For all we know, RDA got an exclusive contract. Or, like, megacorps rule earth. Can't exactly sneak a spaceship through, you'd be limited to infiltrating individual employees. But then again, we all know no such things will happen or has happened because Cameron's storytelling is just shallow, and the point is human bad, noble savage good.

Basically every megacorp figured out how to turn into the US healthcare industry and everyone is a debtslave, depending on how useful a debtslave you are you can get cushier jobs and better benefits.

They have interstellar travel, meaning plenty of energy by our standards, and an energy crisis, meaning they need a ton to run their everyday lives.
And they can't figure out a nice empty planet to colonize? Come on. Somebody in command just wants to play cowboys and indians

Pandora is orbiting one of the stars in the closet star to the Solar system. They probably haven't found any other potentially habitable planets yet.

There are still places to go that aren't immediately dangerous, taverns inns and shops still exist, they're simply more run down and likely to be of ill repute. The whole place isn't a smoking ruin filled with wyrdstone that you battle some dudes over (only most of it), consider the post-game where you explore without incident, go shopping and search for veterans.

Never had this problem in decades of playing and running games. Mando isn't a good example of a campaign. Its a good example of vague ideas of rpgs filtered through several layers of discombobulated storytelling people who have only watched CR or someshit will think is a game.

>>
I was always fascinated by how this game seems to not just be unbalanced, but to actively reject the idea of balance between character options.

>Alright guys, let's start the campaign. Let me see those characters.
>I'm a basic bitch grunt with a rifle, a body armor and some military-related skills. I also took the Communications Technician package that trades some combat skills for techy ones like Electronic Countermeasures (Jamming) and Radio (Scramblers).
>I start with one of the most powerful suits of power armor in the game. Its starting gun is a shotgun-railgun that can fire up to 5 kilometers away and does enough damage to one-shot a Jumbo Jet 7 times over. Also the book explicitly says I'm hailed as a hero and settlements will give me free ammo and repairs.
>I'm a 12 ft tall birdman demigod. I can fly, I have superhuman stats across the board and more ISP and PPE than most dedicated caster classes, and I automatically know all physical, sensitivity and telephaty psychic powers and all fire warlock spells. Oh, I can also open rifts and self-resurrect.
>I'm a forger, I can forge fake documents with a base 20% success chance (+5% per level) but to compensate I can't take cybernetics.
>>
>>97344438
Kevin himself said something about it being a "challenge", same with playing a character with shit like IQ 3, though, in my days, most GMs just forbid people to pick those commoner classes anyway.
>>
>>97344438
They seem to be better balanced between their individual books but when you bring it from other books or especially from the DBee book.

This does not apply to the Ultimate Edition, ironically. Those OCCs are kind of the ones found everywhere, including space. They are not balanced with within themselves at all. Really, I would not call the ultimate edition at all. Its more like a very thick primer for people to join games.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

All your examples are from D&D and all your arguments are because D&D 5e did it.

We're going to have to come up with a phrase for the new era of Warhammer 40,000 ushered in by the Amazon TV show, DoW 4 and Total War 40k, and increased market value of Games Workshop.

nu40k isn't going to cover it. nu40k is already bad enough for many of us from headier days like 1st through 4th edition. You are going to see horrific debasements to the thing you know and love that you will still see with your eyes closed. Every 80 IQ person with internet access will have an opinion on Warhammer without knowing what a Tau Remora Drone is.

I feel like Fallout isn't the same thing at all.
Fallout has some lore, some depth and some decent entries but nowhere near the quantity of WH and the last thing hardcore fans of the series genuinely care about came out 15 fucking years ago. Fanbase was barely alive anyway. Bethesda turned the setting it into pretty much a franchise that exists only to push merch and low quality products a long time ago and the TV series was exactly that, also clearly aimed at normie-normies

Meanwhile 40k still has very large, active and alive communities that are going to get flooded and gradually morphed into something largely different. TV show secondaries will probably be largely deflected, but game secondaries from Total War or DoW4 often do try to stick around and get into fandom, despite usually sticking out like a sore thumb

I think there are plenty of more people who've outright left rather than lurk. It kinda defeats the purpose to stick around if you aren't doing any multiplayer things, and he's only really sticking around for JITE.
>>
>>97346238
I can't really imagine being here just for one thing and not giving anything else even a chance. I managed to enjoy some MPs that I initially disliked after making a build. But the world is full of strange people, and to find yourself here of all places you probably have to be stranger than most.
>>
>>97346219
>Itsuki’s been killed off, at least for now. And apparently he might’ve just changed his mind again and decided to make a new JITE build
That sucks, I hope he gets better.
> maybe this could be a good time for all three detectives to come together and do something cool?
I would need to read some more to get the context but from what I understand he was a student? Even with no direct connection it's a pretty unusual thing for a student to die so Liren would have a reason to investigate, strangely enough. He posted 2 things while I was away so I guess I can start with those?
>>
>>97346226
I think someone that doesn't even read is a Lurker. If you read the rentrys you are a bit above a lurker.
>>
>>97346281
Not only was Itsuki a student, he was a former member of the Fujiwara Senki and good friends with Madoka and Yaya. Kiro no Kawa killed him, so that’s one way to accelerate the KnK plot yeah. I’m not sure how I’ll tackle this myself because I got other stuff to attend to, but I think the Student Council might find the investigation to be very high-profile so at least Kaoru’s gonna be looking into it. Yae-anon was around last thread (I think) and I think this investigation is big enough to warrant Kaoru and Yae working together. I can see Liren kinda inserting himself into it, why not. Decent starting point

I assume giant spider legs count?
>>97343905
The the veil rider game that have their reproductive parts down there.
>>
>>97343404
Its easy to look at this character design and see advantages: wall climbing, presumably increased carrying weight on those legs, perception bonus from multiple legs, etc.

What would the downsides to a spider-taur be, ignoring for the moment any social ones? What would such a spider person actually be worse at than a human? The two that come to mind for me are "armor becomes a problem, making them squishy in a fight" and "have trouble fitting into small spaces". The former is significant, the latter mostly isn't. Spiders are actually really good at squeezing through cracks and stuff, so I imagine that a spider-taur will be able to get through a human sized doorway or hall just fine, even if they will look weird doing it.
>>
>>97344832
>Mass and metabolic demand
Approximately 18% of a person's weight is in their legs. Each of the spider-taur's legs might be a little thinner than a humans but having 8 of them is still going to add a significant amount to their overall bodyweight. That will result in a commensurate increase in their basal metabolic rate and therefore the amount of calories they require to survive.
>Walking efficiency
Walking on two legs is significantly more efficient than walking on four. I suspect the comparison becomes even more dramatic against eight.
>Packing efficiency
Good luck forming a shield wall or phalanx. Volley fire with bows or muskets is less effective when you're spread out too.
>Reach
Good luck defending your legs against someone to your side or your rear against someone behind you.
>>
>>97343404
both are fine

For the counterfactuals. Where the history and mythology does not exist. And the rules must have clear descriptions separating game functions.

How, exactly, do you write rules for a Wizard doing the rather common COUNTERSPELLS under this prescribed meaning of "magic" that flagrantly ignores words being capable of having outright contradictory meanings? Because that game function strictly requires spells be a distinct thing that can be countered, in turn strictly requiring that they be put in a box away from all the non-spell game functions.
