Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>97348969You will never be a real /osrg/ poster, you have no games, you have no character sheets, ect, ect, so on, so forth.
>>97348969So do you mind telling us what the situation is with your character sheets and the DM's house rules? You said that your character sheets aren't full of errors that they're just filled with House rules. You also said that you are the forever DM but admitted that you have only ever run one session though. So what DM are those character sheets for, and what house rules specifically are reflected on those sheets?
>>97348984Please explain to us the thing with the character sheets. We pointed out numerous glaring errors, but you have told us that they are just House rules from your DM But you said that you don't play and never have played as well. So can you explain to us specifically what those house rules your DM is using on your character sheets?

I have a friend who gets very frustrated when playing any elven, or agility/passing team, because he tries to play them like a bashing team in blood bowl. No screening, he will move players right next to a bigger guy or ball carrier, etc. How do I break him out of this habit? He gets frustrated over it.Also what would you pick for the underworld big guy? Rat ogre or troll? I vote for troll just to throw goblins at people.
>>97348030The most recent box came with a campaign structure about exploring a necron tomb world, so I was thinking I'd take that and inject the same freeform lore writing that I used to help the campaign I played back just before KT18 released to make it feel more immersive. Any details beyond that are still undecided though, including who in my local community I can get on board with it, considering I'm in the process of painting the whole terrain set AND starting up two roleplaying campaigns at the moment.
>>97348039Ask him why he's basing so much, what does he hope to gain out of it? Show him what screening is and explain how limiting the punches he receives as a lighter armoured team to just the 1 blitz is vital to his teams' survival.
>>97348025>How do you plan to run the enemy AI?I’m going to devise a priority table like you said; if I’m going with the spyrer’s I’ll likely develop a unique table for each model, but for the palanites they’ll likely all share one. The tables will likely be something like>roll d3>3 = I’d play as if I was the NPC’s and make what I think is the best decision (so if I see a chance to grenade like 4 of my fighters I have to take it)>1-2 = behaves according to a set priority tree that I then act on (making an objective “viable” by killing nearby enemies. If it doesn’t need to do that then it will interact with the objective. If it can’t do that then it will move to the objective safely; if it can’t do that then it will move to the objective in an unsafe way like running in the open or via parkour that isnt retardedly dangerous etc.)>attacking will have its own priority tree too; if any time I’d attack I have to prioritise using the model’s most lethal option, so if a model has a power sword and can charge they’ll use it over their stub gun, if a model has good armour the ai will use whatever has the best ap etc.)Figure adding that extra option for me to take charge will stop instances where I could cheese the NPC’s inadvertently by relying on them to fulfill certain behaviours. With the Spyrer’s I’d likely make it so stuff like the Orrus prefers getting into melee and acts a bit more brazen, whereas the Weld will likely prioritise shooting and staying a set distance from models when possible. If I go with palanites I’ll likely add behaviours like apprehending/capturing enemies and advancing with a teammate to their table over stuff like coup de grace’ing, going for outright kills and advancing blindly to an objective alone
>>97348032Yeah if you don't bridle your guns they might run around and shoot kids all on their own.

>>97348278Dude Saxtonites don't give a shit about the films and will use any excuse to justify their retarded claims>Uhhh we only see one Executor and it was clearly intended to be special to Vader and the EU made it so only a few other existed? Yeah but like... Han says in RotJ that there are other commander ships and he doesn't seem surprised by the Executor so CLEARLY this means the Executor is actually super fucking common and the rest is EU headcanon!>The Home One is stated in various reference books to be a singular ship in the Rebel navy? But like we see other ships in the background that VAGUELY look like it so the Rebellion actually has hundreds of Home Ones and the books are just EU headcanon!>The Death Star II is stated everywhere to be 200km long and it doesn't look big? Yeah but like... in this shot where we see the Endor moon in the background, if we do autistic pixel measurement it's way bigger and one of the ILM dudes said it was like 500x bigger than the first in an interview once! So CLEARLY the 200km stuff is EU headcanon!Irony being most also hate the PT and love Disney. From what I've seen in Fractal's server all his Saxtonite pals eat up Disney+ trash like breakfast.
>>97348311Isn't the canon diameter of DS2 about 5 times that of DS1? It's a bit inconsistent since some sources state it's the same size as the original or twice as big, but IIRC the numbers that show up in most later sourcebooks have it be more than twice the diameter of the original.
>>97348244>At first blush it doesnt sound like a nonsensical claim? From pretty much everything we see in SW media, not just the films themselves but also novels, games, etc., the ISD is consistently presented as a Very Big Ship. It's larger than anything the Rebellion had and while there are a handful of larger ships (the Executor most obviously, plus a few other super star destroyer designs that have shown up in comics or videogames), those are almost always fleet command ships (aka. the story's BBEG's personal ride that's narratively the final boss of the space battle) and you're almost never going to be seeing more than one at a time. So the idea that the ISD would be the equivalent of an escort ship just doesn't hold water. You could make an argument for it being the equivalent of a cruiser (big but not the biggest capital ship, designed to project power and operate independently or with a small support squadron for long periods), with the Executor-class being the battleship, though it probably make more sense to treat the ISD as a battleship and the SSD as a bigger battleship. One is the Schanhorst and the other the Tirpitz, if you will.
>>97348752That’s pretty accurate, I have a copy of the imperial handbook and the book does talk about some fleet formations consisting entirely of a single ISD without any support or escorts. So if I were to describe the “official” role of an ISD, it would be a heavy cruiser (or possibly battlecruiser)-carrier hybrid ship, much like the Venator before it. But the scale difference is due in large part to having slightly different overall objectives, the venator was built to fight battles and win wars, and the ISD was built to bully a largely unarmed civilian population (and satisfy some very insecure military commanders). So with that said, I’d categorize the SSD as: an abomination of engineering. The result of insecure imperial commanders doubling down on their “look as big and intimidating as possible” doctrine when the galaxy stopped buying their crap about how the empire is this “big, scary insurmountable monolithic organization that cannot be beaten” and started openly defying the Galactic Empire.
>>97348244>I guess I see star destroyers more akin to carriers if anything.ISDs correspond most closely to "battlecarriers", hybrids of carriers and battleships that never really got popular, though more like a combination of an amphibious assault ship with a battleship than a normal carrier with a battleship. Its main purpose is to blow away enemy capital ships with its big guns. Its secondary purpose is to land troops and provide them with orbital fire support. Its carrier capability exists to support those two missions (though its fighters often end up doing as lot of the real work because no one wants to engage the ISD itself if they can avoid it). There's nothing quite like it IRL - it's basically a single ship trying to fulfill all the specialized roles of a small fleet by itself.

Imagine… Queer Worlds… #wow #whoaImagine if there were Queer Worlds…#wow
>>97348861Ah, I see, you're retarded. Yes, the specific signifier is obviously socially mediated; I picked colors deliberately because I assumed that at this point everyone knows that blue=boy/pink=grill designation is wholly arbitrary and was semi-recently the other way around. The point isn't that little kids come pre-boxed with color designations, but that they're born with a *craving to learn the social signifiers* and then they insist on those. So for example, once a child learns that blue is for boys and pink for girls, he'll demand that order be kept; if he learned it the other way around, he'd equally vocally defend *that* separation. If he learns that the toga virilis is a garment for men he becomes outraged by seeing a woman wear it, and so on. (Of course, in ancient Rome, where they had significantly fewer scruples about this sort of thing, they'd just explain it to the boy, "no, that woman is a whore, there's a special rule that whores wear the toga so you can tell them apart from other women. Do you want to have a go?")
>>97348980>picked colors deliberatelySorry, this was unclear. I *put colors in the list of examples* deliberately, for the stated reason.
>>97348980>that they're born with a *craving to learn the social signifiers* and then they insist on those. But the point is you don't know that. You have no way to prove that. You'd have to have a child growing up in a world without any, to demonstrate that children "naturally" crave that, rather than that it's a result of growing up in those situations.
>>97348999Niggy, children in *every* human society *all over the planet* and *throughout history* insist on learning the difference. You're grasping at some very fragile straws here.
>>97348999>children grow up in a society where the difference is universal so there's no way to prove the instinct is real>they could only possibly have an instinct like this in a world where it didn't existAre you actually really stupid, Anon? If human beings are born with an innate instinct to reinforce the difference between men and women by social means, the *last* thing you'd ever expect to see is a world without social distinctions between the sexes. A world like that existing would in itself effectively constitute a disproof of the instinct.

They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.

There is a reason scientific journals use it to concatenate papers from multiple different authors.
>>97342362>I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes the system. Why is that?
>>97347993Despite my many efforts to explain and streamline things, they still think everything is way too complicated. They think there are too many skills, and that default penalties are too harsh. So I've introduced wildcard skills and taught them to use rules like Time Spent to offset default penalties. But they still don't like it.They think hit locations are too hard to hit, range penalties are too harsh, and that too many actions take too long in combat. I try to explain how you can offset penalties or do things faster by using combat options like Aim, Evaluate, All-Out Attack, Telegraphic Attack, and Extra Effort, or bump up skill or buy special advantages or techniques to make things easier. Their enemies are also subject to all the same rules, so knowing how to use these options should give them a huge leg up over their foes. But they think all these rules are unnecessary. "I've shot a gun before, [GM]. Anyone should be able to quick-draw a pistol and make a snap shot at a target's neck at 10 meters with 95% accuracy. These rules are stupid." I'm a noguns, so they don't take me seriously when I cite real-life firearm statistics.Generally, they think too many things give penalties, and don't like adding up penalties. I try to explain that these things which give penalties would just simply be impossible in other systems, and by leveraging modifiers they can make the impossible possible. They say "That's fine. Just don't let me do them then." Which baffles me, because when I was running D&D way back in the day, they were always complaining how they couldn't do anything. One player also dropped out of the game early while complaining that there was "too much combat." But he said he's also going to be joining my other player's DH2E/Sector-X game even though that game is going to have even more combat. So that also befuddled me. Although, it could've just been scheduling issues that he had to drop out, and the comment was incidental. He didn't say.
As a thought experiment, how would I write up an ability that lets me send my mind back in time? Like reloading a "save point" in video games, but it can go to any point in the past since the time you first acquired the ability. I'm thinking it would probably involve Jumper (Time) with Accessibility or some other limitations. It should be possible to use with conscious effort, but also trigger automatically on death, so Reflexive should also be there.
>>97348922>Anyone should be able to quick-draw a pistol and make a snap shot at a target's neck at 10 meters with 95% accuracy. These rules are stupid." I'm a noguns, so they don't take me seriously when I cite real-life firearm statistics. On a stationary target at the range you get something like +4, I doubt your friends can do that either or they're at least national level competitors
