I'm genuinely surprised they didn't turn the namarti razor guys into a full unit. Really feels like they were a test.

This seems like such an easy slam dunk and I have also wondered why they didn't even try to do something like this. Both units straight to legends.

What was the last edition of 40k before they started advancing the timeline? I hear people talk about 2017 as when that kind of thing really started.

I'd like to acquire the rulebook and codices from whichever edition it was before they started the influx of heresy (really just new fluff elements I don't like, but I'm sticking with calling it heresy). If I can't find a good answer, I'll just get 3rd or 4th edition, from when I used to play.

For the record, the stuff I am talking about as heresy
>inventing a random techprist (okay Archmagos) that could improve the work of the Emperor as a way to start dropping in new models everywhere
>female Custodes
>generally advancing the timeline from less 10 seconds to midnight to a point where pimarchs are returning in the 42nd millennium and some people kinda sorta unironically hope again

I prefer the old "no, it's all fucked, the Emperor is always silent as the grave because he's fucking DEAD, there will be no happy endings, nobody can possibly win, and everyone is about to lose in their own spectacular fashion" version of 40k.
>>
>>97255972
Well, the timeline advanced with the 3rd war of Armageddon and the 13th Black Crusade campaigns (which would creep over the line into M42), but they later set those back and retconned the results. Rogue Trader also started with events in M41. year 987 and things would tick along with 988, 989 and so on for a while before locked at 999.

The timeline was only truly static for a few years in the mid-2000s.
Anyway it was 8th that introduced Primaris and jumped things because GW was in a hole with 7th following Tom Kirby's increasingly disastrous leadership.

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

There's too much competitive orientated balance in the game, it doesn't have a Warzone bone in its body, the only thing that's Mutant Chronicles about it, is the models. I got a taste of the rules long before the game release and all I can say about it is that it's balanced. But Warzone isn't supposed to be balanced, it's meant to be broken.
>>
>>97255896
Yeah, I don't buy that. Being a balanced game isn't what's holding it back, its the fact that its a 20+ year old niche franchise that has been relying on literally 2 guys to develop and promote for the last few years. The only talk I have seen about it, other than the odd painting blog talking about the minis, has been one or two YT channels doing a video or two to show the game off and Facebook posts. It really needs a community ambassador to help show it off.

>my players say they love my campaign
You're doing something right.
>but im fucking tired
>it just feels like im trying to do something and never quite getting there
Sounds like you're a perfectionist. This isn't a hobby in which perfectionism is going to be particularly rewarding. As a DM, you'll never be able to run the perfect session because players will reach different conclusions than you expected. As a player, you'll never have enough time to reach the perfect plan, and the rest of the table will get annoyed with you if you try to get there.
>and i dont wanna prep or at least not games
>i wanna imagine something else making encounters plots etc
>or just restart the same campaign with new players to perfect it further
>but not have to deal with the actual game at the same time
Again, your game will never be perfect. If you don't enjoy prepping the game, find a way to run with low preparation. If you're unsatisfied with the results, it may simply be that you don't enjoy DMing.
>i just wanna improv and go with the flow and see where things land
>but these idiots always have the dumbest ideas too
Yeah, you just don't enjoy DMing. The utter idiocy of player ideas and watching them scramble to right a ship that they themselves capsized in calm waters is one of the greatest joys of a DM.
>and there's clearly a "that guy" that I should kick but he has never really done anything wrong he's just cognitively limited

What is the correct way to handle female priestess? Historically women weren't part of the clergy, so you don't have a lot of references to drawn from in regards to their attitude.

>Weren't ancient greek and shinto priestess glorified cheerleaders with no real power inside religion?

No, at least not the greek ones. They did their thing exactly like men, even if they were still women (AKA their rights were absolutely, definitely not the same). I think in general terms the fact is aside perhaps for the greatest temples the women's ones were "minor" roles, but most temples overall were minor ones.
I don't think the priesthood had uh, glass cielings over which there were men overseeing women, but this is not really a thing that happened anyway: poleis and their temples were not separate affairs, there was not a global catholic-like hierarchy.

I'm not sure if we have solid proof about the nips' ones in ancient ones.

How would you implement undead PCs in a game, in a way that feels flavorful and meaningfully different from regular PCs?
7 replies omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>97255834
The changes you want are not in the rule, but in the table
If all the other players act as if the undead character smells from day one, that's flavour
If you write the rule "the character smells" and nobody cares and only comes to play when they try to sneak past the city guard, that's not a rules problem is a you problem

First off, I agree with you.

But, what if undead PCs also don't make death saves? Like how in 3.5 they don't go negative, they just die at zero.

Ironically makes the undead PC more afraid of violence and its consequences than the living ones.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Might be, I think if you're really clear about difficulty it should be mostly fine but having run some one shots recently with mixed expectation groups it can be difficult to keep things copacetic.

...was also the first third-party one, with its first product released in 1976. Judges Guild's Wilderlands of High Fantasy is the only setting you'll ever need.

Yeah, like the other anon said, we're not due for another thread for a while.

I like how Lancer does it in that you can easily apply templates to NPCs to make them more threatening or weaker or more unique. Throw a Veteran or Elite on an enemy to make them stand out a bit more and give them a standout ability. Throw Ultra on something you want to turn into a boss with a game changing weapon or tech.

Yeah, or "increased criticals" or something. Agreed, in most mecha anime it seems like the spray of smaller projectiles often tend to damage smaller, more sensitive bits of a bigger target. Like that Clay Bazooka vs Asshimar clip, a good example.

>"How do you do Ace Customs? Are there any? Do they have improved performance, or are the exact same as other mechs with a different finish?"
In Mekton Z, you can build anything (pretty much) so you could just design a version of whatever grunt unit that's little better. Faster, more maneuverable, better armor or weapons, whatever.

There's also "Maneuver Pool," which is a metacurrency pilots developed when their Piloting skill gets above 5. There's a Mekton tech feature called A.C.E. (Actuator Control Electronics) which multiplies a pilot's Maneuver Pool. So an ace pilot with a Piloting of 7 in a grunt unit would have a 2 points in his Maneuver Pool, but in an ace custom unit with 2.5x A.C.E. would have 5 points in his Maneuver Pool.

The Gundam RPG that was based on Mekton Z actually called the A.C.E. system "Ace Custom" and called the Manuever Pool "Ace Points." I thought was a great idea and I wish I'd thought of it.

>Halflings to do the farming
>Dwarves to do the smithing and mining
>Gnomes to do the researching
>Elves to do magic
>Humans to do the fighting (and thus, the ruling)
This seems the obvious perfect order to things. Humans don't want to be the peasant farmers, we want to be the knights and lords, but somebody has to farm, somebody has to smith, etc. Why not have the other races do the menial peasant stuff that they specialize in anyways?

So 80-90% of the population is halflings? Because that’s the percentage who are farmers. Makes more sense halflings are a servant class, as they are excellent cooks and gardeners, the hard work of plowing the fields is best left to men. Men can also be the warrior class, as hardy peasant boys are good stock to make soldiers.

I prefer the races to be climate/region based than job based. It makes no sense for Dwarves, Gnomes, and Elves to not have someone that makes the food, or Elves, gnomes, and Humans to not have someone to make pottery and iron.

Unless it's a very low magic setting, the people with magic would absolutely be doing the ruling. Human infantry and cavalry would get demolished by a bunch of wizards firing volleys of magic missile and magic missile is far from the most potent magic imaginable. Imagine the Battle of Nagashino only worse.

You don't turn peasants into warriors, that's a myth, most medieval soldiers were either gentry or higher in social status or straight up mercenaries

Sure, why not? Humans don't wanna do farming work if we can avoid it and we need lots of the peasant class so it makes sense we'd breed halflings for that purpose
