How would you make them more enticing?
You already said it all with "little folk". They're "silly funny little dudes". Nobody takes them seriously, they're basically joke races. What portrayals have you seen of Halflings, Gnomes, etc that weren't some combination of "Aww, the widdle guy's doing human stuff, how epic!" or "Woah, that's really impressive for one of THOSE!"Even when the writer is trying to present one well, it amounts to "he did something as well as a human might, despite being wor- different". Always either some twee fondness angle, or some overturning expectations thing, or both.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people's suspension of disbelief just can't deal with the idea of small races being able to pull off basic adventuring feats physically.
