Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>97165346Resources for Newfags: https://sites.google.com/view/wbgeneral/Worldbuilding links: https://pastebin.com/JNnj79S5 (embed) (embed)https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/Eo+fK41FKVR7xDpbNO0a0N4k0YYxrmyrhX3VxnM14Ew/Fantasy map generator: https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generator/wbi/: https://discord.gg/6ZjEc7dy4TWorldbuilding Hub: https://discord.com/invite/wGjxK3YThe Writer's Forge: https://discord.com/invite/CUxHxWqTira: https://discord.com/invite/f52W6KgComment too long. >>97320182what makes them feel out of place?
>>97311994>thread questionDepends on who I'm aiming to interest.
I’m thinking of completely subverting the dwarven stereotype by following the Pillars of Eternity approach—making them 'Boreal Dwarves' based on the concept of Neo-Neanderthals, even if the setting's inhabitants don't know that. I want to avoid the subterranean lifestyle, the 'drunk Scottish' trope, and the 'displaced people' allegory.Similarly, I want to adapt Lizardfolk and other reptilian races through a biological lens rather than a purely fantasy one. By making them strictly cold-blooded, their populations would be concentrated primarily in tropical regions.
>>97319532I went looking for this myself; best I found in a gameplay context for a big fat list of alchemy was:- Darklands has a bunch of alchemy because its "wizards" are alchemists- Pathfinder has an Alchemist class, 1e Pathfinder was 3.x bloatware so there's a whole lot of potions there.Maybe there's some alchemical equivalent of the Picatrix, idk.>>97315399Wonderfags are brain-fried by Nasushit. People in the past thought magic had lots of rules, whenever they were making up reasons it failed (other than it not being real), it was always either you did it wrong or a malicious spirit fucked it up.
>>97320394It makes me wonder if in a mafic setting magic would be treated or recognized as magic at all but classified as another branch of science. Isaac Newton was very much into occult and alchemy besides science.

>>97318604City of Brass anon here, through their intense passivity and just overall being pieces of cardboard my group managed to make the only elf (even if he a half-elf) quit the game. Honestly this allowed me some reflection. This is a terrible fucking group when all together. They don't communicate with each other between sessions, and worse it requires repeated prodding for me to get them to do simple things like downtime (even to just say they don't wanna use it). Some of it might be wanting to not "hog the spotlight", but that only goes so far.>The barbarian just sits there doing nor saying anything, and seems allergic to any kind of hook dangled before him.>The paladin is only half present, chores keeping him moving about and so not at the PC, yet barely seeming to be paying attention via his phone. >The former druid now warlock is a back-seating jackass that wants to plan out his characters arc precisely as if he's creating a Pathfinder 2e build, and seemed resistant to my suggestion that he wait and see what comes up in the game.>The monk is okay, she just wants to punch shit.I'd sent them a thing just referencing some of what I'd noticed, telling me to not be afraid of "taking up" the spotlight and also setting expectations for the rest of the campaign. Honestly? If none of them reply, I'm just gonna end things.

>>97319450>>97319469Could be related to the nightly city wide bleeding zone and have deeper dungeon pockets start showing up, since it's been spreading. Or the mysterious bleeding zone mission.
>>97319460>>97319470Anyone can get to all the dungeons manually, the council just has access to fast travel.
>>97320246Didn't everyone just aggree to let that one die? Something about it being too poisoned.>>97320262I like the first one, a bit like the actual Tartarus. Some parts of the city would slip deeper in and expand, that would create the bigger dungeon, maybe clearing them stabilizes them and they can slowly be used to build a path to the core. The second one seem less fitting, mostly because of the themes and rewards of it, the big bad seems to want to either kill or enslave humanity, while that zone seems made specifically to either allow perfect coexistence with humans or to evolve them past the limits of humanity. It seems more something a rival would do, to sectretly undermine the conquest, or a strange phenomenon born from the world trying to balance things out.

I'm happy Stranger Things is done.My DM expected everyone to watch it and would drop references to the show during games like they were some kind of reward.
>>97320024for what fucking purpose?
>>97320212It was a battle against some cultists in an underground temple, and we had gone in from some side way we thought was secret. We start fighting, advancing away from that side entrance with the mage way behind, and then a succubus just comes in from behind the mage and hits him with charm. We all fucked up. We should have immediately turned back to rescue the mage, but we were still fighting the cultists, and the succ got four levels off him with kiss suggestions before we could kill her.We didn't really understand how bad things were until the mage player explained what his character had lost and how the succ had basically killed him.

>>97308655I have most of the DG books but haven't read them. The earliest ones in the timeline, iirc, are very hard to find physical copies of. Am I good jumping into any of pic related? What should the reading order be?
>>97319910Nearly all of them are just short story collections from various authors with no real canon. The only two stories off the top of my head that are canon are "Rules of Engagement" and "Through A Glass Darkly". So you can pretty much pick up any book and dive in."Denied to the Enemy" I suppose also is, but it is also set during WW2 when Delta Green was just an extension of the OSS. So probably canon, but not like, necessary to know. Its also just not that great.>https://www.delta-green.com/reading-order-delta-green-fiction/Has the official reading order. Also, fwiw, the POD versions of the Pagan-era books (You have Dark Theaters, so Alien Intelligence) are decent quality, but the eBooks of them are garbage.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs! Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? >>97314510If you think you have to do that for every NPC then you're doing something wrong. Also if it's that big of a deal and you want them to have the proficiencies listed, just make a set of default proficiencies that everyone gets including endurance, and then just swap one out for a specialty or whatever if somebody is a specialist
>>97318590I meant classed NPCs. 0th level NPCs are defined by their profession, so that's okay. Why are you singling out Endurance specifically, though?
>>97315060>Has never heard of a Gold Dragon
>>97315231You did it right. Don't feel too bad. I once used the treasure stats (for killing an entire lair) to calculate the reward for slaying 1 (one) Ghoul.
>>97314794>That makes sense but mass production is not really how I picture magic items to work in my campaign.Hey, totally fair. However, lest I not make myself clear, similarity is not necessarily "mass production". A master craftsman who makes flutes for a living might turn out dozens of instruments that look very similar to each other and have similar characteristics but he makes them all one at a time sequentially over decades and they look fairly similar to the flutes made by his master and the other pupils that his master trained. In the same vein, if you have a handful of elves making two wands of CLW per year over their centuries-long careers who learned from other elves making very similar wands for centuries prior, that could be a hell of a lot of very similar wands floating around even if 95% of them never end up anywhere near a hoard. That would be more like the situation in the second paragraph under the purple, where the party might have seen an elvish wand of CLW before and says "oh, we know what that is". Of course, if it's NOT the same across the board then that could also be a barrel of laughs if they take it for granted and then whip it out for the first time in a time of need.>That's an interesting proposal, but that would give away how common the item is even on a failed roll.Kinda. Then again, especially powerful magical items are often especially notable. Yeah you might run across some powerful thing made by a mythological figure of yore that's basically a generic piece of jewelry a la the one ring but given the insane expense associated with sticking magic in an item the items being imbued tend to get nicer and nicer as the items get more and more powerful.>Perhaps it needs to be massaged a bit. What would you suggest?
This is a general for toddling, where you can talk about AD&D 2e, "old school inspired" pseudo-clones & other general non-OSR games. This general is separate from /osrg/ due to them having nothing in common.Previous thread>>97301927

>>97315586Faerun to be honest. I like the 80s high fantasy it struck in those splats. One setting I've always been curious about running is 1e's Kara-Tur. I think there were interesting ideas for other motivating factors and modes of play. Honor provides another carrot to incentivize activities, like gold and xp. The idea of PCs having land and titles to deal with seems neat, as do the court skills and the way the Yakuza class had his own parallel system for running the criminal underworld. I think Zeb Cook had some really interesting ideas, but I don't know how they work in practice.>>97315601I've had this idea of using a trading hub on a fantasy silk road as a campaign hub for that sort of East-meets-West crossroads.

>>97318641>>97318649The gold adds much needed contrast to your cold and dark colors.I would recommend doing a small glaze shading with a redish brown color like reikland fleshade towards the bottoms to add a bit more warmth, then highlight as usual.Might be a bit hard to see in my picture, but look at the crossguard on the sword, I glazed aggrax earthshade towards the shadows, and then a very focused shade with rhinox hide.

Why do spellcasters and gun users never get along?
>>97305568Because most fantasy systems are stuck in some weird archaic setting where guns don't exist or are pure flintlocks, and casters have some means of casting for free.My system is modern fantasy, doesn't have infinite damage cantrips, and mandates casters carry a weapon. Firearms happen to be one of the better options for range if you aren't doing stealth (bows/crossbows are better for that since they're silent and you can enchant them for greater range/accuracy/damage/other effects and normally guns can't be enchanted) so it's best to have them - even if you suffer a massive damage penalty with weapons as a fullcaster.
I hope this thread stands as a reminder to the world how absolutely incompetent and useless the moderators and janitors of this board are.And I'll be shocked if this post is allowed to stay, since puckee and his trolls are practically protected for fuck knows what reason.
>>97319846Wasn't the deal that mana dried up and now magic is useless? The thing the antagonists did was different. Much weaker than magic, but theirs doesn't require space be filled to the brim with free mana to consume. That's also why caster shells are so rare.
>>97320092What's a puckee? Google says it's a urinal cake, so this name has no real presence online, did people here just make it up?
>>97320237Resident spammer. Look through the 4chan archives. The fact the system keeps flagging my posts as spam every time I try to type in the full name really says something.
I think the next revival movement in a sinilar vein to the OSR is going to be 3rd edition focussed. I think that granular, complex build focussed market isnt really served by 5e or pathfinder truly, and theres empty space in the market/community.
>>97308483My ideal situation is WotC shuttering and the communities surrounding 3.5 and 4e and even 5e hacking the remnants. Also that this process becomes what makes a given game the OSR label. If only to shut the "AD&D ISN'T OSR!" weirdoes up.
>>97319629Nah, I don't buy that. Most people who want to play 3.5 or Pathfinder are still playing 3.5 or Pathfinder. Also, you're kind of making it sound like the books are hard to read or something. I get that they are 20 years old, but honestly, the 3.5 books are better in layout and art direction than quite a bit of what gets put out now, d&d included. It's not like od&d, where parts of it are, let's say, a little unclear.
>>97319629>most people who want 3.5 don't know they do/dont want to pick up an old rulebook. They need something new and fancy.I do like how the anons aiming for 3.5 revolutions have skipped the indi small enthusiast phase and proceeded directly to the >make new shiny thing for CONSUMERS Its weirdly fitting as the shark jump happening in utero.
>>97320133There's an argument to be made for making a retroclone to have a legally distinct version of the splatbook content that makes 3.5 interesting to this day that never made it into SRD, maybe. I'd rather see people make modules.
>>97320133Making money is good, yeah.

>>97317851>”what? No spoiler about some weirly wholesome but embarrassing secret”No, not really, when I sat down to make this character, I did so with the goal of trying to make a character that is as unambiguously hateable as I could while still keeping the character believable.
>>97315323I mentioned him earlier here >>97313973Made him one of the first batches of Clones, so he'd have extensive combat experience. Was part of an elite squad that raided several key Separatist leaders homes and ships, including a (botched) raid on Grievous' capital ship. Because he's an older clone, the indoctrination isn't as good as it would later be and he suffers from instability, having an episode that got him kicked out of his squad and would have just languished in the shittiest of shit jobs if the Jedi making up the party hadn't wrangled him along for their mission. It involves tailing Grievous, so the figured a clone with experience having fought Grievous and survived would be a good candidate. Only I drink constantly and smoke way too many death sticks to cope with the crippling PTSD.Still, as a heavy weapons operative, he stays at ranged to provide fire support. And carries a few dozen grenades because I can throw one as a bonus action. The campaign has been a rough retelling of KOTOR1 but during the Clone Wars. The party is on Taris, with Separatists blockading the planet instead of Sith, and heard there were rakghouls haunting the lower levels. We went to investigate and found they weren't ghouls, just spice mine slaves who got addicted to the airborne particulates and eventually all their minds snapped. So the slavers just dumped them in the slums to go feral and grabbed more hapless civilians to press into their mining gang. We freed all the non-psychotic slaves and detonated the slavers.Got dragged into an underground series of arena battles, eventually fighting a mandalorian boss character. I claimed his helmet because my character is the only one who has mando blood. Cloned mando blood but still valid. Battled through literally hundreds of B1s in a Separatist base before beheading a command droid (needed his codes to get through the blockade) and hijacking a tank to shoot a up couple dozen vulture droids.
>“Luke, many years after I die you will have to deal with the machinations of a warlord named Trioculus. Now, Trioculus is a warlord of the Empire, but not one of the competent ones. No, no. He is the sort of villain who announces himself with phrases like ‘Dark Greetings!’ as though he’s trying out catchphrases for a children’s holodrama. He will claim to be the son of Emperor Palpatine, and many will believe him, because he has three eyes and that seems convincing enough for most Moffs. But Luke… you must remember this. It is vital. He is not Triclops. Triclops is a different three‑eyed son of Palpatine. The galaxy is large, and the Emperor was… busy. Trioculus will seek the Glove of Darth Vader, a relic of unimaginable power, or at least of considerable marketing potential. He will build superweapons. He will command Stormtroopers. He will kidnap children. And yet, Luke… he will be thwarted. Repeatedly. By those very children. He is not a great threat. He is more of a… persistent inconvenience. A sort of cosmic reminder that evil is not always grand or terrifying. Sometimes it is merely embarrassing. But take heed, Luke. Should you ever hear someone greet you with ‘Dark Greetings!’… do not be alarmed. It is only Trioculus. He means well. Or at least, he means something. And in his own way… he is a good friend.”
