Yeah I'm real curious where this'll wind up. I'd guess somewhere in Maryland, but Montgomery County is probably too expensive, so maybe a trip back to Anne Arundel? Hopefully not PG.

It's been funny seeing all the pearl clutching from those faggots over at Dakka Dakka though. They think it's unsafe because of Trump, not even realizing the uh, "demographic" make up of Maryland inside the beltway.

Recently I was thinking about alternative combat systems.

I remember someone talking about instead of HP the payer has a Jenga tower and he needs to remove peaces once hit, the skill is to remove peaces without the tower collapsing

So I started thinking.
For example what if the combat somehow involves cups and balls?

Instead of a D20+modifier nonsense why not change it up? Why not give a player 10 balls or legos or whatever and to win an encounter the player needs to land 2 balls in 1 cup?

There can be variants of this like a super hard encounter demands the player lands all 10 balls or what about reducing the size of the cup with the difficulty of combat?

What if we implement a fate system from Talisman for the players? What if legendary bosses have something like that for themselves? And can negate the players victory?

What if different monsters use different "balls" like for example some bone golems will be you throwing legos into cups and zombies are aluminum balls while naga can be gummy bears? That actually makes the monster feel different and not a copy pasted set of numbers. Also the different aerodynamics of these "balls" are part of the fun.

What do you think of the game One More Quest?

Undeniable proof that /tg/ will shit on every idea unless it comes out of the ass of a mega corporation and is in a shiny box then /tg/ will love it and defend it to death.

/tg/ is total shit. Actually I nominate /tg/ for the worst board on this website even the shit flinging cancer bards at least give you some advice or something helpful.
>>
>>97325464
Never played it, but it looks like fun for a board game night. However, I don't think it really does what ttrpgs do for me. They're two related but different itches to scratch. Its like how munchkin is very ttrpg adjacent, but is actually very obviously not one. One more quest seems a bit more in the middle but I still really don't know what problem the dexterity minigame is supposed to fix exactly within the ttrpg experience and that makes it hard to think of ways to implement it.
Having a goal is prerequisite for having a plan of implementation.
>>
>>97325464
I think your psychology around this thread is a bit off center. You gotta realize that tg is an anonymous medium. A large proportion of people who use 4chan are here because they aren't welcome or don't feel welcome on other media. This is usually the consequence of them being insufferable and belligerent. So a portion of replies to any thread are going to be a "screaming into the void" type deal where they just offload their issues by arguing. So whatever you post, some of the people here are going to put in a lot of effort to hate on it.

Also, tg isn't actually a monolith. Saying stuff like "undeniable proof that tg is bla bla" really doesn't seem productive for anything but ego repair after your idea garnered some negative comments. Given the sheer amount of virulent hatred for corporations here, saying that the whole board only loves corpo slop is also a bit of a stretch.

In the end, I think several people have tried to engage with your idea honestly. Albeit at differing levels of abrasiveness. You have been quite belligerent in return. Maybe take a proverbial chill pill and just step back and honestly assess the feedback you got and see if you can use it to further your concept.
I'd say the most poignant topics would be:

>that people don't understand the issue with dice that drives you to wish replacing it, so the solution direction isn't clear either.
>there is some disconnect between skill games and the roleplaying game, and people note that they value these things being tied together for coherence so it doesn't feel like you're doing two different unrelated tasks
>time management is a concern
>not everyone likes skill games, or having their player character depending on their (unrelated) skill of throwing. Meaning, your solution is probably pretty niche. Again this also ties into the first point. It would be helpful to know what problem you are solving for. Then people might be better capable of joining you in solving it.

alternative combat systems won't make a game more interesting, except when everyone is some active type who enjoys physical activity over sitting around, but those people rarely ever play tabletop.
what is the reasoning behind changing the system? would you also enjoy chess more if you had to throw the pieces at the board or your opponent?
the real question is, the age old question:
>in the age of automatic calculation in video games, and everyone being used to quick combat, how do you make turn based RPG combat not a hour long chore every time it happens?
the current solution is to remove trash encounters or handle them as a one turn skill check, and focus on important battles only. but even those can easily drag on forever, and there comes a point when nobody is invested into it anymore and just wants it to end. another solution I read about was "cinematic" battles: an imaginary camera constantly moves around the battlefield, showing one guy fighting the villain for a couple of rounds, then it moves over to the rest of the group preparing a ballista over several rounds to shoot the villain.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What are some systems or you would like to include or see included in a campaign, but haven't been able to? They don't have to be the main focus of the game, having them only as something on the side is okay.

>forgotten AD&D art
Yes, along with things like encumbrance, concealability, ammunition costs, and legality ratings that should "balance" big guns in d20 modern campaigns. These are all things that every DM I've seen just ignore. They just don't make DMs like they used to.
>>
>>97329672
>waste minutes debating with your DM how doing X thing fits path Y with effect Z
>>
>>97329672
Same as any flexible magic system; it can do literally anything, so the caster becomes the 'solution to every problem' character while everyone else plays second-fiddle and the party never have to get really creative finding ways to beat puzzles. The only real balancing factor is that it is too slow to use in the middle of combat, but there's a method of pre-preparing spells for rapid use, which turns it into a D&D style system where the wizard has to stop and prepare every couple of fights (this in turn is sort-of balanced in the originally intended genre by some uncertainty as to what the monsters might be vulnerable to, and the availability of guns and other powerful weapons which make combat spells a bit redundant). Also, some mechanics are very easy to exploit, especially in genres other than the originally intended wainscot horror.
If you want an even better version of the 'flavour' see Path and Book magic in Thaumatology. It isn't flexible, but it uses similar mechanics.
I'm not sure if there is a 'flexible but not the solution to every problem' system, but there have been many, many attempts at making flexible magic systems in GURPS and the later ones are at least a bit more refined. I think that Incantation Magic is probably the least open to abuse.

What do you think of it? It's basically Fallout with furries (Kipo didn't have robots or guns).

Other than giving you statblocks for characters like Shredder and Casey Jones, you're absolutely right that there's jack shit in the way of setting material to work with. After The Bomb has some setting baked in, but it doesn't give you a good set of tools to work with or specifically running post-apoc games. Instead you get a dozen pages of some minimalistic
>There's an island full of bird mutants
>over here is a bunch of towns I guess
>gators.
>there's a cartel of rodents I guess
before throwing a bunch of pretty flimsy adventure hooks at you that amount to a place with a few guys to fight, and sometimes you get specific information.

>>97329627
Two things come to mind in this situation:
1. A hand ax is not the same as a hatchet,
2. The hammer side of a hatchet is not designed to be swung in the same way with the same Force as the blade, the weight distribution is different, and the handle itself is ergonomically shaped to be swung the other way.

That being said I would have allowed it, but just -1 to hit (maybe damage if I was feeling frisky). Lotfp is already punishing enough in regards to combat.
