What is this question? Yes, there are dozens of wargames. Are they played in your area? Who knows, you gotta find out yourself. Ask at local game stores, check online for groups.

Oh autist-kun, your inability to read a simple question is adorable. I'm not asking if other wargames exist outside of GW's stuff, I'm asking what non-gw games capture the spirit of what the other anon was suggesting.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.

What makes you think target 20 "fucks up the math" but target 19 doesn't, exactly? Because it's bollocks: Neither one does.

Personally, I use target 21, but you can use target-whatever-the-fuck-you-want, even target 69. They're all equivalent systems.

>Delta even acknowledges this
What fucks up things in Delta's approach is that he uses the wrong attack bonuses, not target 20 in and of itself. Just use the right attack bonuses and you're good to go.

The right attack bonuses, by the way, are
>target −THAC0
So if you have THAC0 19 and you want to do target 69, your attack bonus is
>69 − 19 = +50
Everything else is unchanged, including AC.

Six mile hexes are great for abstract overland movement over several days. 100 yard hexes means each hex implies a single battlemat should you run that way. It's also unlikely that you will accurately model non-PC movement at that scale, whereas that's both easy and not really necessary with a larger grid.

But props to 100 yard hex guy; it probably works great for him. I'm just not gonna do that ever is all.
>>
>>96472723
>bollocks
Lol if you're talking about just converting THAC0 to an attack bonus then yes you're correct. I was explicitly talking about Delta's method, which he calls Target 20, which I thought was pretty clear considering I mention Delta by name.

>>96445517
I mean I'm pretty sure literally all of those references are to accurately tracking in-game time, not having it by some necessity of large amounts of players running at some MMO or MUD or whatever that is tied to real time.

I think that interpretation- and the wild amounts of extra interactions it promotes- are why the brOSR is interesting, and also why they act like weird bullies that make everyone else circle the wagons. It's a way to inject drama and add meaning.

Weren't people chimping out about fate points like last week? No disrespect to anyone, this is a great writeup and the game sounds very fun, but it's funny to me how fickle the poasters here are.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?

You'd reroll on anything less than a 7. But yup, you could roll low. Could also roll high.
>>
>>96472211
Control (and Create for that matter) are both pretty underwhelming as standalone abilities, as you've noted. However, they work excellently as bases for power stunts (or Wildcard Powers from Supers if you're using those). So many different abilities can be stunted off of Control. Innate Attack (Ignores DR; All or Nothing), Binding, TK (Animation), and a variety of Afflictions would all make sense stemming from Control (Bone) via the rules for Using Abilities at Default (p. P173).

I have no advice for you beyond "rolling for stats in gurps is stupid".
>>
>>96471902
Rolling for each stat sucks because totally randomized stats suck AND they make it impossible to include class templates when sticking to a static budget. You could just abandon everyone having the same points value in the beginning, but a viable compromise would be to roll on a table instead, with each entry giving a stats adjustment package with a uniform value to the others. That way you still get a (pseudo)random stat allotment but can proceed knowing exactly how many points the stats will come out to.

An example table might be something like this
>1 : ST+2; IQ-1; HT+2
>2 : DX+1; IQ+1; Will-1; Per-1; ST-1
>3 : Per +2; HT+1
>4 : IQ+2; ST-1; HT-1
>5 : DX+2; ST-2
>6 : ST+1; Will+2
In all cases, the stats adjustment come out to [20], meaning any 55-point occupational template can be combined with it to make a 75-point character.

But beyond random stat allotment, I don't know what really counts as "OSR elements" that would need special consideration in GURPS. GURPS combat is already plenty lethal, you've already selected low-ish point totals to pursue, and any system lets you play "mother may I" with the GM instead of using game rules if you so wish.
>>
>>96471902
I've done this before, with completely random everything, and everyone make 4 characters, then do a Dungeon Crawl Classics style lv0 character funnel. The goal is to just be able to make characters and run a game in one session last minute.
What I did for stats was roll 2d6/2 + 7, rounding up. This results in the majority of the stats being around 10 or 11, and has more of a trend for higher stats over lower.
Here are the rules I used, stolen from someone on youtube and slightly modified.

Good posts, lads.

What systems/mechanics provide good rules for simulating progress of a war effort?
How would you portray moving frontlines and exchange of territories during a war? Both from perspective of commanders and boots on the ground.
Any games where you did something similar?

Draw your instellar map, place down a few factions, and play a game of Risk. However that goes tracks the story structure of the war for your game, and adjust as needed. It tracks troop movements and big victories/losses just fine, and that's about all you actually need to know. Where are troops, who owns what, when did surprising victories happen. What is where when. It's all done after the game of Risk. Write down all the moves. Now call each turn a month or year or whatever and voila: you've got a timeline of how a war progressed. Which is all you really needed anyhow, because it's mostly a question of "who and what is where when, fighting whom, when the players did thing."
>>
>>96471724
Doesn't have to be Risk, specifically. I'm just saying "play any war game" and write the moves down, to build your chronology of how the war progresses. Then allow players to get involved and turn the tides by stealing the deathstar plans for that fight that your timeline says the rebels are going to lose, or whatever.
>>
>>96471724
that's awesome and probably the fastest way to do it other than something completely arbitrary like flipping a coin for each front
>>
>>96471343
"Stars without Number" has some grand strategy rules, which sounds like what you need, even present rules on how to incorporate your players into it
but I havent tried them out myself so they might be ass
>>
>>96471547
IMO this is really a matter of presentation. You produce a map. Preferably a cool looking one and update it with visible changes each session. Its basically a graphic design/UI design task.

It is a weak word.
"It's kind of a weak word, though," just to give an example of why.
It's a word people toss into a sentence for no other reason than to decrease the confidence of their statement to make it less confrontational. This does imply a certain amount of mealy-mouthed weakness.

nah, i disagree. soublight, gitmob, kruleboyz, ironjawz, seraphon, hedonites, khorne, StD have all been an improvment over their old fantasy counterparts. you could maybe argue about the stylistic divergence of kharadron, lumineth, DoK, sylvaneth, or IDK, but i think they're all pretty much better all around as well

Soulblight are pretty good too, but I disagree on Seraphon, Hedonites, Khorne, StD, Ironjawz, or Gitmob being departures from their old WHFB aesthetics. The only one on that list I would say was was the Kruleboyz and they were quite controversial on launch for that very reason.

Even if that'd be the case, LotR setting is much more limited and less visually inspiring when it comes to creating your dudes. Like, the movie has glorious aesthetics, but it allows much less creative freedom and flashy stuff. You can absolutely proxy/ convert/ kitbash primarch models with a lot of crazy stuff to make them fit to your crazy, customized dudes (say, deep sea chaos and evil tentacle-tailed monster as proxy for fulgrim, crab-legged Vashtorr, big angry bat angron, whatever)

Heroes also get more of a command aspect while being effectual on the table.

This is what i'm talking about it seems like lunars want to make sure people have to interact with them or can't be ignored. If lunars were present in all three different realms of Exalted that'd raise questions on why they didn't focus on saving creation. Also I thought sidereals had charms revealed to them at the right time to be made specifically to deal with ghosts. If lunars are somehow more knowledgeable or capable of dealing with underworld then do you want them to pretty much just take the spot of the Green Lady?

The bard drifts absent mindedly to one of the houses on the inner side of the highway and steps through the front door. A good enough place as any for a cat house.

A few hours later. Venti smiles down at the pack of cats and one particularly house cat looking lion he was petting.
"Aww you're a good kitty." The cultivator grins rubbing the large cat's head. The beast purring contently
"You take care of your siblings okay?"
He sighs. Amused even if he was functionally talking to himself.
He adjusts his cloak, stepping out of the house. Well, that was most of the night spent on admittedly fairly minor things. but he'd made most of the core stuff already over the last few months.

It was going to need a lot more work. But he was happy with this place.
It sort of reminded him of home. From what he remembered of it at this point at least. He pauses and looks down. - Oh! that spot on a intersection looked a bit like how he remembered the street, a Mcdonalds in his hometown growing up. That could be a good next project.

The cultivator floats down to begin. Already beginning to plot out the shape for the building, But a familiar voice cuts through all of reality,as it begins to dissolve into something entirely different.
"Wake up! I made breakfast!"
He blinks, blearily orienting himself as he looks around the airy, wooden floored and walled room bedroom, light streaming through the window. to see his sister in the doorway. She had indeed made breakfast. Well dreamscape creating would have to wait until another night to continue.

>Perhaps cats? Venti always liked cats, his island deserved some cats. He decided to go with cats for now in lieu of other good options.
You fool, they’ll push everything in your dreamscape off the edge!

>"Aww you're a good kitty." The cultivator grins rubbing the large cat's head. The beast purring contently

>Well, that was most of the night spent on admittedly fairly minor things. but he'd made most of the core stuff already over the last few months.
Also, developing minor things is fun.

>You fool, they’ll push everything in your dreamscape off the edge!
"Man I'm sure glad that edge at the end of the ocean just leads back to the sky."

>Also, developing minor things is fun.
Mmhm. I wanted to see how realistic or confusing a bit trying to play off the dream as reality for the scene but he doesn't have the development to do that yet.
The dreamscape can be a fun. Even if He'd never call it a toy. It's sort of the ultimate creative tool in a way.

>Or at least, the place where he came from.
Exactly. It's basically a amalgamation of his hometown and his new life in Hyrule. Though as time goes on hyrules obviously gonna dominate more and more elements of the dreamscape. I do have the mental image of one of his attacks in the late second stage and third just to be opening a portal and out comes barreling a tiger or semi truck though.

>Cooking gets much easier when you can use Ki for all the kitchen equipment.
Saves a lot of money on kitchen equipment to. Though given venti and midna live with her they probably have them anyway.

>Hylia: You still have something to learn, I see.

It scratches the same itch as city building games.

>Saves a lot of money on kitchen equipment to. Though given venti and midna live with her they probably have them anyway.
>Midna: Or you could form pots and plates out of magic, thus eliminating the need to wash the dishes.

>One of Hylias more genius ideas. The life quality of the toilet array cannot be understated.
>Hylia: I assure you, no one was less elated then I when I proved that array worked. Going from 21st century plumbing to the accommodations of a peasant village was an aspect of my summoning I very much loathed.

>Hmm I wonder if venti could cook up a spell to halt aging/The need to eat/Just fuel it through magic at this point.

The chances that you naturally just happened to be wanting a brettonian team and a khemri team together at the same time that GW announced a joint release of them is so vanishingly small as to be negligible.
So the reality is you only want one of them at best and any illusion to the contrary is your FOMO deluding you.
That being understood, if you really must have one of these GW teams then the best option (since you show a willingness to wait) is to wait for them to be sold individually or for someone to buy the box looking for the other team who then wants to sell off the team you are interested in.
>>
>>96472563
I understand your point, but here's how I came to it
>Want to get into BB
>Hmm Second Edition has everything, but I don't want either team
>Also figure new edition and set is coming out sooner rather than later
>I'll just play learn if I like the game on BB3, get Blitz Bowl to get friends involved and then buy Norse or regular Orks to play with friends at LGS
>Oh shid new edition with two badass looking teams, including Bretts who would be a contender for my starting team based on rule of cool
I still think I'm going to get Norse or Orks and see how I like tabletop. Haven't played Blitz Bowl yet with friends (I know it's really not the same game)
By the time I figure out if I want to invest and have friends who want to play, the new box should be out and hopefully available
I guess my question is about whether there is so much value in Second Edition that it's worth getting it and trying to sell the teams. I think my current course of action is good though
>>
>>96472621
I'd advice you to get team from non-GW source. If you want the GW norse or orc get them now, next month they're gonna increase the price, probably 5-10USD.

>Second Edition
"second season" is the GW branding, this is more like 13th edition?
And no, people are only playing 2020 (and will only play 2025) because it's the current gw product, and it will live only so long as that status is maintained.
the 6th community edition (Living Rule Book 6) is the latest edition of the game that survived on it's own merit of being a good game that people wanted to play.
It is also the last version of the game to be designed with the involvement of the man who invented the game, as well as the last vrsion of the game to be released as a complete game all at once AND is the last version of the game to be playtested with a goal of making th game balanced and fun to play.
You say you are getting your friends into the game, so you aren't relying on the existence of an already established group, which means you can buy whatever team miniatures you want and play with whatever rules you want, so the free and complete LRB6 is a valid option here, you can play that and still buy whatever minis GW makes as they come out.
>>
>>96472652
That's a good point
>>96472669
Sorry, I'm talking about the 2020 Second Season Edition box and the 2025 Third Season Edition box
I will most likely mainly play at my LGS. I'm not sure whether or not yet I can get my friends to come along

2/2

It can also search through entire folder trees, so if you have a folder called like "02_arms", and then download a compressed folder called "space soldier builder" which contains another folder called "02_arms", then as long as the contents of those two folders are the same it'll flag them as a duplicate for you to choose which to move/delete.

You can then give it rules for which ones to mark for moving or deletion, or manually mark them yourself. Oldest file in each duplicate group, newest file, folder paths starting with "C:", folder paths containing the word "X", largest file size, smallest file size, mark only one file in each duplicate group, mark all but one file in each group etc.

You can also tell it to ignore entire file types or filepaths which is handy if you want to make sure it doesn't check or touch a certain place or thing.

It takes quite a while for it to scan terabytes of files (like, hours), but of course you're not tied to the computer during that time - so yes, massive time saver.

At the risk of being a shill, the one I used is duplicatecleaner dot com. About $50 iirc. Hope it's helpful!
