Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy?
>A world rocked by cataclysm
>landscapes filled with chaos and wonder
>mage storms
>An enduring mystery; what happened, and what happened in the intervening centuries?
>An atmosphere of hope and renewal, as heroes rise, and mysteries are investigated.
>Darkness and evil await in corners and ruins, like pools of dank water waiting for the sun
>the brink of a New Age
Interesting setting? What elements would you include?
I'm just gonna throw zombies at them.

Falls and disasters are part of every culture, every genre, and every story when you reach that far, and it's dumb. The extinction of the dinosaurs apes the fall of the roman empire, therefore, Jurassic Park is post apocalyptic, but only if you pay attention. You do pay attention, right?
>>
>>97222363
>That far back
If you are in pseudo medival times the fall of pseudo Rome isn't that far back. In the same way the dark ages after the fall of mycynean culture absolutely qualifies as post apoc.
>Jurassic Park is post apocalyptic,
It is for the dinosaurs.

>Worldbuilding is an extremely small part of running a game
It's actually fundamental to it. If you don't do proper worldbuilding, then you won't be prepared for when players do the unexpected, you'll lose immersion when you start making contradictory and disjointed decisions that don't fit what's already been offered, and you'll ultimately fail as a GM. These are cases many of us have experienced when we're flying by the seat of our pants due to lack of appropriate forethought into the world, but I can guess why you haven't...
>>
>>97222409
>you won't be prepared for when players do the unexpected
What players can do will ideally be covered by the rules of the game (see: "the character creation and progression options, the challenges they face, and the mechanics associated with the game structure" that you ignored).
If not, that's on you for choosing (or making) a poorly designed game; it does not suddenly make worldbuilding more important to a game than it actually is.

>making contradictory and disjointed decisions that don't fit what's already been offered
A well-designed game won't contradict itself in how it runs. When choosing or making a game, make sure it is clear about what can be done with it. "Games" that don't have mechanics beyond "ask your storyteller" are more likely to be disjointed than something with airtight rules.

>when we're flying by the seat of our pants due to lack of appropriate forethought into the world
"Flying by the seat of your pants" is the consequence of a poorly designed game, or a system that isn't even a game at all.
When there's proper forethought in the mechanics, everything else falls into place.

Perhaps try designing a game to run, instead of trying to write novels or performing improv theater. You'll realize that games don't need as much masturbatory worldbuilding when you do.

But once again, you just want to have your off-topic collaborative writing with impunity, despite there being multiple other places for you to plop out your shit.

Bonk, apparently.
I gave some games to a buddy who is a teacher for a board gaming club he started for students. Bonk had to be banned because it caused fights every time it was played.

Bonk is a game for 2 or 4 players. You rotate ramps on your side to drop metal balls onto the field. You use the metal balls to knock a wooden ball into your opponents goal.

There are only a handful of metal balls, so if you spam them, they go across the board and now your opponent has those balls and can take their time setting up shots until some metal balls make it to your side.

This, as it turns out, is a mechanic that leads to autistic rage and a lot of board game players are somewhat autistic to begin with. 2 players? Not much of an issue. You get four players and your partner is a ball spamming dipshit or sucks at hitting the target? It takes a shockingly short amount of time before that Tism kicks in. Violently. Especially among children with zero impulse control.

Why is it so common for fantasy rpgs that try to do the "Deep Lore" stuff to always default to Gnosticism or H.P. Lovecraft in a trench coat?

Simulation theory was implied in both Star Ocean 1 and 2. The problem with 3 was that they tried to turn it into a mid-game twist and that made a mess of the game's story.

White Wolf's games are heavily rooted in Christian mythology and Gnosticism is basically Christianity/Judaism deep lore, so it really should come as no surprise here.
But yeah, sure, I get what you're saying, seen plenty of it as well.

I think it's largely because the core themes of Gnosticism are
>reality isn't exactly what it appears to be
>god(s) are lying to you
While the core them of HPL is
>there are forces/entities/civilisations out there that operate on an entirely different level we can barely comprehend
And those really are kind of the most obvious angles if you're trying to write some major, plot-twist "deep lore" for your setting

Another reason I see is there's probably a pretty big correlation between people who are into the concept of deep lore (and thus want to include it in their setting) and people who are into /x/ stuff (and thus are probably aware of Gnostic stuff and think it's some extra cool secret knowledge they'll be extremely original for ripping off)

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image. Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: How often do you use an official GURPS setting? Which are your favorites?

Harry Potter is just standard Magic where magery has a gadget limitation for wands.
>>
>>97222145
True. I mentioned it because it was the first 'manaless' system that came to mind.
>>97222175
The spellcasting speed is about right, as well as the piecemeal nature of spells, but wizards doesn't seem limited by FP/EP and learning individual spells seems very easy, children learned Wingardium Leviosa in a single class.
>>
>>97222175
>>97222185
Also Wizards can cast spells without wand, it's just easier to do so.
Under standard magic system, I guess wands could be several levels of gadget Magery. Having it increases skill levels with all spells by a large margin, so even dabblers can cast spells but to do so without it a wizard needs to study the spell a lot.
I guess it could explain why not even very talented mages like Dumbledore and Voldemort bothers with wandless magic.

Whereas cyberpunk was an aesthetic but also a social commentary on unrestrained hedonism/corporate greed and the consequences thereof, steampunk is just an aesthetic, which is why it's so hollow and why it mostly appeals to cosplayers. There's no substance so it's nebulous and vague, which makes it easier to get into but less poignant.
>tl;dr it's shallow
>>

Steam punk deals with themes of rapid industrialization, colonialism, Victorian class structures, the impact of anachronistic advanced technologies, such as the "difference engine" would have on the world at large. Steam punk isn't just cyberpunk with brass googles it's a genre of alternative history, a fact people sadly forget.

I’m a bit torn on that issue. On one hand, it would really suck to die in the middle of a game after two hours of play, especially without a backup character. On the other hand, I admit it takes away some of the tension knowing that the GM will go to great lengths to prevent you from dying.

That's completely wrong, you absolute retard. People reproduce MORE in times of strife and duress, plenty of soldiers experience "battle boners" due to surges of adrenaline, and the battlefield itself is a hotbed of rape of enemy civilians and combatants alike.

Depends what your definition of prude means, but the ideal elven characterization when it comes to their sensuality is that: elves understand and readily accept they are the most physically attractive race and they take pride in their beauty. Flowers, sunsets, and rainbows don't hide themselves away behind layers and neither do elves - but elves also aren't rampant exhibitionists since they aren't whores and won't show just anyone the goods.

Light elves would wear form fitting and thin clothes that show off a lot of skin but ultimately would leave everything but the curves up to the viewer's imagination. Dark elves would show more skin but they too would keep covered up since they're not common street walkers to be oogled at by their lessers.

IRL examples would be women who wear yoga pants and tank tops to the gym (light elves) vs women who wear spandex shorts and sports bras (dark elves). You basically already know what their bodies look like but there's enough left covered up.

Ordered the Void 2.0 box set on Friday. Anyone else picked up any Void from Seb Games?

I remember back in the day the Viridian plastics were super handy for conversions (I still have some Viridian rifles in my bits box) but never actually played a game or put together an army.
