What do you guys think are the most useful skills for a player character to have? I'm largely talking about non-class based games here.

Obviously it somewhat depends on the premise of the game, but for the most part there's quite a few that are going to be pretty much universally indespensible across every premise and even every historical era.

>Movement
>Stealth
>Perception
These three are probably the trifecta of the most important things a player character being might be capable of, at least from my experience with the medium. It pretty much single handedly allows them to dictate the terms of engagement and cheese their way through the most difficult scenarios.

But then again if you really think about it, it's not like humanity in real life is the fastest, sneakiest, or the most perceptive, and yet they're still the most powerful species on the planet. So what exactly is it that brought them to this point, and is it even relevant in the context of a TTRPG?

A player in my WFRP 4e game once """burglarized""" a nobleman's house by getting caught sneaking around, running deeper INTO the mansion, and being so much faster than the guards that they couldn't catch him before he rifled through the nobleman's desk, took all of his letters, and ran off.

Whats with the autistic rage against fun meme builds?
>>
>>96465692
Depends on the edition and your table entirely, I imagine powergamers online just hate the idea of not being optimal but you really can fuck yourself hard depending on the scenario (just look at the innocent merman questioning how to get around on land last thread)

>>96465713
The appeal of ttrpgs for me is making a dumb character concept, but playing them straight in universe. Like a wizard who only knows chain lightning and uses it for every solution, or a barbarian master combat carpenter who specialized in making boats for some reason.

>>96465770
Your examples are more extreme than what most people would consider fun meme builds and go into actively trolling everyone else at the table territory.

Do premade character sheets for a5 binder exist?

I don't play 40k and I don't have any of the books, but I have ONCE AGAIN heard some people talking about how powerful the space marines are, compared to normal people, and I had a sudden thought I need rules knowledge to disambiguate.

If a unit with 1 surviving standard guardsman charges a unit with 1 surviving standard marine what are the dice rolls that determine the results of that one charge? Assuming the luckiest rolls possible, is it possible for that guardsman to kill that marine?

If it isn't possible to do the 1-turn kill, what are the rolls the marine will make in retaliation, and what are the odds that the guardsman survives those to get another try against the marine?

(I'm not sure if "standard marine" and "standard guardsman" make sense - if you're playing a specific codex, will there be rules that make *every* marine non-standard, or is there a type of marine that every chapter gets? And same for the guardsman. If there's no "standard," then I guess I'm thinking of a Cadian charging an Ultramarine, just for being the two poster-boy codexes)

An elite guardsman (Lucifer Black) with a power sword scored a scratch on Alpharius in Legion during a 1v1. Died shortly afterward, but it proves the principle that a normal human, properly trained and equipped, can certainly go toe to toe with Astartes if they can even wound a Primarch.
Commissar Cain has won sword duels with Chaos marines. Catachans have slaughtered Khorne berserkers in close combat ambushes. Ogryns have pulled the arms off of terminators and beaten them to death with their own limbs.

I feel like making something, ideally something OSR-adjacent. This is kind of an open-ended question: what RPG supplement or other cool thing does /tg/ want to see? Think something you'd pay between $3 and $5 for.

I've got some game design and writing experience. I can handle graphic design and illustration (and sound too, if relevant). I just want some input on what you think might be cool. Trying to decide what to put a little time into.
11 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>96464475
I have lots of ideas. Mostly I wanted to see what /tg/ might think was cool. It's less about having ideas at all and more about trying to see what other people might be interested in. I figured about 3/4 of it would be insults and jokes, which seems about right, but sometimes people give interesting feedback.
>>96464598
Coming up with "an idea" is the easiest part of the process. I literally have hundreds of ideas, I'm not trying to source "ideas" as much as figure out what other people think might work. That other anon who recommended somehting from Sumerian or Aztec culture, for example.
>>96464610
Why is OSR the sewer? I guess I'm not tied to that idea specifically, my thought was that it would be good to make supplementary material because OSR stuff tends to be more system-agnostic, and I thought that might get a better response.
>>
>>96463772
Sell for $3 EACH completely un-playtested OSR variant classes
>>
>>96464610
The way normal people use the term "OSR" and the way /osrg/ uses it is not the same.

/osrg/ says that AD&D 2e is not OSR, for example, whereas the current hottest two games in DTRPG's "OSR" category are Ashes Without Number (Fallout version of the other *WN games, which are a bespoke d20 variation) and Mythic Bastionland (a derivate of Into the Odd); itch.io's top two are some Portuguese-language game called Mestres do Escuro (which, not speaking Portuguese, I don't understand, but doesn't appear to be a OD&D/B/X/AD&D 1e derivative), followed by a bunch of spells for a not-released system where the spell design uses "elements borrowed from both Cairn [and Draw Steel]".

>>96463898
A dungeon or other adventure that is well-designed and playable out of the box (or a series thereof, like a bunch of 5-10 room dungeons). One thing I've toyed with as a design principle is having two versions: one the sort of long, rich, deep text that's completely unusable at the table, and a second the "machine code" version that's usable as a quick reference at the table. OSR supplements have really hammered out how to do the latter as the only thing, but people do pay good money for the former as bathroom reading/fantasizing. There's some old Paizo quote about the majority of people who buy their adventure paths never playing them and just reading, and it's clear from the way (say) Curse of Strahd is laid out that Wizards is laboring under the same idea.

>>96466050
Based.
>>
I like floating islands and also subterranean worlds. And Pirates. Robots are good too.
>>
>>96465197
OSR isn't a sewer, the /osrg/ is.

GURPS is a modular, adaptable system, capable of running a wide range of characters, settings, and play styles, with a level of detail varying from lightweight to completely autistic.
Optional rules allow you to emulate different genres with a single system, or even switch genres within a single game.

A nearly complete archive of GURPS books can be found by using the image (follow the URL to get to a folder with some files, read the files to get to the archive). Never post direct links to the archive anywhere in plain text.

If you're wondering where to start:
- The Basic Set covers everything, including a lot of optional rules you probably won't use.
- A genre guide can be found in the archive, under Unofficial/GURPSgen. It tells you what extra books and articles you may find useful for many common genres.
- How To Be a GURPS GM is a good read even for players.
- GCS (gurpscharactersheet.com) is an excellent character-builder software, with page references to all the books and the option to export to both Foundry and Fantasy Grounds.

Thread question: What is your opinion on the art in GURPS books?

Fuck off, preferably kill yourself too but I'll take just not having to see your shit-tier opinions ever again.
>>
>>96462767
I find the art in gurps books to be pretty vestigal, with a few exceptions. At its most useful it can show an idea which is hard to convey with words, like the old lying down, crouching, kneeling, standing diagram. In most cases the art in gurps books is just weird looking and doesn’t illustrate anything useful.

I’d like to see more art for GURPS setting books, though. Including a picture for transhuman space robots or specific sci fi guns would be useful compared to the usual fare of a page describing psychic powers next to a picture of a guy with his eyes closed and fingers on his temples.
>>
>>96464905
Maybe it's because I've been a GURPS enjoyer since age 12, but I never thought the art looked that weird. Some of it sure, but not most of it.

Shadowrun's combat always has me going back the game despite the rules bloat each edition suffers. I think for a cyberpunk-genre system it beats Cyberpunk because Initiative Passes makes a character that it faster actually faster.

Cyberpunk RED is more accessible though due to simpler dice mechanics. Yet, really if you wanted to play David Martinez from the Edgerunners anime Shadowrun is better at simulating his Sandevistan(Wired Reflexs in SR)

I should also note that GURPS time to kill is pretty low, and large combats will generally make use of Mook rules, meaning that a lot of those combatants will resolve their turns very quickly and be taken out of the fight after one good hit.
