Graphics are not the only issue with this game. Much as I liked it in my youth, I increasingly find fault with it now. Westwood's Blade Runner is at its best when it's recycling scenes and characters from the film. When it introduces its own characters, they tend to conflict with the established, grim tone, as with the standup comedian in the club, or the equally wacky gun shop guy. You don't see dorks like these in the film.

The only good original character is Lucy, because in hindsight it's very funny that the game allows you to elope with a girl of fourteen and presents this as one of its happy endings. But there's a problem with Lucy. She's supposed to be a sympathetic character – possibly the only sympathetic character here – but she does something that makes no sense, and lessens my sympathy. The opening scene shows that Mr. Runciter expects Lucy to provide sexual favours as part of her job, and that Lucy hates this. The question is: why does she go to her place of work dressed like a half-naked goth prostitute if she doesn't want the attentions of the dirty old man who runs the place? If Lucy is supposed to be using her feminine charms to take advantage of Runciter, then she should have been written as that cynical kind of character, and not as the innocent waif she is.

Just picked up a Nintendo 64 off of Craigslist about an hour ago. Put it in my garage and came out to plug it in. Noticed it had a weird smell to it and it was very dirty so I opened it up and found a bunch of dead bugs inside of it. I think they have all passed since but this is pretty fucking disgusting. Should I try to clean this up and use it? I'm pretty grossed out by it. I've since moved out back to my truck because I don't want bedbugs or cockroaches or whatever this is inside my home.

The way the game is interacted with now is way different than it was back then. No maps. No concepts of what power ups even existed. So from screen one, it was non stop continuous practice on how to do platforming and approach enemies. And because of the backtracking, and mysteries, you were going back and forth over everything multiple times, to the point where you got better, and more and more of the map was an area you could gain energy just from traversing. It's a different attitude to now where you expect to be able to fill up your e-tank every time. And also remember the final score is based on time. You would get better and faster.

The real difference maker was of course the screw attack, which was not an obvious weapon to start with..

It's amazing how everyone forgets that the franchise was considered dead until Metroid Prime revived it. The only reason they gave it to Retro Studios was precisely because the franchise was dead so there was no harm if they fucked it up.

Or rather than "forget", they don't know, because they were still young when MP was made and assume it was always like that. Super Metroid only gained its current status after MP was made and thanks to emulation with the usual trend of "new game comes out -> I'll pretend I'm more knowledgeable by talking about the old game in that series even though I didn't care about it before said new game".

It seems like ever Metroid game since Fusion and Prime has been a step down. Prime 2 not as good as Prime 1, Prime 3 was bad, then Other M was crap. After that I had no faith in the series anymore and my 3DS broke, so I never got to play the others. For some strange reason it seems like they keep trying to force melee combat into Metroid since Other M. I didn't have high expectations for Prime 4, but when I saw the motorcycle that was enough to kill any interest I had, even before everyone was crying over the soiboy.

Remaster is widescreen so there are more enemies at once on the screen but each invidivual enemy tends to be slower and less of a threat

The game is both interesting and flawed.
It's almost like a 16-bit survival horror game, but the imprecise aiming, enemies that jump on you without giving you time to react, the short time limit, and the fact that you have to find exits that aren't marked in any way make the overall experience quite frustrating.
I haven't tried the SNES version yet, which is a different game.

Ones I'm currently playing:

Autistic as hell, grindy as fuck in the early game, playing it on "Expert" (original DS difficulty) because I'm not a pussy, but it gets better once you've gotten a few floors in.

This is exactly the game I want to play. Story-heavy, not garbage, interesting-but-not-too-autistic mechanics, everything looks and feels pretty cool. Anything else like this, especially but not necessarily cyberpunk/mecha/sci-fi?

I can't really say honestly. I played the original Switch release first when it came out, but got bored halfway through the game and quit for a few years until the rerelease. I went CoC again when Vengeance came out, but played CoV right after beating the game for the first time.
CoV has a more memorable story for sure, but it kind of builds upon the CoC story elements so you'll get more out of it if you played the original story first.

Since you already like SMT I'd say go for CoC, but if you think you're only gonna do a single playthrough maybe just skip straight to CoV.

Somehow this year I became a DQfag and played 1-6 and 8 (owned 9 when it was out and played it to death) this year. I should probably look into the Monsters games because I'm a Pokemon/MegaTenfag at heart.
4 is neat and probably the game that I'd recommend someone jump into the series with. Play the DS version as the NES version forces your non-Hero party members to be AI controlled and you don't want to play a game where your healer is obsessed with insta-kill spells that never work.
