I feel like you can kinda go by the vibe to determine if an ability is evil or not, though I'd probably still chek if there is a good outsider or something with a similar ability.
Like a sanctified Vampire for example I could see the Create Spawn being lost, but things like Dominate and Children of the Night be retained

just like with a good cast of characters, I always hate it when we pad out the roster with one too many players, and the perfect social chemistry is ruined in search of a more "balanced" party.

I think it's more interesting for a party to be missing something, and have to adapt through improvisation. like if the party didn't have a healer, and the martial became a battlefield surgeon who made potions with local herbs or something.

Meh, I think 4 is perfect. 5 is at the limit and 6 only works if everyone knows what they are doing. 3 works but you requires everyone to make it for it to work. 5 makes it harder for the GM and can overwhelm the GM and make things too easy or too hard for some players. (Someone minmaxing can wipe low level foes. Where someone more support might be fucked and fully dependent on avoiding combat.)

I'm kinda split on this one. One of the most memorable campaigns I played in had 3 PCs and flowed pretty well. But you kinda need a meat shield, an ambulance, a spell slinger and a thief for the thief related stuff.
>>
>>96803374
Depends on the game. I've ran and played games where three is a perfect number. I think 4 is best for some games, and 5 is best for some other games. 2 is usually too few, and 6 is usually starting to get too crowded.

So, now you need to decide. Do you close your eyes to what you've seen and go back to sleep? Or do you come with this psycho burnout and do the impossible against the unbelievable and keep the future at bay for another day? What's it going to be? In or out?

Yeah? You dumb shit.

Mixed feelings. Has a good start but for some reason does the same retarded 20 year skip that Impossible Landscapes also does. The concept for Bast and it's relationship with Nyarlathotep is good but there is a 99% chance your players will never figure it out. Caleb's seething at the orange man and ICE is just the tip of the iceberg.
>>
>>96824594
It's a cool idea, it's a dumb game session.

>>96824713
>20 year skip
I hate that too - if you want to do that, you pretty much have to explain to to your players ahead of time, and then none of the before feels real, even though that should be the part(s) that inform the development of the character.

Having said that, as someone able to just ignore the politics sperging, the scenarios are good and the campaign is decent.
>>
>>96824844
I don't like that the political sperging leaks into almost all the characters, to the point that a bunch of them don't just feel like strawmen that Caleb has been winging about, but are just massive stereotypes with not even the slightest depth.

Also I'm wondering how Bast in DG will tie in with Dreamlands stuff like the Cats of Ulthar? Actually now that I think about it, has DG even done anything with the Dreamlands in a long while?

Popular Choices for Games:

>Mutants & Masterminds
Currently the most played one, uses a d20 resolution for everything, has powers building and rules for tactical combat.

>Marvel TSR/ FASERIP
Classic Supers game from the 80s, still has a lot of fans and various retro-clones. Uses a d100 with an universal resolution table to decide the degree of success, has random character generation and abstract rules for powers and combat.

What did you think of the cyborg monkeys, lol? And is it satisfying to see Luthor get his comeuppance or what?
>>
>>96824366
The twitter monkeys were gold and I want to see Lex come back in the sequel with the green and purple anti-Superman suit.

Tbh I'm writing a superhero novel and while the protag at a glance is not necessarily a Superman clone she is the sort of stand in for Superman in the setting. I love Supes for being kind of a dork with a heart of pure gold.

How do I leave one shot hell?
I've been running one shots once a week. I enjoy it, I like trying systems and modules. There's a ton of stuff I wanted to try running, there's still a lot more. But now I don't know how to run a proper campaign.

My main issues is how to judge a good way to keep things interesting in the long run. I don't think I can make each session important while also saving stuff for the long run, but when I try to stretch it and just enjoy whatever happens in the session people end up getting bored and abandoning. When I do find players that seem to get into it I burn out super fast, I start dreading the sessions and not wanting to go on. And I'm sure it reflects in the quality of the games.

Is there like a training regime I could do? Or a really good modules that will make everyting click in my head?
I'm willing to lower myself to the level of watching a youtuber, but if you're gonna sugest that make it worth it.

If you go to write a book, you can't do it in one session. Same goes for DMing an epic. It'll take time, sometimes it'll be hard, but you can do this, I believe in you.

I'm around, people gave some good advice and I went as specific as I'm willing to go so I don't have much to reply.

Someone said earlier that part of issue is players not wanting a big campaign. It happened to the one where I was a player this year, two of us kept trying to push for it but we kept losing people on the way. Unlike wanting to play now you have to keep wanting to play over and over for months and months. It can be a big ask.

>>96811723
that pic always makes me chuckle
I was trying Hull Breach, it's a compilation of one shots and tools to mix them together, for MoSh. I might have missed the boat for the right timing to switch from the one shot adventures to the 2-3shots tho.
>>
>>96820836
No real experience with Mothership but I'm under the impression its suited for short campaigns. If its still a thing your group likes and has had a few runs of you could try a module outside of the compilation. Gradient Descent looked interesting.
There's a longer form seeming bit for it called Cloud Empress, more fantastical.
Could carry on with the rules light indi theme and try a bit of Into the Odd or one of the nsr games with a single dungeon module generally sticking with that dungeon & town combination. It can stay focused on that module or can turn into a larger campaign if desired.
Could do a short PBTA that's suited to a genre your group likes. They tend towards 5-10 sessions in my experience but there's a wack of them.
>>
>>96803217
no prep DMing.
If you're playing a system that's too bloated for no preparation then there's nothing else you can do. You're always going to be beholden to your players.

>No, Dwarves and Dark Elves were two different races even in Norse myth.

Wrong.

>Since the Prose Edda describes the dökkálfar as being subterranean dwellers, they may be dwarfs under another name, in the opinion of a number of scholars such as John Lindow.[11][12]

>Svartálfaheimr ("world of black-elves") appears in the Prose Edda twice,[3][7] in each case as the place where certain dwarfs can be found to be living:[8] In Gylfaginning 33, the "world of black-elves" is where the dwarfs are sought by the gods to craft the fetter Gleipnir to bind the wolf Fenrir.[9] And in Skáldskaparmál, 39, the "world of black-elves" is where Loki encounters the dwarf Andvari.[10]

Not canon.
>>
>>96817813
Sure, to clarify I guess I should have called them "rules puzzles" instead of tactical situations. For an example, I'm looking at K&W, pages 17 to 19. It's about Intrigues, which are extended contests between the PC organization ("Domain") and an enemy Domain. A Domain has four numerically rated skills and three defenses, and each domain turn (could be anywhere from an hour to a week), each Domain can take a limited number of actions. So far all well & good. What do you do with an action? You can choose to attempt, for example, to raise one of your defenses or lower an enemy's defense. "It's up to the players and the GM to imagine how this plays out, by translating skill tests and their effects into game terms." The way play is supposed to work in an RPG is the players tell the GM what they want their characters to do, and the GM selects the correct rule to determine the result. K&W puts the cart before the horse in the same way the D&D 4e skill challenges did: for Colville, the purpose of describing in-game actions is to have an excuse to invoke the rules, when the rules are supposed to be a thing only used when necessary to resolve in-game actions. The tactical puzzle games are fun, but they are not the ruleset for a RPG.
>>
>>96796099
>>96796196
>is liking a more narrative style of playing the wrong way to have fun?
It is when you're also advocating for running player-motivated west marches with highly tactical combat.
What's the point of being player motivated if the DM is secretly still railroading a story?
What's the point of tactics if combats still succeed or fail purely on the whim of the "director."

There's a reason old games used to use the term Referee, Matt.
Yes players vs DM is bad, but the game is supposed to be players vs the game, and you the impartial narrator moving the pieces for the fictional enemy based on what the enemy would realistically do because they can't reach out of the game and do it themselves.
If the players beat those enemies, they earned it by the sweat of their brow, the skin of their teeth, and the cut of their jib. If they fail, well, it's a dangerous world full of monsters, if adventuring was safe everyone would get filthy stinking loaded do it.
The entire narrative should be predicated on the results of the players actions, in response to situations in the world you describe to them, be that "here's the map and some local rumors where do you want to explore" or "this is an evil guy's plans, what do you intend to do about it."

>>96798158
He's the author of Draw Steel and one of the bigger names in D&Dtubers. He also did some interviews of Mearls with Mercer during the early 5e days. He is actually slightly bigger than a literal who unfortunately. He's not a bad source for the hyper-basic stuff, but if you try to watch his liveplays it's obvious he's not good at anything much more advanced than just getting people to a point where they'll actually run. But the early level DMIng advice works, and he presents himself as a fake grog, so people assume his bad ideas are gospel. Playing a few months of the tail end of AD&D 2e when you were 8 does not count as real grog-dom Matt.
>>
>>96821154
thanks for conceding LOL
>>
>>96823143
No? The scenario you described is the GM using the rules to resolve player actions, just like you say he should. Did you mean to use a different example?

Maybe look at Mutants in the Now/Next. It is essentially a retroclone of TMNT and Other Strangeness. You can build anything from hyperintelligent versions of an animal to essentially a human with a few animal qualities, depending on how you spend your points.

>>96817666
This looks essentially like a retelling of the Monkey King and A Journey to the West. I recommend looking at Monkey, the Roleplaying Game of the Journey to the West.

>>96819599
That's going to be rough. You might be best served by a game like GURPS or Hero System, where you could tailor everything to your needs, or a bit simpler with something like OVA or Tri-Stat where you could use some abilities to represent cover, robotic abilities, etc. First, give The Robotic Age by True in One a look. I cannot recall if it has cover mechanics or not, but I think it might provide much of what you are after, and it has several expansions, too, if you find you enjoy it.

I'm going to be running the Cabin Fever module for my game group.
Any advice with this particular module or with refereeing Cyberpunk 2020 in general? I'm pretty new to refereeing and to the system itself.

Also any cool ideas or modules that I could use in a future session welcome. So far I'm trying to make a more chill campaign that's more about fleshing out the setting rather than making some epic plot about saving the world or something along those lines.

The key to running cyberpunk is to get right to the edge of everything going bad. Look for ways to make it feel like that a gunfight might break out at any moment. My favorite trick is to make it seem like two NPCs have a simmering beef and one of them is slightly unhinged.

First of all, congratulations on choosing the best Cyberpunk game there is. For me, as a long-term Cyberpunk 2020 ref, the best advice I can give you is to have a certain vision of how you want the setting to be, and to know the system really well. This way, you're always ready to improvise. Also, know your players well (what do they like, what do they don't like...).
