Miniatures suck, are too expensive, take too long to paint, and don't do what minis need to do in tabletop RPGs -- THEY AREN'T MODULAR.

If you start a campaign and your fighter begins with studded leather and a shortsword, you'll probably have splint by level 3 and a great-axe by level 4.

And now your miniature sucks and doesn't look like your character. So instead we need MODULAR minis - like LEGO block minifigures.

I have hundreds of cheap ripoff LEGO minifigs for my 5e 2024 D&D campaign now. They have tradeable armors, weapons, helmets, hair, pants, shields, etc. And the badguy monsters for the campaign are massive and huge (and cheap).

Pic is a $2 custom knight. If my players kill one, they can take the armor and wear it on their minifig, and now their minifigure looks completely different.

(I made a video on the topic but the mods don't want videos posted in /tg/ for some strange reason).

I don't blame you! I'm running 5e because that's what players play but let me tell you, converting both 3e and AD&D material to 5e can be heartbreaking - but in opposite ways which kind of speaks to 5e being a decent middle ground.

When I convert 3e material to 5e it "flattens" it. It's common for monsters in 3e to be heavily modified with templates attached to them, special attacks and all kinds of shit. Monster advancement isn't even a thing in 5e. Don't even get me started on what happens when we convert a classed NPC. I find myself just using Goodman's "Reincarnated" conversion philosophy of taking a statblocked NPC and pasting on the flavor. Works okay I guess.

With converting AD&D material, basically the *opposite* is the case. Monsters are summarized in a couple lines of plain text and clearly meant to be overcome in combats lasting about 10 minutes (while still having high stakes). I really find myself pushing to have anything remotely approaching that kind of pace in 5e, and that pace is pretty important if you're going to get anywhere in dungeon crawls.
>>
>>96629336
Nice, thanks for the link, searchable is a big feature.

>Horned Society
One of my favorite evil organizations from before the Greyhawk Wars. Always wished that TSR had done with them, like make them a full-fledged magical Legion of Doom with unique villain characters representing all the variations of evil alignments out there, a sort of Bizarro Circle of Eight. Which is, I think, kind of what Gygax had once intended for them but never fleshed out.

Iuz wiping them out off-screen and turning all that into one giant evil empire was boring and lame.

For, what, thirty years now I've wanted to do a City of Greyhawk campaign but been reluctant to on account of not being quite dedicated enough to sit down and do a full cover to cover read on multiple sourcebooks while taking notes on the specific avenues I'm thinking to tie together - only to need to do it over and over again in response to players taking agency and redirecting the story, which I dearly love and believe to be the heart of D&D *but* like I said I just don't have the time and dedication to repeatedly fully scour and notate - and I got soured on developing purely original material long ago by players shortcutting tons of my prep (which is parallel to how I would feel if they cut off countless hours of note taking)

But now, in the futuristic year 2025 I can have all my books (and all the books I wanted but never picked up) in digital format and searchable (once I run them through Acrobat anyway) and it's actually *enjoyable* to me to sit down and play "Hm, I wonder how I can tie in lore and add even more complexity based on what they've recently been up to" and *it's actually enjoyable to me in and of itself*.

Maybe I'm weird or an egotist or whatever but it also is much easier for me to just sort of dump out my thoughts here in a conversational way than it is to actually write notes - although I generally have these threads open in a tab behind my screen during play to reference my own thoughts after I've been distracted by the immediacy of dungeon delving.

At the end of last session they just peeked into picrel, the "Inverted Ziggurat" and for whatever reason they seem less intimidated by it than by the floating stream with the kayaks - something about being carried through a solid stone wall feeling like a one-way trip. Assuming they busy themselves with *that* room, I think Pietain and his thug, the wrestling champion Rashif Iqbal (explicitly a topknot wearing eunuch) plus some redshirted gladiators will be getting San Spite
>>
>>96632284
>got soured on developing purely original material long ago by players shortcutting tons of my prep
That's just "Being a DM 101", anon.

The interesting part is presenting moral choices to the players and seeing how their PCs react. For example, give some opportunity in your game for one of the members of the the Horned Society to present a PC with a choice that makes them think: "Hmm, this kinda makes sense, maybe these 'evil guys' aren't so wrong after all..." and see what happens.

The Circle of Eight chose neutrality because they knew that the extremism of Good and Evil and Law and Chaos destroys world. Can your players see that?
>>
>>96632517
Oh, yeah we're pretty far past that. Although nominally being on the side of "good" is what ultimately is presumed to be the motivation behind progressing through the extant material they as a group are pretty morally dubious - which is very, very common among "modern" players.

They met Warduke a LONG time ago, probably close to this time last year and he helped them fight against some giants who were thralls of Elemental Fire then investigated the Eclavdra connection they were dragging their heels on which ultimately led to him going and blowing up the first Temple of Elemental Evil just as Robilar canonically did, completely releasing Zuggtmoy and pissing off Iuz pretty good in the process.

Ultimately what it boils down to is that I would like to just prevent the Greyhawk Wars from ever happening which involves low key giving the players opportunity after opportunity to alter Canon in a way that will imprison or destroy Iuz. There are a ton of places where that can happen, like "Tasha" (Iggwilv's simulacrum) fully intends to capture him and is even canonically supposed to do so briefly before the PCs free him in the process of also rescuing Robilar - but they may first discover that he's actually Bilarro, which is why he's also been masquerading as Warduke and serving as a Hierarch. This is part of why I let them meet "Tasha" and develop a personal connection with her (I even made some appealing AI art of her initially materializing in the Temple of the Falcon).

Whenever I run wide open campaigns I find it useful to have "friendly rivals" for the PCs which in this campaign have come to be the LJN "evil" party, picrel. We all enjoy these iconic guys and they add a bit of a unique twist. Funnily enough Kelek is even more or less right in Expedition as an NPC in the Green Dragon - and they were already familiar with him as one of Warduke's party members. The amount of fun potential lore tie-ins is really amazing when you dive deep.

I've decided to decease my internet time and blue light exposure, buy an ebook reader, and get used to finishing the day with some reading, instead of all the other things that give me insomnia.

What /tg/-related books have you been reading anon, or what you think what other people should read too?
I've read Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit before I knew what the hell ttrpgs even were. Same with the original Dragonlance books. I was thinking of picking up Elric of Melnibone and Original Conan the Barbarian. Already read and enjoyed Eisenhorn, most of the Slayer books with Gotrek, first 1.5 of the Black Company books. And dear god I haven't read books for fun in so long, what have I been doing?

I can't stand The Name of the Wind, and I'm always shocked when people recommend it. Patrick Rothfus and Brandon Sanderson are terrible writers, and they produce wish-fulfilment garbage for dorks.
Their writing appeals to the kinds of mongrels that read light novel adaptations. To this day, The Name of the Wind is the only fantasy novel I ever sat down to read that was so bad it actually made me fucking angry. Brandon Sanderson's stuff is just bland, boring, for autists, and has no real point to any of it.
>>
>>96630989
I kinda of seen the point of the first book of TnOtW, but man the second one was so bad than it produced brain damage to me.
Same as the Winds of Truth from sanderson, so bad than in retrospect all he has done was shit.
>>
>>96630989
I stopped reading Mistborn about a third in. The action scenes felt like I was reading a comic book in novel form. Not to my tastes.
>>
>>96630989
I think Sanderson has a lot of good technical skill, but his plot and characters don't jive with me. It's sort of difficult for me to reconcile it. Like, I read through Way of Kings because I found myself consistently compelled to keep turning the page. I was never particularly bored while reading it. Yet I can't say I liked the book. I outright hated Shallan and Jasnah and I disliked how much Szeth just felt like an edgy anime character. I hated how the story was structured where it would cutaway to the parallel flashback story every time something was about to happen or, god help me, it would switch over to Shallan again. And there were all those interlude vignettes which were just paper thin excuses for more worldbuilding, which the main story was already bloated to fucking hell with.
I can think up all these problems I had with the book and I know that I felt them while I was reading, but I was possessed to finish it regardless. There has to be something about Sanderson's prose or scene building that was working. Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit and I was just energized by spite because my sister was a huge Sanderson shill and kept hassling me to read it, so I wanted to plow through it to finally shut her up.

I know making up Drawbacks sucks, but you can't have just four, especially when one is barred if you bought a perk (which itself doesn't make much sense considering that drawbacks trump perks).
>>
Guess we're doing mtg jumps now. Was there an update or something?
>>
>>96632380
I know next to nothing about MTG and its settings. Still, from a purely mechanical perspective, I think this is a good jump with a good amount of options, without any worthless peaks. However, it needs more drawbacks at the 100, 200, and possibly 600 level, or similar significant points, with perhaps a few more drawbacks at the 400 level.
>>
>>96632583
Good point. I rewrote the land section a few times, and never really touched up the basics beyond their first draft. Having two lands of two different colors is, generally, stronger than a single land of two colors, since you're drawing the same amount of mana from each land. That means basics are probably pretty undercosted relative to their power as they currently are. I was probably looking at it too much from the perspective of the card game's gameplay, where having only basics and no multicolor lands is generally bad for deckbuilding, and priced them awkwardly because of that.

>>96632603
>>96632615
Thanks for the feedback. Drawbacks are hard, and I didn't have many good ideas for them. Honestly I was also getting pretty burnt out towards the end of it, so I slacked off on them. This shit's a lot harder to do than I expected, gives me more respect for the people who make them regularly. I'll try to figure some more out.

>>96632606
The most recent MTG set was one of the worst sets in the game's entire history, and the last year has been a mess. The Duskmourn jump inspired me to try making my own.

How the fuck does this even work?
I wanted to try giving Twilight 2000 a go, but Im having a hard time finding a group and I don't feel ready yet to be a GM.
Then i noticed some people mentioning that they like playing it solo, but i don't really understand.
Isn't the whole point of this to play with people?
How do you handle being a GM controlling everything trying to kill the player if you are also the payer?
How do you handle the unravelling story of a module or a campaign as a player if you already know it as a GM?
What's really stopping you from fudging your own rolls every time so you win all the time?
Whats the point of roleplaying if you are basically mumbling by yourself?
How do you get fun out of this?
Im not really sure if I should give it a go, or instead just try to do my homework and attempt to be a GM for once.
>>
>>96632188
Consider finding a group instead of doing your taxes as a hobby.
>>
>>96632188
What's really stopping you from fudging your own rolls every time so you win all the time
because if you have half a brain you'll realise how anti fun that would be. If you want to tey solo, go with something with it baked in like ironsworn, otherwise you'd be better off joining a group. You'd ve surprised, even in rural areas, just how many people want to play ttrpgs (dnd)

Really appreciate the list, but I don't think anything here should be added to the list of Hidden Lore skills. Doesn’t seem particularly relevant to players. Regardless, thanks anon.
>>
>>96623734
Yeah, you could probably blanket most of that into "higher mysteries/Walking Ways/Psijic Endeavor". But given that there's probably only a few hundred people on Nirn at a time that spend real thought on it, I can understand cutting it.
>>
>>96625875
Ended up adding one for Higher Mysteries. Generic enough to include all sorts of things. Could you think of a specialization for things related to the Heart of Lorkhan? If it's not too much of a stretch, Higher Mysteries could maybe do.
>>
>>96626959
All this shit is heavily inter-related, especially with the Walking Ways and Psijic Endeavor, since we have seven distinct, unambiguous cases of some form of apotheosis tied directly to a Stone. One skill is probably best for covering all of your things relating to Towers, CAPITAL WORDS and other things more involved than The Monomyth. Even seemingly mundane stuff like "What happened to the Dwemer?" leads to the Heart, which leads to the Tribunal, which leads to turning the Wheel on its side, and finally to Amaranth. It all keeps pointing upward in a way that doesn't really lend itself well to specializations.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you!

It was fun when it was a player driven format. When EDH players were playing with Magic cards. But these days Magic players must play with EDH cards. Every set is designed with Commander in mind. If you don't play EDH, Magic is not a game for you anymore.

it is rare I meet someone who feels the same way I do
when they started designing sets with EDH in mind it started to get less fun

I'd buy you a pint if we were down the pub, mate.

One actually HUGE change I hate is how instead of having individual targets, a lot of spells are built/tuned strictly for multiplayer games.
There are some old examples of this, but they really kicked it up a notch.

I haven't bought any MtG in four or five years, but I do want to see how far the rabbit hole will go.

I've really been enjoying reading through Runequest, so I don't understand why it seems so underrated in modern gaming.
There doesn't really seem to be much interest in the current edition compared to early ones.
I was hoping that there could be more excitement over its potential.
Especially with the changes coming.

>it is the same as any other d100 derivative
Those don't have a functional loop either.

>why?
What do you mean why? Because the game's writers didn't understand game design enough to write one, of course. Or do you mean, "what is a cohesive gameplay loop"?

>You give people a starting area/situation and let them deal with it sandbox fashion.
>complications emerge or thing evolve story wise and a new situation emerges either in the same area or a different one
>you proceed to resolve that

there is your gameplay loop

I'm a newfag with only passing knowledge of the setting from playing KoDG for a short bit once and I've never played tabletop, but I would like to learn moar. Where do I get started? Which edition is the one to go between 2nd/3rd/4th (the newest, somehow?)/6th, heroquest, mythra and others?

If your coming from D&D 5e start with "RuneQuest Roleplaying in Glorantha" which is the latest edition.
>>

"RuneQuest Roleplaying in Glorantha" is going to be the easiest to get into as it is still in print being the most recent some people may refer to it as RQ7.

Do you want to actually play a game in a group or are you purely intested in the setting as a lorehound?

If you want to play then start with the Runequest starter set, it's great value for money and will give you everything you need to start a small campaign. You will likely need to get a group together as you are unlikely to find an existing group unless you are in a large city. Also as evidenced by this thread a lot of Runequest players a salty grognards who have been playing the game for 20+ years so trying to break into existing groups can be hard. If you enjoy the game then next get the main rulebook and the bestiary.

If you are just interested in the lore then the 2nd edition Sourcebook. If you have cash to splash the Guide to Glorantha, but I advise you get that one as pdf as it's stupidly expensive.

For some online resources there is:
