>absolute best case scenario fully-painted nu40k looks like THIS

How do we even turn the tide on this? How do we get back to the foamcut hills and rock towers and mesh fences and handcrafted bunkers of 1st-4th edition 40k? Not to mention less characters on DVD sized bases.

I mean god, GW don't even care for creating new plastic 40k terrain like they did 5th-7th, it's all laser cut MDF shit and rubber objective markers.

Where does this go in five more years?

White Wolf died. But where's the replacements? DnD has hundreds of clones. But where are all the vampire/mage/werewolf clones? Is because DnD is more generic and easier to copy?

If you think about what WoD offers and what a successor to WoD the same way Pathfinder was a successor (and competitor) to DnD would have to offer, there is no way to reasonably excuse dropping that amount of capital in an investment unless it's a fantasy universe. In the Urban Fantasy space, WoD has lore and more of a roleplay focus kind of covered for a lot of the popular supernatural monsters in a relatively edgy and interesting world. Anything trying to be a successor to WoD would need
>Strong alt-history focus with cool lore connections
>some degree of edge so that it doesn't feel watered down
>combat that isn't designed to be over as fast as possible
When you consider the potential market as well as the requirements to actually bother doing that you can see why Paradox was just interested in WoD to produce games with a good cost to profit ratio or passive income from passionate autists.
>>
>>97311197
>Is it because DnD is more generic and easier to copy?
It might be, honestly.
The bulk of dnd fluff is generic and shallow so you can copy it or replace it in another game easily, typical fantastic races, nondescript gods, standard magic. You can replace teiflings and warforged with demonettos and crab-people and you're golden.
WoD starts with generic ideas but then goes deep. Clans, factions, politics, histories. WW loved to write, even when they were writing garbage, they loved writing it, and anyone trying to beat them at their own game has to play that part of it too.
You also have to avoid getting sued while you do it.
I feel like anyone on this board could grab an SRD off itch and mockup a half dozen monster games with a shared urban fantasy setting and theoretical interoperability, but if you're not going to write like you're a tweenage girl with nothing better to do then you're already at a crippling disadvantage.
>>
>>97319080
The only thing you need is one or two writers willing to put in the effort to create a replacement. Corporations lack talent however.
>>97320635
Most of WoD stuff isn't even copyright, as in, 90% of their lore is literal historical data because it takes place in the real world unlike DnD. In theory is way easier to create a WoD clone than a DnD clone.

With lifespans ticking down again, private equity conquering even niche industries like youth sports venues and pet cremation services, the death of the middle class, etc people just don't have a taste for the idea of a grittier version of the real world anymore.

You can see this reflected in how people play DnD nowadays too. A lot of games are just vibing on Twitch and fantasizing about stuff like having a tiefling harem and running your own tavern. Even in games resembling traditional DnD with dungeon runs etc, players will do things like long-resting after every fight to make sure they can go into each battle at full strength since there's no longer a sense that you're conserving/budgeting resources. It would be really hard to sell people on settings like Dark Sun and Midnight.
>>
>>97322603
>people just don't have a taste for the idea of a grittier version of the real world anymore.
Where does this dumb idea comes from? People love when their struggles are represented and one of the main critiques of modern media is that doesn't portrait reality as it is and everything is extremely watered down.

You could also have a d4 that represents the height of the plane, with each plane type having different speeds for ascending/descending.
>>
>>97314894
Overthinking it a little... picture this. You've got 3 levels of height (high/mid/low). A Shift on the skid die results let you Ascend or Dive instead of shifting (incentive to roll more dice; this may involve different Skid dice now that I think about it). Extra attacks while Diving on targets (or shooting at Ascending targets/while Ascending on targets below your height).

>which was a problem in WHFB, like why the fuck would Lizardmen go to the Badlands? Why would Karl Franz be in Lustria? Etc

You know, I've heard this same line of reasoning many times over the years for why X or Y faction "doesn't fit" or Z conflict "couldn't" happen.

I actually think it boils down to both the people playing the games and the writers/game devs just lacking any ideas or creativity.

Because, aha, here's the fucking thing.

If it was so fucking impossible for Lizardmen to attack the old world, or Tomb Kings to end up in Lustria, how do you explain the Rampant fucking success of the Warhammer Total War games?

They sure as shit dont seem to "struggle to find a reason" or "justify it".
>>
>>97322066
>>bring back Corsairs instead which were from FW and nobody really cared about
Wrong. Corsairs were the original Rogue Trader Eldar. Every other space elf is mere reflection of the prime original article of pirate space elf.
>>
>>97322066
So Ynnari should be merged in with Exodites is what I'm hearing.
>>
>>97322466

>>
>>97322066
Funny thing is that the corsairs kit is suspected to have originally been a ynnari kit that they just renamed (evidence: mixture of craftworld and dark eldar gear, armor details on some models that match the Visarch's, lack of FW corsair details like the backpack wings and dissonance weapons)

Well, there are photographs from the early 20th century. It is a pretty disturbing phenomena. Without a working knowledge of written Hindi/Gujurati/any of the dialects of India for primary sources, getting a grasp on it can really on be done by the observations of British personnel. They characterize it as sort of a suicidal disregard for safety amongst the population, as a demonstration of bravery. If we didn't already get a Neo-Mughal book pounded out in short order, it would've been interesting to see something like this. You could compare it to the phenomenon of تَجَاهُل (tajāhul) (disregard) in the Arab world. Men will deliberately place themselves in positions that men from other cultures would regard as insanely perilous. Saddam's T-72's attacking coalition forces at the battle 73 Easting with their commander leading a flying column into the teeth of wire-guided anti-tank missiles and a group of Abrams comes to mind. Unlike in western cultures where similar acts are motivated by the potential for remaining safe, or to provide a solution to the dangerous problem, these sorts of things were done for personal glory-seeking. Might there be a Lemurian phenomena that's similar? Would be worth exploring in further writing.

Unless you were referencing the Juggernaut directly, its already in the game. The view I had of Lemuria initially was pretty anthetical to this kind of thing, however, I don't think it would be something widely used, or culturally encouraged, since the Cultivation mindset in the warrior caste requires you to pity that the weak cannot be strong opponents to you (which is completely different from taking pity *on* the weak, mind you) rather than outright hate them.
Degens would be free game, however, its obviously their fate not to amount to anything anyways.

It's something that ideally is founded on a strong level of engagement from the player while also relying on the player mentally disassociating themselves enough from their character that npcs turning against them or things going south for their PC doesn't personally bother them at all. And that's rare to find. Most people settle for the people who aren't super invested at all in their PC and would shrug their shoulders at this stuff, cause it works out better than with the guys who are a bit too engaged with the unfolding narrative and/or their PC's love life.

No, this isn't a thread about "how can I do souls in ttrpg", because picrel is how you can do it. What this thread IS is about this game in specific, and how it can be used to cover aspects of the Soulsbornering games that it doesn't already cover, as well as seeking knowledge from people who have played it already. The game itself is on 1d6/2d4 if you're not aware of it. I've run some test sessions of it and the combat system works, if a bit weirdly. For example, it's too easy to just rollspam through attacks, and certain classes and equipment don't fully match to the game content they represent.

For anyone who actually gives a shit, I'm working on an automatic sheet in Excel as well as a few fixes of my own - namely letting Fire Keeper start with the Coiled Sword which they can use as a weapon and catalyst so they're not completely defenseless out the gate. Additionally, prototyping Parry as a mechanic as well, requiring a 6+ Dice whilst wielding a shield or Parry-compatible weapon which inflicts a set amount of Stagger so you'd have to stack Parries on bigger enemies in order to get a full guard break. I'm also prototyping a nerf to Dodge given my earlier complaint about rollspam, making the Stamina cost increase per use in a round until it reaches 6.
>>
>>97321452
>I'm working on an automatic sheet in Excel
I've heard a rumour there's already an automatic way to play Dark Souls, it's so advanced, it's like Excel but it also makes pictures so you can see what you're playing as well. I think it's called a "viddeeyo game".
>>
Never tried this out as I didn't know this existed, I was wondering if there was anything like it. Will take a look at it when I find the time, but how does it deal with the concept of dying, enemies respawning and all that stuff?

Also, mechanics aside, it looks like something that really relies on both the GM and players to be into it to come out well.
