>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,

>the easiest and best looking is to paint the water on and then use glossy modpodge painted on top of the water to give it a wet shimmery look

This excellent advice deserves to be repeated. A rough brush on of dark blue paint, followed by a brush of mod podge will get closer to pic related than anything you do with resin

there's a lot of good systems that could work for wc depending on the scale you want.
if you're looking for models you could just rip game models and print them.
>>
>>97394808
>you could just rip game models and print them.
Could you? Even if you could rip the raw models, more often than not they're not something you could just print and use.

I can see Warcraft 3 models work in something like 15mm
WoW models wouldn't look good in any form desu

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: what's the best classic GURPS cover art?

I was reading the part in the Campaigns book where they talk about drawing maps. They just tell you to use 2 hexes per inch or 5 hexes per inch paper or whatever to draw your maps for reference. I thought that it would be very difficult to find such paper, but turns out that students of organic chemistry, and some home improvement people who work with hexagonal tiles, and some handycraft people also have uses for hex grid paper. So I bought some hex paper notebooks for my map making purposes from amazon and I am rather excited.

IIRC kromm's reasoning, it's because Fast-Draw is a "borderline" cinematic skill that sits in an awkward place between heroic realism and truly cinematic. Parry Missile Weapons sits in a similar boat.
If you want to add defaults to these skills, it probably wouldn't break the game. Something like "DX-4 or weapon skill-4" for Fast-Draw might be appropriate.
I personally use a more generic "multiple maneuver" house rule that extends the precedent set by Rapid Strike and Acrobatic Stand to every maneuver.
>You can try any combination of multiple maneuvers (Ready, Concentrate, etc.) on your turn at -6 to skill per extra maneuver (like a Rapid Strike).
>If your maneuvers have different active defenses or movement, then use the worst defenses but the best movement from among them.
>If a maneuver doesn't require a roll, then the GM may call for a DX or IQ roll at +6, plus your penalty for multiple maneuvers.
>You can also try an extra maneuver later in your turn at no penalty to previous maneuvers, but at -12 per extra maneuver (like an Acrobatic Stand).
>Failure means your turn ends, and critical failure causes a fumble of some kind (drop your weapon, fall down, mental stun, etc.), so extra maneuvers are never risk free.
This rule probably isn't necessary in most low-point campaigns, but for me it's come into play quite often in campaigns where PCs have exceedingly high skill.

Take it back and get a better hobby since you're already starting wrong, save yourself the trouble.

Assuming that’s the first kit you got in the pic, use the models it came with to practice. Do each one different to get a feel for the style you like. Use a spray primer to fully coat each model before you paint. Army Painter black/white/grey is a good choice and cheaper. Shake for at least 5 mins before using the first time. Just a light spritz on every side of the model and make sure you get into crevices.

Start “deep” in the model at first. By this I mean details that semi-obstructed or not surrounded by other areas you’ll need to paint later. This way when paint gets on other parts it doesn’t matter because you haven’t gotten to them yet and you aren’t ruining what you’ve already done. You don’t need to let it dry long before adding colors on top. Learn what each type of paint does.
Base paint is thick and for primary colors on the surface of the model.
Layer is thinner than base but still thick enough that it will heavily show through the base and even fully cover it in large amounts.
Contrast is even thinner and used to modify existing base/layer colors. It will make the colors darker/lighter depending on what you’re using but if you use it over the wrong color (ex red contrast on yellow base) it will look weird. You can do this as you play around, but it won’t always work as you want it to.
Shades are super thin and used to give the model a more robust look. Some make them look dirty (Agrax earthshade) and others darker and shinier (nuln oil). You don’t have to use a shade, but many people do a “wash” at the end on each model. You just coat the whole model in the shade and wa la.

>>97394490
This is a clear troll. Citadel paints are thicker. I’d recommend getting a pallet of some sort. Add the paint then add a drop or 2 of water to thin it out. You’ll cover more surface area and it will be more consistent with less brush lines.
>>
>>97394759
Oh and I forgot to add to the paint type list:
Technical paints are usually added to give a texture. The astrogranite in the kit you have has a gritty, cement-like texture to it. You have others like nihilakh oxide which gives it things a kinda dusty, blueish oxidized copper tinge. Blood for the blood god adds a nice realistic blood effect. Get crafty with them. They can be fun.
>>
>>97394427
Happy Birthday
1, The first thing I wish someone had told me is that there is a learning curve before you even have the technique right. I straight destroyed my half of the box set with horrible paint ideas, but it was all learning. If you like the figures, you might want to set one or two aside, paint 99 cent plastic army men or cheap plastic dinosaurs from a toy store for a while, and sort of learn what painting on a 3D surface even feels like.
2. Thin your paints has been memed into tiresomeness here but it is a beginner tip that many beginners still don't hear at first. The GW paints are supposed to be mixed with water, not painted from the pot.
3. If you are unhappy with a paintjob you can always strip it with isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush. However, for your first minis in particular, I recommend not doing that, because it's important to see how you've progressed.
There are many many tips and videos, we have an active thread that is nothing but the painting journey. But for beginner tips, I think those three are concise enough.

Greater Demons can only possess champions, regular chaos marines can be possessed by lesser demons. But you still need proper marks of chaos the keep them on table.
>>
>>97390859
I think normal marines can't be posessed only the special ones who bear the mark. Like plague marines
>>
>>97390886
Yes, that's right, but you still need unpossessed chaos space marines with same marks to keep the demons on table. Very expensive way to get to play demons, I don't recommend it. Just take banner that adds summoning points instead.

I think floating artillery works if it has energy weapons on board, but I guess that would look far too off compared to the rest of the army. Though I might be wrong here, since it is geared with grav stuff all the way, could probably use an energy-based artillery too.

This leaves out how chaotic the chaos gods are and their fickle nature that plays into how they interact with their servants.

Some are instant simps who fall into worship, some play hard to get and think they are enlightened by their intelligence and can treat them like a tool.

It's not like the Gods are going for maximum efficiency, and often self-sabotage because of their very nature or simply because they find it amusing.

After playing both the original Shandalar and the 2016 update version I've come to the conclusion that magic was just more fun in 1995 when it was more loose and relaxed. The kinds of decks you go up against in the 2016 version are so much more ruthless about shutting down every play you make that the only way to compete is to be an even more obnoxious dickhead and make sure they never get a chance to do anything. Every victory was bitter and spiteful in a way that I never felt with the older simpler Magic cards.

I can't imagine wotc is having interns manually program "do thing, draw card" 100 times every set. It'd be funny if someone made a simulator that's just like the rest except instead of an engine for the actual game it's a fancy wrapper for an LLM.
>>
Honestly a lot of nostalgia for the old era of the game is dumb as shit. I certainly don't miss getting mauled to death by 'togs and dogs and then getting mauled to death by arcbound ravager and then getting mauled to death by jitte and then-

For all of this game's flaws theyl period after this is when they learned a lot of lessons that I think genuinely made this game better- the Lorwyn/Time Spiral era of the game was much more enjoyable then anything that came before, with varied and interesting decks, all card types actually being viable instead of creatures being dogshit, the rules being polished and the miserable shit that made the game dull being toned down to a minimum. I genuinely don't know how anyone can feel nostalgia for shit like Stasis decks, for Owling Mine or Circular fucking Logic.
>>
>>97391502
it doesn't need to be an LLM, it could literally be a script with somebody following it to clean up unusual/trouble cards.
lots of smaller CCGs have sims with full automation that are literally just community projects hand coded and maintained by one or two volunteers. mtg has an order of magnitude more cards in eternal than any of them, but with wotc's resources that's not an impossible task.

>At no point does Tolkien's world-view prevent ontologically Evil races

No, but his text does.

"Nothing is evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so."
- Gandalf

A lorelet is you, Anon. Tolkien had a character old enough and wise enough and knowledgeable enough to be considered an authority on the subject, directly state that *nothing is innately evil*.

He didn't say "nothing, except Orcs".
He didn't say "nothing, although after successive generations it might become an innate part of a thing".

Nothing. Period. And he even points to the most Evil thing currently extant in Middle-earth and says "he didn't start that way".

NTA but "nothing" isn't the exact same as "no one". You'd have to have a very high opinion of free will and individualism to interpret that as meaning that individual orcs have free will to just not do orc shit.
I read that as "ontologically evil orcs come from something that wasn't originally ontologically evil", if you catch my meaning. Once they are transformed into orcs, they are now ontologically evil. But I am a lorelet, so I have nothing to back that up with and I didn't care for the Silmarilion.

I don't mind the balloon existing for rule of cool purposes, but it is ridiculous that it's currently a flying tank considering what it is made of.

I didn't mean that a Hochland rifle or a group of handgunners could get it on fire, but it's such a large target flying low enough that a volley ought to make it crash, or a single shot by an engineer set the explosives off.

/tg/ is always a cesspit (or, atleast, has been since Covid), but the big issue with Warhammer Fantasy/TOW is that there isn't really an alternative general forum one can go to. Reddit is just karmafarming for "professional" miniature painters with very little in the way of actual discussions (where "unpopular" opinions get downdooted), and many of the old dedicated forums for the minaitures or fun fluff discussions are pretty much dead. I'm not touching the Total War forums with a ten foot pole.

I'm not really your usual anon, but I (and probably most people here) don't have anywhere to go, unless you want to limit yourself to local Discords and WhatsApp groups (which, in my case, are 40k dominated).

The goblin girl is just a generic quirky chungus cute girl with unusual facial features that are presented in an attractive way, like all goblin girl art.

Gaia is the spirit of Creation. As in the spiritual reflection of the world the Elohim made. Just like the spirit of a fox is a reflection of a fox.

This is however slightly boring and though correct I would just like to picture Gaia as a very irresponsible mother.
>>
>>97393926
Maybe Gaia can only make Spirits of such a nature because that's her own nature as the top Spirit? Thus it's autism all the way down
>>
>>97394101
You're welcome to, if that's your prerogative. However, the only real 'fact' that is known about her is that she is the spirit of the Earth and its Penumbral Realms. Whether she's a Celestine or something more, whether she made the Triat or was made by the Triat, whether she was the seraph Ziana before she became Gaia and the World Tree, whether Gaia dwells in Pangaea or the Summer Country or in both locations and possibly others simultaneously, all of this is speculative.
>>97394312
Only if you subscribe to the theory that she is responsible for the creation of all spirits, which isn't necessarily true. In the end, as a spirit, she's defined by her nature just like all of the others, for better or worse.

The Ananasi get told what happened by Ananasa, who was like, there. Ananasa may not tell her children everything, but she rarely if ever outright lies - at least not without a very good reason.
So, per that, Gaia is a creation of the Wyld. The first and most brilliant of the Wyld's children, who allowed the Weaver and Wyrm to alter her too.

(Plus the back of the book, as an out of character narration, says that the Ananasi are pretty much correct about the origins of the universe.)

Have any of you ran your players through the Theater Kid Wood Chipper? How many of them tried to stick something in Acererak's mouth?

I haven't told them anything, they're going in completely blind.
The only thing they do know is that it is horrendously dangerous, but in a different way to Tomb.
If they manage to get through and still want more punishment, the next one is Throne of Bloodstone.

How do you play in a module after having run it?
>>
>>97392326
Were they retarded? The DM isn't bound by rules.
>>
>>97394254
Otherway around. People who played in it wanted to run it or possibly wanted to see how they could have won.
>>
>>97394327
No, dumbass. You said that you shouldn't play in a module you've read before. Therefore, if you've ever run a module, you can never play in a game featuring that module ever again. I know you can understand how retarded that is.
