The likelihood of two d12s matching is actually exactly the same as a d12 matching a d4. You're essentially saying that only the larger die matters.

What if, instead, you rolled the two dice per the races, and impregnation occurred if either die was a 1?
(Or if either was a 2 or less, depending on the odds you're looking for. Or if both were 2/3/4 or less, if you want the feeling of the dice cooperating.)

Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games.

Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!

One thing I wanted to do was have a necromancer who used a giant's skeleton as a mech. Unfortunately I never could find a way to fit it in to a setting nor got a chance to play a character like that

Found an old idea I had for a fantasy setting a while back lol. The idea was that the world, Ter, had just undergone an industrial revolution, which saw the defeat of the old elf/dwarf nations in a series of revolts. Made some shitty blub for it, so feel free to laugh.

It is the dawn of the New Age. For centuries, the Elderkin held dominion over Ter.

Yet now, the age of the Elderkin and the arcana wanes. The hum of machines rises from the sprawling cities of men.

Smog clouds darken the skies. Factories churn, guns roar, and the earth trembles beneath the march of iron-clad armies.

Across Ter, the old magics flicker and fade. The old gods grow silent and cold, replaced by industry. Where once the songs of the Elderkin rang out, cries of revolution resound.

Nations fracture, new ideologies rise and faiths are tested. Gunpowder and the arcane alike tear the land asunder. Ancient creatures stirred by this upheaval slink back from forgotten shadows, eager to feast upon the dying world.

To live in Ter now is to witness the end of an era, and the birth of a new: the final twilight of magic, the ruthless dawn of industry, and the coming storm of war that will decide the fate of all.

To add on to this, the setting pretty much is the old world, and is currently in the 1780-1800's ish in terms of progress. The industrial revolution in this setting has introduced things like the steam engine, early bolt action rifles, and other inventions of this time. Pretty much this industral revolution gave the human states of the time (mostly elf vassal states or fringe kingdoms) a economic and technological advantage over the elderkin (elves) who where still fighting with swords and magic and where too arrogant to adapt to anything. When some of the vassal states started to step out of line, the elves (currently in a succession crisis) decided that nothing would legitimise the new dynasty like a quick war against the savages. This turned out to be a big mistake (elven society had grown decadent and arrogant) and the elves got absolutely butchered and the conflict quickly devolved into trench warfare. Eventually the elves adapted and with the help of several elven states and dwarf clans, where able to defeat most of the upstart human states. However they quickly found that technology had spread across the world and now even more of their vassals where in revolution, and even other races, like the orcs had started to get their hands on it. Now the elves have lost most of their empire, are no longer the major players and are pretty much hated by everyone.

Have an idea for a fantasy rpg world that I've been working on for a while. Basically just filling out a text doc with ideas. I have it in my head, I've tried using free map making things, but they're very jank and not really to the scale I want to explore. I want to make a fully explorable planet, but also have places of dense interest with sub themes, (weird wild west, far east inspired places, steam punk victorian flavored places, wild jungle tree top dwelling places, etc). I'm basically just ripping ideas directly from all of my favorite fantasy franchises and blatantly mashing them together, but also blending them and remixing them into an original setting. I would like to find someone smarter than me to help me condense this into a more cohesive idea, but I also don't want to get ripped off. I also want it to be an extremely slow reveal of the world as its explored. I would like to make it compatable with DnD and PF and other popular ttrpg systems, and maybe adapt it to novels and stuff. I want to include a pokemon style element type theme to everything, but boiled down to various combinations of earth, wind, fire, water, and everything be based off of a variation of these base elements. I also have a source of the strangeness and magic in the world that makes logical sense in a scifi fantasy sort of way. Like a kernel of origin for all the weirdness to act as the mcguffin and the driving force of the world.

I didn't know Silent Legions had that sort of generator. Is it worth finding for that alone? Is the rest of the book(s) worthwhile?

Unfortunate but true, the writing room in probably ankle deep in good ideas discarded for being politically uncomfortable.

>>96469749
Just make it DG in a different country. Every structure like that is going to be stocked with bleak pragmatists across the middle layer, and controlled by weird ideologues at the top, from which your players should be fully insulated anyway.
>>
>>96470566
The game inside Silent Legions is not worth it. The sandbox generation is! It let's you generate a pantheon or two of elder gods, alien species cults and artifacts. Then you plug these into into your adventure locations using the Tag system. This gives you possible schemes, enemies allies etc etc. Then you can use the investigation generator that gives you further ideas to put it together, not dissimilar to a shotgun scenario maker. Then using your own intuition you bring it all together to create the grander conspiracy and, tada! You got your very own mythos sandbox!

Im excited because im trying an open table, with agents coming and going. I'll have a sort of communal corkboard where they can piece together what they know do future agents can be let in on the skinny.

Bitter Sickness can be a boon. Since yours is not that bad and you can find a cure for it with event, making you a miraculous healer if you start helping others afflicted with it.
Wereplague is an annoying but curable by normal means (free-ish points with decent parents).
Missed Shape gimps you but you'll probably get around it somehow in the long run if you have a solid plan.
Hybrid is manageable.
Misalliance is just min-maxer tool.
Eternal Curse is pretty bad but plenty of dark elves still kicking around with it.
Meandering Thought is you might as well kill yourself and shove your ass inside the sword option.

So have a bit of a scene I wrote while I'm waiting to be able to buy silk song. Nothing that important. Mostly just venti messing around and a glimpse at development.

The night sky shimmered overhead, The moon was bright and large, like a nightlight in the sky against the perpetual purple that seemed to hang over the endless sea.

Venti sighs looking up at it. The steady roar of traffic behind him ever going. He stares for a few minutes before deciding that was enough staring. Might as well take a look around the island. See what needed to be done.

He turns stepping off the beach. Approaching the highway, a endless stream of cars barreling down it
A step onto the air, and then another. The cultivator walks casually up the air over the stream of eternal traffic. Looking towards the mountain on the islands center.

The sect rose at a plateau near the top. A small temple like thing. Perhaps it could use a few more pillars made for it. Oh but... he did spend most of last night furnishing its inner hall. Something else could use his attention for now. Maybe the harbor? No he didn't remember that much at all, And making something wholesale would be a little bothersome for now. Maybe Ordin temple? Though the sect was already in pretty much the only place it'd fit. Perhaps cats? Venti always liked cats, his island deserved some cats. He decided to go with cats for now in lieu of other good options.

1/2
>>
>>96472199
The bard drifts absent mindedly to one of the houses on the inner side of the highway and steps through the front door. A good enough place as any for a cat house.

A few hours later. Venti smiles down at the pack of cats and one particularly house cat looking lion he was petting.
"Aww you're a good kitty." The cultivator grins rubbing the large cat's head. The beast purring contently
"You take care of your siblings okay?"
He sighs. Amused even if he was functionally talking to himself.
He adjusts his cloak, stepping out of the house. Well, that was most of the night spent on admittedly fairly minor things. but he'd made most of the core stuff already over the last few months.

It was going to need a lot more work. But he was happy with this place.
It sort of reminded him of home. From what he remembered of it at this point at least. He pauses and looks down. - Oh! that spot on a intersection looked a bit like how he remembered the street, a Mcdonalds in his hometown growing up. That could be a good next project.

The cultivator floats down to begin. Already beginning to plot out the shape for the building, But a familiar voice cuts through all of reality,as it begins to dissolve into something entirely different.
"Wake up! I made breakfast!"
He blinks, blearily orienting himself as he looks around the airy, wooden floored and walled room bedroom, light streaming through the window. to see his sister in the doorway. She had indeed made breakfast. Well dreamscape creating would have to wait until another night to continue.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?

I had an interesting situation arise in a recent game. It was an anachronistic humans+dinos game with the PCs as super-powered cavemen. One PC had 4 levels of the Control (Bone) advantage. They fought a zombie giganotosaurus, and he wanted to use his bone control on an exposed bit of femur. I ruled it as a quick contest between his IQ and the dinos HT, with him inflicting margin of success injury to the leg. But that felt.... anticlimactic. I checked the books afterwards, and Powers has no guidance on using Control on living creatures. What do you anon's think is a good ruling that's fair, but still feels cool and cinematic?
>>
>>96472206
You'd reroll on anything less than a 7. But yup, you could roll low. Could also roll high.
>>
>>96472211
Control (and Create for that matter) are both pretty underwhelming as standalone abilities, as you've noted. However, they work excellently as bases for power stunts (or Wildcard Powers from Supers if you're using those). So many different abilities can be stunted off of Control. Innate Attack (Ignores DR; All or Nothing), Binding, TK (Animation), and a variety of Afflictions would all make sense stemming from Control (Bone) via the rules for Using Abilities at Default (p. P173).
>>
>>96471902
I have no advice for you beyond "rolling for stats in gurps is stupid".
>>
>>96471902
Rolling for each stat sucks because totally randomized stats suck AND they make it impossible to include class templates when sticking to a static budget. You could just abandon everyone having the same points value in the beginning, but a viable compromise would be to roll on a table instead, with each entry giving a stats adjustment package with a uniform value to the others. That way you still get a (pseudo)random stat allotment but can proceed knowing exactly how many points the stats will come out to.

An example table might be something like this
>1 : ST+2; IQ-1; HT+2
>2 : DX+1; IQ+1; Will-1; Per-1; ST-1
>3 : Per +2; HT+1
>4 : IQ+2; ST-1; HT-1
>5 : DX+2; ST-2
>6 : ST+1; Will+2
In all cases, the stats adjustment come out to [20], meaning any 55-point occupational template can be combined with it to make a 75-point character.

But beyond random stat allotment, I don't know what really counts as "OSR elements" that would need special consideration in GURPS. GURPS combat is already plenty lethal, you've already selected low-ish point totals to pursue, and any system lets you play "mother may I" with the GM instead of using game rules if you so wish.

If lunars were present in all three different realms of Exalted that'd raise questions on why they didn't focus on saving creation. Also I thought sidereals had charms revealed to them at the right time to be made specifically to deal with ghosts. If lunars are somehow more knowledgeable or capable of dealing with underworld then do you want them to pretty much just take the spot of the Green Lady?

Myself, I'm brewing something where I want them used by pair, using Charisma+Intelligence for persuasion or using Constitution+Charisma to intimidate, so you aren't totally doomed if you didn't put points in one skill.

Does it cause damage? Fight.
Does it cause effects? Fuck around.

Let's break it down.
Cause or prevent damage? Fight.
Have a direct effect not related to damage (open a lock, put enemies to sleep, create an object, etc)? Fuck around.
An attempt to gather information (check for trap, search a room, interrogation)? Find out.

Hacking a computer? Fuck around. Search the hacked computer for data? Find out. Prevent ICE from blasting your brain? Fight.

I'm writing one right now that has only three attributes, but nine ability scores are derived from those by adding one attribute to half of another attribute.

The game uses a d6 dice pool with varying degrees of success, and the size of your pool is determined by the relevant ability score. Two dice at minimum, five dice max.
Target numbers are determined by either your own ability scores or your target's ability scores depending on the action being performed. You would roll against your own to perform a healing miracle but roll against your target's to bonk them with a warhammer, for example.
You want to roll as many successes (rolls of 4 or more) as possible. Falling short of the target by one still succeeds, but at a cost. Exceeding the target by one or two is a great success, and exceeding the target by three is a crit. Falling short of it by three is a fumble. Sixes explode, and ones defuse (any dice that would explode do not).

I initially conceived this to be used with a skill system, but I'm strongly considering abandoning it. I kind of wanted to ape the skill-based progression mechanics from Mouse Guard, but I'm not sure if it's actually going to add much to my game or not.

You would love the QUENDO system I made up in an afternoon for my little sister when I was a teenager, then.

The phyrexian creature type fucked up this game (more than it was already fucked up). Most of the spooderman in-universe could be phyrexians if not for the need of that type.

far less obtrusive than adding something like rainbow mana. colourless mana already existed in the game. all they really did was make a distinction between "generic costs" and "colourless mana". before, generic costs and colourless mana generation used the same symbols, but they changed it so that there was specific use cases for colourless mana while still keeping generic costs as a thing. the distinction was actually a great thing in my opinion. generic costs can be paid by any type of mana, colourless mana is just another specific type of mana like any of the colours.
