It is still a thing very much. What changed is the discours. If you are interested about the game being good and having fitting rules, you aren't going to talk about it in the "regular" places that used to serve this point. We are basically heading toward dead internet - it's either bait, or bots, or both and it takes to be insane to stick around.
As for discussing games: there is a regular meet-up in my city on a weekly basis, that gets 30+ people (which at population of 40k is pretty impressive), talking about games and designing those. And guess what - it's completely apolitical, not to mention US-style culture war bullshit.
So in a way, the hobby went full circle - from people interested in gaming meeting up, through internet broadening the contact, back to people interested in gaming meeting up. Which sucks (the loss of net) if you ask me, but the hobby itself is doing fine.

Unironically the most Right wing games are historical wargames

How does tg feel about Ravenloft? I'm about to go all-in on a Ravenloft game and I'm wondering how it stands up these days. I really like it obvs but I want to avoid any massive pitfalls I shouldn't be doing with it. First adventure will be a mystery I am going to set in Darkon, since I've run games in that Domain before. Some of the new stuff for the setting seems like it does stand out but I'm not so happy with the lore changes.

It’s ultimately a very, very bleak and cynical setting that has it baked into the fundamental core of the setting that there are no happy endings and your character will either end up dead, having accomplished nothing, or twisted into something you, the player, don’t even recognize or want anything to do with, generally accomplishing less than nothing as they’ve instead become yet another part of the overall problem.

So as I said, it’s a very depressing, very cynical setting that’s not for everyone, or most well-adjusted people. I will grant you 40k is very much the same, but 40k can get away with it because 1) it’s upfront and very open about being extremely, cartoonishly, grimdark. And 2) it supplements this with gratuitously over-the-top weapons and armor that’s gonna hit you with a near-lethal dose of testosterone. Point is, you’re neither being blindsided, and at least you’re gonna have a fun time on your character’s fall into damnation.

Like unless we're playing Necromunda hivescum or something, the setting still tries to make and pastiche your characters actions, even if theyre just a lowly guardsman, as heroic and valiant (even if they may be largely irrelevant.)
Ravenlofts problem is that it really loves to rub the players face in the fact that nothing they do matters. It underlines it over and over to the point where it pushes any normal person into the "Why even bother" mindset.
Meanwhile in 40K, there's a sense that you belong to something bigger, so even if your stuff "technically doesnt matter" you can still feel like a hero, even if its just those in your immediate sphere of influence.

The amount of stupid Rocks Fall You Die levels of bullshit in that campaign is backbreaking. Id never let a new player within 50 miles of that campaign with just how much the DM has to overcommunicate not to do something because otherwise the party will fucking explode.

Your point about the NPCs is also 100% on point. Theyre so fucking unlikable and shitty that it quickly pushes the party to not give a single fuck because why would you bother helping assholes who will just as quickly sell you out to Strahd? Its also infuriating how Ireena becomes an MMO style "Game Mandated Escort Mission" and you have to spend most of the campaign with her on a fucking child leash otherwise you lose.

And yeah, like you said, Strahd sucks. The old lore, though a bit campy, is actually kinda funny and more enjoyable, because he has motivations outside of being an incel (and my GM got really bitthurt everytime we openly reffered to le coll and edgy vampire as such). I like some of his possible motivationa in the old one more, they included escaping Barovia himself by body swapping with someone, making an artifact to survive sunlight, or finding and destroying the sunsword before you found it.
Way more fun than a case of Cosmic Oneitis.

Like, it's not even a matter of "I went into the campaign not expecting it to be a gothic horror", I brought the most gothic horror character possible, a scholarly dhampir who searched in nature and in the "highest spheres" an answer to his cursed existence and found peace in the fact that in the great scheme of things he was an acceptable, if not bizarre coincidence.

Barovia did not challenge any belief of his nor made him feel bad in the slightest about his vampiric condition, the horrors there had nothing to do with vampires, they had to do with the fact that Strahd genuinely fucking sucked, there was even hype from my character thinking there might be some absolute 5D chess from some incredibly complex and ancient being and instead it was all about some woman. For a guy who more or less underwent Lovecraft character levels of "we're minuscule specs in a dark universe", it felt so irrelevant and pathetic he just felt bad at the idea he got trapped in a planar bear trap by the saddest of undead simps.

If anything the average Barovian made him think "some people really are just sacks of blood to be consumed, and they're not even tasteful as a drink, because Strahd has zero taste and can't even keep his own cattle clean".

I don't see any Critical injuries that low any of your Attributes, anon.

The ultimate fact of the matter is, within the RAW game balance, most enemies can't beat 14+1d10 roll consistently; Even Bosses like Pyro have a 50% chance of beating you with their base 14 attack.

Unless you make every enemy a Hardened lieutenant with a Combat number of 14, they're not very likely to hit a PC. (Which if we're honest, we were all doing that long before SOF 45 came out.)

The fact of the matter is, within the core book, the heaviest armor the players can afford at character creation is the Flak jacket, which is -4 to REF, DEX, and MOV.

For a SP which is still easily pierced by regular enemies (who all carry 4d6 and 5d6 weapons) this makes heavier armor seem like a total noob trap to anyone playing for the first time.

This simply isn't a good introduction to the heavier armor sets, because they just feel like you're taking chip damage while spinning a 1 armed bandit till you get hit with a critical injury, and play like a pussy.

While your friends get to reenact Hardboiled.

I crossed my wires. Seriously Wounded will reduce your Evasion base but won't prevent you from evading. I also actually presumed that not having sufficient Move would prevent you from dodging an explosion, but actually the rules don't say that either.

Anything else that penalizes your actions will apply to your evasion check however and means that you are at higher risk of being hurt whenever you get hurt, which is a kind of downward spiral that is suboptimal for characters relying on successful checks. Even moderately improving armor can reduces that downward spiral and at certain levels of enemy skill will not even increase enemy hit percentages to terribly much.

Yeah it’s not a system designed for visiting so many planes just once, but you’d think someone on the design team would suggest changing their approach.
I think the best keyword of the last few (-UB)sets has been blight probably. It’s an interesting “cost” to tack onto normal cards to justify reducing their mana value. Incredibly powerful in -1/-1 decks of course.
Other than that I don’t even know. Warp is good, I fucking love warping in Starwinder and telling people it says I draw for each damage dealt to face and not for each creature that connected. But again, so few cards printed with it that are worth playing and we all know when we’ll next see warp in a set…

I tried to make it work too, but skeletal soldier's "also, you cannot Special Summon during the turn you activate either of this card's effects, except Insect, Plant, or Reptile monsters" means you either stick to RIP end board pieces, or you give up on what is pretty much the best ragnaraika card.

And that's not the only issue, evil seed is not searchable nor you can bridge to it with mitsurugi (plant link can do it with jasmine), but you can alleviate this issue somewhat by maxing out seed and bloom, and also running as many lonefire blossom as you want. The issue with this however is that you always want aramasa to take the normal summon (it can also be manju/lamia, depends on how much of an oldfag/monstergirl fucker you are), because it leads to the 3 ritual snakes, 3 level 4 bodies and either purification or another copy of prayers. Evil seed only leads to stag sovereign/chain coils and hunting dance.
Another issue ragnaraika has, is that in order to special summon evil seed, you need a discard. And it has to be a RIP card, it can't just be a random handtrap. If you start with bloom instead, you will need TWO discards.

Mind you, i'm not saying that ragnaraika is bad, it's actually a good engine in traptrix because that deck tends to die if their normal summon gets negated, so tossing a random traptrix to special summon seed and get 2 extra interactions out of it is a fair trade. It's also a great starter in plant link, a 60 card pile that has been fine tuned to get the most out of DRNM and set up a nearly unbreakable board. Mitsurugi has better things to do with all the bodies it shits out.

If you have more exceptions than rules, then the rule ceases to exist. Those baselines are important to maintain the tone, and you can do a lot of interesting things while still falling well within the "typical" range of a clan's behavior.

When filling out city positions I always ask myself if I actually have a good reason to deviate from the default or not, just to make sure I'm not going against the norm for its own sake. "Is the Prince a Ventrue? If not, why? Is the Sheriff a Brujah or Gangrel? If not, why?" that kind of stuff.

Players, how do you write you character backstories? Are there any patterns you've noticed in your writing.
I noticed that when I'm making a backstory, I have a habit to make the inciting incident something sad, even if its not super tragic. I would like to hear how others managed to give their characters goal while having them stay happy.

Did you also buy all your safety equipment? Babystep your way into using the thing by taking time to set up a proper work area and ventilation system. Silicone mats, gloves, paper towels, respirator, etc.

Once you do that, nearly every printer I've worked with comes pre-loaded with simple demo models out of the box, so you'd just need to turn it on, follow the instructions, add your resin, and fire off a print. Calibration can be a pain in the ass for some older machines, but default settings will generally work for most resins and most files. Worst fuck-up you can actually do with a resin printer is accidentally starting a new print before you completely cleaned off the build plate and then crunching some resin against the bottom of the resin tank and screen. As long as you don't do that by keeping your build plate clean and making sure there's no stray bits floating in the resin, you'll be fine.

Challenges are a good mechanic in theory imo, the writers of 3.0 just got completely lost in the fucking sauce and overcomplicated the shit out of it for very little real gain.

Eh, I dont think turn based scoring is the root of the problem. My friends and I have been playing with homebrew missions that include some with turn-based scoring for like years now and its great. The real issue is more that 40k rulebook missions have just always been utter trash. In 4th and 5th I think every mission is just the same "move your units on to the objective at the very last turn and you win lol". 6th edition only had one single good mission, the relic. The rest were trash.

If it helps you theme the mission, its easy to explain away as some sort of time critical thing like a data uplink, or AA emplacements, where by the end of the battle its too late. I actually think its the opposite, where holding objectives at the end of the last turn is harder to theme. It needs you to make up some event that brings about the end of the fight, and unless that involves annihilation of the enemy forces as part of the theme its a little hard to rationalize why everyone just stopped fighting.

But, I think even worse is when you combine progressive scoring with fixed turn length. Being able to calculate that you have lost by the half way point is super lame. A combination of random game length and both sorts of missions is best.

I've found a good way to run progressive scoring objectives is to give each objective a set points value which 'drains' as points are granted to a player. So whichever player holds it each turn earns 10% of its VP value and whoever hols it at the end of the game gets what's left. It encourages fights early to take as much from the objectives as you can but also rewards the player holding one the end of the game with big vp boosts to help prevent foregone conclusions.

Yah, to me that just sounds like a bit of a slog and I would get anal about trying to get across what I need to just right. But does sound manageable for someone less neurotic than I. That reminds me of some of the AI dungeon stuff I use to fiddle around with during covid. Which also overwhelmed me.

I agree. I like the system itself, But I remember Crawford games in general are layed out unintuitively. Like, also in scarlet heros, the spells I think were layed out alphabeticly first instead of by level, like, wtf? who is going to remember that the poison cone spell is called "Ganglions feted wind" or something more than they remember it was a level 2 spell.
