Anybody played Castaway with the Stranded solo zine expansion? I've been looking for survival-focused solo games and I found it, but I have little experience with Mork borg. Also recommend other solo titles with an emphasis on survival mechanics

That is me. I am still working on it, slowly. The combat system works great and is very versatile, with room for upgrades and tons of skills and equipment, lasting injuries and such. It basically just copies Blood Bowl but with abstracted positioning, and using 3d6 instead of 2d6 so it has a bit more room for variety. The main issue is that it isn't particularly fast, doing lots of these combats in a single dungeon run doesn't sound appealing. Especially over and over again. It is also reliant on you playing against yourself, as you are also controlling the delvers. I mitigate that by having delvers worth more the further they get into your dungeon, so you want a sort of balancing act where you want the delvers to succeed because it makes them worth more points, but also want to defeat them. I'm thinking I might have most encounters in the dungeon solved by simple skill checks or simplified battles of some sort, with a full battle against that room's denizens only happening rarely. That would make it fun because you might really want to see how the monsters of particular rooms fare in combat, but they are only actually fought rarely. Puts tension on every dice roll that way.

For actual dungeon building I'm operating with a tag system. Rooms are basically just empty spaces with archtypes applied to them, then you can fill the room with features. Features both require a tag and also usually add a tag or two. Features cost a certain amount of points, and also require a certain amount of space that you have to account for. For example the Water feature requires the Natural tag, or an adjacent room with the Water tag. It obviously adds the Water tag and also provides food of the Fish type, etc.

So as an example, I might have a room that is of the Fortress archtype, which grants the Military tag. The Military tag is required for me to build a Barracks feature in the room, which grants the room the Training tag, which gives access to various types of trained Denizens like soldiers or captains. Normally the Water feature requires the Natural tag, but since there is an adjacent room that already has the Water tag, I can add it here and say the goblins built a canal or something.

In a DARK possessed Joey deck that retypes most of the monsters as DARK Pyros (e.g Rocket Destroyer, Gearfried the Searing Knight) or DARK Beast-Warriors (E.G SwordImp of Landstar and Sharkman Fisherman) what type should the evil Gilford be? Physical changes are allowed for the theme. Should he go with the main 2? Have a new type to make him standout as an evil boss? Or should he just be dark warrior? My front runners are Pyro, Zombie, Thunder, and Fiend.

Hey, glad you're enjoying your gift and sorry for your loss, especially during the holidays. I like to probe my recipients for more gift ideas, to influence the card and if time permits, I'd add a gag gift like an amateurish sculpt (which I seem to have only done once). When you said you liked Das Boot, a submarine model just felt like a no brainer.

I have also attached a scan of the card before I shipped it.

I've done copic ones in previous years but this one is specifically acrylic paint. I wanted to try the Golden So Flat stuff. When you say bleed, did you mean bleed through the paper or do you mean how the ink bleeds past the inked lines? For the former, it's a fact of life but you could mitigate it with thicker paper. For the latter, use a more toothier paper and try to get rid of excess ink by running it on a scratch paper before starting. Otherwise, I would just go over the offending spot with a color pencil.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

Slip and fall from standing to the ground. Treating it as a fall from half his height, that’s about 4 yps, doing 1d-1 (potentially up to 2d with lots of HP).
Paint can to the face. As far as I can tell, a pendulum with a six foot arm dropping a weight in standard gravity will be moving about 8 yps at the bottom of its swing. The paint cans seem to be 1 gallon capacity and part full, so maybe 4 lbs. (6 HP). That’s just barely enough to reach 1d-1. Then he falls, but breaks his fall on Marv, so probably only takes another 1d-2. Still, a typical human would be on his second death check around this point.
Another dramatic trip and fall, 1d-1 again.
Gets hit in the chest by Marv with a crowbar. As Marv was only trying to kill a tarantula, this probably wasn’t a full strength blow, but may well have done a bit more damage.
Pendulum swing from around 10’, maybe 9 yps, another 1d-1. Fall from a couple of yards, another 1d-1. Might be on his third death check at this point.
The ‘shovel killer’ hits him on the back of the skull with a snow-shovel. I’d treat this as an ultra-light (Martial Arts, p. 234) version of the shovel (Horror, p. 51), for swing+3(0.5) crushing. The ‘shovel killer’ is old, but seems in good health and is fairly tall, so maybe ST 10, for a total of 1d+3. With effective DR 4 from the skull and the wounding modifier, that’s about 10 HP on an average hit. Probably into the fourth death check, but he survives.

Marv (Daniel Stern)
BB gun to the face (1 HP) or skull (0 HP).
Fall and slide down icy steps. Action 5 says to treat this as a fall with a distance equal to that to the next landing (presumably measured vertically). Marv is much bigger than Harry (6’4”) so probably has 11-12 HP at least. Looks like the steps are about half a storey (5’) so this will be about 6 yards per second. That’s 1d for a normal human-scale character, maybe 2d if he has ridiculous HP.
>>
>>97237468
Crowbar falls on his head. Assuming a 2 lbs. pry-bar (5 HP), it seems to fall from maybe 5-6’, so 5-6 yps, doing a measly 1d-3 or 1d-2. With skull DR, this is weirdly survivable in GURPS, doing at most 8 HP and more likely 0.
Iron drops on his head. This should have similar HP to the crowbar, but seems to fall further, maybe 10’. Still only 1d-2, but this time to the face, inflicting 0-4 HP. Seems to also do 1 point burning follow-up. Again, this would be potentially fatal in real life, but is easily survivable even by a ‘realistic’ normal human in GURPS.
Steps on a nail after losing his footwear. Treating this as a caltrop, thrust-2 impaling based on his ST (so maybe 1d-3), maximum 2 injury. Probably another 1 HP lost.
Falls from maybe 6-8 stairs up (4-5’) taking another 1d or so crushing, seems to be to the torso.
Steps on broken glass with bare feet. This is basically just a cutting caltrop with another -1 damage. Seems fairly superficial, so maybe another 1 HP. Around this point, a ‘realistic’ human would be below 0 HP.
Slip and fall from standing to the ground. Treating it as a fall from half his height, that’s about 5 yps, doing 1d (potentially up to 2d with lots of HP).
Paint can to the face for 1d-1. The impact knocks him over, so he has another fall for 1d or so, then Marv falls on top of him for another 1d-2. At this point a normal person would start making death checks.
Pendulum swing from around 10’, maybe 9 yps, another 1d.
Fall from a couple of yards, another 1d-1.
The ‘shovel killer’ hits him on the back of the skull with a snow-shovel for 0-20 HP. This could mean a couple more death checks, but if so, he makes them.
>>
>>97237472

So long as they have decent HT, the level of injury they sustain is survivable by 'normal' humans with no special traits. Remaining conscious and active throughout the experience is going to be much more difficult, suggesting that both the burglars have high levels of Hard to Subdue. Harry may need a total HT + HTS of 18 or better to keep going after the paint can. Marv could probably manage with 1 level less.

If we're doing Christmas movies, is there a good way to handle characters who can spawn more of their kind really quickly, like the Mogwai/Gremlins?
How about characters which permanently shift to another template, potentially one with a different point total?
>>
How about John McClane? IIRC he only gets shot once (in Die Hard, at least), with his own handgun (a Beretta 92, presumably loaded with standard power 9mm FMJ or JHP, more likely the former given the era). It's a Hollywood 'only got hit in the shoulder, no problem' flesh-wound, so probably using cinematic combat rules to just get rid of damage, but what if you had to get similar levels of toughness without cinematic rules? He takes dozens of blunt impacts, but only a couple of them seem like absolutely brutal ones (Karl kicking him through a thick piece of wood, swinging into the side of the building). Explosions are cinematic fireballs, but mostly seem far enough away that I wouldn't expect fatal injuries from the blasts. Even shooting the movie gave Bruce Willis permanent hearing damage, so I expect that the 'real' McClane would need some seriously tough eardrums to hear anything at all by the end of the film.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

(Continued.)

Sounds dumb. This isn't DND.
>>
>>97235283
If you pick the biggest conspiracy possible, all the characters are horrible, fucked-up Evangelion monsters constantly on the verge of collapsing into piles of radioactive gore and melting the entire planet into nanomachines and are only held together by love and hatred. It's Devilman, not D&D. The game doesn't actually want you to go bigger than SHOCKER.
>>
>>97235301

The game does, actually, want you to play at Standing/Threat Level 7 to 10 at some point, at least in theory. That is why the core rulebook has two Standing 7 conspiracies, Onachus and the Vigilance Society, and has rules for Standing 8 through 10.

The upcoming Deep Dive supplement is supposed to detail ten conspiracies from Standing 1 to 2, ten from Standing 3 to 5, ten from Standing 6 to 8, and another ten from Standing 9 to 10. Many of them have already been previewed, mostly in full. Have a look at the blurbs for the Old Boys Club, the Stargazers, and the Symposium here, for example: >>97217974

Black Vans specifically offers the possibility of starting at a Threat Level higher than 6. As far as Scar management goes, you can either:
• Just deal with it.
• Do the cheesy thing of picking the least inconvenient Scars.
• Use one of the Black Vans alternate supernatural types, who do not have to deal with Scars.
• Use one of the Black Vans variants that tremendously reduces Scars. The high fantasy and superhero emergence genres both greatly dial down Scars, for example, and there are suggestions for mixing and matching genres with bits and pieces.
>>
Quick question:
Can deviants be made by other splats? I read somewhere that you could.
>>
>>97237624
Yep. Basically anything can make a Deviant.

What are some things that retired adventurers in double-digit levels could get up to in a city?

I have an idea for a faction for the next chapter of my campaign being built around five such figures who hold different forms of formal or informal power in the same city, and are still on friendly terms with each other. Each of the five has a successful business operation or other field of influence which may or may not be related to their class abilities, and they can call upon each other for assistance if they run into problems of any kind.
>>
Most adventurers either die on the job or become vagabonds once they cannot do the job anymore.
>>
>>97237394
Most. I want these five to feel like the competent exception, good enough to retire comfortably while still being "in the game" to the point where they get most of the reward with little of the risk.
>>
>>97237367
What game?
Assuming 5e double digits is high enough to solo mid level devils and demons, so you're probably on retainer with a mercenary company defending the city or its more powerful institutions, leading your own prominent temple, enjoying high placement as a city official or as celebrity researchers/alchemists

Really this is easily solved by writing the characters first, then assigning them an organization after

Thanks. It's going to be of interest to jumper for a bit. And a bit concerning. He's going to spend a bit trying to mitigate the issue and researching a solution to it

>Dragons that exist on a level above Kings and are paid tribute but otherwise largely don't interfere with the affairs of mortals
Vs
>Dragons establish their own empires with their own bureaucracies, integrating half-dragons, dragonborn, humans, kobolds, and other races
Which do you prefer? Or is there one that fits a particular type of dragon more than the others?

If we wanted to use it for something else, we'd have to come up with a new genre for it.
We have to have hyperspecific pigeonholes to confuse the concept of genre and argue endlessly over what is TRUE SCI-FI or if it's actually just laserpunk space dark fantasy fictionpunk science.

Dieselpunk seems to be stuck in the alternate history territory and that makes it stupidly limited. There is no reason that we couldn't have a dieselpunk setting set in a completely fictional world. The way I see it the most important aspect is a highly industrialized and militarized 1984-style dictatorship and that could exist in any setting.

Mutant Chronicles?

That is partially due to dieselpunk advancing straight into 50's style atompunk. You pretty much need to stop the atomic age from starting while still allowing the Allies to win.

Seems like Poots walked those rulings back, then. Probably for the better, SotF with those rulings was absolutely ridiculous.

Pic related, Poots' ruling on the topic back in 2019. It does seem like he changed his tune on a lot of the SotF reroll rulings, probably for the better, but yes he literally used exactly that example back then.
