What systems/mechanics provide good rules for simulating progress of a war effort?
How would you portray moving frontlines and exchange of territories during a war? Both from perspective of commanders and boots on the ground.
Any games where you did something similar?
>>
>>96471343
What do you need it for?
>>
>>96471456
I'm preparing an interstellar war campaign where players are a merc band doing jobs for each faction involved in the conflict.
I could just wing it and move the lines on the map as it feels right, but I was wondering if somebody came up with rules for simulating this sort of thing.
>>
>>96471343
Draw your instellar map, place down a few factions, and play a game of Risk. However that goes tracks the story structure of the war for your game, and adjust as needed. It tracks troop movements and big victories/losses just fine, and that's about all you actually need to know. Where are troops, who owns what, when did surprising victories happen. What is where when. It's all done after the game of Risk. Write down all the moves. Now call each turn a month or year or whatever and voila: you've got a timeline of how a war progressed. Which is all you really needed anyhow, because it's mostly a question of "who and what is where when, fighting whom, when the players did thing."
>>
>>96471724
Doesn't have to be Risk, specifically. I'm just saying "play any war game" and write the moves down, to build your chronology of how the war progresses. Then allow players to get involved and turn the tides by stealing the deathstar plans for that fight that your timeline says the rebels are going to lose, or whatever.
>>
>>96471724
that's awesome and probably the fastest way to do it other than something completely arbitrary like flipping a coin for each front

FDM minis are fine for casual play.

Ask yourself this: Do you want to deal with resin printing? The health risks, the spills, and all those shenanigans? They can all be avoided, minimized, or handled. Just look at everyone doing resin printing here. You can do it. Do you want to?

If you do, get a resin printer. If you don't, get an fdm printer.

you seem to have misunderstood, not what that anon said -the basically duel masters way. force of will had a separate deck for lands and 'tap your not-commander in the command zone to put the top card of your land deck into play'. their not-commanders also would be put onto the battlefield for some cost and had some other abilities that they tapped for, like really specific hate.

>Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack roll if you have Advantage on the roll and the attack uses a Finesse or Ranged weapon. The extra damage's type is the same as the weapon's type. You don't need Advantage on the attack roll if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the target, the ally doesn’t have the Incapacitated condition, and you don’t have Disadvantage on the attack roll. The extra damage increases as you gain Rogue levels, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.
Nothing is really immune to sneak attacks anymore.
>>
>>96470962
>How does it work in 5th edition?
you trigger a sneak attack as long as you have advantage on a target
or, for melee attacks, if there is a friendly creature next to it when you attack
so no more "you cant backstab a slime because it has no back" moments
>>
>>96470966
>>96470967
Okay, so there's no sweeping rule like "gray oozes are immune to sneak attacks because they have no vital organs to stab" or anything along those lines, if I understand correctly? Thanks.
>>

Does it need to be digital? I was going to say a form-fillable PDF but that's not functionally different than a printed character sheet.

Fillable Sheets is my favorite, but if you need an online one you could try Shard Tabletop.

A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,

Possibly, their new models are way better than those at the start of MK4. They either changed artists or whoever was their art director started beating them harder so that they would keep to the overall game style properly.

>Maybe this is nothing new, but I don't remember ever seeing this ten years ago.
It's a very old thing that came back in fashion because it got cheap. Early on, you needed more money to print cards. But think Warhammer 40k 2e, Clan War, Deadlands, etc. There's always been a trickle of games with cards, Kickstarter and Chinese slave labor made it a flood.
>Pros
Cards always use a dependent probability (what comes next is influenced by what came last) and the designer can skew them as they see fit
Likewise, wargear cards automatically place a limit (in theory) on duplicate items. Can be a balance thing
Hidden information and resource storing. Kensei did this particularly well. Cards can also be used as objective markers, pre-assigned treasure stashes, and the like
They add feelies and another place for art or story elements in a game, and can increase a box's perceived value. Even if the game only uses a regular deck of playing cards, custom decks are a common impulse purchase (see: Blood and Plunder, Deadlands, et. al.)
Quick reference to rules without opening the book

>Cons
For scummy creators, they're a great gacha/chase element. It's one of the ways Xwing and Armada pumped sales numbers; put critical cards for one ship into another box, especially cards you "need" multiples of. And of course that ship works best with some stuff from box #3..
Cards physically degrade very quickly, especially if you need to shuffle them multiple times per game. They're relatively easy to lose and often difficult to replace
It's extremely hard to effectively errata a card without a new print run, and using errata with them interrupts gameplay constantly. You might as well just have a table at that point. This bit Xwing in the ass.
Cards inevitably slow down setup and teardown: they usually also drag down gameplay, especially if there are a lot of rules on each card. They add a lot of "churn", so people can feel like they're doing more even with a shallow set of rules

Your rules are not how the majority of English speakers play. I don't know anyone who has played like that. They're not even a match for the Middle Eastern or Eastern European table family games I know.

>If you move your piece into a triangle space containing 1 of your opponent's pieces that piece is sent to your finish line.
In English standard rules, we say "bar". Hit pieces get sent to the bar, not your opponent's finish line. In the old days they were just moved off the board.

>You cannot overshoot the finish line. If all of your pieces are too close to the finish line to move your turn ends early.
In English standard rules exact count is not required.
When bearing off, first, you must try to make an exact move with your roll which can be either bearing off or moving to a lower point as you please. E.g., you roll 5 with pieces on points 6 and 5, and with point 1 open, you must either move the 6 to 1 or bear off the 5, your choice.
Second, if you can't do that but your roll is higher than the highest point you have a piece on you have to bear it off. E.g., if your highest piece is on point 4 and you roll 5, you have to bear off that piece on point 4.
Third, if you can't make an exact move, and you pieces are all higher than your roll, you lose the roll and you turn ends as normal.

To educate me and everyone else, where exactly do your rules come from and what is the name of the game?
>>
>>96469457
>In English standard rules exact count is not required.
>where exactly do your rules come from and what is the name of the game?
The movement rules are how my brother taught me to play.

>In English standard rules, we say "bar".
I know the middle is called 'the bar' I was explaining it that way because the board really is a straight line.
>Hit pieces get sent to the bar, not your opponent's finish line.
Topologically those are the same thing. If you have a piece on the bar it's 25 moves away from your finish line. If your opponent has a piece on the bar it's 25 moves away from their finish line.
>>
>>96469508
If he's still alive, can you ask him where he learnt that?

>Topologically those are the same thing. If you have a piece on the bar it's 25 moves away from your finish line. If your opponent has a piece on the bar it's 25 moves away from their finish line.
There's no standardized term "finish line". Could also be understood as point 1. It's an overly confusing way of explaining it.

Yeah plus I'm into the earlier lore and that one is full of clan mechs. It's interesting how the game doesn't have a huge buy in, I have to check myself realising I could have a great game with just two boxes. But I definutely want some tanks. It just works way better with support in my mind

The lore is not tied specifically to one system or the other, the choice of system should be yours and only because you like it more to play. See if you can't find people at your LFGS to give you an introductory game of each and see how it goes. Also there's nothing stopping you from playing only tanks and infantry if you really want to but you'll be expected to learn Total Warfare thoroughly.

Buddy finished painting my original quadmech design.
He's really using his Lit paint a lot. The jets are painted with it and they just glow in any kind of light, it's really cool.

Dragons are one of the archetypal things you expect to see in fantasy, arguably even more than other mainstays of the genre like Elves, Dwarves, Gandalf-style wizards, etc. Be they monsters, incarnations of pure Good, Evil, or some other force or being, actual gods or other divine beings, shapeshifters who can take on human form as needed, or what, Dragons seem to capture our imaginations like no other, with cultures all over the world having legends of dragons and similar creatures. So, I figure it couldn’t hurt to talk about how you handle dragons on your own settings, and what your favorite depictions are. Art of dragons is fine too!

Oh yeah. She's taking part in the xorvintaal, so she's plotting something big regardless, probably taking control of the whole island-country, but we haven't confirmed that exactly.
Apparently, there was another dragon in the island that controlled the mountains (where we stole half her hoard), but it either fled or she killed it.
>>
>>96005629
Problem I've had with dragons is that the main thing you do with them is slay them. Seems kinda silly for them to be extremely rare, even the young ones, and for it to take centuries to get a big one when it only takes 1 strong party to kill one and that same party can just go around killing more and more dragons. Then there's the times dragon might get defeated by normal people like what happened to Smaug. There's just no sensible way for dragons in most settings to exist if you have thousands of years of history and adventuring.

It has never been relevant to a game but dragons are just very successful kobolds. Still rare, still powerful and sometimes smart but the pool they have the potential to grow from is large.
>>
>>96463236
the only problem is the lack of writer restraint
every setting has gobs of leveled adventurers/heroes with at least semi-optimized builds and party compositions, most of the time they have really high ability scores, and of course plot armor

I don't think you should be limited to E6, but I try to stay in that mindset.

There are bits of 40k lore I like and bits I don't. I don't see the point in getting worked up over people's takes OR lore changes given that like the rules and the models, the setting changes a lot.

Broadly speaking there has always been a disconnect with the setting and the way it is presented. While I play other stuff and like the old bright stuff of the 1990s it was a strange contrast with the lore.

Paradoxically the emphasis on fun made a lot of really disparate elements work.

There's nothing bad at speaking out against something you dislike. If you say it loud enough, there's a chance for it to change in the original.
It can be both good or bad, depending on what it was.

The zoyman's outrage is somewhat understandable, given it's ultrafaggot we're talking about. Everything edgy seems like flashing red lights when they do it.

I question the choice to pick up both Vicious and Bloody Debilitation but otherwise yeah that's bog-standard rogue. Bloody Debilitation's really good but I dunno if it's level-12-class-feat-good when you already have Vicious, which is kickass enough on its own. I guess it depends on what else you'd be looking to get instead.

Anyway, here is a fanmade supplement, it should have White Lions.

>The most common High Elf Knights are Silver Helms
So it doesn't only represent Silver Helms, they're just the most common. Plenty of actual shit to be mad about that exists out there, and you're here just making shit up.

If GURPS managed to make a career out of the Heron Guard (who are immortal dual-wielding samurai/cossacks), Warhammer can make a career out of the White Lions.

Clerics can no longer cast spells while using a shield apparently. This is from the new starter set. WotC REALLY wants to destroy that class fantasy for some reason.

>more of a board game than an RPG
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with adding board game elements to RPGs.

Yes, but it would be out of place in the equipment section of the character sheet. Or character cardboard, I guess.

Wouldn't be any more out of place than the current text.

Casting with 2-handed big bonk is a go?
