Obviously this talks about the 5e version, my 4e knowledge is unfortunately quite limited. But I wouldn't think there are that many people like your friend, who have memories mainly about the previous variants and think it was 2e needs or should have. There's so many 5eWarlock fans because the fantasy of "Unholy Powers At A Dirt Cheap Price" meshes well with the absolute glutted hog that is the Warlock chassis.

As shown, if it was just the fantasy or specific mechanics people like, they have options. But none hits *everything at once* like 5e Warlock does.
>>
Speaking of warlock, any pointers for my very WIP brew? I feel I'm happy with the chassis now, still needs a ton of feats. https://scribe.pf2.tools/v/WHmHfolp

>"Intelligence or Other" would be faster to write out and leave you a bit of wiggle room in case you want to do something else like CON casting
>I don't quite get the lore of From Within and From Without schemes. I kind of get why From Within has Medicine training, but Without having Deception is strange since it isn't like you are draining other people magic or power. It would probably be better to just give the whole class scaling Occultism training and word the lore clearer.
>The lack of a Patron or enough lore to justify having/not having one is concerning, given the point of Warlocks in D&D.
>I'm personally not a fan of Eldritch Gambit or Strained as an idea. I get that it presses them closer to Oracle and properly adds the Power At A Price idea normal Warlocks are missing, but essentially them all being Wild Magic Mages, down to even summoning an additional foe, reaaalllly makes them risky to actually have. If we are shitting on Daredevil for being worse at every role it's trying to be, I can't see anyone being impressed with a whole class that is detrimental (even if the odds of such aren't high). This might be better as a feat, something to opt-in over a core part of the class.
>Also you likely outscale such a monster anyway by the time you could roll it so it is just annoying fodder that could fuck up a turn.
>Why does Eldritch Ward gives me a random hardness shield?? If you want random damage reduction, keep it simple stupid and make a reaction.
>Eldritch Shell is WAAAY too poachable.
>It does have the Commander & Kineticist compatibility issue, as Eldritch Blasts are not spells or weapon attacks.
>It's currently lacking some real field presence. Having to wait until Eldritch Barrier to be able to make anything that doesn't just disappear instantly means you lack impact in a battle.
>>
>>97831078
Thanks for the feedback!
>From Within/Without
Yeah the lore could be better, I lifted the names from Dark Heresy 2e splats and From Without was Intimidation at one point, not that I couldn't change it again.
>Pact and Patron
Already Witch's deal
>Gambit
Do you think it could be a good feature if the Wild Magic effects were balanced better? It's supposed to be a gamble for action efficiency.
>Ward
Hmm, maybe I could change the value. Gambit is supposed to be the random part of the class.
>Shell
No less than the armors from Kineticist
>Commander
ACKSHUALLY I did specify that Eldritch Blast counts as the Cast a Spell activity and that Eldritch Blow counts as a Strike. Should they have different language to make them work?

>Do you think it could be a good feature if the Wild Magic effects were balanced better? It's supposed to be a gamble for action efficiency.
Again, it is a personal deal. I'm not 100% against Wild Magic tables and the like, hence why I say it should be a feat akin to Oracle's Roll the Bones. But the concept is not something that can be all that balanced as a core class feature. If you aren't doing ONLY negative effects to balance out Gambit's potential, then you are very limited in that design space unless you consider the class to be a joke. I can't say it would be UNPOPULAR, I still people gushing fondly about Legacy Ancestors Oracle. I just prefer consistency over chaos unless I get in a good mood or headspace.
>Hmm, maybe I could change the value. Gambit is supposed to be the random part of the class.
It's less about the value more than the mechanics of Eldritch Ward. You are adding a lot for something that probably gonna end up worse than the Shield cantrip most of the time, just to luckshit some extra defense when you get hit. I rather just cut to the chase and luckshit the damage reduction than fuddle around with a shield, even if I like the shield rules of 2e.
>No less than the armors from Kineticist
It's actually much more than Kineticist's. Neither Metal Carapace or Hardwood Armor actually scales up to Heavy Armor or grant the Bulwark trait. Sentinel can't grant any unarmored class Heavy Armor like that. This have armor specialization which is usually a separate feat nor comes at Level 1. And again, it auto-scales up and at a faster rate than innate armor like Scaly Hide or Reinforced Chassis. When I say it is poachable, I mean that anyone with +3 STR wants it and can get it cause it would be one of the freest armors in existence. Multiclass Warlocks may have to wait to L4, but it still would be entirely worth it.

I will say it already does feel like a class that can fit in with the current roster. Occult Kineticist does sound fun.

It can still randomly top YCSes and is strong for locals, so I'd put Maliss at rogue. And due to how it works, it generally just promises to inevitably get better because it really synergizes with the general cyberse toolbox. It's just been hit hard enough that its no longer full power/top of the meta.

White binder is maliss' strongest card and she's banned in TCG. Still, be it TCG, OCG or MD, the deck is nothing without march hare and backup secretary.

Pure version is certainly dead, but it can be mixed with other strategies as a supplementary engine and do some good work, especially at more standard regionals or locals.

Casters were supposed to be frail, so the frontliners were there to protect them. That was the basic assumption and it still works like that in some japanese RPGs. In western systems that the casters quickly become completely self-sufficient, if they don't start like that already.

Post some stories about your games or campaigns.
I'll start:

>Sister wants to play a science fiction game, preferably in the vein of space exploration
>Decide to run OSR, specifically Broodmother Skyfortress, but it's reskinned as a science fiction game
>"Evil company" (!notWeyland-Yutani) subcontracts the PCs to send some shipping container to an offworld colony; they aren't allowed to know what's inside. They bring along an artificial intelligence named C.L.I.E.N.T. that guides the PCs through an Android it operates called C.L.I.O.
>When there is a crash, a shipping container reveals a biohazard, some sort of alien lifeform or organism that was hidden inside a cryogenic vessel; there is a nearby alien that has had its chest cavity blown through...
>It turns out that the biohazard is an egg and something familiar comes out of it
>Sister asks: "Is this what I think it is?"
>Egg hatches and a facehugger comes out; it tries to attack the PCs... meanwhile, the chestburster is hiding behind some containers
>Simultaneously, the chestburster and facehugger attack the PCs, but sister is able to kill them off; it turns out that an alien species of elephant-centaurs have tried to enslave the Xenomorphs as a military asset but were contaminated by these lifeforms when their colony ship (the Skyfortress) was compromised
>Sister gets told by C.L.I.O. that the "evil company" will pay her all the credits she wants if they are able to track down the colony ship and bring back more specimens in cryogenic cubes; she travels to the alien colony ship (where the aliens are big elephant-centaurs), which has been overtaken by the Xenomorphs; there are lairs and hatcheries everywhere, and sister has to fight off all the facehuggers, Xenomorph-elephant-centaurs, and chestbursters

>Players are clearly too afraid to just go in and shank the dude like DM wants.
>Both players and DM are fed up with the amount of time spend on this.
>Entire story is full of 'gotcha' moments, where the players attempt something, but they make some fundamental mistake from; not specifying exactly that they do or don't do something, or not taking into account something that only gets revealed later on.
>Discussed burning down taxman's house? Whoops, you were doing it in a tavern and didn't specify exactly that you were whispering so as to not have anyone else hear your plot of arson.
>Want to knock on the gate to try talk to someone? Silly player, it's actually too far away from the house for anyone to hear.
>Want to torch the place? Silly player, the floor is made of stone and there are few pieces of furniture, which your torch misses.
>Use an illusion spell to change your appearance to be innocuous? Whoops you didn't specify your face changes, so you're now recognizable to these people who've never had a good look at you.
>Oh you want to fight a duel? Silly player, your character has a shield, which is totally forbidden in a duel so he loses immediately.

I don't make a habit of criticizing other games, but if your players are so worried about consequences that they're spending hours irl going back and forth, they're constantly not understanding the environment, and you're catching them out on little things like "the half-asleep wife of the taxman recognizes your pc's face from glimpsing it in a poorly lit room, despite changing his clothes and being somewhere else" or "your pc loses the duel because he dares to use a shield", then that's the sign you're being a shit DM (either bad at expounding the setting to your players well, bad at giving your table the benefit of the doubt about their actions, or you're trying to oppose your players, which is pointless because the DM always wins).

You've got some misunderstandings here.

>Both players and DM are fed up with the amount of time spend on this.
They weren't. I was. They didn't see a problem with it (at the time; they've since realized it was kind of ridiculous)

>Entire story is full of 'gotcha' moments
I don't see how openly discussing committing arson in a tavern - not to mention all the NPCs they were pestering about the tax collector's location, and suddenly his house burns down a day or 2 later... Maybe we have different definitions of "gotcha" but any competent group of investigators would easily discover the culprits in this situation. However, they could've evaded capture entirely had they just left the city.

>Whoops, you were doing it in a tavern and didn't specify exactly that you were whispering so as to not have anyone else hear your plot of arson
Yes, unironically. I'll give them some credit, there was a point they realized "hey maybe we should discuss this in our rooms or something" and they moved, but the damage was done.

>Silly player, it's actually too far away from the house for anyone to hear
Seriously what's actually the problem with this? Go to any gated house and knock on the gate and see if you get an answer.

>Silly player, your character has a shield, which is totally forbidden in a duel so he loses immediately
Yes, because he (the player, to be crystal clear) requested a duel WITH SWORDS. He even told me right afterwards he had a gut feeling using his shield wasn't gonna be allowed, but he tried it anyway because he didn't wanna eat the 4whatever damage the tax collector would've done.

>the half-asleep wife of the taxman recognizes your pc's face from glimpsing it in a poorly lit room, despite changing his clothes and being somewhere else
I dunno man, feels like a stranger in My house is something I'd remember (speaking from experience) enough to recognize him 10-30 minutes later, even if he had a costume change.

>your pc loses the duel because he dares to use a shield
Again, yes, see above. He wanted it and admitted he knew better.

>either bad at expounding the setting to your players well
This is the only one I think you might have some ground with. This was all a few years ago when we were teenagers and I'd like to think all of us have improved since then (although I haven't really played with them, but I have recently starting GMing again), but I don't like the kind of games - either as a player or GM - where the players are getting handheld through things that are obvious common sense, and My players knew I wasn't running that kind of game.

Don't discuss committing crimes in a public setting. Things that obviously won't work, like setting water on fire or knocking on a gate (a gate to a fence that can be easily climbed over, from which point you can knock on the door; although you'd probably be trespassing) won't work. If you don't say "I cast fireball", you don't cast fireball, and I will not assume you make the optimal choice of casting fireball nor am I going to tell you that casting fireball is a good idea in this situation.

Post your favorite mundane monsters or stories of players underestimating them because they are just big animals. Giant crabs are always fun

Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG by R. Talsorian Games, set in a (then) future inspired by film noir and the dark science fiction films and books of the late 20th century. It focuses on simulationist gameplay and lethal near-future combat.

Roll for the Galaxy expansions modify this. The alien orb expansion gives 15 points per player or 15 tiles as the end condition. There has to be a balance but a group could also house rule and say that they want to see what 16 turns feels like this game. You know that could be interesting. Maybe even have two or three scoring rounds and add them up? I had this discussion a lot about It's A Wonderful World. That game is tight and leaves most people feeling like they need one more turn. I do agree that there needs to be a balance but for myself personally I like feeling the pressure of knowing I can't waste one turn. I feel like I'm generally expecting the end conditions of most games I play but I realize that not everybody is tuned into that while they are focusing on playing. I will also say that I felt like I enjoyed Roll for the Galaxy a little more when it was shorter without the expansions. The expansions are cool but some games can drag now.
>>
>>97830142
Hmm I think Roll does more than Race, if only because of how uneven turns can be. Race you have a pretty clear idea of someone's tempo and most of the time it's only going to ramp up compared to Roll's mitigation vs luck factors.

>leaves most people feeling like they need one more turn.
is the golden rule embedded into all euro designers - any game that goes a turn too long is blasted, any that goes a bit short is forgiven. I usually don't have this problem more so than games that just take too long to spin up, which is usually why I default to all the quick-start/shorter game rules (Imperium, AFFO, even Slay the Spire as of late) even if the game is potentially more swingy and railroaded

Have you played necromunda before?

And what exactly is the point of this downtime game, which is followed by a phase with a single multiplayer game that immediately ends the campaign? You'd be better off doing a mid-phase 1 special scenario, or just starting your next campaign slightly earlier.

Years ago I did a jail break scenario for a downtime game.
Have some kooky character wallowing in the cells, freeing them lets you include them in your next game.

I’ve consider straight up ripping off the plot of dark tide to have some kinda co op sessions in between. I’ve been toying with the idea of palanite enforcers being more of a dm force who breaks up scenarios or makes the gangs work together while still working against each other in some way.

I used to not really like the armageddon sector fleet list but I tried actually using the space marine ships available and it has completely solved my usual problem in a fleet like this of trying to include another carrier and light cruisers, anyway how does this look as a fleet?

I am so very, very mystified by the broader RPG community at times.

Yeah, easier to keep the DnDrones and normies out of hobbies when we're not on a public forum.

I really love hex tile games so I made one where cities are dice (to represent the size) and you draw tiles from a random bag like Carcassonne and place them according to rules (like you have to contribute to existing forests or mountain ranges on the edge until they're a certain size, before you can start a new one).

The game was very visually and tactilely satisfying to me, which is important since it's being played in the physical realm. But the girls, as you can see, are a bit small. So I bought new ones.

I haven't painted them yet but I am hoping to add some numbers to them, almost like Catan has.

So therein lies my question (and I know I'm leaving a lot of details out, this game is very different from Catan, but it's basically a 4x tabletop hex tile game). My question being:

Do people actually like rolling dice in Catan? I think in Catan it's a very elegant way of adding depth to the game.

Currently in my game, you roll 1d6 per population of a city, and for each 5 you roll you can get a resource of the tile your city's on, and for each 6 you can get that or an adjacent resource. But that leads to a lot of dice rolling. By the end game you might be rolling 10 pools of dice each with 6 dice, and making decisions along the way.

So obviously I want to simplify it.

But the question is, do people even like the dice rolling in Catan? Or would they rather the randomness be removed from it?

Basically there are 5 different biomes and 5 different animal types. You place tiles and animals.
Scoring is based on animal behavioural patterns, so salmon runs in waterways are worth more points the longer you can make the water way, etc.
Its quite simple but has a lot of clever placement. There's also points for the most linked same biome type, etc.
More advanced play has different behavioural patterns for variety. Its a really clever game that links placement and theme quite well.

Java's an older eurogame but also good. Its a 3d hex stacking game with area control and height, basically trying to throw the biggest and tallest party.

That looks cool. Any mechanic highlights? I'm into games that don't involve dice, but I do also like that element of randomness to throw some chaos into the works. I think choice should go into resource collection, possibly with multiple resource types per hex, but not more than three.

I might have to see if my FLGS game library has it and take a look, they have a lot of free games people can just play, to encourage people to go there. I already play there and buy drinks / snacks so I wouldn't feel bad looking at their sample copy. Kind of sounds like Carcassone, but with more meeples.

>>97827278
Java's randomization is from tile draw. Its been at leas t2 decades since I've played it so the standout mechanics are not going to be there.
Check out Cascadia for sure if you see a copy, its a solid game.

>Java's randomization is from tile draw.
Do you think that's enough by itself as a random element for a game?
Or I guess I would say, do you think that as a substitute for the random resources of Catan is good?
Or would two "axis" of randomness be an improvement?

That very much WAS a consideration. But I went with axes because it felt more appropriate for NL, who seem more the "brutish" type to me. (also the mechanical reasons given).

Hold the model in the palm of your hand, go in sideways, don't (DON'T) overload your brush. I prefer to use contrast these days for eyes, with regular acrylics as the highlight.

>How do you paint eyes
A long fine tip brush WITH a nice belly so it can actually hold some fucking moisture and doesn't just dry out instantly.

Then most importantly: a drop of retarder medium mixed with the paint. This stops it from drying too fast and gives you some time to actually work.

I load up my brush, test how it's flowing / dotting on my thumbnail, then I just go for it. Brush stroke starts from the inside of the eye then to the outside, then flip the model upside down and do the other eye with the same movement. Then come back in with the skin tone to touch up any mistakes.

Drop some paint on my wet palette > Dilute it > Retard it > Load brush > Test on thumb > Make Adjustments > Test again > Deep breath and just fucking do it.

Dotting the eyes is exactly the same procedure except it's a quick dab instead of a horizontal movement. I don't usually dot the eyes. I personally prefer the look of just painting the eye whites.

What's a good way to paint Iron Hands without an airbrush?
I've painted a few using a slapchop method, but I've never been 100% happy with them.
Any tips on how to improve?
