. They ain't the fastest designs but they can pack a punch.

I'm guessing that anon is referring to the completely unexpected performance that the Bradley had during Desert Storm. Absolutely no one from either side anticipated it to be capable of engaging and absolutely annihilating entire battlegroups of tanks. The Russians, former USSR satellite states and everyone else who was buying their equipment shit themselves reading over those reports.

They had expected it to perform something near the BMP and finding out they could actively seek out and engage armored formations was every bit as shocking as the performance of low weight Clan mechs was to the Inner Sphere.

Rule 1: In order to become canonical each post has to pick up something that has already been established by someone else and build on it. Only in this way can something new be added.

Rule 2: Keep it within reason and don't break the immersion for everyone else.

Rule 3: Have fun.

Starting with a rough premise to set the tone:
>Players are bug-headed-investigators collecting evidence of a vast, hidden control system that governs reality.
>Detective work involves getting high on insecticide, cut-up-techniques and orgon accumulation.
>The "Mugwumps," the "Reptiles," and the "Grey Officers" all represent control entities that feed on energy.
>Don't trust 'em.
>They are bureaucrats of a gnostic, alien order.
>Be aware of the insect archons!
>They are parasitic deities that can manifest as viruses (biological and linguistic), addictive substances or bureaucratic control.

The 'many' being everyone.

The alien overlords have already won, but refuse to admit their true existence, even to themselves. The reasons are various.

Some fear competing aliens
Some have forgotten
Some believe the charade is meaningful in itself
Some fell in love with humanity and no longer want to return to their original selves.

if possible I'd keep trying to introduce them to established DnD settings (or Pathfinder settings) since that game seems to be one they're the most familiar with. Trying to drag them kicking and screaming into a whole new set of books and a heavily immersive world of lore might be difficult. You could also look at games like the Warhammer 40k RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games, or Wrath and Glory, since those are specifically designed around an established setting that they have to learn and understand or else their characters will be swiftly deleted by the Imperial authorities.

Good advice, yeah I'll consider it. I just like WoD more than Warhammer and DnD but maybe I should keep it in mind.

Eventually, if they show a positive progression of appreciation for worldbuilding and deep lore, introducing them back to WoD should be much more successful.

Let see what ToreChads did
>Arikel is the favorite and the oldest of Caine
>Her brother and sister Antediluvians SEETHE with jealousy because of her beauty and power
>Clan "curse" is boon to make her Kindred feel alive
>inspiration for the Path of Humanity
>Arikel is still up and running without causing too much havoc; might be in Greece
>While the goddess of vanity, she's the most humane vampire in existence.
>Toreadors are the leaders of culture
>so hedonistic, they can topple empires like Rome and Carthage
>Ventures and Brujah still SEETHE at Toreadors because they believe Toreadors caused their pet empires to fall which they did lol
>Started the Renaissance
>started many trends really
>can manipulate kine with just words or just a bit of Presence
>sex appeal so strong even the most cold Tremere fall for them

Read the 3e core book (link below). For mechanics of the old edition, play this tutorial:http://mengtzu.github.io/exalted/sakuya.html
It’ll get you familiar with most of the mechanics.

Oh they also say
>The capital of Halta boasts a population of almost
two million
Make up your damn minds 1E writers, there's a big difference between over 1 million and almost 2 million
>>
>one of the Sidereals that destroyed Fallen Lapis was killed with a single arrow by the Bull of the North
They sent the jobber Sidereals I suppose
>>
For completeness sake, here is the 3e write up on how the Haltans grow food:
>Haltans collect rainwater in barrels and cisterns. In times of drought, water can be hauled up from the rivers, but such work is hard and risks encounters with the fae.
>The Haltan diet relies heavily on fruits, berries, and nuts such as hazelnuts, grapes, and rose hips, as well as tender leaves, shoots, and inner bark when in season. Farmers tend to treetop gardens, transporting soil from the surface over the years and replenishing it with composted material. There they grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers for the beekeepers’ hives to pollinate. Mushrooms, harvested from caves in hollows beneath the trees, feature in many dishes.
>Animal products, though a luxury, form a significant part of the Haltan diet. Households cage-raise small birds, rabbits, rodents, and lizards for meat, eggs, fur, feathers, and the like. Hunters train hawks to catch small game like squirrels and hares on the ground, or to pluck smaller birds from the air and fish from the river. Trappers drop snares from low branches to capture larger animals and work together to haul them up into the trees.

Huh, a real downgrade from 1E's description, I don't remember what 2E had

>They sent the jobber Sidereals I suppose
You think that Sidereal was jobbing? The other Sidereal that was involved got executed. Dying to bureaucracy when you have Arcane Fate and any number of opportunities to just walk away into temporary exile takes some doing.

Post art you like.
