Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. Has anyone ever run or thought about running a one-shot D&D and/or Pathfinder game where you used ALL of the optional and niche D20 mechanics?I'm talking Sanity, Taint, Flaws, etc. It'd be a complete cluster fuck, but those can be some of the best games.
>>97172773>they are known for being sluts that secretly love being gangraped by orcs and goblinsYou are confusing elves for yourself.
>>97230113>SanityI've never seen a table use the sanity system, which is funny because I had a DM once who run a short "horror" story using a homebrew system of his (he had no idea the sanity system existed).>TaintI've used it in a campaign, but I wouldn't combine it with the sanity system (since they both kinda fit the same niche, with a different flavor).>FlawsI use them every time and my group considers them a "default" choice when making characters.>Spell PointsI have two people in the group that never want to use spell slots ever again after they learnt about spell points, and honestly I don't even mind (when I DM).Anyways, I've used several subsystems (both as a player and a DM), but using ALL of them... yeah no, never thought about it and not really interested to be honest.

Moloch's Fun Park Edition>What is Trench Crusade? An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.>What Trench Crusade is notTC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.>What's the QRD on the background? The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.>How do I get started? All the files are free online:https://www.trenchcrusade.com/rules/Comment too long. This is a highly niche question, but: what's the best TTRPG anthology you've ever read, and what made it good in your opinion?

How has a wife/girlfriend joining the group affected your games?
>>97229283i'm not mad at all, just being silly it could be, who knows?
My ex joined my group, played for a while, she had fun, but she did later tell me after we broke up that my friends would stare at her tits and during the game she tried to force me to kick a sperg out of the group when we played at the spergs house and it was our only option for a variety of reasons. Then told me she'd never liked any of my group and she didnt enjoy playing. Even though she clearly did but whatever. Ironically she had an animal companion I could never find a figurine for until after we broke up they suddenly made several of them for D&D and if the right size category too. I find that ironic.
>>97229306Nah you seem perturbed. Why?
>>97229487i promise im not mad im actually in a really good mood cause its nearly christmaswhat are you getting at that though? if there's something you want to say you can say it
Had good nights where the group brought their women for boardgame night. Even played some heavier games and not just your run of the mill party games. But TTRPGs are pretty much boys only and no girl has shown interest which isn't a problem for me.
How do we fix Steampunk?
>>97196423You really just need to tone down the fashion a little. That's what usually tips it over the edge into being lame.
>>97198341Anything by Jules Verne. Of course, the issue there is that he lived when Steam tech was the newest thing, so at the time his works were just speculative fiction. It's only after steam faded that his works became the basis for a new psudogenre
>>97198980>A good method is to replace coal with some other sort of unobtainium mechanism that can more efficiently power steam engines. Most modern power plants (Nuclear, Coal, Natural Gas, etc.) are in actuality giant steam engines turning electric motors in order to generate electricity. The steam age has not really ended it was just hidden from sight. If you want steam punk to actually work you need to come up with a reason that pumping a high pressure aerosol of liquid vapor through pipes is a better energy transfer method than transmitting electricity through metal wires.
>>97198341You know what, I don't how steampunk fashion/subculture started either. It seems to me it must have started in the US but that's as far as I can go; there must be a reason beyond some music bands adopting the steam era adventurer aesthetics back in the 2000s, but I just don't know what it was>>97230255In Dragonmech it all boils down into "steam powered shit was invented by dwarves and they're so good at it everything just works out", the book just tells you not to overthink it and just enjoy the rideit also implies that the same dwarves that invented steam powered mechs also know about electricity generation and nuclear powered engines, but won't tell anybody about it because it's just too dangerous to let people like humans or goblins get their hands on that kind of knowledge it's also implied that there was an ancient dwarven empire that nuked themselves into the stone age and that's the main reason they keep that kind of tech under wrapsi'm personally fine with that; i just want to run a high fantasy adventure with mechs and sheit
>>97213529That not playing it straight. That is being retarded and not understanding punk is sticking to the man. Making it into /pol/ retardation is not fixing anything
Would love to share some YTers I like to use for inspiration. Looking for anyone you find helpful. Preferably smaller creators and not restricted to 5e. I’ll submit three that I really enjoy while I’m doing prepFirst I’ll submit is Desk and Dorks. The channel is made by a medieval historian and combines his knowledge of subjects to enhance games. I particularly like his take on Bronze Age fantasy and building better town guards

>>97226391No it's about giving Rockerboy tangible bonuses that help in the minute to minute gameplay. Not loose "favours" that are open to interpretation and put the onus on the GM/player to actually come up with something interesting. It's lazy game design.I dunno, if the point of the Rockerboy is they have access to a fanbase that supplies them with favours, then why not make them similar to the Exec?
>>97223227What is the best SR edition?
>>97229011Depends entirely on the person. I like 2e because shadowrun, to me, will always be the early 90s roc paperbacks. I've also heard good things about 4th/5th. It seems like the most recommended is 20th anniversary.Anarchy 2e looks promising, as well, if you're down for a more narrative game.
