The idea of them being doomed to lose and good winning is fine, but that's an omniscient cosmological view. The actual characters should consider them pretty terrifying bad guys, but Morgoth is literally laughed at by the other Valar and bullied and Sauron is punked on by a dog and Gandalf treats fighting him and destroying the ring as urgent as having afternoon tea. I prefer playing neutrals. Having characters with gray morals makes interacting with the world feel a bit more free. I wouldn’t call them anti-heroes though, just normal jackoffs that got pushed into a situation.

He actually was just a normal guy that studied magic books and learned how to perform magic without any natural ability of his own, demon pacts, demon or deity parenthood of any kind.
