Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>96080428Resources for Newfags: https://sites.google.com/view/wbgeneral/Worldbuilding links: https://pastebin.com/JNnj79S5 (embed)https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/Eo+fK41FKVR7xDpbNO0a0N4k0YYxrmyrhX3VxnM14Ew/Fantasy map generator: https://watabou.itch.io/medieval-fantasy-city-generatorDiscord: https://discord.gg/6ZjEc7dy4TThread questions:>Do you refer to "generic" materials like pic related, trope lists, etc, to derive inspiration, either by borrowing or intentionally eschewing them?
>>96489985Just regular old thermonuclear warheads. Big bursts of radiation are still deadly. You can shape your charges too if you want, so consider that to get that sweet sweet Casaba-Howitzer action (nuclear spears). You need more ingredients than that, but at least those are sometimes called H-bombs so you have that. Otherwise, use the hydrogen as reaction mass for kinetic weapons.

>>96483821Females have a minimum size they must be in order to successfully give birth or lay eggs (for egg-laying species this is particularly important, since the calcium for the eggshells comes from the female's bones. The larger the female, the larger the bone mass, and more calcium can be leached off without causing osteoporosis). So for males to be bigger you usually need a specific reason for it to be so. Usually it's either that the males compete for mates or have harems of females that they protect (or both at the same time), in which case being bigger provides an advantage. In most species the male is larger, it's for that reason. Though there's some exceptions. A bunch of snakes have males that are larger than females seemingly for no reason (likely just some random evolutionary quirk that has no reason to be selected against because it's not like it's negative affecting them), though usually in those cases the size difference is small.

Previous thread: >>96346915GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.If you're wondering where to start:- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?

>>96492379If they are just hallucinations induced by the equipment, then that's just a flaw in the device, same as how NODs can give temporary disadvantages like Tunnel Vision and No Depth Perception. You don't need to make it buildable with the advantage / disadvantage system because it's just gear.If they are real entities, then they have some kind of Invisibility (or maybe high levels of Chameleon or Obscure) which doesn't work against this extremely specific technology. A web search says that the red night-vision made heat visible, so it seems like some kind of Infravision. I guess the demons could just have Invisibility in the visible spectrum and not IR, although that raises the question of why they only appeared in this specific instance. Maybe they realised they were being observed and improved their invisibility spells or something?

Palladium Games and Rifts General! /PGaRG/The world is a broken, post-apocalyptic wasteland destroyed by the eruption of inter-dimensional portals, rifts in the fabric of space-time and ley lines which crisscross the world. Demon & alien invaders have poured out of the rifts to destroy human civilization and claim the Earth. Now the wasteland has had 300 years to partially recover, and civilization has returned to the world; but not just human civilization: alien empires, monster kingdoms, lost time travellers, lands of mutants, demonic overlords and wizards have arisen from the ashes, all trying to rebuild the world in their own image!RIFTS! The science fantasy world of post-apoc cyborgs, wizards, dragons, ninjas, giant mecha, super-nazis, robot ninjas, vampires, underwater kingdoms, remnant human supertech civilizations and everything you can imagine all rolled into one setting where interdimensional RIFTS have pierced Earth's fabric and turned it into a playground for aliens and monsters!Plus other Palladium Games about superheroes, zombies, classic fantasy, supernaturals investigation and more. How is any kid playing 40k with their pocket money?
>>96489197Not surprised, it is too expensive for kids now, and the more detailed models are definitely made for experienced painters not dumb kids.I tried to set up a Warhammer school club in 2014 and it was a non starter because of the expense vs the area it was in, and the cost has only gotten worse.I came back to 40k after a 10 year absence and I'm finding the cost more than expected, and painting them takes longer and is kind of stressful.

>>96445137I like them in theory. The idea of this technocratic society ran an anicent AI that's starting to breakdown is really cool and fits into 40k well enough. Problem is they just look like little space marines right now. I think the best way to solve that would be to field more men of iron. Gives them a bit more of an identity and also more creativity for what you could do with the robots. Also since they're all weird clones of each other and their master is starting to fail they should look more deformed and weird, like the cloning system is making them imperfect

>>96492570All woke goes broke eventually. Give it time.

>>96492622You have no power here L Ruin! Begone Club-Shirt-Wearing-Tournament-Player! Back I say!Like I said, both games are fine if you tune down the competitive side and just goofy off. I used to play Warmachine / Warmahordes in MK2 and MK3 and the game wasn't fun after a point due to how cutthroat it was. The terrain there was even worse! My group all has wives, I dont have kids yet so I'll host and have some friends over to game on my tables and shoot the shit. It's a lot of fun. I'm also becoming far more anti social since I'm not going to the FLGS or showing up at events. Conventions are still great, I highly recommend. Just don't go to Adepticon only for the tournaments. Remember the hobby is mostly sitting in a room painting.
>>96466285Warhammer continues to thrive and mutate. Some of them are bad, others are good. Sometimes you get Astartes, other times you get Femstodes. This is the sign of a healthy franchise, because people are trying things and invested in it.Magic is much worse. It’s cannibalizing other IPs to feed off their popularity. Lord of the Rings having Black Aragorn is masking the true sin which was having Lord of the Rings at all. Being the cloaca from which all franchises can enter is not admirable, it makes you sleazy. The last few attempts at an “original” setting have failed, that cowboy world was pathetic.

This particular scenario ended 300 - 220 in favor of the Defender. Defender Crippled Mercury and Destroyed Sentinel and Catapult. Attacker destroyed Scorpion and Quickdraw, and ended up with Wolverine and Thunderbolt in the objective area. The Wolverine and Thunderbolt had fairly little issue, as once they got past the assault 'mechs, they couldn't give much chase (which was intended scenario design).

The spicier the better. I'll start to get the ball rolling: MTG, DnD and Warhammer are actually good for the hobby. They get new people started in this hobby and they keep the trend chasers contained and away from the rest of the hobby.Appealing to the normie masses is a necessary evil in order to keep what you love afloat. >>96487396>a huge proportion of RPG players would be better off playing board games. They either don't want the freedom to interact with the game world however they want that a GM provides, or just want a loosely structured storytelling framework.God damn, this is so true. People will often balk and screech at you when you point this or something similar out, too, and accuse you of being a "storyshitter" or a theater kid or some other description that's meant to be insulting. I don't say any of this with ego, I truly don't have emotions about some anonymous person saying something like this to me on the internet. I wholeheartedly believe you are correct, and that they would be better of playing board games. Maybe something like Gloomhaven or HeroQuest. I don't even dislike those games, either, that's not a put-down, it's not me saying "heh, I'm the patrician RPG player, and you're the plebeian board gamer." I also like board games. I just know a lot of people approach RPGs like board games, and as a result, end up playing what turns out to be a pretty mediocre game for most involved.
>>96492794Classic RPGs have a skirmish game origin generally, so are pretty combat heavy to this day.
>>96492806The issue is not with combat, but an entire approach to how RPGs are played. Thinking and acting strictly within predefined rules, for example. It's why Dungeon Crawl Classics has the "Mighty Deed." It's bigger than the rule itself. Combined with the dice chain and the frequent encouragement for the GM to interpret things dynamically, it opens people up to an entirely different way of playing the game if all they've over known is grid-based tactics games with a layer of roleplaying over top of them.

>>96485012I agree. We have to keep in mind that everything about 40k, the lore, the rules, the culture, etc is designed only to promote the purchase and use of the current range of figures. As it's difficult to make rules that cover the current figure range, with it's nine foot tall space marines, dreadnoughts, winged demons and tyranids, vehicles and huge 'heros' balancing on tactical rock piles, GW just doesnt bother with decent rules for fighting inside buildings. This may be why most 40k players just don't bother either and mostly stick with the occasional solid terrain display pieces and L shaped cardboard.
>>96485173They would look ok with a bit of paint. Maybe glue them to lollypop sticks and add random bits of foliage and earth piled up against them (using wood filler), add random extra rows to each long one to break up the straight lines a bit?
