Writing General: 'summer days' edition

Welcome to /wg/, the thread for all /tg/ related writing. Whether you're plotting your campaign, trying to come up with a character backstory, or just trying to write some setting fluff, this is the place to post it. You don't even have a campaign, just an idea you want to develop? You're welcome here. While the rest of /tg/ is arguing over monstergirl mating and which way rivers are supposed to flow, we're here to help you turn your thoughts into an actual finished product.

As the successor to the Storythreads, we're also open to /tg/ related fanfiction (D&D, Warhammer, Battletech, whatever). In fact, if you've written any vaguely /tg/-related short stories, you can try them out here. We also have flash-fiction challenges from time to time.

There's a discord for writers here
https://discord.gg/6AwKHGF

The previous thread can still be found in the archive here
>>95441002

And finally an archive of /tg/ fiction can be found here:
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Storythread (dead link, but may be resurrected one day)

Played some 2.5 with the below homebrew. Had a blast, ended in a 12-12 draw. Mechanicum vs Blackshield pirates. The group is thinking about adopting the Brutal adjustment that an anon brought up here where it counts after saves as a damage roll but doesn't roll over. But we're gonna have to test it out. Juiced up Mining Militia vs Solar Auxilia next week and then Orks vs Blackshields.

Recently I got Brindlewood Bay, and after the initial shock, kinda seems like it wouldn't be hard to run Mork Borg this way.

Combat is already player-facing, with the GM only rolling for damage. Since you're just exchanging numbers in a somewhat abstract way, you could add as much narrative chrome as you want. The biggest switch would happen on the GM's side and shouldn't even be noticeable to the players - introducing complications on partial successes and failures from a codified list, instead of just making them up on the spot. I mean, people were already doing that, just not always consciously.

Heck, you could even make it more FUDGE-like. You could give bonuses to rolls if a player describes their use of the environment well, or let them spend Omens to "Munchausen" things into existence that they don't have in their inventory or that aren't present in the scene. Ask players to chime in when describing new locations or to share what they fear will happen on a failed roll, incorporating their input at your discretion.

The only unsolvable difference seems to be scale. Mork Borg's actions are granular and specific, while PbtA's mechanics can zoom in or out to fit any scope.
>>
>>96588567
Nice. I don't even remember where I got it from. I have a likely implanted memory of there being a gif if it dinging the bell.

>>96589296
>The only unsolvable difference seems to be scale. Mork Borg's actions are granular and specific, while PbtA's mechanics can zoom in or out to fit any scope.
That's always at the MC's discretion so shouldn't be an issue. There's portable moves about returning to town or hexcrawling in a few of them, Perilous Wilds is a bit I've been considering how to use to run UVG with 1st ed apocalypse world or DW and a few of the more eccentric playbooks.
>>
>>96589296
>The only unsolvable difference seems to be scale. Mork Borg's actions are granular and specific, while PbtA's mechanics can zoom in or out to fit any scope.
That's the big difference for me
Playing a PbtA at the granularity of a trad game is incredibly boring, it's not engaging, but it's not supposed to be played that way. Most rolls define whole scenes and it's supposed to go beyond player input into player creation.

The other aspects are fine, I use them in NSR games, it's more of a style thing than mechanical. I recall some 5e dude like Colville recommending you do that, at this point it's part of modern play.

Depends on the period you choose. The original setting was set 1105 years after the founding of the 3rd Imperium - mankind has spread across the stars, life is good for most and apart from the occasional frontier war, pirate action or trade war the Imperium looks to last another 1000.

Before the 3rd Imperium was the Long Night, basically a centuries long dark age after the collaspe of the 2nd Imperium - Lots of worlds collapsed, lots of plague, famine, death, misery, technological decline, space vikings, etc.

Before the Long Night you had the Interstellar wars in which us Terrans fought and conqoured the Vilani of the 1st Imperium - just centuries of warfare (in which Earth won), quickly followed by the short lived Terran/Vilani 2nd Imperium and the economic collapse into the Long Night.

Later versions of Traveller tended to carry on from the 3rd Imperium Era, but destroying the 3rd Imperium setting (to sell books I guess), Megatraveller introduced an Imperium wide Civil War, TNE introduced an Imperium wide AI virus and second Long Night, with some later versions introducing a brain frying 'Empress Wave' eminating from the galactic core. Latest version of Mongoose has gone back to the golden era 3rd Imperium.

You have lots to choose from (or can even make up your own) and Traveller can be as Noble or Grim as you want.
>>
>>96586144
I don't really feel like any of those are materially different in this regard, and vaguely constitute the same elements, especially at the personal level, but yes, just to be clear, my perspective is the base ~1105 one, and I do agree that Traveller *can* be as noble or grim as you want, which was partially my point, since all the pieces are there - they're just not (normally) core to the central premise.

>>96586020
I don't think I'd categorize something as vague as taking back the stars as a focused campaign frame for what's primarily just an adventuring party. You could make it something like a colonial campaign, though, but unless you start to really abstract things yourself, it's unlikely that you'll start managing multiple colonies and the like.

I mean it's possible to run in the system, obviously, but at some point I feel like you're not really playing the game anymore, as much as you'd be running a management simulator in the setting. Which would be cool, but not what I think the game is really made to do.
>>
>>96586528
>I don't really feel like any of those are materially different in this regard, and vaguely constitute the same elements, especially at the personal level
tbf fair because most of those do feel rather fixed, but, Hard Times is supposed to feature the collapse actually happening around the PCs, between the civil war and virus. I would put Hard Times as grim and dark for sure, since warlords are consolidating power everywhere, raiding neighbours for stuff they're running out of, and the GM is meant to roll up world UWPs degrading and getting worse when the PCs come back to a world they've already visited.

I like how you thought about the problem of "no-man's land" and realize that the game can become stalematey. But I think you might have your Offense and Defense unit roles mixed up, Offense should have a lot of health and Defense should have a lot of damage. It sounds odd but let me explain.

In a game like this, defenders are at an advantage since attackers will always get hit before they can deal their damage. For example, say we have 3 squares in a line (1, 2, 3), you have Infantry on square 1 and I have Infantry on square 3. Whoever enters that empty square first will immediately be destroyed. Now, if you want to make an "attacker" unit that can break through this no-man's land and destroy the enemy, what would be better, to increase its Damage or its Health? Despite it being an "attacker" the answer is actually Health.
If your Infantry has 2 Damage and 1 Health, the situation does not change. You move up, I hit it, you die. Even if you had 99 Damage it wouldn't change a bit. But even adding just 1 extra Health makes it able to survive and reach my unit on the following turn, destroying it. And, provided there are no other Infantry nearby, I can continue to move around wreaking havoc on your next turn.

Defense is the opposite. If I want to kill a guy in an adjacent square before it reaches me, more Health does not help me in the slightest. As long as I have Damage greater than or equal to your Health, I'm completely safe even with just 1 Health. However, as soon as something with more Health shows up I'm fucked. That's why Damage is a more important stat for defense.

So basically, you have your roles flipped. Tanks are better for punching through enemy lines since they can survive hits. And Artillery is better for defense since they can one-shot everything in the game (not to mention the extra movement).

I'm also worried about Swarms being useless since you only control 1 unit per turn regardless of their strength.
>>
>>96580677
unironically garbage game, holy shit play more games you absolute nogamer. Learn some game design. Im usually not a hater but this sucks in so many ways as a concept alone.
Also the name Ceasefire is really cool, but if your just going to make a basic ass war game and not something political where you are trying to establish a ceasefire or something like that then the entire name is wasted

I'm nearly done. For /tg/ does get the shit done. I want to add one more monster as a tribute to this board.

Post ideas, monster art, sketches, slop, whatever.

>basic setting concept:
Reverse Underdark.
A setting about floating islands in the sky. A magic rock, Cloudstone, made by Giants of old makes the island fly. Gold is plenty and can be created at high enough altitude by several monsters.

Here is the single, solitary criteria that matters: Did the rule in question A; exist prior to 2006 and B; function with the 4th edition core rules? If yes, it should be in the project, and evidently everyone but you agrees so how about you toddle off and make your own "4th Edition SRD: Boring No Fun Allowed Poofters Edition" if you don't like it.

You're not misreading but you are wrong, it isn't mentioned anywhere for the entry for mega armour, equipment, or unit profiles that have mega armour, but they do count as 2, and the rule for it is the Transport rule only listed on vehicle profiles.

Ah shit, I knew I was getting something wrong. Well, 5-man Warboss squad it is.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but are you looking at the 4th edition codex from 2008, or the 3rd edition codex from 1999?

in the doc we've been using the codexes from the specific era of "3.5" which you can find here >>96541810, which cuts off before the 4th ed book as it was one of the last ones to come out. in the 3rd ed book they were called Wartrukks, and i have yet to find an instance in that book that says mega armor takes up 2 transport capacity. wartrukks also had a capacity of 10 models. i am confident that was later.

other anon seems to be referencing 4th ed, not the 3rd ed codex like we are using for this project. transport cap is 10 on wartrukks, and mega armor has no mention till later on of taking two spots.

Hello! I want to print a custom game mat for wargames. Does anyone have this picture or similar in a high resulition?

Judging from your filename, it came from some playmat company. Have you tried asking them about custom/modified orders?
>>
I just want to print it in paper. The picture is from a fabric mat.

>What is Shadow of the Demon Lord?:
Shadow of the Demon Lord is a horror-fantasy tabletop adventure game that presents a world standing on the brink of annihilation. In this game, you and your friends play characters charged with fighting back against the spreading evil, whether that involves tracking down potent relics, exploring ancient faerie ruins, journeying into Hell to bargain with the Devil, or battling demons and the cultists who summon them. The system is setting agnostic and has a wide variety of possible details for your own world.

>What is PunkApocalyptic: the RPG?:
Another game using the Demon Lord Engine. Text trimmed for text length constraints.

>What is Shadow of the Weird Wizard?:
It's a high fantasy game running on the Demon Lord Engine. It's similar to SotDL, but without the horror elements and the power levels are higher.

So is Mad Wizard much better than SDL? I ran SDL and it was awesome, I don't know if it's worth learning extra rules for a future campaign.

Absolutely not better. Not worse either. It's a sidegrade for if one likes the core system of SotDL, but with different minor game design priorities like less lethality.

Does anybody have latest simulacra compedium and can share?

The HP numbers kinda look like 5e HP bloat to me which turns me off from WW, I just homebrew port over path concepts that looked interesting from WW to SotDL.
