Various AD&D/OSR threads are full on cancer with autism shitfights and gay nonsense.I am looking to run a megadungeon game for some people who never played anything older than 3.5. I've played some of them but it was a while back myself, and I've been mostly doing retroclones for the last little while. So what I'm asking is to get some takes on AD&D, B/X, AD&D 2e, and BECMI. Names: Rule Complication vs usefulness, ease of learning, strengths/weaknesses, and ease of acquiring physical copies of the book(s). I don't need any modules and minimizing splats is ideal, so if you feel like any of these "cannot be enjoyed" without X extra book(s) please include that information as well.
Can a martial based character be the BBEG?
>>97699742>Okay then they aren't BBEGs.That other anon is kind of missing the point with his real world comparison. Nobunaga could be considered a real world BBEG but he probably wasn't that more skilled than the average soldier when it comes to fighting. For a purely Marital BBEG to work you'd need a ton of support for him. People that protect him and genuinely believe in his cause. His kingdom would need to be designed to prevent scry-and-fry tactics, he'd probably have casters putting up dozens of contingency spells, and would be loaded with magic items of all kinds. Honestly a BBEG Martial should be a threat in the same way old DnD Martials were, it wasn't their personal fighting ability though that was very good but the people that followed them.Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own. Even if you gave him the Sword of Perfect Anti-magic he's always 1 round away from being just a guy if someone manages to take it.
>>97705171>Sadly with the way that DnD is setup there's just no way to have the Martial BBEG be a credible threat on his own.Exactly. In fact, with the way magic works in D&D, it's hard to take a campaign in it seriously at all. The magic is more ridiculous than in Harry Potter.
>>97705171You don't need to build NPC enemies around the same restrictions of PCs.
>>97699742>>97705171>>97709728>we can't have presidents because a guy with a stealth bomber would just kill them
>>97709914That's not what we're trying to say. The fantasy of what a BBEG is supposed to be is basically a one man army with also legions of minions at his disposal right? You get visions of characters like Sauron or the Lich King, even if you singled them out they would win the 1v1+the few guys you brought. But both of them have absurd magic and artifacts at their disposal. They're not really 'martials'.A singled out martial BBEG would just get action economy'd to death and pelted with so many save or suck spells it would probably be embarrassing. That's why I was making the point he'd need a lot of support like the real world leaders you're thinking of. Or the use of a lot of magic artifacts. Or you'd need to make him a Hercules tier demigod with such ridiculous strength and resilience. Possibly some combination of these three.
You awake after being transported through the fantasy magic of thread prompt to a brainjack that connects your collective /k/ heads to an alien swarm. The swarms had sent down an invading army of runny and bitey monstersthat ran at a chokepoints and got blown up at a thousand to one rates. This Hivemind that created the swam has decided to consult YOU /k/ on the creation of a better version of it's alien gribbly horde. What 'kinds' of monsters are useful basically? Your limitations are only that you should try to err on the side of sticking to what is physically possible to have exist irl or at least not literally have out and out superpowers baked into the design. Just as a point of reference you should err on the side of the Arachnids from the above imaged gif as being about the most exotic and fantastical of biology-as tech that you're going to be able to get away with.>You can spitball up up better a better fighting doctrine for your tryhard version of a space swarm then pic related right?
>>64968618Thread-twin post on /k/
>>97705851Well you need to (mission) kill humans. The best way to do that is toxins. You have lots to choose from, i reccomend digestive enzymes and peptase since you already have them for free just by being a carbon based life form. Now you need a small winged creature with hydroponic fangs, ideally opposed to penetrate textiles, that can seek body heat. Have a reproductive grub-phase and a terminal swarm phase triggered by a pheramone-signal bioform and you're basically there. You can have them lie dormant and saturate the entire biosphere with living toxic death zones. That should cover everything unless the humans start Landing entire dome habs and purging the entire biosphere, in which case you're fighting a cardachev scale civ with glorified insects so GG, go symbioticIf you can swing a mind controlling parasite maybe try that too, good odds some /d/egenerate takes you off world and you get two planets for the price of one
>>97705851 Taking over 'stuff', that isn't just consuming biomass even if it's done temporarily or by spontaneously arming themselves is just such a no- brainer method of bolstering a swarm's force. They would be well rewarded by having some bioforms on hand in the reserve for taking over vehicles and buildings. Drive a million fucking sandnigger Technical trucks up to the front with trailers carrying the big slow stompy ones. There can be little tinkerer guys who scavenge around a bit for weapons off bodies or vehicles to quickfix/hijack to be driven. There’s not actually anything but an intelligence gap and a bit of working hands that holds back any swarm of space bugs from taking over the convoys of trains and trucks, ferrying normal-ass artillery with shells for the front line guns that the swarm is itself using. If that is to grandiose then at leaset have littlescavanger tinkerbugs be going around taking grenades off corpses or dig up mines and replanting that stuff for on some defence. Why not have all the abandoned planes in the places they overrun get some bug pilots inside to 9/11 themselves at the nearest fortresses.
If every bug is linked to the hive mind, tiny earth insect sized spy bugs would be unstoppable. It would be so easy to get eyes and ears just about everywhere, and they'd all be disposable. Also loved the bugs tactics from the Starship Troopers and Armor books. Have a massive swarm seeded on a planet and waiting under a battlefield. Maybe about a fifth of the swarm are actually warriors. If workers and warriors look exactly the same, the workers can be both a meat should and distraction for humans while the actual warriors sneak through the swarm to deal a killing blow or get a shot off from an unseen angle. The chaos caused by a swarm of hundreds of thousands of bugs erupting from the ground direct beneath the feet of any human platoon would be pretty good too.

Everybody feeding the trolls again, that are not comfortable with one horror/gore element, where they draw the X card.Let us turn back how you made it work and what great campaigns you ran with it?I watched the tales of blood and stone podcast and it was glorious. Sadly ended in the middle. And I think a good adventure timeline would be:>Dark Deeds in Last Hope > The Knife in Your Hand > Necessary Sacrifices > The Apple of Her > Saving Face > Call of the Necromancer > The Gorgon's Tears > The Man Who Fell to Urth > Heart of Winter > The Darkness in Shadowturrets > Cabaret of the Grotesque.but what can be a good shadow to all of this?
An important question to ask when determining if DLE games are for you is'Do you enjoy campaigns that won't finish before you retire, and combats that run over several sessions (while your character is unconscious)?'If so, stick with PF/DnD.Otoh, if you like fast, dirty, deadly fights and campaigns that will be done by summer, then Demon Lord might work for you.A campaign runs from level 0 to level 10.There is no XP to track - the campaign structure is designed so that PCs level up after each adventure. If you want to stretch it out you could vary this at your table, do two adventures per level, etc.But I don't know why you would want to do that, there are so many character options, just do a new campaign with new PCs (or play something else). Most of the modules are standalone, but there are some published campaign frames.Of note, there is a official Freeport campaign, so if you have played Freeport before, you could play it again to get a before/after feel for how the Demon Lord engine affects play.
>>97706154When people say shit like this I genuinely can't tell if they like the game or not.
>>97706154>An important question to ask when determining if DLE games are for you is>'Do you enjoy hyperbolic strawman statements that may or may not loosely apply to the worlds roleplaying game?'if so, stick with PF/DnD.>Otoh, if you like buzzwords, then Demon Lord might work for you. When you catch yourself thinking and writing like a marketing bot you should really start considering suicide. It's the only moral thing left to do.
>>97705865>>Dark Deeds in Last Hope > The Knife in Your HandDid exactly this, worked great.>The Man Who Fell to UrthGiven one of the more likely endings for this is a TPK or being stuck in the Void, I used this as the finale. It also meant I could use the Looming Star as Shadow to foreshadow the whole thing

>>97709827I'm a big fan of using the Dual-Weapon Warrior archetype on bombers. It grants you access to Double Slice (which allows you to make two Strikes with two melee weapons held in different hands, both at your full attack bonus), then Dual-Weapon Thrower, which lets you do the same thing with two thrown weapons. This relies on the Double Brew class feature that alchemists get at level 9, so it's something you'd build towards, but once you've got the requisite feats your combat rotation becomes:>Double Brew to creature two bombs.>Double Slice to throw one bomb at your full bonus, then the second with a -2 penalty (since it's not Agile) rather than the -5 you'd normally take. You're effectively spending your remaining action each round to enable Double Slice and make your second Strike +3 more accurate than it would otherwise be. It's the best thing I've found to spend that action on as an alchemist. Also: I'd absolutely recommend Demolitionist for bomber alchemists in a Free Archetype game. Bombers require a ton of feats just to remain basically functional in combat, making them desperately feat-starved. The fact that Demolitionist contains not one but two of those must-take feats (Expanded Splash and Directional Bombs) means that you can offload those two to your Free Archetype feat slots and free up some space for more alchemist feats. The downside is that you get them later than you otherwise would, but I think it's worth it. It might be too late for him to do this, but putting off those feats until you can get them via Demolitionist at levels 8/10/12 is probably the best value you're going to get out of your FA slots. You could also go Demolitionist earlier, but that locks you into taking some of the other, less useful Demolitionist feats due to the Dedication rules. There's nothing you really need in the archetype any earlier than Directional Bombs at level 8.
