It doesn't bother me in the slightest. Anything published after, say, 2002, is fanfiction as far as I'm concerned. There are no female Custodes, the Primarchs are never coming back, Primaris Marines don't exist, Cadia did not blow up, the Cicatrix Maledictum isn't real, and so on. I don't care if you're employed by Games Workshop to write material about 40K, anything you or anyone else says is meaningless to me. I consider 40K to be an eternally static setting with a deliberately unrevealed future - anything that progresses the stories is anathema to that and I will ignore it.

Anyone play it yet? I like the "rustic fantasy" setting. The core rules seem interesting, it has more mechanics and gameplay than most other narrative games. I enjoy that it doesn't have moves or whatever to confine you, you can actually play your character and do whatever you want. It's got enough knobs and options in terms of resolution I feel like it's actually a real game despite having that more story focus vs simulation focus. And I like that the DM has all the traditional power of the DM and there's not like "Fate Points" or something else that gives players control to change stuff.
Thinking I might try a short game for my table, just a few lower powered sessions. It also has good tools for a solo stuff which is interesting.

Either sand&bone or fire&jade are fine, and then one~two spearhead boxes.
>>
So I'm checking out the Nurgle unit previews, and while Festus sounds pretty dope, and the Rotswords have potential if the warscroll isn't dogwater, I feel like when it comes to blightkings their ability is just kind of ass, especially considering it's once per turn (army) it should just trigger on all doubles. Then while the sloven knights have a great ability (assuming, again, the warscroll isn't otherwise shit) it being once a turn (army) AKA "no fun allowed" is kind of a let down.

Am I missing something?
>>
>>97280283
Yeah no anons despairing over blightkings being absolute shit has been fairly present in every thread since the tome was leaked like a week and a bit ago.
There was a little bit of copium that maybe SOMETHING interesting was hiding out in their keywords, like priest 1, but yeah no obviously not.
Gw wants you to buy rotswords. Blightkings will be suddenly great again in 5th edition, mark my words.

Chat GPT's answer is rather intriguing, I'm going to try to get it to give me some more authoritative sources. It is really annoying too because 3.5 is such abandonware at this point, why does it matter if I reference their creatures, when they don't make stuff for 3.5 anymore.
>>
>>97279214
When asking about this stuff, enable web search and peek at the sources.
>>
>>97279453
Yeah I read some guys blog and it wasn't hugely helpful.
It really does sound like you have to make such vague references. Like "there is a tall horned humanoid, a minotaur with earth elemental talents, you can learn more from the third Tome of Monsters on page 113, if you know what I mean" but even that might be too much.

Honestly? Might just copy some stats for monsters, change their ability wording (probably improve it, if anything) and do things that way. Just rename it and change it enough. Like those guys who made "OGL safe illithids" for Pathfinder.

ironically this solution screws over WotC more because it bypasses their content entirely, and means that fewer people will buy their books (not that most people would be anyway, nor is WotC even making money off of 3.5 books anymore)

Hello everybody.
I am planning a dwarf based campaign (all my PCs will be dwarves and the majority of items, feats, monsters etc will, in some shape or form, be associated with dwarves as a race) for next session.
Can anyone please recommend any d20 3.5 books that are, for the most part, dwarf themed.

So far I have used Races of Stone (WotC), Dungeon/Dragon Magazine articles, Quintessential Dwarf I/II (Mongoose), Heroes Of High Favor - Dwarves (Badaxe Games), Races Of Renown - Hammer & Helm (Green Ronin) and Advanced Race Codex - Dwarves (Green Ronin).

Thank you in advance.
>>
>>97279899
Depends on the type of dwarfing you're getting up to but Drow of the Underdark and Forgotten Realms - Underdark have sections on cave ecology, spelunking, and the like.

Then go for it I guess. In my experience no one at any table liked using heavy mechanics for base building.
If you ever played the Kingmaker and that one crusader game for Pathfinder, the biggest complaints people had was the base building itself. And I'm pretty sure those two games basically used the Bastion rules.

how do you run an osr-adjacent game without magical healing?

you might want to check out Cartel (the pbta Narcos game) or the 100 Bullets comic for inspiration, it's like a modernized digestible take on the era without the kids on bikes trope.
>>
>>97279021
>how do you run an osr-adjacent game without magical healing?
In ItO games you have 1d6hp that recovers with minimal resting but all attacks hit. Damage above your hp is taken down from your stats. Functionally what is called "HP" is actually consumable AC.
If your stats go down you roll under your new lowered stat and if you fail it's a crit. I don't recall how it goes in ItO but in this one crit damage means you're down until someone takes an action to help you.
People went down and up all the time. Any hit has a high chance of downing you, anyone can pick you up, you are constantly more and more likely to go down with any hit.
That aspect went pretty good, the players had multiple options and tried things I doubt they would in other settings/systems.

The mechanics for automatic weapons are also pretty good and in-line with the system. You roll a die for each target and everyone gets the lower one. That means each new target probably lowers the damage, but after a couple rounds all HP is spent so any damage could be critical and get them out of the fight.

It was a decent one shot. I just wish I had some better way to make players adapt to a different genre.

I recalll 100 Bullets being more grunge than glam. I wanted that Phil Collins playing over a shoot out kind of vibe, the closest players got was wantign Push It To The Limit playing all the time. But I read like over a decade ago.
>>
>>97279136
>I don't recall how it goes in ItO
Similar but deadlier.
Failing a critical damage roll means you're out of action until someone else gets to you and you have a short rest to restore HP. If no one gets to you in an hour you're dead.
Sounds like the Miami 86 helping each other up is faster and fits the fleshwound action run and gun vibe. Combat in ItO can get very deadly very quickly if enough party members get hit and taken out of action. Tends to result in TPK or a few survivors running away in my experience. Might try the 86 method next time.

I was about to download the latest update and I noticed that you've added stuff for Soul-tethering, which made me wonder...

Some of these creatures used to belong to player facing races, have you considered supporting the player transforming into one of them, like someone becoming a Succubus or a Vampire or such.

All it would really take is having XP costs for the relevant traits and feats, and maybe a framework to better come up with the rituals to do it (which would be useful to have as player objectives even if playing the monster itself were to fall beyond the scope of the game).

In that vein, are there any plans to support controlled transformations on the part of the player? One idea I had for a character was a creepy mega-nerd alchemist (or mage who knows alchemy) in a journey to become a THE Tentacle Monster and I've found the lack of recipes for mutagens pretty disappointing.
>>
>>97275856
It is, and I didn’t
>>
>>97276542
>have you considered supporting the player transforming into one of them
No but the succubus has her own Corruption table. Other than that, that's more for homebrew especially considering how succubi and incubi work in Labyrinthus
>All it would really take is having XP costs for the relevant traits and feats, and maybe a framework
That's a lot of work, balance-wise, especially if you read the succubi and vampire Traits
>maybe a framework to better come up with the rituals to do it
The framework is Oracles+Imagination. You don't always need the game to tell you what to do, just get the idea and go
>a journey to become a THE Tentacle Monster
There are many ways to mutate, mostly through corruption. Mutagens are left vague so you can come up with something. Or make a homebrew.
Most of the stuff I add is often something suggested which is simple, but if it's complex either it requires me to put effort OR to use homebrews as inspiration and currently I'm focusing on testing and making sketches. if you want to can post your ideas in the discord so you can also test them and have other test them too
>I was about to download the latest update
I hope you still had downloaded the update
>>

Damn any interesting stories from it?

>>97263913
It is what it is. I was sorta achievement hunting at that point, the character had become pretty strong (being a vampire is actually pretty great, at the potential risk of a death spiral if you ever get captured/defeated) and I had just arrived at the Fae Forest to learn a ton of magic, since the free massive Magic you get as a vampire had been pretty underused so far.

>>97279597
Going off of memory here, when she visited the city her first sewer mission (the homebrew one) went about as poorly as it could've gone without her straight up getting defeated. She had to escort a city official down to a blockage and on the way she almost got defeated by like... three slimes. Because she relied mostly on blocking and so the acid + slimed debuffs were stacking up on account of poor rolls. If she didn't have the clean spell she might've lost there, which would've been insanely embarrassing as she already killed an Orc Boss in his stronghold at that point. Then she encounters a pair of sewer crocs at the mission's objective which messed her up, shredded her armor into nothing and by the end she was at half health. This was all made much worse since I ruled early on that if a vampire feeds while escorting an NPC, they gain +5 Vigilance reduced by 1 per success on persuasion, so I was trying to avoid drinking meaning no healing for free after combat. The problem compounded when she ended up saving a kidnapped girl on the way back. By the end she got like +6 vigilance from the two NPCs seeing her feed and was butt naked.
