I don't play 40k and I don't have any of the books, but I have ONCE AGAIN heard some people talking about how powerful the space marines are, compared to normal people, and I had a sudden thought I need rules knowledge to disambiguate.

If a unit with 1 surviving standard guardsman charges a unit with 1 surviving standard marine what are the dice rolls that determine the results of that one charge? Assuming the luckiest rolls possible, is it possible for that guardsman to kill that marine?

If it isn't possible to do the 1-turn kill, what are the rolls the marine will make in retaliation, and what are the odds that the guardsman survives those to get another try against the marine?

(I'm not sure if "standard marine" and "standard guardsman" make sense - if you're playing a specific codex, will there be rules that make *every* marine non-standard, or is there a type of marine that every chapter gets? And same for the guardsman. If there's no "standard," then I guess I'm thinking of a Cadian charging an Ultramarine, just for being the two poster-boy codexes)

I consider ALL space marines and psykers Xenos and posit that they MUST FUCKING GO.

Total altered human genocide NOW!!!!

>regular guardsman put against a person literally designed for close combat
Lol. Yeah, they can roll the marine over on the tabletop.
In the fluff, regular guardsman with regular guardsman equipment has zero chance without equivalent plot armor.
>>
>>96462851
>I don't have any of the books
then why the fuck are you here idiot? What does it matter to you?
>>
>>96466621
An elite guardsman (Lucifer Black) with a power sword scored a scratch on Alpharius in Legion during a 1v1. Died shortly afterward, but it proves the principle that a normal human, properly trained and equipped, can certainly go toe to toe with Astartes if they can even wound a Primarch.
Commissar Cain has won sword duels with Chaos marines. Catachans have slaughtered Khorne berserkers in close combat ambushes. Ogryns have pulled the arms off of terminators and beaten them to death with their own limbs.
>>
>>96466680
That's not a regular guardsman, which don't have power swords.
Though it's 100% bullshit against a Primarch 1v1, no discuss.

Regular humans do have a better chance against space marines even in duels, where they can primarily outwit them or take advantage of their insanity.
Or catch them in ambushes. That's plausible, but never guaranteed.

Ogryns tearing off terminator limbs is also bullshit though, termie suit is just too hard. Realistic option would be to tear their weapons out of their hands, like a thunder hammer, and/or use appropriately heavy thing to bash on their head, which with Ogryn strengh would be sufficient.

Anon, NTA, but what are some good sources for Epic STLs/minis? I'm particularly interested in Tyranids, Iron Warriors, or Ordo Xenos. Is there a sculptor like Forest Dragon for Warmaster that has a large offering in a similar style like that?
>>
How are the Nu Chorfs? I used to love them, solid line, disposable fouler hobgobs, put every single egg in the Bull Centaur basket. Are the new sorcerer guys good or just worse lineman? I fucking hate the new aesthetic they have though, glad I have a 3d printed old school team

Epic is easily found everywhere, even on thingiverse you can find some very good epic minis.

This the "simplification" of Star Player access has been the absolute worst idea they had in 2020 edition and it needs to go back to carefully curated lists of who will play for what. So what if that requires a lot of reading, casual players don't fucking use Star Players anyway.
Hakflem needs to go back to being Skaven and Underworld only. Cindy Piewhistle needs to be Halfling only. Gnomes should NOT be able to hire Halfling Star players full stop.
It needs to be fixing, and the longer it's left like this the harder the job is going to be to do.
Like, I would sooner they keep Wildly Innaccurate. Keep the defacto removal of Stat Increases from the game. Keep everyone's Passing stat being 1 less across the board in almost all cases than the previous edition.
If they fix any one thing, NOTHING would be better that going back to the properly curated Star Player access lists.
>>
>>96465729

The new guys are fairly pointless. It's amazing how dirty they did the Sneaky Stabbas though. Overpriced, with shitty skills, no Dirty Player and no basic access to Sneaky Git. A skill LITERALLY NAMED AFTER THEM.

Incredible.

But you can still build them the old way, and it'll still work. Sure you lost Tackle on your linedwarfs, but Ironhard skin basically means they're never going to get fouled, are largely immune to chainsaws, don't need to worry about Mighty Blow or some random stadium or weather roll or a wizard with a lightning bolt.
It probably won't FEEL like it comes up all that much, but it's probably going to effect the opponents planning more than you'll realise.

It's baffling that the Knightly Order AoI is so incredibly shitty when 6E explored exactly the same concept but actually made it fun.
> Orders have a range of positive traits such as being wealthy, blessed or brave
> They also have negative traits like being humble, foreign or undisciplined
> Mix and match to make your own Order

It would be so simple to produce an updated list of these and actually make an AoI that is both fun and tactical.
Also why is the KO the only AoI not to have any unique units or traits? You could just remove the 0-1 limit on Order upgrades in the GA list and the whole AoI becomes redundant.

If it weren't for the explicit mention of "beastwomen" in the Archaon book, I'd think it was the only way Beastmen came into being. But yes, they fuck elf women, they fuck human women, they probably would fuck dwarf women if they could get their shit-soaked ammonia-scented hands on them, and this results in half-beast monstrosity offspring.

What’s the draw (besides pic related) for putting vampires in your story, if you aren’t going to lean into their greedy monsters stealing the lives’ of other to continue their unlife angle? It seems wasteful to put something like Frankenstein’s monster in your game but elide man’s hubris playing God. If you want sexy fetish-havers or superheroes who sparkle in the sun, just do that and not water down monsters with added allegorical appeal.

>It seems mainly to me that the questions you proposed as more robust alternatives are looking for something other than whatever this twinkie hypothetical is looking for
I mean yeah, the twinkie hypothetical isn't even related to playing games and has never been asked for a game.
Meanwhile the three questions offered actually ask the players of expectations and boundaries they wouldn't want the GM to cross.
>>
>>96466200
I sometimes ask potential interested players a hypothetical question of what their character would do in a particular situation. Usually after we've already long discussed essentials at the table, like boundaries, rules, scheduling, etc. Like if their character see a robbery in progress, or comes across a beggar, or sees someone drop their wallet, small stuff like that. It's a pretty good icebreaker, and actually does help for me. Some of them know exactly how they want to answer and it means I can focus on making sure the rules are upheld. Some are completely new and they get stuck on whether or not they're "answering right", it tells me they may need a bit more prompting than the other players at the table.

Like, by your own admission, you've never had to vet players before, so don't knock it till you've tried it.
>>
>>96466341
>I sometimes ask potential interested players a hypothetical question of what their character would do in a particular situation. Usually after we've already long discussed essentials at the table, like boundaries, rules, scheduling, etc.
This seems pretty useless for trying to weed out people who spaz out then, because all of those normal questions would weed out said behavior while being far more effective at establishing the type of game you're going to run and players you want.
>>
>>96466465
It's been the opposite in my experience, actually. I've dealt with plenty of guys who happily bother by the book and the rules, especially if they get to minmax and curbstomp shit, But when it comes to making choices not contingent upon the roll of the dice, they start worrying about picking the "wrong choice" or the possibility of messing up and get so anal about it. They'll deliberately shoot at monsters that are already engaged in melee with their friends, then deflect any bad feelings directed at them with "it's your fault for getting in my way". They'll treat npcs like crap, then get angry at me for said npcs being cold to them for "being antagonistic".

Found out that same type of person doesn't take to scenarios where there's no explicit right or wrong answer, even when I tell them it's just an icebreaker and that I'm not going to punish them in the game for it. If I tell them their character comes across a beggar asking for a spare copper and ask what they do, some get pissed and say I should letting them roll for perception to make sure they know if the beggar is on the up and up. Doesn't occur to them to just outright ASK if they could do a roll, since I've played with some guys who are more comfortable leaning on their character strengths mechanically rather than play it out theater style and accommodated them with it. Just immediate anger about their lack of "player agency". Same for if they see someone drop their wallet, they'd grab the contents then immediately backtrack it while demanding to roll to determine if it's a "trap", like if the cops will swarm them for it. Specifically to avoid the "wrong" choice.

I don't have as much patience for that kind of player nowadays, so I just recommend they go to a different table if they get that neurotic about it and insist by the book because they implicitly don't trust me as a DM. Trying to do things optimally or bothering by the book is fine, it's just not how I enjoy running games nowadays.
>>
I've dealt with many players across many games, and none of the ones who could handle a 1 on 1 talk about gaming were the type to then get filtered by a very simple hypothetical.
All the twinkie question serves to do is to make the GM seem kinda weird.

As an ex-competitive Modern fag until MH2, its because they spend 0 time fixing their competitive formats, hell its happening right now in standard

Modern keeps getting some fucking retarded Universes beyond or pushed card that just stays center stage in the format for over a year before correction. I get wanting people to use new cards and such, but it's so ridiculously strong or forced that it warps the entire meta game around the one ring or some other BS that its unfun.

In standard, there's Vivi thats turned the format into Izzet or rogue decks only. And because they don't want to ban more cards again after JUST banning 7 IN A ROTATING FORMAT, its going to stick for another 3+ months.

People just quit and play other card games because before when Wizards got careless, they had no choice but to wait. But now there's great card games you can play as an alternative, and you just don't go back because being excited for a new set every 3 weeks just isn't possible if you have a life.

>Who wants to be limited to three factions in a sci-fi setting? Who wants to engage with this paper thin Blizzard lore?
Trench Crusade faggots.

There are more than 3 factions in that

Admission of not having read the rules and cries of "everything I don’t like is LE SLOP" aside, didn’t they say that they plan to make several factions for the three races? Could be interesting, I dunno

I played a lot of StarCraft and I have no misgivings about it, but the style looks like slop. Bad proportions, too nu-Blizzard. StarCraft 2’s aesthetic did itself scuff the clarity of the artistic vision of the first by making everything so smooth. The models they’ve shown renders for look like random crap you’d find online from an independent creator. That’s not ‘everything I don’t like is slop’. Plenty of things I don’t like don’t look like slop. I hate primaris but they looks good.

Have they even revealed any models? This shit was announced like a year ago, thought it was vaporware.

What do you guys think are the most useful skills for a player character to have? I'm largely talking about non-class based games here.

Obviously it somewhat depends on the premise of the game, but for the most part there's quite a few that are going to be pretty much universally indespensible across every premise and even every historical era.

>Movement
>Stealth
>Perception
These three are probably the trifecta of the most important things a player character being might be capable of, at least from my experience with the medium. It pretty much single handedly allows them to dictate the terms of engagement and cheese their way through the most difficult scenarios.

But then again if you really think about it, it's not like humanity in real life is the fastest, sneakiest, or the most perceptive, and yet they're still the most powerful species on the planet. So what exactly is it that brought them to this point, and is it even relevant in the context of a TTRPG?

Average DC for what?

A player in my WFRP 4e game once """burglarized""" a nobleman's house by getting caught sneaking around, running deeper INTO the mansion, and being so much faster than the guards that they couldn't catch him before he rifled through the nobleman's desk, took all of his letters, and ran off.

>We haven't even gotten to things useful for surviving combat yet, and we're already way past what most games even give you to invest in a character.
yeah it's rough out there

It's why it's so important to suss out their relative importance and priority.

>Outdoor survival (even in urban or scifi campaigns)
>Crafting
>Medicine
Nothing beats this.

Whats with the autistic rage against fun meme builds?
>>
>>96465692
Depends on the edition and your table entirely, I imagine powergamers online just hate the idea of not being optimal but you really can fuck yourself hard depending on the scenario (just look at the innocent merman questioning how to get around on land last thread)

The appeal of ttrpgs for me is making a dumb character concept, but playing them straight in universe. Like a wizard who only knows chain lightning and uses it for every solution, or a barbarian master combat carpenter who specialized in making boats for some reason.
>>
>>96465770
Your examples are more extreme than what most people would consider fun meme builds and go into actively trolling everyone else at the table territory.

Do premade character sheets for a5 binder exist?
