Have you tried Space Gits? It's an unusual skirmish game by Mike Hutchinson (made Gaslands). It seems to be the ultimate casual skirmish that you play while chugging beer.

A lot of mechanics are dexterity based, for example instead of losing health or wounds, your fighters add D6's to their dice tower, which has to be moved alongside them (and when it drops over, they drop down).
Shooting is also quirky - you roll dice equal to the number of shots and then trace lines between a shooter and each die to see if you hit the target. Landed shots use die's result, so a single roll is made to-hit and to-wound, which I think is neat.

I'm going to try it this thursday. My only two complaints so far is that close combat seems bland (its basically rock-paper-scissors) and it's really easy to deny it by spamming shove. My other complaint is that the rulebook's art is atrocious vomit.

Everything else checks out though, it even seem to have a basic campaign system.

No Inspire action is pretty meh for Social Influence. Teamwork is also way too strong, I'd cap it somehow.

Other than that, I have a way better time with it than 3e because it actually feels playable and doesn't try and obfuscate the differences between Exalt types by breaking them up into hundreds of fiddly literal who charms.

IMO they named too many of the Eight generals. Also they did that thing with Ipithymia that they did with the Lover and made her sexless.

At that point, just make a different character so that people who liked her can feel free to port her forward without much hassle.
>>
>>97221979
For whatever reason I didn't mind what the changes to Ipithymia nearly as much as I did those to Lover. In part it's probably because I always found loli genderbent UCS sex street pretty silly, and in part because Ipithymia, unlike Lover, at least gets a pretty interesting new deal to replace what was removed. It's true that just having the new Ipithymia be a new character with a new name would've been better, though.

Moloch's Fun Park Edition

>What is Trench Crusade?
An alternate weird history 28mm/32mm tabletop skirmish game still in a pre-release playtesting phase but with the full release slated for this year. Based on the art and lore of Mike Franchina, whose illustrations you may have seen floating around on /tg/ for a several years now, and designed by Tuomas Pirinen, one of the original creators of Mordheim. It's grimdark, it's visceral, it's awesome, and it's very Blanchitsu.

>What Trench Crusade is not
TC not an excuse for you to discuss IRL religion, history that didn't occur in the game, culture war shit, or discord bullshit on /tg/. Keep it on topic.

>What's the QRD on the background?
The Knights Templar turned heretic and opened the Gates of Hell when they took Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Over 800 years later the war is still ongoing as technology has developed to a pseudo diesel-punk WW1 standard and a third of Humanity has sided with the Infernal Princes.

It would be odd for an in-universe map to show heretic powerbases closer to the authors location but not further away where it would matter less. I would suspect that those lands are subjected to chevauchee's sauntering out from the blockading forces of Alamut based in Georgia. Probably a lot of heretic Scythians (which sounds awesome), plus whatever naval raiders are in the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, but have yet to take, or haven't attempt to take, a swath of territory and hold it successfully. Maybe there's a hidden Hellgate that's on the agenda, but only time will tell.

This is different than the regular osrg as due to rampant trolling from a handful of bad actors, discussion is impossible.

Sometime after 2013's 4th printing and before 2019's errata v5.1, so probably the 5th printing in 2018.
>>
>>97221591
>>97221664
Sometime after the first print, but by the fourth. Errata v4.4 lists:
"Movement Restrictions: Whether or not the battle armor is equipped with magnetic clamps, no vehicle may expend UMU, VTOL, WiGE or Jumping MP while carrying mechanized battle armor, and no ’Mech may expend UMU MP."
This was changed to the text I posted here >>97221567 in the 10th printing. (That's likely why it ISN'T in CI, as that box released before the 10th print, and never got errata'd.

Eisensturm is a flying Atlas with dual gauss rilfes.
Though I think FWL's Shiva is pretty good as well. It also has a dual gauss configuration but on top of that also has a pulse laser one that absolutely shreds units when making ground attacks (remember that ASFs attacking ground units always count as attacking from short range, so you always get the -2 from pulses). It does have far less armor than the Eisensturm, but you get 3 Shivas at the BV of 2 Eisensturms, and regardless of the armor tye Eisensturm still gets one-shotted by an unlucky lawdart roll.

Wanted to talk about advice on GMing, settings you prefer, and styles or issues you as a GM have. I generally tend to prefer dark fantasy or sci-fi settings rather than trying something a little different.

I also tend to have a style, depends on the system though, where i have a combat heavy session or two and then a more intrigue/exploration focused session. I have been working on how to better balance games I run, but trying to tie that to timing a game session gets tricky at times.

Another issue I noticed is that puzzle solving or investigative games can be a lot harder for a player to get into the mindset for than the dm. It is easy to think everything you planned makes sense when you thought it out in your head but the players might not have the same line of thought.

>>97218290
To echo some of what >>97218365 said, you don't need to dedicate sessions to intrigue/exploration.
If the goblins in a dungeon don't attack the PCs on sight, and instead scheme with the players to try to get them to kill their boss, that's intrigue. If the players are discovering things in the new rooms of a dungeon, that's exploration.
Intrigue is just 'talking to NPCs that have their own motives', and exploration is just 'discovery'. It's on the players to engage with that.

As far as investigation games go, that tends to work better in dedicated systems, but you basically want to flood the players with clues. Remember that the players aren't actually Sherlock Holmes, and so if you're expecting the players to make the deductions, you need to give them an appropriately difficult mystery.
You also want to avoid including a purposeful red herring. The players are already likely to pick out the wrong person as the culprit, so you don't want to muddy things further by trying to trick them on purpose.
>>
I strongly recommend reading the Kobold Guides. They're really top-notch. Check the Rchive for them.
>>
>>97218290
I've learned not to lock main plotline progression behind puzzles; like a door or something.
But "best possible ending" will be, as well as all the best loot.
Competent evil wizards don't just leave their best shit lying around in storage cupboards with nothing but a deadbolt and a green slime to protect it.
Best thing is to give your players inscrutable hints; a map with a cypher, a key to an unknown lock, or rumours of a treasure in a jungle ziggurat.

Take a few of these elements and blend them together.
With skill, you can make your players "feel" like they solved a puzzle even when they didn't, just by giving them the components piecemeal; real puzzles should be presented alongside physical props; something tactile like a printout or a real sliding puzzle box.

That's scratching some old memories. Isn't that the Paladin that some fag in 2009 or something posted with a big sob story about how it belonged to his dad that recently passed away, and then a bunch of anons in the thread figured out that the story was bullshit cause the character sheet didn't make a lick of sense with AD&D rules?
>>
>>97218290
Almost all the problems I see people have with RPGs are communication problems. Talk with your fucking players. Note that that means listening as well. Be clear what you expect from them, what you want the focus of the game to be, what sort of tone you want, and so on. Don't expect them to read your mind.

I know they didn't tell you this, but. If you root around for a bit in the past threads and know the PDF sharethread customs, there's a trove of all the rules for KDM. You can find readily-available recasts as well as 3DP proxies/scans elsewhere for a lot cheaper than plastic.
That said there's not much else that does the highly-tactical PvE boss fights and freaky monsters thing you seem to be looking for. Sadly. You could try to scrounge up the official Dark Souls board game. Or hit up /3DPG/ for information on STLs inspired by stuff like Blasphemous and Souls. Be aware that they're pretty fucking cancerous.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

Part of the AD&D appeal is precisely the monk-like dedication to parse rules from obscure musings from half-forgotten paragraphs in the DMG. OSRIC 3 was always going to be a betrayal of sorts, but I believe it's a needed one in a moment where the original PHB and DMG are available as PoD and retroclones such as OSE or Dragonslayer are slowly but surely evolving into AD&D-lite.

>Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that focuses on simulation gameplay and has a black trenchcoat aesthetic.

Cyberpunk RED is the fourth edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG that is set after Cyberpunk 2020 following the Fourth Corporate War, focuses on more balanced gameplay and is more streamlined but has less content.

You can discuss Shadowrun here too because I also feel bad for those guys.

Is Shadowrun 6e decent? I heard the release corebook was trash, but since then they've released two updated editions that fix alot of the problems.

I want something Cyberpunk adjacent to run for my group. Getting tired of doing another Red campaign and figure Shadowrun is just Cyberpunk with higher power scaling and more build variety. Basically the things I try to homebrew into Red anyway.
>>
>>97221936
Unless they fundamentally altered the core systems my understanding was that 6e was irredeemable garbage that played like FATE; in which case you could have just played fate and cut out the middle-man.
>>
>>97221960
Okay cool. I'll avoid and look for something else or wait for that Anarchy 2.0 to come out. Preview looked decent.

Also off topic, but why do designers have a hard on for rules lite "narrative" style games these days? Why is there such a big push to reinvent the wheel instead of just reiterating and improving on what previously worked.
>>
>>97221936
Gobbet, my beloved.
>>
>>97221975
There's this idea that there's a barrier to popularity in complexity; and that the simpler a game is the more money it's going to make. Not only is this completely wrong, they're often stupidly tearing out most of the interesting systems and mechanics and leaving behind dull ones because they weren't complicated.

RED thankfully didn't make this mistake, not entirely. It's simpler, but there's plenty going on to keep people interested without also being in modifier hell (though I feel a lot of GMs I've played with are terrified of applying circumstantial modifiers, so it's whatever). There are other flaws in the system, but the bones are good and you can build it up where it needs bulk.

Tradition is by definition a living thing. It is cultural continuation, the passing down of cultural elements from one generation to the next. If such continuation doesn't exists anymore then we are not talking about tradition. We are talking about history.

Whereas cyberpunk was an aesthetic but also a social commentary on unrestrained hedonism/corporate greed and the consequences thereof, steampunk is just an aesthetic, which is why it's so hollow and why it mostly appeals to cosplayers. There's no substance so it's nebulous and vague, which makes it easier to get into but less poignant.

>steampunk is just an aesthetic
Steam punk deals with themes of rapid industrialization, colonialism, Victorian class structures, the impact of anachronistic advanced technologies, such as the "difference engine" would have on the world at large. Steam punk isn't just cyberpunk with brass googles it's a genre of alternative history, a fact people sadly forget.
